This game is absolutely incredible.

For those of you who don't know, Amy is in this game, and to unlock her you have to complete each character's storyline, and they all have to have all 7 emeralds. Or at least i think that's how it goes.

AN ENTERTAINING HANDHELD TITLE 8 OUT OF 10

I got this game years ago as a birthday present, but I still have a lot of fun with this game despite the many great games I've played. The storyline is basically nonexistant during gameplay, other than assuming Dr. Eggman is up to his evil deeds again. The gameplay still revolves around a 2D view and running through various obstacles in the very colorful worlds as Sonic, Tails, Amy or Knuckles. The environments are very detailed and have a nice cartoon look to them bringing back the old 2D memories of the SNES or Genesis. The gameplay is very fun, and simple and it gets more challenging as you progress through the stages. There are problems that will hamper you during gameplay and yes, it will cost you a few cheap deaths. The camera sometimes has a problem trying to keep up with your speed, so sometimes you won't see a certain obstacle that can ultimately kill you. The second problem is certain obstacles you can't figure out how to get past because you don't get any hints of any kind for it. If you miss the good old days of Sonic and don't want to try any of his new sucky adventures you should play this fun game.

A fun game, but zero replay value, unless you have another copy.

This Sonic game was indeed challenging and fun. And you don't see many challenging Sonic games out there, so this is a rare gem indeed. However, there are some problems I find with this game. One would probably be that some of the level design is rather bland, visually and structurally. For example, Techno Base. It looks good on paper I assure you, but when you really play through it, it doesn't really impress. However, it offers up a very good challenge indeed. Next is the music. The music is ok. Not terrible, not good, but ok. Nothing much to say about the music. The challenge I assure you is indeed worthy of gamers who are at least above average. But your casual gamer might find it frusterating, what with the annoying part about sending you back to the first act if you get a game over in any part of the game. I particularly like what they did with the boss levels in which they force you to run the entire time while fighting the boss. This offers very good challenge and an interesting new perspective in the game.

Now for the most ANNOYING part of the game. Collecting the Chaos Emeralds. I don't know which game is worse in this case, Sonic Advance 2, or 3? But it is so frusterating, I assure you, YOU WONT WANT TO DO IT AGAIN. Unless your a gamer of unusual caliber, your certainly won't be playing this again. That is of course, if you bother collecting the Chaos Emeralds.

To collect all seven, you'll need to find seven special rings in any act. Doesn't matter which, all that matters is that you do it in every zone. And trust me, this is no easy task. It takes alot of trial and error, and it's especially hard for a character like Sonic to pull it off, because many a time, there's no turning back, and you must get it right. However, characters like Tails differ, because they can fly back. Unfortunatey though, you have to do it with all 5 characters, so you haven't a choice. The special stages aren't too bad. In fact, they sort of remind me of the special stages in Sonic The Hedgehog CD. All in all, you won't want to do this again, it's a painful task indeed.

If the game just had multiple files, this wouldn't be a problem.

Graphically, this game is pretty darn good if I do say so myself. Visuals are crisp and with depth, sprites are very well done. No complaints. The frames per second are nice, the game is very fast and excilerating.

All in all this is a decent Sonic game, but it would do so much better if it supported mutible files. My suggestion, rent it if you can before you buy. And if you truely want it, get 2 copy's. Because again, replay value is practically at a zero if you haven't another copy.

Sonic Advance much more "Advanced"! (by Laura)

This is a great game. First off, comparing it to Sonic Advance, which is a good game in its own right, this game is indeed a big improvement. You not only get to play as all of the characters you could in Sonic Advance, but there is a cool new character included, or I should say two, Cream the Rabbit and her partner Cheese the chao. The levels are pretty and various, from the quaint Leaf Forest, to the highly enjoyable Music Plant to the icy loveliness of Ice Paradise. They have added what is called "after images" which really adds speed and depth when the characters are running, for it gives the illusion of great speed. There is also this extremely cute feature, that when you hold up on the control pad each character does a unique action. This won't help you through the gameplay much, but if you are not in a hurry to get out of the level, at least watch it for a minute. It really is cute. I also heard Knuckles' action can be use as an attack. The boss fights are very different from the other games as, except for the last two, you have to attack them while you are running. This has various advantages and disadvantages, but overall it makes the boss fights fun and enjoyable with a challenging difficulty. Personally, how Cream can beat most of the bosses is my favorite. She makes things ridiculously easy, because all you have to do is smack the B button a couple of times, and her partner Cheese takes care of things. Now, there are indeed some disadvantages with the game. Here is a list of them:

1. As I said earlier, the fact you have to tackle most of the bosses while running can have disadvantages. It is harder to dodge attacks, and if you are struck, it can take some time to recover and catch up. The good news is you won't die if you fall behind, as the screen will just scoot you along; but if you don't enjoy this sort of combat, than that's a for sure minus.

2. The special stages are fun. It's basic, you just have to run around a set area, and try to get enough rings before time runs out while simultaneously avoiding a robot that is pursuing you. The catch? Try getting to the special stages. Unlike other Sonic games where you just jump on a spring, you have to collect all seven of these SPECIAL rings in the act. Please do not get these confused with normal rings. Special rings are big rings with what I think are wings in the upper center. Anyway, how do you get them? You have to find them. Easier said than done, because most of the time this is infuriatingly difficult, as it is easy to miss one or two, and be left out of the Special Stage. I admit I had to have outside help to find all of these annoying rings. On top of that if you lose the Special stage, simply not getting enough normal rings, you have to collect those Special rings ALL OVER AGAIN!!! While this normally isn't a probem, the hardest special stages (I am speaking of the last one and the second to last one, in Techno Base and Egg Utopia) are also in the acts with the hardest to get to Special rings, and the hardest to survive levels. That's the last thing, if you don't make it out of the level on one life alive, you can say "bye bye" to all the rings you managed to collect.

3. You have to unlock virtually everything. Unless you can progress in the game all you can play as is Sonic. You have to play with him and bump into Cream, Tails, and Knuckles in order to play with them. This game has a tiny chao garden, but you won't receive it untill you complete the game (chaos emeralds included) with one character. There is also stuff like time attack and sound test that you can unlock by completing the game with more than one character, but this is very difficult, and you will be pretty lucky to get the tiny chao garden.

4. You have to complete the game with four characters to get to play as Amy Rose. On top of that, Amy is just an extra, which is a real shame since sega missed out on what could have potentially been a funny cutscene in Sonic's story. I will say that it is worth it to unlock her if you can, for her moves are new and improved, her new spindash is funny, and her control pad action is cute. Be warned that if you do decide to try and complete the game with her it is for your sheer enjoyment only. In other words, you get no rewards for beating the game with her.

5. There is some repitition. If you want to unlock absolutely everything, or complete the game completely, you have to beat the game with every character (including Amy, if you want a real 100%). This means starting with Leaf Forest and going all the way past Egg Utopia and the Final Boss, chaos emeralds in tow and everything at least 5 times. The one thing I do not understand is how you can rescue, say Knuckles in an area as far as Sky Canyon, and yet when you begin playing as him, you must start all the way back at Leaf Forest. It's how it is though, and don't ask me how all of the characters manage to get back there. The Special ring locations always stay the same, so you are just going through the absolute same zones and bosses around 5 times (if you choose to go through it all at once), give or take difficulty depending on you character (Creams easier than Sonic for example). You will also have to beat the extra boss once, which has a nice difficulty level. At least the levels are, for the most part, enjoyable, so you may not mind going through some of them so many times. One of my personal favorites is the Music Plant, where you can actually hop on a xylophone (thats pronounced ZYE-luh-fohn, for those who are youngsters). Also the scenes after the extra boss are also worth seeing if you can conquer it.

6. The tiny chao garden once again fails to impress as much as one of the big gardens in the Sonic Adventure series. However, it is still a good place to level up your baby chao, and in this game the chao seem more "Life-like" as they actually use the pool. The minigames also have a little fun in them, I personally prefer the one where you have to make sure Cheese doesn't fall on the ground while collecting the rings. You will laugh when he does though, as Cream covers her face with her hands, while Cheese's face says as plain as day "OUCH!"

That about concludes it for me. The music is so-so, not Sega's best, but still good. I basically rated the game for four star fun, because of the flaws I have listed, but five stars overall because it is a HUGE improvement from Sonic Advance, which is also fun. Speaking of fun, if that and those old speedy thrills is what you want, than for pete sakes PURCHASE THIS VIDEOGAME!

I actually got up to Final Zone: XX. I got there with CREAM THE RABBIT. With KNUCKLES THE ECHIDNA I got to: EGG OTOPIA. With SONIC THE HEDGEHOG I Got up to: TECHNO BASE. And finally last but not least MILES "TAILS" PROWER I got him to: TECHNO BASE. I would give a WARNING for kids under 10 this game is very hard but it may look easy. But it is very hard and I am 11 years old so don't be fooled if you get it. I am a hardcore gamer. WARNING! BOSSES are Harsh I tryed many times to beat bosses but they are rougher as you struggle through the long long game.

Sonic rocks totally better then the old one. Sonic has been approved. The best selling Game Boy game ever. I mean for 2003 the graphics are 100% bright and shiny. 10+ will have a splended time with it 0-9 would kill the game. Game is so much better then Pokemon and Yu Gi Oh Dragon Ball Z ETC. The best of the best Game Boy games Sonic Advance 2 is the one for you.

If you have any concerns please write a review and I will respond. My 9 year old:Brudda hates it. Never believe people under 10!

Fun for the majority but ends up being too damn hard.

Like any other 2D Sonic game, this game does offer a huge amount of fun, with colorful levels and jazzy music. But the last 3 stages are so damn hard you'll just be chucking your Nintendo against the wall in a fit of rage.

There are too many traps and stingers in each level. For a game that sort of promotes itself on being the fastest platformer out there it is quite cruel to send you straight into enemy, losing all your rings and leaving you powerless to do anything about it. The levels do seem a bit expansive as well and lack that tight, punchy feel of the Mega Drive/Genesis games.

In this game you can play as Sonic, Tails, Knuckles and a new character called Cream, who is a rabbit. Strangely enough, Sonic is the blandest character of the lot in this game as he has no useful powers. I ended up getting the furthest with Tails since he has the ability to go airbourne. The last boss is simply impossible and the game is not rewarding enough to take all 4 characters this far.

But hey, if you can get it cheap then give it a go. Maybe I'm just really rubbish at it.

I reccommend this game. It rocks in the car. It rocks in the hall. SONIC Advance 2 is a world hit 10+ will like it I am 11 so thats why I say 10+ 5 year olds will get frusterated since it would be too hard for them to enjoy. 4-9 would say it is boring but anyone Kid-Adult would be very pleased with Sonic The Hedgehog, Cream The Rabbit, Tails, Knuckles, Amy Rose my little bro says this game is boring he is 9. 10+ buy it now before they sell out.

Bad. Buy something Else!!!

I loved the first one.
what happened?
the music is okay...
the controls are fine. those are the only good things.
sometimes very frustrating.
can't go to chao garden UNTILL you beat the game WITH all 7 chaos emeralds.
it's part of "completing the game"
and you can never unlock anything new just by beating the game alone, you NEED all 7 chaos emeralds.

sometimes this game runs slow too.
and very VERY frustrating when beating a boss because you never get 1 ups because their so hard to get.

so you get about 3-4 tries on a boss. seems like enough? nope.
i've also gotten stuck on a very VERY hard level, and after a month or two i finally beat the level.

DO NOT BUY! use your money on something worth while like Sonic Advance 1, or Super Mario Advance 2 Super Mario World. Just don't buy this cheaply made peace of junk!

a return to form? no, but perhaps an improvement..

I'll start by pointing out that I have not played the other Sonic Advance games, so I don't know how this compares. I do know how it compares to the old Genesis games though, and that is negatively.

But forget that for a second - what are the good parts of this game? For starters, the graphics are pretty sweet. The redesigned character animations are very visually appealing. Sonic rips across the screen in a way more similar to his 3D counterpart than the old 16-bit hedgehog. The sprites have an anime kick to them that is fitting to the modern Sonic persona.

Also, some of the level designs are very nice from both a graphic and gameplay standpoint. Gameplay elements from the 3D platformers have been nicely integreted IE grind rails, and in some places the level designs use these elements quite creatively. The use of anti-gravity on Egg Utopia, while nothing new to the Sonic level vocabulary, manages to maintain a sense of speed and awe throughout. In conjunction with the level designs, some of the badniks are actually fairly clever. I was surprised to find some of their behavior wasn't a simple rehash of the tried and true genesis baddies.

On the subject of level designs, though, the trap designs are hideous (some so badly designed as to be almost 100% unavoidable.) The balance between tricky traps and keeping up the speed of the game completely lacks subtelty. The Sky Canyon stage contains some of the worst use of pitfalls in a platformer I've ever seen. You have to perform some pretty rediculous button wizadry to pass it as Sonic, the only main character without the ability to fly.

Also, while we're on character designs, let's talk about Cream the Rabbit for a second. She's useless. She contains almost no unique gameplay elements and is basically a shorter, less versitile version of Tails. The only truly unique aspect of Cream is the use of Cheese (horrible pun, by the way) who is too slow on the draw to be of any use in a game that puts so much emphasis on speed. Cheese does however make the boss battles obscenely easy.

The boss battles at first are a credit to this game - the running battle gimmick does make some of the fights pretty tricky, and they're certainly more engaging than the fights Sonic Adventure had to offer. However the game relies on the gimmick too much, and by the end of the game I'm pretty sick of it. What happened to boss fights that are all different? That use the environment and circumstance to dictate the gaming style? On a similar note, the final boss battle is horrid. I won't reveal why but it is both far too easy and frustratingly difficult in a way that isn't good.

Even for a game series that gets by on only the faintest hint of a plot, this game's story is nonexistant. The Genesis games used intentional changes in setting, mood-appropriate music and suggestive boss battles to drive an implied story. Your imagination just had to fill in the blanks. Here the story is literally: run to the right, beat Robotnik. It's not a convincing motivator.

I could nitpick a number of other little things, like the grade B techno soundtrack or the ludicrous "starting line" at the beginning of every stage, but the main point is that this is a bit of a disappointment for a veteran of the Genesis classics. Yes it has brought speed back to the Sonic series, but it's a shallow sort of speed. It totally lacks the wonder and mystery of the classic games as well as their sense of exploration and discovery. I can remember every step of the old games but most of these levels are simple - and sometimes frustrating - one-way rollercoaster rides. Most of the undeserved criticisms leveled at vintage Sonic can unfortunately be applied here. It's a nice little taste of nostalgia for those of us who miss the hog's career peak, but it's no Sonic 3 & Knuckles.
