Chilling...

From reading reviews from some of the creator's, FEAR was going to be a horror/FPS game, but not just a horror game where you wait to jump out of your seat with hidden monsters and demons in closets, no...They wanted to give it a a chilling story about a girl that follows you around the game as you neutralize a threat that wiped out team instantly after a mysterious wave commences. The First Encounter Assault Recon Team (F.E.A.R.) is sent in. With the cool button to switch from a slow-motion combat back to normal, you fight through soldiers and other teams. That's not it though, along with the FPS perspective, this little girl pops up every now and then and whispers to you (another being follows too as he knew about her story) and you fall into illusions where you are taken through chilling slow-motion sequences where, little-by-little, you find out more about what happened to this girl...Make sure she doesn't touch you though as it will kill you. With the realistic and stunning visual effects and graphics, FEAR is a MUST if you want to experience intense action, chilling and suspenseful sequences, and extraordinary graphics. I give it five stars.

Great game, but falls short of overall bar.

Is F.E.A.R. 2005's Half-Life 2 killer? No. But it comes darn close.
First off, the graphics are astounding. This game is the reason why hardcore PC gamers are snuffing the next-gen offerings, so far. Everything in the game is exquisitely detailed with great depth and variety in textures. The lighing engine is equally as impressive. The play between light and shadow really adds to the overall spooky motif of the game and the dynamic reflection properties are just beautiful. The particle engine is just great, if not too demanding for most current video cards. In an intense firefight, all of the smoke and sparks can create some pretty severe slowdown.
The physics engine is also pretty fun. Rag-doll physics are fairly standard these days, so that's nothing new, but I rather enjoyed shooting the wall just to watch pieces of brick and plaster explode out.
My only complaint about the graphics is that the game suffers from Doom 3's lack of level variety. It's all just hallway followed by open space with swarming enemies.
HOWEVER, those "swarming enemies" have great A.I. and will use the environment to their advantage, along with utilizing some pretty great dynamic strategies.

The story is good enough, but it's no Half-Life. It also lacks boss fights, which some people may love, I guess, but the satisfaction of beating down something 50 times the size of your character is always so great . . .

One word of caution: Get ready to have you P.C. dragged around by it's feet with this game. A 3.4 GHZ P4, 1024MB DDR2 RAM, and two 6800 Ultras in SLi get you 55FPS and the same thing with a Radeon x800 barely reaches 25FPS. AGP card users should probably just avoid the game. Same with those who have 6200s/x600s and below. Those will probably barely manage the low settings . . .

So, great game, but fond memories of Half-Life 2 keep it from getting a "5". By the way, pick up HL2 when you add this to your cart! That is, if you don't already own it . . .

Awsome game!

After beating Farcry, Half Life 2, and many others I have several games to compare this to. I think this is definately up with Farcry and Half Life 2. I would give it a 90 or above as PC Gamer did. As a game designer I noticed some rather bland texturing and modeling but the gameplay is so awsome you don't hardly even notice. The AI is smart in this game, the slo mo is awsome and it is definately creepy. Awsome sound effects and paranormal events keep you on the edge of your seat. Just as you think you are used to the paranormal stuff something new happens to freak you out. I haven't been this addicted to a game in a long time. Get it is all I have to say!

I like many others use far Cry and HL2 as standards of evaluations for games, and I am very impressed! I think the squad tactics are first rate as the ferocious firefights that you encounter. What makes it more realistic is the variety of ways you have to defeat the squads during any firefight, with it's expansive buildings and corridors to use as cover and concealment.
I also enjoy the adult themed commands that the mercs use which adds to the sense of realism, along with the dialog that the squads use to annotate wounded and calling for reinforcements.

The horror themed background adds a nice touch and isn't overdone, you still get alot of kill time (which is why you're playing it)

Top notch graphics and shadows, and the ease of loading with the dvd version round out a great game which hasn't had a glitch... or equal by my comparison.

When is the next one due?

Good horror shooter.

I look through these reviews and people really seem to miss the point. This game was developed for a sense or realism, not so that you could explore some new scenery or get some sort of odd adventurism. I hate to tell people, but when it comes to urban combat, you are looking at office buildings, factories, labs, and generally, the same scenery over and over again. The hallmarks of this game are in the way it plays. When you are up against an enemy squad of four (four grunts) or five (four grunts and a heavy armor) you feel like you are up against something in the range of ten or fifteen. Rather than do what the A.I. does in HL2 (which I loved) or any other game I've ever played, they don't just come flying through some bottlneck to get thier heads blown off in turn. One guy pushes you from your cover with a grenade, another keeps you pinned down, one advances on your front, and another is coming around trying to flank you. If you are lucky enough to be up against a heavy, he just comes after you, and I hope you have a good weapon, lots of ammo, and many medkits. Situational awareness takes on a whole new meaning.

I do believe that the supernatural aspect to the game was truly horrifying, it just fit all too well. It wasn't over the top, but it was there enough to freak you out. The bland scenery is, well, what there is out there in real life, and you wouldn't be all that scared if it was truly that unique. The idea was to put you in a place you felt like you HAVE been in before, be it an office building, an old apartment building, city streets or allyways, etc. The point was to freak you out in an environment where you are supposed to feel comfortable.

I loved this game, the story is good, because it really does keep you going rite up to the end, and the A.I. really just keeps you on your feet. You can't play like a bulldozer in this game, and just run on through, which is what I loved the most. And really, in the end, the graphics are truly amazing, bland scenery and all. Look at the heat effects, the weapons effects, how enemies react to taking a hit, how objects react to taking a hit. Everything just worked great.

My recomondation is to play this game for what it is, a slightly slower paced, tactical, keep you at the edge of your chair, thinking person's shooter. Learn to conserve your ammo, use the appropriate weapons, and to manage health and armor.

In the end, good luck, you're going to need it. That's the best part.

Oh god no, not more crates!!!

First things first, whoever said this game scared them must be a real wimp, because I can assure you this game is not scary in the slightest.

You know something? It must be because I've spent much of my life playing computer games that little wows me any more. Doom, Tekken and Far Cry were the last games to make my jaw drop, and I guess not much has improved since then.

Yeah, we all know the game is a rip-off of the Ring and and a lot has been made of it's scare value. Like I said at the beginning, the game doesn't SCARE me one bit - the graphics are too cartoon-like for a start. How can a cartoon scare you? Does Scooby-Doo scare you?

In fact, I think the graphics are mediocre, pretty lifeless actually - tell me, why does every game have CRATES in them?!!! Is it because they are easily modelled? I'm getting bored with seeing crates time after time... all they do is block your way, anyway. Yeah, you guessed, the game IS on rails, and yes, you do everything alone (SURPRISE!) and yes, there's no freedom of exploration - don't panic about being left to your own devices, it's all scripted.

Sound's fine.. I have a 7.1 surround sound set-up, and it's certainly not being pushed to the max, for sure. Pretty bog-standard FX to be honest.

AI: The AI's OK I suppose, not quite as impressive as I thought it was going to be. Troops move in groups, take cover, run away. What's so special about that??? I'll be honest with you, the fights are all conducted in tight spaces, you've seen it all before - I must admit to stifling a yawn during the fight sequences.

I think you're getting the point.

Trust me, FEAR has nothing new on any other FPS that exists, apart from super-soaraway rag-doll animation that is only for aesthetic reasons and nothing else.

If you've bought Quake 4, don't buy this, and vice versa.

Great Game, so u need a good videocard

This is a fantastic game. To the people who are saying all this negetive stuff about it because they have a bad video card, come on, man-up, if your a computer gamer you should know what you need. Espicially to the guy who said he could play BF2 on high res, and not on FEAR. High res barely means anything, its what graphic settings really matter. And of course you cant have it on high with FEAR, Fear is far superior to BF2 graphically. You need at least a 6600gt to run it smoothly.

Good game but not worth 50 dollars

I haven't finished this game yet but let me offer a short review on what I have seen so far:

Graphics: Everyone is raving about the graphics. In my opinion they are average. HL2 which came out so long ago still bests this game in the graphics department. FEAR attempts to use a similar Ragdoll physics engine as HL2 but fails. Many enemies I killed in FEAR ended up stuck on invisible objects and magicaly hung in air.

Gameplay: Although I am no where near done with the game let me say this about the gameplay. Yes it is freaky I love the scary parts. But the rest of the game seems as though it is just a filler between the scary parts. The script must have read: 'Scary part, some kind of gun fight, scary part, gun fight, gun fight, gun fight, end level,' because that is how it plays. It is very repetative.

Combat: I don't see what everyone is raving about. The AI is smart, yes, but not anything I havent seen before. Almost reminds me of the marines in HL1. It is very easy to sneak up on them, and they will still run straight at you making it easy for you to kill them. Plus they will do some kind of funky dance when you shoot them. I have seen the do a combo of crouch/jump/lean at the same time (it looked very funny but not very realistic). They seem to take round after round while bouncing around, and when you stop firing they run off and hide behind something, revealing it is impossible to tell when they are truely dead.

Overall: Obviously I give this game a 3/5 assuming that HL2 still sets the bar at a 5/5 (even if it truely isnt that good). I would play this game but at the 49.95 I payed for it, I feel ripped off.

Better Have a Good Video Card!

This is simply the BEST PC game, that I've ever played...PERIOD!! I've only enjoyed Resident Evil 4 on my Gamecube more than this. Since I own games on the Dreamcast, Xbox 180 and 360, Gamecube, and pc, that is saying a lot. This is the most gripping game I've played, but it is a system hog. You better have a great video card, and plenty of system memory. The graphics, sound, and gameplay is fun and fast. It has a great story, as others have mentioned in detail in there reviews. This game messes with your mind a little, and I often got chills playing late at night. It's not scarey, but very creepy at times. The game took me about 20 hours to complete, but I'm a below average gamer. The online play has tons of replay value, and I'm still playing this game today. My review has been vague, but this game is simply the best pc game I've ever played. It's better than Doom, Far Cry, and Half2. On top of that, an expansion pack is coming out later this year. You won't be disappointed in this game. I'll finish my review the way I started, by saying you better exceed the minimum requirement for your system. BE SURE TO CLICK ON THE SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS LINK listed under game information at the top of the page. Even if you have to add a stick of memory you won't be disappointed.

This is the best FPS I own and I own ALOT. Single player game is exilerating but a little short. Multiplayer is a mix between CS:Source and Unreal Tournament. MP gan get frustrating since you can get killed easily but when you wipe out 5 guys with one clip from the assault rifle it makes it that much more sweeter. This game is on the same level as Half Life 2 , Call of Duty and the first Halo. FPS's are a competitive market but among all of them F.E.A.R. takes no prisoners.
