Pretty, but sadly not Gran Tourismo

Well we had very high hopes when this arrived, and it does indeed look fine. Very fine in fact. But...

Thing is, looks aren't everything, and when it comes to driving feel it all goes South very quickly.

Slam on the brakes when you're in the middle of a tight turn and you'll loose control and spin the car, right? Wrong. You'll just merrily slow down and keep turning. You can't cause the backend to come loose and slide sideways at all. Ever. No matter what you do (yes, I tried everything).

Side off a corner into gravel and you'll lose control, right? Wrong. You'll just keep on turning round that corner; maybe a bit less tight, and a few miles and hour slower, but that's the worst that will happen to you. All the non-road edge surfaces work like tarmac, just slow you down a bit.

If you're looking for driving realism this game is not the one for you. Not at all. You should definitely check out "Ferrari 355". Now that's *really* like driving! You should even go back to Gran Tourismo on the PSX. Don't come here.

If you're after very pretty, very fast arcade style racing then this is a fine choice and I'm sure you'll enjoy it plenty.

pretty images, poor realism

The graphics in the game are nice. I think the visual models of the cars are not bad, although some of them reflect poorly and look like they are made out of clay rather then coated in high-gloss paint. My real beef with this game is the handling of the cars. When I first started racing the game, the 600cc car I drove felt like a marshmello, and I was excited, thinking that as I worked my way up through the cars, I'd get better and better handling. But, after playing several cars, and racing ones that I'm familiar with in real life, I found that they were ALL modeled after a marshmello. The handling is just awful, both with the hand controller or a steering wheel. Sure, it is challenging to herd the cars around the detailed tracks, but I was hoping to actually feel like I was driving. It is impossible to spin a car, even a 500hp car in 1st gear in sand! Every aspect of driving is missing refinement and realism.. The only reasonably modeled driving games I've seen yet for Dreamcast are Monaco GP and Revolt. This game was fun for a couple hours, but now it goes into the stack of rarely used games along with other dissapointments like F1 GP.. Had I known about the poor simulation, I would have waited and picked up a used copy rather then pay full price.

TWO WORDS FOR THIS GAME................

INSTANT CLASSIC! Sega did it right again. The game is just amazing. The screenshots on the net don't even do the game justice. For the first hour of playing the game, I found myself running into the walls, because I was too busy picking my jaw off the floor. If their is a downside it might be that there is just over 100 cars in the game, not comparing it to Gran Turismo with 300+. But the game is AWESOME! ...

WORTH EVERY LAST PENNY!

I've played Gran Turismo...this is no Gran Turismo.

On its own merits, this is a great game. It's the second game I bought for Dreamcast. My main problem is that I can't help comparing it to Gran Turismo 1 and 2 for PSX. If it weren't for that, I'd be in heaven...but I don't find the "driving experience" in GT as enjoyable or realistic (as if I've ever taken a hair-pin turn at 120 mph). The cars feel like they're "floating" and it is extremely difficult to push the rear end out on tight turns. To be fair, I don't have a driving wheel for GT (yet) and I don't have anywhere near the hours of practice (yet). Don't get me wrong...it's a great game...but Gran Turismo is still KING in my book.

SEGA GT IS MUCH BETTER THAN GT2

I admit when I first played this game with my friend the night i bought it I thought to myself, "Why in the world did I buy this game?" Now I haven't had the luxury to play Gran Turismo, but I have played many racers before and I can say now this is by far my favorite. If you can get over the steep learning curve (the controls are hard to get used to) and spend some time in championship mode you will find this game hard to put down. Whether you're racing a Acura NSX you spent $140,000 to [prep] or racing a car you made from the very cool "Carrozeria" you will love this game. The reason this game gets 4 stars instead of five is because it's two-player racing is only about as half as much fun as Championship mode and the track selection is really really small.

a good racing game

This game is the best console racing game ever. The graphics are simply amazing! You can build original cars from from scratch--over 20 million combinations are possible! There are 130 perfectly rendered GT sports cars, 22 tracks and over 20 special event races. The only downside to this game is that the control is a little bit hard to get used to. If you loved any of the Gran Turismo's you'll love Sega GT! BUY IT NOW!
