Best First Person Shooter I've Played

5 Rating: 5, Useful: 2 / 3
Date: June 05, 2007
Author: Amazon User

I have played PC games for twenty years and I can say without reservation that FEAR is the best first-person shooter I've ever played. I can't point to one single element. It has great graphics, excellent combat, effective musical scoring and all, but it's the overall experience of playing the game that is superb.

Every day for a week, I couldn't wait for night to come so I could turn out the lights and become immersed in the world. It literally made my hair stand on end. I can't remember the last time a game had that kind of effect.

Highly recommended

Nothing beats it!

F.E.A.R. is a masterpiece. Great graphics, good physics, incredible gameplay, and an engaging storyline make it an unmissable game. Anyone who has not tried this game is definitely missing out.
Something that is really cool is the vocal effects. The voices of the characters are clear and unique, and they all say what you'd really expect them to say.
F.E.A.R. is often acknowledged for it's AI (artificial intellegence). The characters will adapt to your combat strategies and react accordingly. Of course, it does have its glitches and mishaps, but no other game can match the AI of F.E.A.R.
No game is truly perfect. Something that is a bit irritating is the fact that you really shouldn't even TRY to play this game in daylight if there are windows nearby. The sun will reflect off the screen and make you completely blind to whats going on in the game. That is, actually, at first. If you are patient enough your eyes will eventually adjust, but it still is a pain in the neck to deal with.
Multiplayer is fast-paced. It's really tough to get used to and many people would suggest that you play through Single Player a couple times first. Either way, it's loads of fun. And don't worry about Single Player getting old after the tenth time through, because it really never gets old to begin with! The replay value is great because there are so many possible outcomes.
Overall, this game should not be absent from your collection. It's a lot of fun! All true gamers should have this game.

PROS
1) Great graphics, good physics, incredible gameplay, and an engaging storyline
2) Never gets boring no matter how many times you play it!
3) Unmatched artificial intelligence

CONS
1) When you first start playing, if it is daylight out, the sun will reflect off the screen. The reason for this is that the game is very dark, as it is intended to be played later in the day.

Too short

3 Rating: 3, Useful: 2 / 3

First of all, two words: too short! I did not rush through this game, like I normally do, and it only took me eleven hours to finish it - that's a terrible length for a First Person Shooter. The actual game is great! The lights, sounds, graphics are amazing, if you have good enough hardware, and the story is gripping, but it is way too short.

The story unfolds gradually, and then at the end, you're hit with a massive amount of background and the game ends. It has your attention, now they should have used it to their advantage instead of just ending the game. Being used to spending 25+ hours on a game, like in Half-Life 1&2 or DOOM3, it was rather disappointing.

I highly recommend the game, but don't expect it to be a nice, long, convoluted story.

Creepy Experience

4 Rating: 4, Useful: 2 / 3

I do like the slow-mo feature, but no real explanation of who the protagonists is. Very little background, up until the end of the game. Creepy azz game. Lots of empty scares, but the main attraction is still the action. The scenerios and sound/music create a very creepy game atmosphere experience. Similar to Doom 3, but without the zombies and demons. I started the game playing with a PC containing ATi AIW 9600XT, Athlon XP 2600+ 2.08GHz, Gigabyte nForce2 motherboard, 512MBx2 Kingston PC3200 HPX memory in dual channel, and Seagate 80GB IDE Ultra ATA100 HDD. I was able to run the game at 1024x768 res, but toned down the graphic settings quite a bit. I'm sure I was getting 20 fps or less, being my aiming was terrible even at point blank. I then ended the game on a newly built PC with Athlon 64 3200+ 2.0 (skt 939), eVGA GF 7800GT, 512MBx2 Kingston HPX in d.c., and 300GB IDE Ultra ATA100 HDD. I was able to play at 12..x1024 resolution, 2xAA, and some other higher settings. I still experienced some slight chugging, but overall a much smoother experience. But no chugging after breaking in the new system build. This is a system hog game being there isn't always a lot of things happening on screen. It will not look very pleasant at lower settings, so don't expect it to look like old games on your yester-year system. Overall I enjoyed the entertainment it offered, and pretty much on edge throughout the experience. I would only recommend buying game if you have a Radeon 9700/9800 PRO 256-bit memory interface or GeForce 6600GT videocard and greater than 512MB of memory otherwise you may not get a smooth experience. Unless you don't mind the tone down graphics, 800x600 res and less than 20 fps. Or try the demo first and see if you like it or not on your current system www.gamershell.com I never recommend a complete system upgrade for one or two games so try demo first.

Doom III meets Rainbow Six

Sorry I don't play Half Life, so I went with a game I do play.

Alright lets get into it:
Pros: Great Graphics, far richer than almost any game on the market. The scenes although mundane, are amazing because of how well they are rendered.

Weapons Choice, excellent array of weapons, including variations of some weapons. In other words, not all asualt rifles are created equally.

Movement, fairly easy to learn the moves. I enjoy the fact that you can beat your enemies to death with your rifle if things get close and hairy. You also have a few ninja moves (kicks and punches) that are cool.

SLO MO, interesting concept, your character can move faster than everybody else for a few seconds. This makes everybody look like they've slowed down. This allows you to get the hell out of dodge fast when you are surrounded. Shooting people in the Slo Mo mode is O.K. but, the action of your weapon is so slow you might only get two shots off before you come out of slow mo.

A MOUNTED FLASHLIGHT!! A tremendous improvement over DOOM's use of a hand held light that made you switch between weapons and light. It can only work for short periods of time between charges, but it make the game much more playable.

AI and the Clone Army, HANDS DOWN THE BEST BOT/AI FOE TO DATE. I can't say enough about these guys. They enter the room giving each other cover fire, circle around an entrenched foe, and they lay traps for you. They talk to each other before they do some things, like "You go left and lay down fire". Very Very Cool!!! Hell as far as I'm concerned this is the main reason to play the game.

No Palm Pilot.

Cons: The graphics are so bitchen, that my meager Pentium 4 3.2 with BFG 6800 can't come even close to running the program at maximum graphics level. (I WAS SO PISSED, I JUST UPGRADED TWO MONTHS AGO!!)

I really couldn't follow the story very well. I got it, it just didn't hook me, I didn't care about some tortured little girl's soul. It was lame.

Seemed to rip off Doom III a little too much at times.

It was pretty easy at the Medium level of play, needed to be harder.

Felt an awful lot like a console game.

Overall I enjoyed this game tremendously. Much better than I thought it would be. I can't say enough about the AI/Bots part of the game. A great game, I say buy it.

Chilling....Yet, very addicting

Well, I'm outta the loop when it comes to games, until I recently played Half Life for the first time just a month ago. With that being said I am now hooked on games and went out and bought this cool looking game called F.E.A.R. This game is phenomonol!! Grapics are outstanding(I have a brand new 3.33Ghz 1GB ram Laptop). Play this game at night with the lights off and headphones in and you will actually freak out on how scary this game is. I dont get scared very easily, but damn this is a creepy game. The realism is outstanding and the choice of weapons to include a vaporising gun that leaves the enemy with just a skeleton. I love it!!
The downside was that the levels can look confusing as some of them look very similiar. Also, when you shoot, the aimer doesnt stay put, it moves up like a real gun, its ok I guess, but it definitely takes some getting used to. All in all I would highly recommend this game. Go out and scare yourself silly.

Not Scary, Too Linear, Stale Environrment

2 Rating: 2, Useful: 3 / 7

I found this to be just another ordinary shooter. Its thin plot didn't scare me at all (see such classics as Clive Barker's Undying and System Shock 2 if you want a truly scary shooter). There are a few NPCs (Non Playable Characters) that try to move the plot along but your time with them is way too brief for you to care what happens to them next. Your progress through the environments in extremely linear which is exacerbated by the fact the environments are ALL buildings. The whole game takes place in a collection of office buildings and warehouses where you'll fight in close quarters surrounded by the mandatory collection of boxes, crates, and pipes. I admit that the enemy AI is very good and the graphics are impressive but they weren't enough to save me from boredom after only a few hours. Overall, a big dissapointment.

a waste of time and money

I am really sorry to have wasted my money, and especially my time on this stupid game. First, I don't play the multigame version but had to sign in to the invasive programs like Gamespy Arcade, which were difficult to get rid of even after deleting the game.

I spent hours trying to load and play this game. After loading from the disc I went to the website, which doesn't seem to have anywhere to get the updates. There were some suggested sites for updates, so I went to one and guess what, they wanted to charge me for the update. After I gave that up I tried to play the game, but the start menu told me there was a new version available. That took almost forty minutes to download.

The game loads each scene really slow, and you have to go through a cumbersome clicking process to skip all the cinematic stuff. Then the graphics were screwed up, and I could not play through the second scene. I was not about to spend another two hours trying to reload the game to see if that worked. A game should be easy and non-invasive to load... but it seemed to me like these jerks just want to shake you down for more and more money. My advice, be afraid, very afraid!

Closed BETA testing

We were only able to play it multiplayer, the beta did not include a single player campaign. This game has excellent FPS gameplay. The additional options are a refreshing bonus. While holding a weapon you can use it melee (for example a buttstock to the head), also a jump kick attack that if aimed properly can take down an enemy with one hit. Holding your weapon and still being able to throw a grenade is always useful. The weapon variety is nice (although not complete, as we were just testers).
The few glitches we did find should be easily fixed by the time this game hits the shelf.

And come'on, what could be better than a 8 year old girl as a head badguy. (ok so that's personal interest)

Awesome!

I absolutely LOVED this game. I'm a major horror hound, and there aren't a lot of good horror/thriller games out there. This is my favorite horror FPS so far. Check out the demo if you're not sure about it.

The good: Beautiful graphics, killer slow motion effects, great explosions (just see for yourself. As far as I'm concerned FEAR is second to none in this category), good story (not exactly amazing, but better than HL2 IMO), good sound effects.

The bad: no 16x10 widescreen support, not the most satisfying ending.
