finally!!! the need for speed franchise brings the import tuner world to the pc for gamers like you and me. Career mode aspect of the game puts you against bosses and regular racers. wile you start from the bottom with small cars like the honda civic or the dodge neon. but working you way up you unlock cars like the acura RSX or the nissan 350z. customization of these cars is pretty sweet but the underground 2 game does it even better. drift is introduced in this game too. Drift is when you slide around the track racking up as many points as possible so you can win. it takes a little getting used to but you can get really good at it . the drag tracks are stoopid awesome with huge jumps an traffic dodging. the only thing that this game needs is some good ol' cop chases, but this is still an awesome game no matter what.

For older players

I think Need For Speed Underground might be a fun game for older players. My 8 year old enjoyed the game, but was constantly frustrated at only being able to race on one or two tracks because he couldn't ever win enough games to unlock the next level. I would definitely not recommend this game for younger players.

Fun, but not educational

My child enjoys this game, for hours at a time. That's exactly the problem. The game is good, it is not violent, and it's fun. It is also addictive.

If you don't mind the addictive nature of computer games, and want something that is fun, but non-violent, this is a good choice.

Shiny and frantic

The underground mode has 112 races in it and by the time you take to complete it, you will a good knowledge of what street racing fanatics live for.
The graphics are superb. The blur option can induce some weird feelings if you are sensible. Everything has a coat of shine that reflects on everything. The opponents are difficult but fortunately you can adjust the difficulty settings for each race.
I will give you one tip. Late in the races, if you have any difficulty winning, take off all the upgrades in your car. Your opponents will do the same and you should be faster that all of them. However, do not make too much mistakes because they will catch you up pretty fast.
There is so much parts and vinyls to unlock that you can spend a lot of time to personalize your car.
I did not try the online mode however.

FUN IS THE WORD!!

the graphics are amazing, cars are great..

after i have played NFSU 2,the first game is still harder to play compared to the the second one and more challenging...

the music tracks are great, you can really feel the music pulsating when driving the cars, your hands are shaking with excitement when reaching the finishing line....:]

it is addictive and i recommend it to those who love fast cars..

By today's standards, this is still one awsome game. Plenty of visual treats for the eyes. For some reason the road looks shiny and glossy. I'm not aware of roads looking like that in real life, but it still works for this game. Just put the game on full settings. Sure the music will either work or not work, depending on your preferences. But fortunately there's a download out there you can use to actually change the music(not an official download, but hey you gotta change the music right?). Search and you'll find it. Infact, that's why I'm playing this game more than NFSU 2 right now, because I can change the music.

Not everyone is into the Drag and Drift and the included music, so for fun I give it 4 stars. But regardless of like or dislike, the quality is great so overall it's 5 stars for this one.

I *love* this game!

What I do NOT like about this game, is:

1) the amount of time it takes for it to start. First you get the "EA Games - Challenge Everything", intro, followed by the THX logo (if THX is important to me, I'll look for it on the box; no need to mention it every friggin' time I start the game!), followed by a brief scene of a race car. Unless you press a key at this point, you also get some guy who warns you to (IRL) drive safely and responsibly. Yawn! It's with strong feelings of nostalgia that I think back and remember Doom, where you could skip the repetitive crap by simply pressing ENTER. Doom seemed to never throw away key strokes from the keyboard buffer.
2) The differences between the cars are limited. As another reviewer pointed out, you can start with the cheapest car available, and by the end of the game (through some modding) you can still keep up with all the other cars. This seems unlikely as the other cars are way more expensive than the car you started with -and I doubt the mods can compensate for that.
3) I don't like drag and drift races but there's no way to skip 'em. However, I guess you need those lows to appreciate the highs of the actual racing. Fortunately it IS possible to do the drift and drag races at an easy level (in drifting it also helps to use bad tires), so they don't take much time to get past.

But all in all, I think it's a great game. Admittedly, I'm not an expereienced game player (the only other racing game I know well is ReVolt), but I guess there are lots of people like me out there, and they may consider this a recommendation.

I often end a lost race with a frustrated exclamation of the F-word, followed immediately by the realisation that: "I *love* this game!!"

Great 3D action for those who suffer from 3D seasickness

Other reviews cover just about everything, but I'd like to add one important feature for us unfortunate few:

For whatever reason, I can't play Doom type 3D games without getting pretty darn seasick after 20 minutes or so. I have had to give up on a number of games, such as Vampire Bloodlines, because going up and down stairs was just too much. Anyway, I have a number of friends who suffer the same thing.

I tried both Need for Speed Undergound and Need for Speed Underground 2. While the latter has a wonderful open feel of roaming around, it did make me seasick. The first Need for Speed does not! It's still wonderful visually. I wish I could explore without racing, as in the sequel, but still the tradeoff is well worth it.

You can't deny a great game.

Regardless of your personal views of illegal street racing, Need For Speed : Underground provides an unmatched thrill-ride in the racing genre. You may think the cars look silly, you may think the reckless people who drag race them down public streets should all be arrested, but when you slap it all into a well-polished video game package, the appeal is undeniable. Whether its the allure of the tuner subculture or just an enjoyment of racing games in general that draws you in, I can almost gaurantee you'll be hooked after the first few 100 mile an hour tours of NFS:U's virtual metropolis.

The driving engine offered here is both friendly yet complex, allowing beginners to quickly pick up and become familiar with it, and more seasoned players to exploit a number of skillful feats to shave precious seconds off their lap times. In addition, it has an excellent "feel" to it. Both the car's physics and the motion of the camera will constantly react to even the slightest control input as you send your tricked-out racers barreling across intersections and down narrow alleyways at break-neck speeds.

As much as I personally enjoy games like GTA and Mafia which allow you to race recklessly down city streets, the average cookie-cutter racing sim has never really appealed to me much. You get a fancy car, you get a nice open track, and you get to drive around it; I can't say the formula excites me much. NFS:U picks up the dynamic slack that most racing games lack, providing you with an interesting "real" environment for your racing exploits and additionally allowing a broad degree of freedom for how to fine tune both the performance and appearance of your cars. This means that, hey, you don't like the way pimped-out street racers look? You don't have to race one. Your ride can be as wild or as domesticated as you want it to be, but the racing experience will always be the former.

Some of the races can be pretty tense, especially into the later portion of the game, but the learning curve is pretty smooth so by the time you've worked your way to that point you should be able to handle the extra ante of competition.

All in all an excellent racing game that is accessible to casual players yet offers plenty of rewards for those who put in their dues behind the virtual wheel.

very good game except in drag mode

i find this game to be very good except in one thing. When you enter drag mode, you can not select witch transmission type you want. I personally like manual anyway, but they only give you that option in drag mode. This may be a difficulity to newer racing game players. Another thing i have to say bad about thhe game is it is too hard to beat, it took me and my friends 5 weeks stragiht to beat it.
