It almost pains me to write this review as I am sure people will hate my review as much as I hated this game. The Good: absolutely beautiful game. Good animations, great worlds. This game is great for people who will take the hours necessary to master the racing in this game. This game could last forever for them. The Bad: However, for those of us with lives that like to game from time to time for some fun times, avoid this game at all costs. It is flipping hard. Without hours of practice, you will slam into 3-4 walls of every race, thus insuring your defeat and frustration.

Bottom Line: Is it fun? If you have lots of time to master it. I am told you will love the game once you do. Will I keep it? I am also told you have no life if you spend it all mastering the fine art of a VIDEO GAME. Is it for kids? Nope. Too hard.

its really fun

i recommend this game because it has a lot of variety of cars and tracks. the wifi can get you internet and the latest downloads. its fun and never gets old but one thing is when there is a really hard racing track and you just cant beat it, it makes you frustrated you know what i mean? sometimes i play a track for an hour before i beat it. and also i dont know if something is wrong but i heard reports that their games keep freezing( it happened to mine too) so you can get it if you like i mean its really fun and some other games i recommend are twisted metal head on and nba street showdown over all its ok and worth it

A truly impressive game.....at first

WipEout Pure has proven to be one of the most visually stunning games I have ever seen on a portable handheld. The gameplay is mad-fun, sound and special effects are unparalled, and the music is pretty neat too.

However, this game does have its serious flaws that cripple the fun-factor only a short time after playing this game for the first time; when playing against the AI in tournament mode, its a real fun challege- a game wouldnt really be fun at all if there was no challenge involved, but if the difficulty level is ludicrously high, winning and passing a race would become nearly impossible. This is highly evident as you ascend through the tournament, and namely, one or two race-maps in "Ascension" mode, while playing it in "Flash" difficulty. This is especially true for people who are new to the WipEout Pure series, like myself. I honestly hate this game only 5 days after buying it, and now regret spending those lousy 40 bucks on a game that could have been so great. That's what makes me have a serious grudge against some game developers- they can never learn from their previous mistakes, and will always recreate games with very few innovative features, which suffer from some sort of fatal gameplay-imbalancement. Why is this still happening to a game whose series has been around for nearly a decade now?

In addition, there are some minor framerate issues- but I'm not surprised about that due to the amazing graphics quality in this game. Music length and selection is quite poor, but what they already have (electronic-dance) is great, and fits very nicely with the gameplay.

I highly recommend this game for everyone - whether or not you're a beginner - but if you want to go ahead and buy it, don't be surprised if you get extremely frustrated with some racing events.

Hope this review helps.

Not what I was expecting...

I'm sure most of us here had the original version for the PS1. 'Pure' lacks many things including actual control of your ship.

I've had the game for less than a week and maybe 3 playing hours and I already want to take it back. The only thing that seems to make the control better is to keep it in first-person view.

Don't run away yet and start dogging me on this. To me, it's just not living up to it's hype as "a must have".

Boring but not bad visually

Very suprised at the graphics but the racing it self is really boring, turn left or right, pretty much all there is too it. Should have spent a little more time making it more interesting.

Fast n' fun

I dig the Wipeout games, they're about the only racers I bother to play anymore. This one is no exception. The play control, once you get used to being on a PSP, is pretty great, the graphics are amazing (I couldn't believe I was playing a portable system @ first). There are not as many levels as there could be, but some of the levels are the most fun I have encountered in any racer outside of the arcade. The only complaint I have, is that there does not appear to be an option to upgrade your ships. To me that was one of the best features of the Wipeout series, adding even more replay value. Then again I have not yet beaten the game entirely, and perhaps it is an option I have not unlocked yet. Whatever the case, the game goes for pretty cheap (I paid $10) and is well worth the money by my standards. I'd recommend it to anyone who likes fast paced games who owns a PSP.

This game is great! it has amzing graphics and it is my first game. 1 problem is that it can freeze while you are playing. dont worry if it happens, because it is quite normal. The music is really interesting. not good not bad but also strange. I would advise this game to a person who likes
battle-racing games. By the way, if you are getting a psp get screen protectors, a memory stick reader, and a nice case!

Great game!

Awesome laucnh title - love it!! The look and feel of the Wipeout series has been perfectly captured on the new platform. Difficulty ramps up nicely after you mosey around the tracks on the starter levels and unlock the faster levels. Free-practice lets you learn a track inside and out until you're ready to take on a real race.
And once you're sick of playing against the AI it's dead-simple to challenge your mates head-on or merge their best lap-times with yours to beat on the tube.

There is however a gripe: you have to go through about 6 screens before you get to the main menu.. so switching from listening to music to playing Wipeout Pure takes quite a while. There should be a 'quick-launch' option - straight into the main menu with your save game auto-loaded.

[EDIT - 2005.06.13]
Having played the game for a while now, I've come across situations where the title will crash from time to time. This happens mostly shortly after resuming from standby mode, so take care. So far it doesn't seem to happen if I enter standby mode from the menu, rather than from inside a game.

WARNING: On one occasion a crash corrupted my savegame - so back up your game save data from time to time!! This is easily done by connecting your PSP to your PC with a USB cable.

On another note, the first download pack (Gamma) has been available for a while now, adding more tracks and another ship - awesome!!

Great Gameplay with Graphics easy on the eyes

I was too excited about another Wipeout game until I had read some reviews and happen to get it with my PSP over in Iraq for a Birthday/Father's Day present. Wow...is a good way to describe what my first experience was when I put this game in. It's controls are superb for a handheld given the different layouts to choose from and the ability to download extra content reminds me of why I enjoy Xbox Live so much. The graphics completely blew me away after playing GBA for a couple of years and not believing they could actually pull off such a feat in a little package. The tracks are absolutely a blast to play through and sometimes you may find yourself losing your bearing and crashing when you first see a new track the first time. There's different things going on above and all around you from airships flying past, to the water around the tunnels as you plunge below the surface. This game would be a guaranteed hit for multi-play no doubt. It has very good replay overall given the fact it supports content download and various degrees of difficulty. A High Reccomend for racing fans with little patience for load times as it is one of the faster loading games.
