Very disappointing...

F.E.A.R. was hyped to be one great horror shooter. It delivers some good visuals, good positional audio, but...

The story is way too poorly covered to convey any real sense of dread - OK, you're fighting evil, but how and when and why Alma became this evil agent is never really explained - nor is most of the rest of the story.

It's doled out piecemeal, as you'd expect with a horror game, but the first 80% of the game has 20% of the story, while the last 20% (when you get to the underground site) has about 40% of the story squished into a small timeframe and area. That's right - 40% + 20 % = 60%. So where is the other 40%? Apparently, hopefully, somewhere in the sequel.

The game plays like a cardboard cutout shooter, too. The weapons are wimpy (except one, which has too wide of an area of effect to use it for most of the game). The levels are very drab, run of the mill shooter stuff - big pipes and wooden crates are everwhere.

It's also very short, and the ending, because of the story elements left out of the game, comes up very abruptly.

This shooter is nothing new...sadly, it's the same old Resident Evil clone, dressed up in a 2004 era engine.

This game is getting rave reviews from many gaming critics but I have not idea why. There is absolutely nothing innovative about the gameplay. The story is confusing and nonexistent. Replay value isn't great since mulitplayer is rather uninventive and mindless. This game has extremely steep hardware requirements so if you want to run the game at high resolutions you'd better have a pretty powerful videocard (6800gt-7800gtx) . If you're a fanboy you'll probably not recommend my review but if you haven't purchased this game I'm truly against getting this before it hits the bargain bin. Be patient and wait for Call of Duty 2 or try Quake 4.

Copy protection killed the product

Original copy protection in the game was ok, but after updating to the latest version (I believe 1.2), the copy protection is so intense that the game will not even start. They claim it's finding DVD emulation software, but I have none installed. They have basically crippled the game. It's too bad because it was very interesting until they decided to tell me I could not play it any longer.

stale, generic FPS wrapped in a nice engine

If you like seeing what they're doing with game graphics, go ahead and play this. You'll be very impressed for a few minutes.

The rest of your time will be split between 2 things:
1) walking through warehouse after warehouse filled with cardboard boxes and crates. i'm not kidding. crates. this game mechanic was stale over a decade ago.

2) watching predictably placed cutscenes where a character lifted straight from the ring "terrorizes you". this is in quotes because it's really not suspenseful or scary, seemingly there to give the game an illusion of plot.

so if you enjoy walking through crate filled warehouses, killing the same enemies repeatedly, then down a long hallway where you know a cutscene is coming, then watching the cutscene unfold in a faux-jhorror way... more power to you, buy this game.

I don't, and therefore I couldn't even get past 2 hours before I had no interest in ever playing this again.

This is my first review and I am only doing this because Sierra introduced me into the gaming world and has lately disappointed. I hope someone at Sierra reads this and plants a seed to start developing games with heart, like they used to (i.e. King's Quest, Space Quest, etc.. old school I know). F.E.A.R. is nothing new in any respect. I am a true horror fan and bought this game based on the positive reviews places on Amazon. I guess I'm reading the wrong people. I am MANY hours into the game and have contemplated selling it before finishing it..a first for me. The graphics are decent, not even close to HL2, the sound can be eerie at times but the gameplay is BORING. Too much shoot enemy soldiers and not enough FEAR! I am tired of peeking around a corner, hoping to sneak up on someone, yet they spot me with ridiculous ease. Don't waste your time with this one. I don't want to compare HL2 to this (although technically all game developers should ) but all I will say is that HL2 is far scarier at times than FEAR, and it's not even advertised as frightening.

Sierra does what no one could have expected. They pulled out a winner that could very likely be competeing for PC Game of the Year in the Shooter market.

To start with Sierra has had a past history of hit or misses and I being a fan of Tribes 2 decided to give this game a shot. After playing the Demo I bought the game on release day.

To say the least I was impressed and the game ran REALLY smooth on my system figureing it's not the best in terms of tech. I run a Athlon 64 3200+ with one gig of RAM with a Radeon 9600 SE Video Card and so far have not ran into any slow down issues.

The game upon Installation (Be sure you have space cause installation requires nearly 5 Gigs of Hard Drive Space) and starting up the game it scanned my system and optimized it to get the best performance it could and so far I'm VERY happy with the settings.

To say the least this game deserves the Mature Rating so parents be wary of buying this game for kids. It contains alot of gore and liberal use of foul language in this game.

The physics engine within this game along with the AI was DAMN impressive. You hit loose objects and you can move them with ease. The ambiance of the music (Very Dark) along with accidently hitting an object sets the mood for this game. The AI I just have to rave about.

The enemies are smart. Smarter than anything I've ever seen in a game to date. Enemies will run for cover behind pillers or whatever they can hide behind upon coming under fire, knock over shelving to block your way to them and call for backup and if a grenade is seen being tossed yell and run for cover before it explodes.

Physics of this game is impressive. The guns actually utilize some form of physics that does not allow you to just aim and hold down the trigger and expect your automatic machine gun to stay on target. It holds a kick that will gradually pull your weapon off target so it forces you to fire in bursts which is realistic unlike other games.

While I have not "Finished" the game I'm far enough along to say that this game has done nothing but knock my socks off. The game consists of gunning down enemies utilizeing tactics and the enviroment of the building to your favor along with simple puzzle solving tactics. The worst you have to do is find a few switches, levers or Computers to allow you to further explore a level. Some exploreing of ducts is required as well but otherwise that's the extent of the exploreing.

The huge system requsites are the draw back but it's a minor one figureing if you're a HUGE PC gamer you most likely have a good enough system to play most of the current games.

Overall if you're a Halo fan you will most likely enjoy this game and it dows offer a multiplayer option to play online once you're tired of the single player but fair warning that if you play the multiplayer expect some fast kills on populated servers. The Multiplayer holds up to 16 people and I played on full servers and deaths were being handed out very fast.

You should not be disapointed with this game.

Best fps since Half Life 2

All I can say is WOW. Ive never played a fps where just shooting your starting pistol is so satisfying. The gun fights in this game are truly amazing, and the AI is very well done. This game looks amazing, howerver i did have to turn most of the settings down to medium to get the smoothest results. This is not much of a complaint for me as even on medium this is one of the best looking fps' out there. My only complaint about this game is it seemed kind of short to me. I beat it in three afternoons. Although I will definently be playing through this game more times. I will never get tired of peeking around the corner getting a couple shots off before a massive squad of enemy soldiers blast away the wall I am standing behind, creating a large cloud of dust that is impossible to see through.

Been there done that. Nothing new. Wait until it hits the bargain bin

From the little girl that resembles the character from The Ring, to the closed in extremely linear gameplay, there really isn't nothing new to this game.

Also be aware if you want to play this at a decent frame rate, make sure you have have at least a Radeon 9600 or an equivalent nvidia.

For some reason this game has been way over rated by some of the game sites. All the game has going for it is some good fire fights, no story to speak of, 3 enviornments we've seen several times that look terribly unfimished and generic at best. The game is also extreamly easy to beat, set at the highest level for a reasonable gaming expierence. No comparison to Half Life 2, Far Cry or Doom 3, not even close to being in the same league. The game looks like it's half finished and corporate said "let's get it to market", could have used alot more thought and creative input. It quickly becomes very repetive.

The copy protection penalizes even those who buy it

Don't really care about this game. Did not really play much of it because now with Sierra/Vivendi so concerned about the game being pirated, they not only have a key system in place, but also securom 7 and blacklisting of all emulators. I bought the game and imaged the dvd onto my hard drive so i would not have to deal with physical media. Anyone who has ever been at a lan party knows all too well how cd's/dvd's either get lost or broken at events like a lan party. Part of the reason i like to image the disc so i don't have to worry about what happens to the disc. This bit has now gone too far and I will never buy any vivendi/sierrra game again
