A True Racing Game

5 Rating: 5, Useful: 2 / 3

I will have to echo McAllister's comments. MotoGP '06 is the best racing game I have ever played and I have played quite a few. It is as close to realism as it can get. The most impressive aspect of this game is not only the graphics but the game's ability to replicate the feel of a Racing Bike on a track with the exception of the occasional bug in your visor. If you are a couch potatoe who has never raced a bike then do not purchase this game; if you are an avid motorcyclist then you MUST buy this game.

I've been riding motorcycles for the better part of 15 years. So I think i know a thing or two about realism, as far as video games go. This game does an amazing job of creating the feel of acceleration and braking through a turn. Who cares that you can't see your logos. This game was created for those of us who are actually motorcycle enthusiasts. Not for some 220 pound couch potatoe who does nothing but play video games that you "can't customize more than one bike" at a time. To THQ and Microsoft, SWEET FRIGGIN GAME. And to you lifeless pricks, GET A LIFE.

Simulation NOT arcade.

If you're looking for an arcade style racer, look somewhere else. This game has a very big learning curve. Unless you've played previous MotoGp games, dont plan on picking this one up and being good at it the first time you play it. You'll have to put in a few hours before you really get the hang of it. But once you do get it down, its one of the BEST racing sims out there. The sense of speed and graphics are both amazing. This is also one of the best games on xbox live.

People need to know this game is not for everybody. Its not one of those racing games that you can get out on the track and just floor it the whole way through.

Great Riding Simulator

Some games are meant to be arcadey, while others are meant to give a real world experience even if it's tough to master. MotoGP falls squarely in the second area. Be prepared for some realistic motorcycle riding in this racing game.

The game provides three modes - a quick race for the patience challenged, time trials for fast challenges, and then the career mode. All tracks in the game are based on actual MotoGP tracks, and there are a good number of bikes to choose from. You get to customize the bikes as you go, with numerous tweaks and decorative touches to add.

The bikes are, of course, the entire point of a motorcycle racing game. The detail and work they put into each bike is VERY impressive. You can really see the gleam on the paint curves and the worn creases of the leather. The tracks show an equal amount of work. For as many minute components that make up each large track, there are numerous small touches that you can see if you tool around at slow speed.

The game's training program helps you learn the basics - but even this area isn't "easy". To do the curves properly, you have to handle both the bike's steering and the rider's balance, just as in real life. My boyfriend and I have done a fair amount of long distance riding, so this sort of thing becomes second nature in real life. The game is helping you learn these same skills.

On to the actual racing. You can choose from the 2005 or 2006 season if you wish. You can do practice runs on a track before you qualify, which is really nice to help you learn it. The arrows which come up are both helpful and inobtrusive. If you bump another rider, they make an angry hand gesture at you, while you wave bye-bye to them. Having the widescreen really helps see the course ahead and the riders you need to pass.

There are a number of flaws in the game. The loading screens take quite a long period of time to finish. There are occasional stutters in the game - not enough to cause trouble while playing, but it's noticeable. I wasn't overly fond of the music choices. In general, though, when you're zooming around the track at super high speed, focussing on getting that #1 spot on a hard difficulty, the things around you are a blur and all that matters is the quality of your bike. They really have done a great job with that.

I really have to question just how some of the other reviewers were spotting "no cameraman at the camera" unless they were riding at 5mph, which isn't the point of playing a racing game ... that would be like judging Super Mario poorly because the mushrooms were not properly textured ...

This one clocks in very well

Xbox 360 owners have gone through dry spells that rival those of the Sahara Desert. New games come out as frequently as intelligent statements out of George W. Bush. I've found myself testing the waters of all sorts of games and I never thought I'd leave the anchor resting for so long when I picked up THQ and Climax's Moto GP '06. What is essentially the Xbox 360's first simulation racer is also one of the top overall racing titles. Moto GP '06 offers some of the best thrills and deadliest spills of any racer out there.

Before I dive too deeply into telling you all about the great things concerning Moto GP '06, one must be aware: this is not an easy game to pick up and play. THQ and Climax have created a game that is punishing to newbies of the motorcycle racing scene. The feel of riding a motorcycle in this game, though extremely realistic, is also quite difficult at first. One must learn the intricacies of riding a motorcycle before it is possible to truly appreciate the realism found in this game. For example, turning properly is something that simply must be mastered. Learning where the perfect line for each turn is the key and figuring out the right time to let off the gas and apply the front and rear brakes is only the first step. To truly pull off a great turn, one has to know when to kick back into acceleration and power out.

The bulk of time spent playing Moto GP '06 will surely be devoted to the Career Mode, where it is possible to participate in one of four different circuits. The first, Grand Prix, is the only one that is initially available. I found it to be the least fun, the most difficult, and longest to get through. Each Grand Prix course takes place on one of many different tracks located throughout the world, such as Laguna Seca. Once that circuit is complete, gamers are treated to Moto GP '06's true gold, the Extreme circuits. These three circuits test your racing skills to the...well, extreme. You'll race through more exotic and attractive locations throughout the bright city streets of Tokyo, and across Tuscany, where the only thing crazier than the sense of speed are the turns found at the bottom of steep mountain hills.

Each race is a pretty exciting string of events. To prepare, you can scope out a course's difficult spots by completing challenges and qualifying for pole position. I think it's safe to say I've never played a game where qualifying was so necessary, because the action on the track becomes brutal once the race actually starts. Though the AI isn't as brilliant as I had hoped, it requires you to stay on pace and up to speed. Like I said before, part of the trick is learning how to turn properly.

Without a doubt, one of the biggest perks of playing through the Career Mode is the level of customization one is given. At the start, you'll customize everything from your rider's helmet style to a creative logo to use in online racing modes. Then you can use prize money to purchase new bikes and parts. On top of all of this, you can customize your rider's base skills by earning experience points after completing the challenges on each course, and of course, winning races.

Unfortunately, there aren't a lot of special modes outside of the Career Mode. There is a multi-player mode for racing fans as well as an Xbox Live setup, but for players going solo, there are really only Career races. That's not to say there aren't a ton of those. In fact, I'd say there are almost 70 races to go through, but once that's done, you've played through the full Moto GP '06 experience.

Visually, Moto GP '06 is a top-tier title on the Xbox 360. It has some of the prettiest backdrops I've ever seen, with detail simply overflowing from every single location. From the sand kicking up when you botch a turn to the reflections off of buildings in Barcelona, there are plenty of sights to see here. One of my favorite effects is the slight camera panning when one pulls off a high-speed turn, resulting in a feeling that simulates the G-force of pulling off such a turn. Of course, the sound of the game is nice as well. The ear-splitting engine sound effects and screeching tires are as well-done as any racing game and the soundtrack isn't half bad either.

Overall, Moto GP '06 isn't a game I'd recommend for everyone. Despite its excellence in so many areas, it just isn't going to be everyone's cup of tea. The steep learning curve is the first obstacle and the second is the lack of gameplay modes. Still, for racing fans and for anyone who liked previous Moto GP entries, this should be one of your next Xbox 360 purchases. The beautiful graphics, the realistic feeling of the controls and the thrilling courses should be enough to keep you playing for quite a while.

You don't have to be a motorcycle enthusiest to pick this game up and have fun. In fact, you pretty much just need to know that motorcycles have 2 wheels and can drive really, really fast. A lot of people have been complaining that this game is too tough, but I haven't figured out why. I don't have any difficulty keeping the bike on course (only took me one full lap at race speed to figure each track out) and the AI is generally slow even on champion level. I haven't unlocked legend yet, but I'm hoping it gives me some competition considering I won each and every race I've run so far.

Although, for the casual gamer the experience may be frustrating. If you've never played a racing sim before you may have some difficulty training your brain to tell your fingers to slow the bike down way before you want to in order to make corners correctly.

The tracks look amazing, the crowds are lifelike, and the graphics are just stunning. The music sucks though so I reccomend turning on your dashboard's playlist.

As much as I love this game, I only gave it 4 stars because of the fact that my copy seems to crash my 360 quite a bit. I've emailed THQ and they haven't given me any kind of good advice yet. However, I won't let that stop me from playing the game because overall it's the best out on the 360 so far.

This game is pretty fun, although it is extremely difficult. The graphics are nice, and there is a large variety of courses and racers. Being one of the few 4 player racing games currently out for the xbox 360 makes this a great game for playing with friends. I definitely recommend this game, especially if you're a racing fan.
