GTA but BETTER

This game is pretty much like GTA, same sort of graphics, same way driving, same way shooting...but the the better part is the fighting and how u can threaten people on the streets and scare them instead of just killing them. This pretty much follows "The Godfather" movie story line. For example Luca Brossi dies and Micheal leaves to Sicily. One can create there on MOB face in the game which is really cool. Then you get accepted in the Corleone family, and even get to talk to the DON himself. Unlike other games if your doing a mission with some character to help you, that character doesn't die and kills people instead of just standing there. My favorite mission is when your with Sonny taking over one of the enemy families warehouse. The game is just great and amazing...go and buy it.

A video game you can't refuse....

Releasing video games to promote movies is pretty much the norm. But now the game manufacturers have started making games based off of classic movies. One example is "The Thing".Another is "The Warriors"....But by far, this is quite possibly the most inspired retellings ever brought to the game console. And will be the standard by which all "movie-based" games are judged.

If you are a fan of the Grand Theft Auto series, and if you are a lover of gangster games and was disappointed by the game,Mafia, then you will enjoy yourself on this one.

While this game takes place within the events of The Godfather movie, you are not restricted by them.Nor are you playing any of the characters in the film. You are a peripheral character who participates in the action of the film.

In this game, you are the son of a loyal Corleone soldier who was murdered by Don Barzini when you were ten.As a child you were comforted by Vito Corleone himself (reprised by Marlon Brando for the game before he died) who convinces you to save your anger and use it to take your revenge when the time is right....Years later, the time comes when the Barzinis and Tataglias back up drug kingpin Virgil "The Turk" Sollozo for a drug deal that will give the other families more power than the Corleones. At the same time,Don Corleone places you under the tutelage of Don Vito's most dangerous soldier,Luca Brasi. And thus begins your involvement with the Corleones in the film, begining with driving Brasi to that fateful meeting in which Luca is murdered by Sollozo and Bruno Tataglia.

As the game progresses, your task is to undertake whatever task the Corleones ask of you from extortion of shopkeepers,to hijacking trucks, shaking down racketeers, raiding the operations of rival crime families,to murder (and there will be plenty of that). As you move up the ranks of the Corleone Family and make more money, you'll be assigned increasingly more difficult tasks to perform such as hits of key rivals and hostile takeovers of their operations, all the while getting closer and closer to your ultimate revenge against Don Barzini.

In between, you'll participate in some of the films most memorable moments. For fun,you may want to watch the movie again just to see where you fit in.

Some of the film related tasks are:

1. Going with Pete Clemenza to shoot the treacherous Paulie Gallo ("Leave the gun....Take the Canolis")

2. Sneaking into Hollywood bigshot, Jack Woltz's house and leaving a little present in his bed ("I'll make him an offer he can't refuse.")

3. Carrying out the hit on Sal Tessio ( "Tell Mike it was only business...I always liked him.")

4. The Baptisim murders ("Do you renounce Satan?")

All in all, this is one of those games that's hard to stop playing and the experiance is further heightened by the voices talents of James Caan,Robert Duvall, and Abe Vigoda as Sonny,Tom,and Tessio respectively.Rewards and bonuses include unlockable film clips, upgradable weapons and clothing.

So what do you say?....Ready to join the family?

Sorry to say

When I first played of the game, when I created my character, I was hooked.

It has great story lines and missions. Nice weapons (until you view them in the weapons screen and they are boxy and badly rendered)
Good upgrade system for weapons, health, speed, street smarts, etc.
It was very cool to be in the background of the movie so you were like the guy just waiting for his chance to take control or prove yourself.
I loved the game until 2 major flaws appeared.
#1 I got enough $$ for better clothes in order to increase the respect I get from local characters. When I chose a jacket or coat, as soon as I tried to "save" and "Join the family", the game locked up. I tried multiple times and it did it every time until I took off the coat.
#2 When I took over every family and tried to return to the compound "To discuss my future", the game froze. It froze every time I reloaded and went to the compound. I can't see the ending because of this.
Buy at your own risk. Maybe I got a defective disc.

Too much damn driving !

This game is annoying cause every mission you have to drive like 100 miles to get to the location, so most of the time you are just driving to the destination running over morons that walk out in front of you or stupid slow moving cars.

BORING!!!!! BORING!!! BORING!!!

Let me start by saying I absolutely LOVE The Godfather movies (Part III.. not really). I really had high hopes for the game. I bought it on the first day it came out. I was disappointed at the low quality of graphics but was willing to overlook it if the game was really good. The game was not impressive at all. It was mediocre at best. Some of the missions were interesting (ex: trip to see the movie director), but after you complete all the missions, you must take control of all safehouses, hubs, businesses, etc. It really gets redundant: all of the clubs, brothels, hotels, etc. are exactly alike! Also, I think the chronology of the game would be confusing for someone who has never seen the Godfather before. I would have loved to do a Hyman Roth mission or a "Kill Fredo" mission lol.. Overall, I think the game is a HUGE disappointment. Please DONT WASTE YOUR MONEY! Oh yeah, I really felt like the game was GTA Godfather style.. only GTA is much better.

GTA set in the 40's

There have been a lot of games that have copied the GTA formula in the past few years. I think this is the only one that I have actually enjoyed. The Godfather does a pretty good job of emulating GTA, but has enough different aspects to keep it from being a complete copy-cat. You play as a no-name member of the Corleone family who has to work his way up through the ranks to eventually become the Don of New York. You have to extort businesses for protection money, carry out hit contracts, bribe cops, buy safehouses, rob banks, and take over rackets, warehouses, and other family compounds. In between all this, you get to carry out missions that brilliantly blend into the original Godfather movie. For example, you're assigned the job of beating up the two guys who assaulted the undertaker Bonasera's daughter. You're the guy who plants the gun behind the toilet for Michael Corleone and then drives his getaway car after he kills Solozzo and McCluskey.

Driving control is pretty decent. Targeting is much better than the system used in GTA, although it still has a few glitches. The fighting controls were done very well. You can grab your enemy and use various combinations of the analog sticks to punch him, slam him against a wall, throw him across a room, or choke him to death.

My biggest complaint about the game is that it is way too repetitive. One thing that was always nice about GTA is that the game world was so diverse. Not so in The Godfather. You never really feel like you know your way around the city because everything looks the same. Interiors are used over and over and over again, and the enemies are almost always in the same place, so it becomes fairly predictable. The five family compounds have the exact same layout. It would have been nice to see them put some more work into creating more original environments.

Having said all this, there's about 30-40 hours worth of gameplay here. Granted, it starts to get pretty repetitive after 5-10 hours, but if you don't mind that, it is a pretty fun game otherwise.

Worth the money... for once.

Just a little notice before jumping in:

This game has a lot of reviews, so rather than recapping a lot of story detail, I'm going to focus on the basics that make this game what it is.
-----------

Having said that, if you've played GTA and understand the concept behind "Enter the Matrix" in relation to the Matrix films, you'll have a good idea of how this works.

GTAness:
Complete copy of the free-roam GTA style of play. While some may argue this is bad, the truth of the matter is simply that when properly implemented, it's a superb system. Bottom line is this: I'd rather see a well copied system that works, is fun, and that delivers, than something original thats horribly flawed.

Please Leave- I mean, Enter the Matrix:
The concept behind this title was that it revealed the background work of Ghost and Niobe which aided Neo. In the GodFather, you are Niobe and Ghost. By this I mean, you are the one who planted the gun so Mike could drop the Sergent and Sollazo in the restaurant, drove him here or there, etc. You're the one doing what everyone watching the movie assumes will be done, and done correctly.

The worst thing I can say about this game is it's a tad repetitive, but in a relatively silent manner with respect to "take-overs."

Take-overs:
When you're not engaged in missions your sole job is to take over fronts and the hidden gambling rackets hidden in them. During which you'll be blowing up safes, extorting shop owners, and smacking around a slew of thugs. The term "fronts" applies to stores, hubs, warehouses and compounds. Hubs and warehouses are more difficult to take, have more rival family guards, and yeild more cash!

Controls:
Ah-ha! One of the best things about this game. The controls follow the popular standard of moving, with nothing out of the ordinary. The game relies heavily on wall-shooting (adhering to the wall and poking around the corner to aim), though not entirely required in many situations.

Most Important - Game Competition:
One reason I gave this game 5 stars is because it's the only game which even comes close to achieving a proper "italian mafia" feel to it. The only game that I'm aware of that could be considered an "equal" of this game, is the title: Mafia. Without going into much detail I'll just say that The GodFather pulled through in every area that Mafia failed horribly at (which was pretty much the whole game).

Conclusion:
If you're looking for a game in the mafia genre, this is the one to buy, hands down. The well designed system prevents that "I need a break" feeling from happening every hour and you'll find it easy to become absorbed in the story.

Never go against the family.

"The Godfather" is my favorite movie, so I was a little skeptical about the video game version when I first got it as a present. Now, after over forty hours of playing, I am needless to say over that skepticism. Fans of the movie should love this game as you are trained by Luca Brasi, hired by Tessio, groomed by Tom and Sonny, and finally trusted by Michael Corleone. You plant the gun for Michael to kill Sollotzo, sneak the horse's head into Walsh's bed, and chase Sonny down the Causeway as he races to his doom. But it's not all about the movie. Between missions for the family, you extort businesses, "hit" rivals, and gain respect throughout the excellently rendered neighborhoods of New York. Yes, the "non-family" missions do get repetitive, but I personally think extortion is the most fun part of the game. There's nothing like smashing a guy's shop with a baseball bat, throwing him to the ground, and pointing a gun at his head to get him to give you his money. This game is well worth purchasing. No matter the price, it's an offer you can't refuse.

Nothing new

Different companys make different versions of sport games right? EA, 989 studios, etc. The thing they all have in common is the fact that they are making a game about hockey, or what ever sport. The Godfather has done this. If you've played Grand Theft Auto, you've played a part of the Godfather. Godfather throws in some things like needing to pay off the police and an intimidation meter so it wont be a total clone. The targeting system is flawed but a little better than GTA's and the little map in the corner shows the actual street name not to look like another clone. If you like GTA, you might like this. If you liked the movie, you might enjoy this. If you're looking for something new...you wont find one bit of anything original.

Major Glitch (not anymore)

During high speed chases the road would suddenly vanish from beneath the vehicle resulting in losing and having to start over again. When I slowed down during the same chase I would still lose because the other vehicle got too far ahead of me. I bought this game NEW, and factory sealed. The collectors addition. I still think it's a good game but I am going to have to return it because of the glitch. *UPDATE* I did return the game in exchange for another of the same. The glitch I mentioned before is not on the replaced game! May have been that the previous game had encountered the glitch during its process (a rarity) at the factory. Overall score now is 4 out of 5 STARS.
