A near perfect game

The first Freespace is one of the best space-flight sims ever created, Freespace 2 is better. The awards are well deserved. The graphics are beyond top-notch and the gameplay is spectacular. BUY THIS GAME!

Freespace 2 is, hands down, the best space fighting sim I have ever played. The fact that it still has a vibrant community and a plethora of people making custom missions for it attests to its greatness. But even more so, the Source Code Project, undertaken by the community, has worked to bring the graphics of the game up to modern standards. Wow. Really, buy this game, it's worth it.

I just don't get it.

True, the graphics are incredible, and the story behind the game is quite interesting, but...the game itself is dull. Basically you fly around in a beautifully generated computer environment shooting at other ships. If the graphics and musical score were a tenth of what they are, the average user would see it as the low-brow arcade sim that it is. PS: I STILL have not found a game that even closely rivals Red Baron 3D. Now that's a game!

I had to review this given the completely hyperbolic reviews everyone else gave. The game simply isn't terrific. Its good, with top notch graphics and sound, and fun to play. The story line is not all that, and really doesn't involve one emotionally the way that Tachyon and X-wing Alliance do. My biggest beef is with the wingmen. They are total idiots; its impossible to keep any of them alive for more than ten seconds. Also, they are pitifully incapable of achieving any but the most rudimentary tasks. "Destroy that" is about as complex an order as they can handle. The game contains more complex commands that may be given, but its too hard to split your attention from combat, and punch in a sequence like C-2-2-1, especially if you have to give multiple orders, or change orders mid mission. Even if you do, they won't get it right. Rank advancement for your character depends on efficient leadership, which is impossible to give. Finally, some of the missions are downright hard, especially considering your incompetent squad mates. I got really annoyed when I had to play one mission eight or nine times, because success or failure hinged on random luck, and literally had nothing to do with flying ability. This game is good, but not as good as everyone is putting it out to be. PS- Why do all space sims make fighters fly as if they were inside an atmosphere?

I just got this game from a friend who just happened to not want it anymore and let me tell you,,,I am having fun. Pretty good story and acting is not bad, graphics are still on par. I remember the wing comander games and by far this blows those away. If you can't afford the 95.0 dollars, like who can?
Get it if you can this is a great game.

Though this game is coming up on 5 years old, it has aged very well. I have replayed the game more times than I ever had any other game. You will see why it is THE benchmark upon which all other space sim games are based. It's a travesty that it didn't get more credit and press. If you enjoy combat flight simulations and you haven't played this one, you're missing out. Play it; you won't be disappointed.

Now if only Volition would release a Freespace 3!

i probably own 2 or 3 computer games and couldn't care less about space wars or star trek or other stuff like that, but this is a really good game even if you're not into that stuff. Its simply fun to play

When you look at Freespace 2 and play, you think "Wow, incredible game!" All, in all, this is true. The missions, especially ones with enormous capital ship battles, deep in the nebula, with only enough Hit Points to survive one more shot from that fighter thats chasing you, you have a strong feeling in you. However, it is great fun. One thing the game lacks, is a slide control. ...If you had a slide control in Freespace 2, you could turn and engage pretty much anyone. Also the game takes an incredibly long time to load, which is ridiculous. Also, keep the difficulty setting on easy for a little while, or else you blown up before you even think about it. But, forgetting the flaws, which are so minor, you don't even notice them most of the time, Freespace 2 is definatly a game worth your time and money. Buy it now.

Freespace 2 is one of the greatest games i have freespace one
teamwork is one of the best stratigies best weapons are the
hornets:tip:while attacking never fire for the radar go for the
engine:tip 2:never fire apon capital ships with out destroying
all vasudan or shivan fighters.
