Gimme a Break!

THIS GAME ROCKS!!! (pun)

Of course a lot of gamers belch out that one for the lamest games around. But in this case I find it to be right on the money.

First let me say that I hate DARK games..Let me see doggone it! And Warhammer 40K is about the darkest game I've come across, It still rocks. Thank the gods for the nightvision option, I do wish it lasted a little longer.

I love the original 40K book/board game, but putting that aside, this game still rocks. The 40K theme is just an added bonus. It did take me by surprise that I would be fighting against the Imperium though, but what the hay Space Marines have to die too.

As far as the controls, like the above/below review mentioned, it's just like 4 or 5 other games. Left view, right move, it even lets you set the movement/sight ratio to let your controller's sensitivity move you along faster or slower. L1 fire, SQ change weapons, I had it down after the first level. Which you have to or you DIE, over and over.

Graphics are great, yes it is a little dark, but when you can see I find the scenery more than adequate, if you HAVE the time to look around. Because, this is a very fast pace game, if you stand in one spot for more than a minute you'll be attacked.

Weapons, weapons, who's got the weapons? I/you are always on the look out for the biggest and badest guns. Some shoot fast but aren't powerful, some are powerful but don't hold many bullets or refills are hard to come by. I found it best to have a Tau weapon for power and carry an enemy gun so I can have plenty of refills, seeing how you can grab reloads from the fallen. The occasional melda-guns are really powerful, but you can rarely fill one up with ammo. They are placed close to strong enemy though, so I usually grab one use it up then drop it for the one I had before. Note, take notice if you only have one or two rounds chambered in your weapon, there's nothing worse than jumping out into a crowd of angary space marines and having to reload.

Fire Warrior isn't just smash and grab. Although a lot of the main play is run threw, there are a few curve balls they throw at ya, from time to time, I think just to give you a little break between white knuckle battles. I had to sit and scratch my head a few times, wondering just where the heck to go.

And almost every level has a secondary O.P. that you may choose to pass up, but they're usually out of your way, run go figure this out and still make it out in time, "kinda things" that I didn't start getting until my second trip threw. You have to beat the game on normal mode before hard mode kicks in. (If you pause the missions are listed on the screen as well as the option to hear the last few radio broadcasts.)

The AI is as good as any of the latest PS2 games I've played Red Faction, TimeSplitter 2, although none of them will knock Halo off the top shelf. Yes, you do have the random "Stuck Feet" when you just happen to step in the perfect place, your just stuck in the mud, can't move, but what games don't have those. And yes some of the sergeants with grenades throw them at walls killing themselves, I say, thank goodness I don't have to kill that grenade totin' S.O.G.

The commodores and captains in the beginning are kinda hard to beat, considering the weapons you have to start with, but this just prepares you for the real fighting with the heavily armored Space Marines to come later in the game. Some of the Terminator/monsters in this game are just unbelievably tough, as they would be in "Real Life".

OK..so there's got to be a negative! Well, if I had to find fault with this game, I'd say it would be the lack of a backpack. Yes, you can carry a hand full of grenades and you do have a primary and secondary weapon, even a sword if you run outta ammo. But gimme a back pack, an extra health or 5 would help a good deal and we all like collecting odd trinkets threw our games. Medals, rare pistols, a flaming bayonet something out of the ordinary. But really health and a full clip of bullets is all a real Tau warrior needs anyway.

All this said, if you like first person shooters this one is a must have, if you like 40K this is a must have, if you like a game that can keep you on the edge of your seat for many many hours, this is the game for you.

But be prepared, When you hit the ground you better be running, and shooting and looking for ammo and health. Or you'll DIE DIE DIE!!!!

Oh yeah..Did I mention this game is DARK!

Hope for the PS2

First of all, ignore every other review you read here at venerable ol' Amazon.com

Even if they had a good point, it was lost by the use of 8 year old grammar.

THIS game may be the saving FPS for PS2, and while not getting the commercial support, from a technical standpoint may be the only thing Sony has against the Halo Juggernaught. With so many once loyal MoH fans turning their backs on Rising Sun (im not sure why) PS2 needs a hit. FPS are entering a new era, spearheaded by Halo and hopefully DOOM3, unfortunately, both are for XBox (fine for me, ive got both ps2 and the x)leaving PS2 a tad High And Dry.

Enter Games Workshop and their remarkably gritty British gaming world of Warhammer 40,000. While merry ol' England may not at first seem to be the source for grit, as compared to our own oliver stone and quentin tarantino culture, their form of grit is one born of apathy. Look at so many examples of their darker exploits, like Judge Dredd and Death's Head. Very Dark properties indeed.

So how does WH40K jump onto that bandwagon? By dooming us all. In the FAR FAR future (40,000 is the YEAR) we are a species consumed with warfare. An archaic symbol of a once proud Emperor now sits immortally on his Golden Throne, kept alive through unnatural technical means, while mankind breeds enormous super soldiers capable of spitting acid, crushing a mans skull with a few fingers, and wear huge explosion proof armour suits. Vicious Aliens, including Eldar (think space elves, but more violent) Orks (think orcs, and...well, yeah...orcs.) and Tau (think techno-samurai) amongst many others which come and go (necrons=terminators, etc)
not to mention the thousands of Space Marines who joined the daemonic forces of chaos and were changed by the hell spawned powers of the Warp, returning these Chaos Marines to murder and plague that which they once loved.

Pretty dark eh?

well this is the world this game takes place in. a thriving gaming community has kept Games Workshop in business for a couple of decades now, despite costing around $5 per miniature (and a typical army would be about 30 soldiers or so, to begin)
I myself run 3 armies (Sisters of Battle, Chaos Marines of Khorne, and The Dark Angels) and yet this game far supercedes any expectation i could have had.

instead of you being the space marine, noble and gallant (think Sega Saturns' Space Hulk) you are a young Tau, whose people have been attacked and kidnapped by self righteous human space marines.
Now.
Take THAT storyline concept, give it the same gameplay mechanics as Halo, and the scripted event on the fly concept that MoH: Frontline gave us, and youve got Fire Warrior.

thats quite a buildup, so ill throw in the bad and ugly...

Its ONLY on PS2. but like i said, ps2 deserves its fair share of fps too.

Enemy graphics get a little stale. Yes we all know the xbox can out perform the ps2 any day, but still, for the first few missions the humans look identical, only 3 colored suits!

Look response is a tad slow. this is mainly a design flaw in the ps2 compared to the analog controllers on the xbox remote.

auto-save
i hate auto-save, because i invariably die just before i hit the next one and will have to re run the entire mission.

but dont let those stop you. this game is excellent, and makes good use of every inch the ps2 can give.

Not bad

Fire Warrior isn't the best FPS on PS2, but it surely isn't the worst. However, don't expect it to be the HALO for PS2. First off, FW has a decent load of gameplay in it for a shooter. Some shooters i've played are incredible...then they end in 2 or 3 hours. You can expect to get 9+ hours on the story mode. And for all you lucky boys and girls with broadband, the online function will keep you entertained for a while as well. The graphics, while not mind-blowing, aren't too bad either. The sound is also very clear and crisp. One thing I actually liked in this game was that it was quite difficult. Even on easy mode you'll be in for a good challenge. So in the end, if your looking for an all-around FPS, this is a good buy.

Get Dawn of War instead

First of all, aaargh, this game is just plain boring. Im lucky i only rented it because if i bought it would have been a complete waste of money. The graphics aren't good, the fun you get out of it is extremely limited, and it will do you more good spending your money on a stupid cuddly toy. Personally, i would buy Dawn of War instead. It has better graphics, it's based on warhammer 40k more than Fire Warrior(if you're a 40k fan), you can choose from orks, eldar, space marines and chaos, you can paint your own armies, zoom in to one gretchin's massive nose or his gun which is over half as big as him, or tell your force commander to call an orbital bombardment and the game is just pure fun. The best thing is that all units have unique finishing moves eg. a dreadnought picks up an ork, squishes the life out of him and hurls him into the distance

what is the crying?

I am not a fan of warhammer, but I cannot see too much flaws in this game...the textures are very well done(considering the ps2 capabilities), the controls...I did read someone saying that he cannot get acostumed to the control scheme, but this game uses the same control configuration as Red faction, medal of honor and other shooters in the ps2, you must have total control on both analog joysticks to master the movements...this is nothing new, maybe this guy "is new" to fps in ps2-.

The only drawback that I found in this game is the online capabilities and the multiplayer that are very lacking compared to other games, the single player experience is excellent. Maybe it is no HALO(Xbox) but man...if you want something like that on the ps2...you'll have to wait...maybe until ps3. If you dont want to wait then...just buy an xbox and play your so blessed HALO.

Could have been a real challange to HALO

The action and story in this game is intense and captures you from the first battle. The one down side to this game is that the graphics are just average at best. With such a great story and pulse pounding action I am disappointed with the lack of detail in the graphics. The graphics remind of DOOM or Duke Nukem, not what you expect in todays gaming world.
But with that said the story in this game is fun, new, and exciting. All of things I have been missing in first person PS2 games. With better graphics this game could have challanged HALO easily.

Could be Better

Ive been a 40k fan for awhile and have been eagerly anticipating the release of this game. It kept getting pushed back and pushed back, building my hopes up each time. So when it finally came out I snatched it up. Playing around a bit I realized it was not what I had expected. So far the single player is cool, but not ground breaking. The biggest upset however came in the multiplayer mode. A limited number of weapons and levels paired with the lack of bots make for an almost boring experience. Dont get me wrong I like this game, but if not for the 40k theme this title would bring little to the table. If your looking for a good FPS for PS2 pick up Time Splitters 2 or Red Faction 2 for they both offer hours worth of variety that Fire Warrior sadly just doesn't have.

worth a rental

Warhammer Fire Warrior is just worth a rental. Just like many fps shooter out there, the replay value is not very long, unless you play through the whole campaign on a harder setting. Well in contrast there isn't any replay value what so ever.

I was given the game from my friend because he was selling his Playstation 2. I was somewhat excited because it Warhammer, but i knew that it would never be halo. The opening cut scene look so cool and i started to wonder maybe it isn't all that bad. Little did i know that it was the only above par in the whole game. The opening scene was very cool, but sadly the game doesn't even look anything as good as the scene. You start off the game with a average training to say the least. There nothing new here, nothing that haven't been done by halo or any other fps. Well halo wasn't actually that good. In fact the training didn't even tell you how to use your sword, you would have to look it up in your manual. Well in my opinion, training mission aren't really important, what really important is the fun factor.

Now moving on, the game start off as you are in a tau dropship. You have a few tau soldier on board(around 4 or 5)and an instructor that tell you how many second is left before landing.
The ship is pretty cool in it own right. Once you land the al bots actually get out of the ship before you can even start, which is ridiculous. Now you can really see the battlefield for the first time and say wow. Sadly your al bots really suck because their armor is so weak. The enemy al are a lot smarter that your own. The game start off as you begin to fight enemy in a narrow corridor sort of like the trench in WWI. It actually better than a non linear path because it harder to get lost. In fact i would laugh at you if you couldn't find your way around. That is just a figure of speech showing how easy the pathfinding is. Along the way you meet up with a few other tau warrior (not as many as call of duty) which feel less intense but as you could guess, they die so fast you wonder why do they even fight. after you kill some enemy (space marine) you enter building which you have to kill the space marine sargent (the one with the navy hat and a chainshaw) and to my surprise you can't pick up the chainshaw because once he die, his body quickly disappear. One of the thing i like about this game is there is only three keys and you can find them whenever you kill a sargent. Another thing is like halo 2 where you have a recharge shield, once your in a heat of battle, quickly retreat and wait till your shield is up and continue the battle, which is better than not having one. Another thing is the health pickup seem to be everywhere which is easier for a less intense battle. Now what sort of bother me is the death animation of the enemy and your own is pretty lame, not only does the enemy die slowly, but often time you find yourselve wasting 20 to 30 bullet and then found out they are already hit after the 6 bullet. And sometime when you think their dead, they are actually just crouching. Another bad point about this game is the space marine take too many bullet to bring them down, fortunately you have a lot of bullet in your weapon. Another strong point in the game is that you can only carry a primary and a secondary weapon only just like halo. Some might argue that this is a bad thing but your primary weapons can't be swap for another weapon, only your secondary weapon can be swap. Which make sense considering that this is the tau main firepower (hense the name fire warrior). The gun themselve doesn't justify themselve. What i mean is the different gun in the game doesn't really differ themselve from one another. You might be surprise but throughout the course of the game i use the same secondary weapon throughout each mission. Another not so hot point of the game is no matter what gun you decided to pick up, you can still kill load of enemy. Here an example, the two gun that you use in your training mission actually fire the same bullet with the same rate of fire, and the secondary fire is the same just a more rapid fire rate. This is really a shame considering that this game could have been so much more.

Now after you found the key, kill all hostile forces, and unlock door, you face an enemy gunship. It took me a couple of time to defeat the gunship. The secret is that you have to shoot the fan on both side of the gunship before it can be destroy. After you have destroy the gunship your dropship approach at your extraction point. Go up to the door and it will open for you, then turn right and turn another right, and go up the stair and turn right and you will see your dropship ( remind me of halo) and enter it, your first mission is a success. Depending how well you do in the mission, you gain point or ranks.

Sadly there is no cut scene after you finish your first mission, and you find yourselve in the same familar spot. The same, plain boring dark, desert like spot ( think of mars). Your second mission require you to find the key, kill the enemy, and unlock door (doesn't this sound familar?). The whole game is actually like the first two mission. It get really repetitve after a short time. The only reason i play this game was because i wanted to see what the ending was like, which i won't spoil the fun for you.

The tank for the enemy in the game is pretty awesome when you first saw it jump over a huge gap above your head and stand in awe. Sadly their is not that much vehicle in the game. A huge downer was the fact that the game take one day throughout the mission so basically everything is the same. It would have been a whole lot better if you could fight in different environment and as different races. Fire warrior isn't the borinest game but it isn't the funnest either. The sound of your instructure sound too human and don't fit it profile as a tau. One thing that i thought they should add was tau and human civilian and drivable vehicle. The game has more con than pro that it overshawdow all hopes of a good game.

In short it only worth a rental and just that. Don't waste your money on this game even if it is only 20 bucks.

P.S. I am 17 and didn't feel it was important to write my email.

Pretty cool!

I love Warhammer and have been collecting an army for 4 years, so when this came out I knew I had to buy it. The combat is pretty cool, and there is a lot of shooting and grenade throwing. I have to admit the AI isn't all that smart, but they make up for it with LOTS of soldiers. You have a few allies sometimes, but they usually die within a few minutes and I always like having a few guys tag along with me. The graphics are kind of blotchy, something you would expect from a playstation 1 or an N64. I think if Americans had made this they could have made it a good bit better. It's still a good game and I would recomend it to anyone who wants a fun, cheap FPS.

First, im not 12. If i was 12, i wouldn't be allowed to play this game because it is rated M.

I rented this game, and im glad. This game is good but not that good. I thought the graphics of this game were good (I dont know why you people relate it to Halo and SOCOM!!!!). I have never played Halo so i wouldn't know what it is like. But of course Fire Warrior is not going to be like Halo! If you play warhammer 40k alot then you probably will like this game.

If you read the other reviews, some will say that the characters all look the same. I play warhammer (not to much though, too much money) and all the models are supposed to look kind of the same. That is what warhammer is. all the space marines and the imperium have similar colored uniforms. They are supposed too.

But, I only rented the game and didnt get very far into it. I did think that it was a bit hard. Also you people who say that it could use more guns... warhammer has a wide arsenal of futuristic weapons, but each race has a... I geuss you could call it, a main weapon. Okay. Not many guns. But does SOCOM have many guns too. SOCOM II sure doesnt. I own SOCOM II and i dont like it. To much like Splinter Cell. Those two games i just mentioned dont have a wide aray of weapons either. Fire Warrior had more weapons in the first level than SOCOM II or Splinter Cell had throughout the game.

I probably wouldnt buy this game, but you might want to rent it if you like and play warhammer alot.
I still cant get over the fact that you people related it to Halo. What the hell! Of course its no Halo.
