you talkin' to me?

This game is great. Both the missions and the things you do on your own (like extortion) make this game an awesome part of anyone's collection. I only found one thing wrong with the game. When you reach the rank of "Don", everyone still talks to you as i you were at the bottom of the barrel. For instance, when talking to one of the corleone men, they will still say something like, "hey kid stay outta trouble". This game, although great, can still use a little fine tuning.

Getting whacked in the opening movie is great...

Overall this is a pretty good game. If you like Grand Theft Auto and you like the mafia theme then you'll like this game.

You actually control a character in the opening movie of the game and this character gets whacked at the end of the opening sequence. So you get whacked before the game officially begins. Its great, heheh.

The game mechanics are similiar to Grand Theft Auto. There a few exceptions however. You cannot jump while on foot or jump out of moving cars. The skill advancement system is also different. GTA is based on practicing. If you drive a lot your drive skill increases. In Godfather you get skill points that are based on an experience point system which is called "respect" in the game. When you advance in levels you get skill 1 skill point that you can use to advance one of your skills.

There are several ways to earn money and respect. The first is by completing the main ojbective of the game, missions. Similar to GTA you take missions and complete them and that is how you advance the story line.

A second way to earn respect and money by taking over rackets and extorting legitmate businesses. You can also take over warehouses which are the suppliers of these rackets and businesses. You can also carry out hit contracts on the side.

Its a good game, but I suggest renting before buying.

Pros:

1. The hand to hand combat system is a little bit better than GTA.

2. The controls are easy to learn if you've played games like GTA.

3. The storyline/special scenes are great.

Cons:

1. Too easy: The game is not anywhere near as challenging as GTA.

2. The game world is much smaller than GTA.

Save the hype...

I was looking foward to this game being a fan of the movie and all, not to mention my appreciation for action / violent games ( GTA, MAFIA, THE GETAWAY etc. ) so i was open-minded going into this purchase. This would have been a fantastic rental, not much more. The storyline is pretty much similar to the movie, although there are a few differences ( how they write YOU into the ' Family ' etc. ). Here's where they lose a ton of points w/ me - the gameplay. It suffers. This is one of the most repetetive games i've ever played. Basically, you're doing the same thing over and over and over again... with a few different clips given to you as a reward as you make your way through the game. Some payoff. As if that's not bad enough... the oposing families hideouts / stores that you are supposed to take over are set up EXACTLY the same, always. Master one of these in the early stages of the game and you're set. As far as difficulty goes, this game could probably be successfully completed by a carrot. This game could have potential... but there are just too many flaws in this release to pass the test. If you're easily entertained you may find this a reasonable purchase ( i noticed how the price dropped in half since i purchased it... wonder why ) but if you're looking for something Mafia'ish and yet challenging check out MAFIA.

The Best game I have ever played.

I had been anticipating this game for approximately a year, bought it on the second day possible, and since then the game has blown me away!
It presents so many unique options never before explored in any other game, the only downside is trying to decide on which option is best for you. This game makes me think grand theft what? Anybody who believes is a knockoff of any other game has got it all wrong, this is what every other game strived to be but failed.

Finally! It Came Out. It's Worth the Wait Too

This game was shown in Official Playstation Magazine in May of 2005. Evidently it's been in the works for quite a while. They actually had Marlon Brando play the Godfather before he died On July 2nd 2004. All the other guys are here doing the voices. Including Robert Duvall, James Caan. But no Al Pacino as Micheal Corleone. Electronic Arts did a top notch performance with all departments. They have the greatest feel to the opened ended environments. Grand Theft Auto is still good. But you can do anything in this game. Plan a Bank Heist whenever you want. Just make sure you have dynamite. Your rival families will do anything just to ruin you. If you get their revenge level way up you start a mob war. You can win these mob wars by bribing an FBI agent or blowing up one of their shops. If you die, you loese. You can also extort businesses, buy out rackets and move up in the ranks of crime. The goal is to become the Don of NYC. Your missions range from whackings to cutting off the keeping watch while your partner cuts off the horses head. You also have contract hits to pull off, buy all twenty four safehouses, and collecting all one hundred film reels which seems like their answer to GTA's Hidden Packages.

The grapics are awesome in this game. They certainly beat out Mafia's. You create your own character in the beginning giving you a variety of suits and vests. You got to dress the part right to become the don. Gameplay is likewise. Awesome missions and it never gets redundant. Controls are beautifully done. The combat system is somewhat similar to Jet Li's Rise to Honor only improved. On the PS2 you press down L1 and pull the right analog stick and whack your enemy. Guns are easier than Rise to Honor. You press up on the D-Pad and R1 to shoot.

Awesome game, really. Top notch everything. Really Exciting. We have Dirty Harry, Scarface, and Reservoir Dogs. Now... I got to ask the question. Where is my Goodfellas and Casino video game?

If you don't like this game, you can sleep with the fishes.

This game is one of EA's best efforts outside of the sports genre in recent years. It feels a little like Grand Theft Auto but also has the easy to use format that is common to EA games. While it is violent, there are no rewards for killing pedestrians, and doing so creates a hassel for your character. In true mob form, you can bribe police officers, but killing them isn't usually the best alternative. The weapon system in this game is great. You can start out by buying or picking up basic weapons at the beginning and can purchase more efficient and accurate weapons later in the game. The old stand-by's of shotguns, tommyguns, pistols, dynamite, and even bombs are all available for purchase. If you are a into character development, this is the "sandbox" game for you. It allows you to gain experience (respect) that you can use to upgrade any of 10 different skills. If you are a fan of the classic movie, you probably won't be dissappointed either. While the game takes place parallel to the action of the film, it is fairly well done and even though Micheal looks nothing like Pachino, the other major characters all show up. James Cann plays Sonny with gusto and makes the cutscenes pretty entertaining. The customization is great too, for those tired of playing as one of the GTA characters that you are forced to be in those games. You can change appearence, clothing, and body type, among other things. The gameplay is solid, and the shooting system is far more rewarding than most third person shooters. The game took me 25 hours to beat on the medium difficulty and another 10 to get all of the unlockables. Trust me, this is a great game with pretty good replay value.

Thats exactly what Ea games did when the introduce The Godfather to the video game world. One of the 10 best games I have ever played. I could not put this game down it was so good. I remeber when I first saw The Godfather movie back when I was a teenager I did not like it. Because of this game I gave the movie a second chance. Boy was I wrong about the movie. The Godfather movie has become one of my favorite movies of all time now. Go out and buy the game and the movie. You will not be disappointed

Very good game!

All of you people are saying "Oh its too repetitive!" well its awesome because just go into places and start beating people! like a bar or or something for example i got Don of NYC, and that makes it fun because you have unlimited ammo. so just go around and shoot people. once i was on a corner street and i owned the bar. i took like 50 cars and trucks. i got cops to come and i killed them. and then i got a bunch by the road block and i threw a bomb. HUGE explosion! killed so mony people. then i have like a lot of cops after me the only place i could go to was my safehouse. so i went.(almost died though.) or those buissneses which have an upstairs and have windows. shoot out the windows. start killing people like youre a sniper. then go downstairs and sart killing cops. so its repetitive, but you can make your own fun!

One of the best ps2 games around

This game is very good. They only add in a coople people to the stoy line but that is cool. The game folows the movies well. You can even blow up buildings. The only thing i dislike about this game is that is a littel repeditave. Lastly, you can get in high speed cases with the cops.
