Tony Hawk Pro Skater 4 is a very fun and interesting game. But THPS4 lacked the magic THPS3 THPS2 and THPS put out in it's game play. First level (which is college) is very easy compared to the next 8 levels ahead. you may get a bit confused as a guy runs up to you at the start and tells you that you have to talk to people to get goals. Talk to people!? Okay... As the level progresses, you will notice as you veiw your goals, that some goals will be locked. Wow. You need to even find the people that give you goals (which may take a while) There are TONS of new tricks and fun things to do in THPS4, such as spine transforing, flat level ticks while manualing and a while lot of new and improved specials. My fav. is the one called.... awww yeah. I'd reccomend renting THPS4 before buying it.
It's one of those games where you either love it...... or hate it.
Well. . . cheerio.

This game is Awesome

Tony Hawk 4 is the best PS2 game I've ever played. It's about a million times better than Tony Hawk 3 and Tony hawk 2. I've had this game for 2 years and I just can't stop playing it. Even though there's Tony Hawk Underground, Tony Hawk Underground 2, and American Wasteland, I haven't bought them I know they can't beat this game.

Graphics: I know everyone says the graphics could be better, I still think they're great, especially for a game made that long ago. I probably think this because alomst all of my 52 PS2 games were made at least a year ago. These graphics are better thanthose in sly 3 and thats a brand new game.

Multiplayer: Good enough. Horse is fun and playing online is too. King of the hill is my favorite and trick attack is good also.

Cheats: If you type in watch_me_xplode at the beginning it will give you all of the cheats, levels, and skaters. Most of the cheats stink but Perfect rail, manual, and skitch, cool specials, hoverboard, flame, and stats 13 are really useful. I beat the game the first time without cheats and then I beat again with cheats, the first time took me a month. I think I beat it the second time in 2 days.

Levels:

Colledge: a fun and easy level with lots of vert and street stuff
San Fransisco: Bleh. I don't like this level because it has way too many open spaces and street stuff.
Alcatraz: My favorite level, cool challenges, high rails, it's a vert level
Kona: Better than San Francisco, very street, hard challenges, an ok level.
Shipyard: ohhh this level is so bad it hurts to play it. impossible challenges and way too much water.
London: a good mix of street and vert, pretty easy.
Zoo: I love zoo. My 2nd favorite level. fun challenges, another great mix of street and vert

The levels you have to buy

Carnival: Some fun challenges, otherwise a lot like shipyard
Chicago: this level is so hard you cant even do it with cheats. Otherwise pretty fun.

Characters: Most of them are pretty good. Unlock Jango Fett and they'll all seem like toddlers that are desperatly trying to skateboard. Created players are fun to use because you can give them any tricks you want. Even Jango Fett's. Even though Tony Hawk is the best skater you can use (without cheats) his pro challenge at the end of the game is pretty hard, just a warning. Jamie Thomas's pro challenge is so easy a 2 year old could do it, no offence to those of you who are stuck on it. There are different names for created characters that will do different things to them. One of these names is kraken, try it out.

Create-a-park: So fun, so addicting. I spent all of today building parks. If you are going to play against your friend, you can make the park so you have the advantage. Better than playing at a normal park, especially shipyard.

If you want to buy this game, I encourage you to because it is truly a great game

THPS 1-3 are awesome. All 5 star games. Why in the world did they go and change the gameplay for 4? Each of the previous titles got better and better until this one.

The missions are lame. In the previous versions I actually felt like I accomplished something when I finished a level goal. The missions in 4 are not interesting and some are just downright stupid. Each mission takes about two minutes to complete and is more annoying to perform than fun. At least running through the Mall in THPS 1 (or any level in the previous versions) trying to complete all level goals in one shot was exciting. THPS 4 offers none of this.

And the levels have boundaries that aren't clearly marked. Like San Francisico - you just skate toward open road and suddenly you're out of the level. That's just ridiculous.

Personally, I like rap so the music for me is awesome, but that's not a reason to buy or keep the game.

I played for about 3 hours, now I'm selling it. What a waste of time. Fortunately, I didn't really waste any money (thanks eBay).

Go back to the old format already...

Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 4

With Tony Hawk's 4th game, Neversoft realized that enough people have been playing thier games to take the difficulty a step up. Thats definately what they did, this game is much harder than THPS3, it was obvious Neversoft did not take the extra time to make sure this game was newcomer-friendly. Other than that, the game was quite good.

I want to start off by saying I think that the soundtrack in THPS4 is pretty bad, the problem is that it does not have a lot of punk rock, which is, in my opinion, true skating music, I really don't like rap, and I think skating rap really don't mix. It seemed that after the first game, the music got really bad. I still think that the first had the best music, it featured some music from some really great skater-punk bands, and had no rap.

Soundtrack aside, the graphics are pretty good. They are a little different than THPS3, not much improvement, but they are better, the skater animations have a bit of a noticable change, there are some new animations for landing tricks. Depending on what the trick was and how well you landed, there will be a different animation. The tricks all look smoother too, grind balancing looks more realistic as does spining, and flip tricks look more natural.

The biggest refinement would be in the career mode, which has been improved a lot. The two minute timer is gone, and goals are now done by traveling around to different people in the level. They will ask you to do specific goals which will usually have thier own time limit. Some of the same goals from the last game are here too, like high scores and collecting S-K-A-T-E. The rest of the goals are much harder for the most part, I often found myself have to retry a goal over 15 times. But the goals are usually really fun, so it won't get too frustrating. The control scheme is a bit different as well. At the core it is the same, but new tricks have been added. In THPS3, pressing the flip button twice or three times while doing a kickflip, heelflip, or shuv-it would multiply it by 2 or 3. This time, that is also effective with Hardflips, Varial flips, and inward heelflips. This can also work with grabs, giving you many more grab tricks, which makes for many more trick variations.

So all in all, another solid addition to the already great series. Would I reccomend this game to newcomers of the series? No. This game is stictly for the veterans, as it's goals are much harder and almost demand prior knowledge of how the game plays. Newcomers, you should go with THPS3, that is the best game all around in the series so far, its goals are more simple, and it offers a tutorial. But long-time fans of the series should definately pick this one up, it will keep you satisfied and you should be welcome to the challenge.

First off I would like to say, I really enjoy the Tony Hawk series. THPS 3, is my favorite of the first three games and I would like to give this game 4 1/2 stars. This title does take an enormous step in it's career mode, following Aggressive Inline, by eliminating the clock until you start a challenge which is done by talking to people with arrows over their heads. The reason that I didn't give this 5 stars lies in the actual challenges of the game. There are 190 in all and after you have gotten 90, harder challenges and insanely difficult Specific Pro Challenges are unlocked. Obviously these are supposed to be hard so I can't really lower a score for that but some of the challenges aren't really connected to skateboarding in the way that previous games were and when those are really challenging, I got aggrevated. For example there are numerous racing tasks, including a luge (which is easy) but on all of these you can't run into anything or you fall and when that happened you need to retry. I completely beat Tony Hawk 3 with every single person, unlocking all the game had to offer. This game almost has me stuck at almost 60% of the way done. I like games that are challenging so I get my money's worth but I think this is extreme. I'm sure many people will beat it and if you truely are a Tony expert maybe you will but after seeing how easy Tony 3 was and how easy the first few levels of this game is I was expecting to beat this in under a week but that is not going to happen. Now back to the good side, if you have the network adaptor then you will have a great time online with this. This is almost enough of a reason to buy this game. With many modes including capture the flag, goal attack (which is a competition to finish career mode goals before the other players) and many more, this is a reason to get the network adaptor. Overall, this game is really fun and the new career freedom is great, along with the superbly done online play. If you are new to this series this will be difficult but otherwise you'll be able to do okay, although frustration will most likely occur along the way. All in all, everyone needs to pick this up.

another big seller this Xmas

Activision dishes up more of the trillion-selling skateboard action that we have all grown to love over the last few years. And while this game has excellent controls, smooth motion, new twists in career mode, and huge levels to roam around, I wonder if this series might be running out of steam. Too much of a good thing? Perhaps.

Where do I start? Well, there are some new things to be aware of with TH4. You can do spine transfers (and there are a ton of spine ramps on this game) instead of just "airing out" over a ramp. You can also hook up behind a car (called skitching or skiching???) and cruise down the street until you lose control and get tossed to the pavement. Not quite sure how this adds to the overall play experience but it is something new. Some of the missions on career mode require you to do this.

Everything else is basically the same, obviously there are new boards (college, San Fransisco, Alcatraz, a Carnival, Zoo, London, Chicago, think thats all of them), new decks, clothes, music etc.

My main gripe deals with the realism (or lack thereof) of the latest Hawk titles (number 3 I'm talking about you too). The levels are pleasing to the eye, but there is just something silly about skating through a zoo or grinding a roller coaster track 25 feet in the air. I know it is a video game but some realism would be nice...even the "special" tricks are cheesy. I was playing Koston and busted a grind, and he started throwing fireworks as he skated...Muska will spray paint the ledge as he grinds. Like I said, silly. The ghetto blaster was the tip of the iceberg I guess.

Anyway, if you like any of the other titles in the Hawk series, then you'll like this one. I suggest buying it now b/c the closer it gets to Xmas you won't be able to find one on the shelf.

Yet a another great game!!

This game is amsome. It is alot diffent then the thrid version. Instead of types this version you just skate around and go up to people and they tell you what to do. This game is very fun. When i first got it i couldn't stop playing it. Now i don't play it as much because i got grand theft auto vice. Which is another great game. Hawk 4 is also, very hard. There are 190 things to do and they are hard. I got the game 2 days after it came out i been playing it since and i am only finished 57 out of 190. It's hard but fun. Also, you can skicth on cars which is very cool. In one level you have to get a millon points and you have to get a combo of 500,000 points! Also, you have to get skate and combo. The combo is very hard to get. I would get this game even if you don't like skateboarding it's so fun.

I couldn't believe it until I saw it. The THPS series had managed to add new stuff to an already overloaded series as it was. This is a major improvement over 3, despite the fact that all THPS games are great. I found that the first 3 games were insanely easy, but this one, barring the first 3 areas(college, San Fransisco, and Alcatraz) was at least mildly difficult. And once you got 90 Pro Points after completing tasks, you got to do pro challenges, possible the hardest objectives one could concieve(with one or two exceptions like the Chad Muska objective, etc.) Then, after beating your first Pro Challenge, you get to really put your skills to the test with the red objectives. These things can get insanely difficult, but all objectives are rewarding as the give you cash as you work your way to new skateboards, secret skaters, and secret locations. It was also a good thing that they took away the option to buy special tricks, as I always found that to be somewhat annoying as you wasted money on a trick, then it turns out to be a total dissapointment. You also no longer have to buy stats, as some objectives reward them to you. The usual options are great, and they added a multiplayer free skate along with the other usual goodies. This also has to be the greatest soundtrack ever to grace a videogame, even beating out Midnight Club 2. Simply put: buy this game, or at least rent it. You wont regret it.

The best THPS yet

What can I say, but Tony, you did it again. I have been a fan of the thps series since it first came out, and I have also not only conquered, but smashed and bashed each game. This Thps is by far the best, hardest, largest, fastest and coolest one of them all. There are I believe 9 levels where you can skate to your hearts content, and you get hooked on the gameplay very easily. Overall, there are 190 goals for you to do, some of them ranging from simple combo lines to massive score trick attacks. And while the single player mode is fun, you really dont experience the true value of this game until you get online. With the ability to chat and face up to 8 people at a single time, the fun never stops. A warning to all people who have not been online yet, if you think you're good, think again. While it may seem like a big thing to land a million point combo, it's nothing compared to the online world. People have hit over 2 billion points online in this game *coughkyasjoncough* And from personal experience, let me tell you, these lines take hours and hours of dedicated practice to master. This game is really worth it all the way through, from the C-A-S, to the online play,. I give it a full 5 stars.
