Great addition to next gen gaming

4 Rating: 4, Useful: 5 / 6

**I really wished I could have givien this game 4.5 stars but since I can't I have to give it what I can...but this is not to say that the game isn't deserving...I just think some of the things that got hyped up in all the previews fell kinda short and that is what kept me from giving it a 5**

Ok...so 12+ hrs later...

Here is my first impressions of GTA IV.

Let me start off by saying that ign.com gave this game a 10 and they actually they had a disclaimer at the end of the review explaining that...while not 'perfect', for what the game does...in thier eyes it earned a 10....good save.

I am about a good 1/2 way thru the first island's missions and I have:

beat up gangsters threatening my cousin
thrown a man out of a window 3 stories to his death
Went bowling and played darts
Watched the cops arrest a guy for illegal credit cards
said no to weed from a ganga smoking Rasta
had warm coffee...hint hint...
played darts
Wrecked enough havoc with the LCPD to make any criminal blush....and got away...
Made it with some random ho in a park and blew her away
Of course, checked out the Strip Club
Watched Katt Williams on TV (for some odd reason, not a funny as it could be...lol)
Saw a magic show
Accidentally ran my car into the river and survived!!!

Now guess which ones were in a mission and not!

I am going to start off some of the cons of the game and get it over with because while expectations are high, let's bring it down a few notches and make sure people don't get too overly hyped about the game.

- display issues: I am not sure what happened here but some some reason Rockstar decided to run this game at 720p. When displayed on my TV, The rght portion of my screen is partially cut off...I can't really see how many stars I have and sometimes it's a tiny bit of a challenge telling what weapons are being used or how many bullets you have left.

- ducking the cops: Ok....this is a mixed bag of a new innovation. While I do like the idea of any trouble you start brings up a proximinty circle of where the cops will come to the scene of a crime, sometimes it's far too easy to get away, even when you have done something that warrants the SWAT team to come in. Even still if after you lose them and come back in almost immediately after the circle disappears, there is no particular reason for the cops to continually be on the lookout for you....maybe I am nitpicking but at least in other iterations, when you have set off every possible alarm, it was nearly impossible to shake the cops and made getting away very harrowing....because once you got up to 5 and 6 stars the cops were very persistant....but then...with as apathetic as cops really are, this may be real...LOL.

- Speaking of, no real reprecussions and consequences for actions in some cases: One thing I think I would like to have seen more of is, if you do something, the is a bit more of a reaction for the crowd. For instance, I was at a club and some bouncers tried to jump me, I went to town with my shotgun...maybe 2 or 3 people moved. With the way that the AI was hyped in this game, I was hoping more for a stampede for the doors and maybe a 911 call. Same with being out on the street, I robbed and shot someone in broad day light....now while a few people ran, most still carried on thier business and not one frantic call to 911...but again...this may be sad testimony to what kind of empathy to people...LOL. The only time you do have to worry is if the cops are in proximity to the crime being committed.

And that pretty much are my only issues with the game...as far as everything else well:

I am very impressed with the storyline and voice acting. This has always been a very top notch standard with Rockstar and GTA games. I also like the fact that if you are with characters during missions, the dialogue doesn't just happen in the cutscenes, it also flows with you and the NPCs as you travel. For instance, you find out more about what Roman has gotten himself into, Michelle asks about your stay in America, Little Jacob, if you can understand his heavily West Indian accent explains why he needs someone he can trust to do his errands and so forth, so count on interactions like that throughout the game beyond cutscenes not to mention most missions do seem to run a little differently and sometimes have added twists

I was also graphically and aurally with the environment. The game really pushes the 360's power! No matter what GTA you have ever played it has always looked kinda sterile despite the grittiness. In this iteration, all you need is smells, good and bad. When you are nicer lookng neighborhoods, you can really tell...when you are in bad areas...ditto.

And aurally, with all the ambient noices...second only to Assassin's Creed (despite all the shortcomings of the game, really listen to the background chatter!) in quality to make you almost feel like you are 'there'.

Everything else that IGN touched on as far as getting around, getting missions and so forth is on point.

The control, once you get the hang of it is fairly decent. The fight controls could have been a bit tighter, but it works. The cover system is actually pretty nice and an added improvement to the game.

Now while I did talk a bit down about the AI, let me tell you how it is when it really does work. You can sometimes go along and see some really random occurances in a course of the day.

There is more traffic on the street at 2pm than there is at 2am and this is still depending on what part of town you are in. I saw a random instance in which a cop chased down a thief and held him at gunpoint. I saw people use thier cell phones. I saw where early in the morning you see people out sweeping the sidewalk. I alos noticed that late at night you see more garbage trucks...but what was most priceless was a womon walking along sipping a soda...walks PAST a trashcan...and drops the cup in the street....yes...she litters!!

Yes, there are so many little nuances in this game that can be picked up on and so much randomness going on that it does make it seem 'alive' but you still kind of wish for more but.....that's not what the whole game is about.

As far as multiplayer, it's a lot smoother than I thought it was going to be, I really haven't had a chance to delve estensively into it as of yet but I played around in a set up with 10 people and noticed no lag whatsoever...it's smooth like butter.

What I will say, and this is one of the reasons why I am not big on doing multiplayers with a whole lot of strangers, is that the kids and the knuckleheads that have gotten this game will abuse the language more than what it needs to be abused. If you got sensitive ears...just be prepared..otherwise I recommend that you find a group of friends and set up your own private match and play.

All in all, GTA IV is the must play game of the year, I can't fully endorse the 10 unless you count the story and all the random mini games but, so far the game is so tight , that I do believe that Saint's Row II will have it's work cut out for it.

SO pick it up, go bowling, make sure you watch TV, and listen out for Jack Thompson's being a stripper reference!!

A Disappointing Successor to GTA: San Andreas

First of all, understand that novels could be written about almost any Grand Theft Auto game.

Also, understand that this particular author has been playing Grand Theft Auto since it was a top-down, 2-dimensional game on Pentium 100mhz systems. The Playstation 1 was still the hottest gaming system in existence, and GTA was well beyond its capabilities.

GTA:San Andreas was simply a revolutionary game. It provided a massive playing field with no load times - two firsts for the GTA series. It also incorporated a wonderful handful of "extracurricular activities" that provided nothing whatsoever to the requirements of the game, but still gave players the opportunity for hours of additional entertainment. I'm referring to such things as flying aircraft (even the hidden jumbo-sized jet,) customizing cars, managing large-volume garages, collecting money from acquired businesses, etc. I played San Andreas for hours after beating it.

Most - if not all - of this content has been abandoned in this much-hyped Grand Theft Auto IV. Note that I have not yet completed the game, but in just my first two hours of game play realized that GTA had in many ways gone back to the basics. Yes, the visuals are amazing. I am constantly impressed by the bullet holes that not only show up, but remain on the vehicles. Just recently I noticed that each vehicle has an internal dome light. Aerial views of the city (only available via helicopter as all jets and planes have been reverted back to the "look but don't touch" forms of pre-San Andreas games) are simply astounding.

But I think many gamers will agree that looks aren't everything. Cars are incredibly difficult to drive - yes they handle much like the big, heavy cars we drive today. They tend to understeer when braking, and oversteer when attempting high-speed, emergency-brake maneuvers. Driving at high speeds has become a rather nerve-wracking ordeal, especially when being chased. The most annoying inclusion is that of the cell phone - cleverly used to enhance core missions within the game, but otherwise a constant annoyance as other, non-player characters are constantly asking your character out on play dates. Sorry - that's why I quit playing "The Sims."

The missions - in my opinion - are rather simplistic. More annoyingly, they act as a seemingly unending tutorial as every mission teaches you a new skill (usually just a new button sequence) that then you seem to never use again.

GTA IV has returned to the days of nearly-linear, one-after-another, non creative missions with a few added "modernizations" like the afore-mentioned cell phones, internet cafes and toll booths (yes, I know - I'm not sure what they were thinking with that one, either.) Gone is the stuff that made Gran Theft Auto fun, unique, and inventive. My only hope is that they were simply testing the graphical limits of the newest generation in gaming consoles, and have much more up their sleeves for another version.

In a quick sidebar, the multiplayer aspects of GTA IV are much better than I expected. I have already logged many hours simply romping around the city with friends and even family. I won't hesitate to say that I am simply impressed with what they have managed to do with the [real] internet - this is what we've been missing for a very, very long time. Does it save GTA IV? Quite possibly. Does it give you enough incentive to finish the game? Not sure yet.

To put things to a close, Grand Theft Auto IV is a beautiful game with still a lot to do. But GTA has been better, and in the end I can't help but feel dissapointed.

I also wish to offer my dissatisfaction to the online game-reviewing sites who have obviously offered stellar, "perfect" scores to an obviously undeserving game in the interest of extra income through promotions, advertisement and industrial "butt kissing." Shame on you all.

Why So Serious?

When I play a GTA game I expect action, over the top violence, and glorious satire. What I don't look for is a morality play. GTA IV, though it carries over many of the elements from prior iterations, has finally acquired one thing it never needed: a conscience. Now I'm not sure if this "evolution" came about via the maturation of the game designers or because of pressure from conservative groups, but if there is one thing I absolutely loathe is any form of media trying to instill some moral compass in my soul. Whether it's Niko rambling about the "horrors of his prior life", receiving touching e-mails from his mum, or complaining aloud at how pathetic it is that he is paying a prostitute for sex, this sequel feels strangely separate from the rest of the GTA franchise. Don't even get me started on the need to show the evils of alcohol or helping a junkie go home. It is ironic that a series based on excessive sex and violence suddenly decides it needs to deride what made it popular in the first place.

The missions are still fun as ever with some creative twists along the way. Adding a cover system was well past due as well as creating a bit of depth in hand to hand fighting with the ability to block.

The firendship and dating segments I could have done without. The entire point to preserving relationships are the advantages these relationships give you whether it is reducing a three star wanted level, a free taxi ride, healing, etc. The only problem is that you cannot use these advantages during missions so why bother cultivating them in the first place? The dates are boring and the pay offs nil.

One feature I miss from San Andreas was the ability to either fatten up or improve your physique. That and other customizable possibilities, ranging from hair cuts to tattoos, are sorely lacking here. The best you can do is buy a limited number of outfits and even then the range doesn't really mean much.

The worst point for me was the in-game radio stations. One thing I loved about GTA III to San Andreas were the hilarious talk shows and the awesome soundtracks. With the budget behind this game, the soundtrack is noticeably light on anything of value and the talk shows are nowhere near as creative. I largely turned the radio off during play because of how boring I felt though I did acquire a taste for Radio Vladivostok.

I hate to say it, but I had to force myself to finish this game. I never thought I'd ever say that about a GTA game. Though the missions are varied and exciting at times, the story is dull and plodding. The ability to "make choices" really doesn't amount to much and makes me wonder why they included it. Sure, you can refuse to kill certain characters at times but they only pop up later to offer a mission or two and don't effect the overall plot.

Saints Row, what many have called a GTA knockoff, kept my attention better than this game. Saints Row is wild, rebellious, and over the top; something GTA used to be. If Rockstar wants to go all melodramatic, that is their choice. Me, I'd rather have a game with more customizable features, outrageous moments, and less of a moral message. It's a game, not a sermon. For that I'd go to church.

Unbelievably disappointing

I bought this game based on the so called "10" reviews from the major outlets. I now no longer trust reviews from these so called major outlets. San Andreas was awesome, but this one is just... so blah.

Why?

#1. A story that went no where. "Godfather" of video games? That's laughable. There is nothing that propels the story forward.
#2. Characters that have no depth. Stupid villains and extraneous characters. I didn't care for any of the characters in the game.
#3. Gimped game play from previous game. They took out all the elements that were fun in the previous games.
#4. Money serves no purpose in the game! You can't buy anything in the game!
#5. After the first 3 hours, the game became repetitive and boring.

Rockstar, you've lost a fan.

Immersion is the key...

Don't go into this game thinking they've re-invented the wheel. If you do that, you're liable to end up like some of the other disappointed folks that posted less-then-stellar reviews.
No, this game is not about revolutionary character graphics or controls. It's about immersion. The story has been credited as being on the same level as "Goodfellas" or "The Godfather" - just incredibly deep and rich. The environment too, I must admit, is extremely impressive. To any of you fairly new to the game that haven't tried out the multiplayer "party mode" yet, I highly recommend you do. Since "party mode" will give you access to the full city, you'll be able to hijack a chopper and really explore the expansive and beautifully rich world of Liberty City.

My least favorite part of the game has to be the driving controls. For a gamer like me - someone who just wants to mash down on the gas peddle and be able to take corners at blinding speed - the "realistic" car physics gets a little tough to get used to.

Overall an amazing game. Highly recommended!

Great! But not Perfect

Let me be clear and start of by saying GTA is a really good game. BUT I do think it is overrated. It's not perfect. A lot of game sites gave it a 10/10. I would give it somewhere around an 8.5. I'm just going to point out some of the flaws in this review because I think you can find GTA4's strengths in any other review, so this review will necessarily sound negative/ranting, but I did like the game.

I really don't like Niko. I think Rockstar did a horrible job of developing his character. The most immediate pet peeve is his accent - the voice acting was terrible. It sounds like someone mocking an eastern European accent. But more fundamentally, the character is ultimately unconvincing because throughout the game he teeters back and forth between angst-driven man with a mission to nice, polite gentleman. It's painful to watch conversations with other characters in the game where Niko dishes out relationship advice like one of those Dear Abby columnists.

Which brings me to a related peeve: the dialogue. It's pretty bad. Interactions between characters feel very unnatural. It's pretty solid at first (I'm not an expert on Jamaican dialect, but Little Jacob sounded convincing to me), but the second half of the game feels very rushed - particularly the dialogue between Niko and his primary female friend toward the end of the game.

Of course poor characters + poor dialogue will almost inevitably lead to poor plot. I guess storyline isn't the main draw for the GTA series, but I wish Rockstar put more effort into it, since it's otherwise a solid game. I don't want to give away any spoilers, but you find out what Niko's primary motivation is a few missions into the game. Other than a few minor hiccups here and there, there aren't any real surprises as the game more or less makes a predictable, straight bee-line toward resolution. Most disappointing is that the game fails to really flesh out Niko's past, and subsequently the villain characters in the game are under-developed - the game never satisfyingly explains their motivations.

Another issue with the plot is the ending, which I can only very vaguely describe for the sake of keeping this review spoiler-free. It felt like Rockstar was trying to execute a sort of moral denouement in the final scenes of the game, exposing Niko's hamartia (flaw). Unfortunately, the ending was poorly executed because the game has a hard time deciding whether it wants to moralize, or just kill people. Ultimately, the ending simultaneously involves killing people, as well as a sort of "winners don't do drugs!" type message, which of course feels rather out of place for a GTA game. Perhaps the devs wanted something to fend off Jack Thompson with.

Finally, some issues with the gameplay. The world does indeed feel much more immersive than prior iterations of the series, yet it still gets painstakingly repetitive in the second half of the game. I really found doing the same hunt-and-kill missions over and over again to get tiresome. Again, it feels like the devs got lazy as the first half had some innovative missions, while the second half devolves into repetitive drive to location, win gunfight against two dozen men, shake cops structure. The second half missions absolutely fail to satisfactorily integrate the new elements of the game - for example, I had totally abandoned the "friendship" system as it became more of a nuisance to maintain high friendship levels, with little reward.

In conclusion, I'd like to again stress that GTA4 is a really good game, and I just thought I'd point out the flaws because I think I expected a really spectacular game given the unprecedented positive reception it was given by most critics. I think we're going to see GTA4 go the same route as GTA3 - where the first game sets up sandbox, so to speak, laying out the core game engine, with subsequent games building on top of that solid foundation and introduce some really nice gameplay elements. It feels like the devs didn't have quite enough time to polish GTA4 in terms of plot and gameplay, but that shouldn't be a problem for the sequels that are sure to be coming out in the next few years as there is a really excellent foundation to work with.

Grand Theft Auto 4 the most overrated game of all-time?

First off, i absolutely love GTA!! GTA is one of my favorite video game series'. I even pre-ordered GTA4 and picked it up the day it came out. Alright, now that that is out of the way; we can get to the meat and potatoes.

The Pro's:
-GTA 4 is a long game: Takes approximately 25-30 hrs. to beat. So you get your money's worth.
-The new cover system in GTA 4 is amazing. One of the best cover systems created to date. The aiming is also done very well.
-The graphics are very good.
-solid frame-rate throughout gameplay
-good GTA formula overall

The Con's:
-The story is crappy. It is not very entertaining and certainly not funny. When the game ended i was like, "finally." The stories in the other Grand Theft Auto's are so much better and much more memorable!! This GTA has nothing memorable about it, and the story is rather drab. GTA San Andreas was funny, intriguing and had memorable characters.
-The missions themselves are very drab and repetitive. There was not one mission that i thought was unique and interesting. In GTA San San Andreas you had one mission where you torched a marijuana field with a flamethrower, which was hilarious!! In GTA 4 you get nothing like this.
-most of the customization is gone. No working out, no customizing cars, and no jetpacks.
-GTA IV is GTA III on steroids. This means that Rockstar took GTA III and created a cover system, added new missions, an aiming system and multiplayer and called it GTA IV.
-GTA IV is a Saints Row rip-off. I never thought i would say that, because Saints Row was a GTA rip-off. However, GTA IV took what Saints Row brought to the next-gen and copied it. In my opinion Saints Row was a better game except for the cover-system. I predict that Saints Row II will be much better than GTA IV.
-I frankly was happy when GTA IV was over, because i was sick of it.

Now before you call me a hater on GTA IV, please note: that i am a GTA fan-boy. I consider GTA San Andreas to be one of the best games ever made!! I wanted to love GTA IV so much and i did for a while until i realized that i was playing GTA III again. Is GTA IV a good game? Yes, it is. Is it a perfect 10 and the best game made in the past ten years? No way!!

To summarize:
GTA IV is a slight step-forward and a major step backwards!! Rockstar, in making GTA IV concentrated way to much on making it next-gen, when they should have focused more on making another classic GTA!! This GTA is a carbon copy of Saints Row!! Rockstar stole what Saints Row did and copied it!!

Glad I rented!!!

This game isn't really what I expected. It's a good game, don't get me wrong but I was expecting to be addicted for at least a month just playing this game exclusively. I'm not sure if I'm going to finish playing it. I get bored playing after just an hour. The graphics aren't really that good. Everything seems dull. The cars are really difficult to turn even at a moderate speed. If you barely tap the handbrake the cars will just spin out of control. The camera seems to have a mind of its own. If the game gets updated and fixes some of these problems then I might enjoy it more. I just have very little patience and when I'm just trying to drive around and my car flips over from hitting a curb driving slow then I get very irritated. I like Saints Row a lot more and when Saints Row 2 comes out this game will be long forgotten for me.

Guess I didn't drink the GTA Kool-Aid

If you didn't like previous GTA games, this one is probably not going to do much to change your mind, so pay no attention to the hype. It's basically like the others.. unrealistic driving controls, sloppy combat controls, shoddy camera angles, cheesy dialog, lots of profanity, etc. Added to this game is a much improved cover system that still pales in comparison to Gears of War or Rainbow Six (or so I'm told.. I didn't make it that far), and a story that reaks of a second-class gangster flick.

Note that I played this game for about 4 hours, which was about all I could stand. People say that the game becomes fun eventually, but I play video games for entertainment and having to play one for 5+ hours in the hopes that I might enjoy myself eventually is just too much work for me. Then again, I'm a casual gamer and would rather play $10 XBLA titles than an 'epic' game like this. I only became interested in GTA4 when people started talking about it like it was the second coming. But honestly, there's nothing new to see here. That being said, if you loved the previous entries in the series and want more of the same, you'll probably love this game too. Just don't go in expecting anything revolutionary. It's amazing what passes for innovative these days.

Finally a GTA that I might finish.

It's been 4 years since the last GTA game was out, which was GTA San Andreas. I have never been a huge fan of the GTA series. I did like San Andreas but I never did finish it or ever get super deep into it. I barely played Vice City or GTA 3 even though I owned both and was very excited to play them. Now the series has made into the current, formerly known as next, gen and boy is this what the GTA series needed.

I could always tell that GTA series was a great series, but it was very limited by the hardware of that generation (PS2 and XBOX), but with this iteration of GTA, it seems like all those great ideas are finally coming together in a package that is truly an experience.

I won't bore you with the details or story and it's character, Niko, since those have been gone over again and again. What I will tell you are my impressions of this stellar game.

As exaggerated a statement as this may seem, Liberty City does have a living, breathing feel to it. People live there lives in this city. It doesn't feel like Niko's world. In one of my first interesting experiences in the game, I was walking to meet my cousin Roman at his job, and while I was walking a car accident happened which started a fight between 2 women. One of the women ran right by me scared out of her mind, while the other just chased her screaming obscenities. In another instance I was sitting in a car just listening to the radio( I was in a slow jams mood, aka Jodeci) and all of a sudden a cop car stops right next to me. I didn't know what to think. As I was a about to speed off I heard "Freeze!" I was confused at first and then as I looked around I saw a man with his hands in the air being escorted into the police car next to me. That's just some sweet attention to detail that can leave you in awe at times.

The attention to detail in this game is spectacular with tv stations that can be watched (set aside some time to watch tv in this game. You just might lose an hour or more on that), radio stations with actual DJ's and licensed music (A GTA staple and realistic touch. Song choice is great but the songs can get repetitive), and the good ol internet.

The internet is a nice touch since you try and can set up dates via an online dating service (which doesn't seem to be useful seem I was rejected by all 3 women I asked out on dates.) or just read up on news stories around Liberty City and check out blogs.

The graphics are a sight to see. The animation system in this game is really something that needs to be seen. In one instance I stole someones car and as I got in the car, the person who I stole the car from grabbed the door handle trying to re-enter his car. Needless to say I decided to drive off before he had a chance to get back in, but the guy held onto the door handle banging against the side of the car as I sped off. After a few swivels he let go, ragdolling into a ball of broken man. Wow. The game runs reasonably smooth, with a few hiccups here and there and the scenery is great.

The fighting system is a much improved version of the old GTA system. You can still lock on to enemies(which by default locks on to the body), but now you can move the cursor up, down and to the side while locked on. This helps when trying to take down a single enemy with a head shot. You can also free aim which is conventional shooter style. This is done by gently pressing the Left trigger rather than pressing it completely which goes into lock on mode. The melee system is fun, though not very deep. There is not much variety to the kicks and punches, that I have seen as of yet, but when it's a street fight I'm not expecting MMA style grapples or anything, so it serves its purpose. The Blind fire system is also a nice new addition to the GTA series. RB is the button to enter cover. In cover, you can pop out and shoot enemies that are locked on to with the Right Trigger or you can blind fire by Pressing Right Trigger when behind cover. I haven't used the cover feature too much, but I do appreciate that it's there.

The voice work done for this game, as you would expect, is top notch. Rockstar always comes through with solid voice acting and writing for the GTA series and this game is no exception. The accents are fantastic, especially the barely distinguishable Little Jacob. The humor is what you would expect from the GTA series, raunchy and full of 4 letter words. This is definitely a M-Rated game.

The writing also seems to be some of the best Rockstar has done to date. This game is trying to show the demons that the main character Niko is dealing with and this can be seen and heard in the dialogue amongst the characters which happens via cell phone conversations, cutscenes or "hang out time" with certain characters.

The cell phone is also a big addition to the GTA series. It not only helps Niko manage his relationships amongst all of his associates, lady friends(hehe) and cousin Roman, but it also helps him get jobs from his his associates/cousin or set up times to hang out with these people. It's funny to get calls from Roman in the middle of an explosives delivery. Good times.

All in all I could go on and on about how great this game is and about all the things that can be done and seen in this game, but it's really something you have to try out and experience for yourself. This is definitely the best game in the GTA series. Give it a shot. I'm sure you won't be disappointed.
