Stylized gaming is fun every now and then

The appeal of Paper Mario - The Thousand Year Door is the game's sense of style. The makers of this game have explored many different ways to exploit the built-in comedy of the second dimension. Since we view the world in three dimensions, there's something inherently funny about a world comprised of only two dimensions.

The silly dialogue also adds to the comedy of the game. For the first half of the game, it's fun to read what the characters will say next, and I remember laughing quite often. As the game wears on, however, the tone shifts slightly, and the dialogue becomes tedious and un-funny. After about 20 hours of fun, the game suddenly wants you to care about the characters and their concerns. I didn't like this change in tone.

The game is far too easy until the last few battles. There's a lack of balance that doesn't sit well with me. As you get closer to the end, you'll have to endure tedious puzzles and revisit areas over and over again. I thought the game makers got rather lazy when designing the last half of the game.

But the game is a lot of fun initially. It's not necessary to finish the game. I recommend playing it until you feel like you've had enough. There's no big revelation at the end that don't already foresee. If you are in the mood for a silly, sometimes clever, and highly stylized, turn-based role playing game, Paper Mario - The Thousand Year Door is for you.

Paper Mario 2 great for casual entertainment.

I bought Paper Mario 2 for my neice to play when she comes over to visit, now she comes over to play the game. It has an interesting story line and many characters to interact with. The puzzles are only moderatly hard so she hasn't gotten stuck and lost interest, but the story is long enough that we haven't just breezed through it either. It's better if you take so side trips to work the "missions" and fight in the arena (where you can build up your levels faster). You can also revisit previous lands and re-fight the random encounters.

The only drawback to the game play is the long cut screens that you have to read. The game flow would be better if there was an option to read these to you, like Super Monkey Ball 2. I know, I know, educational aspect of reading yourself, but that's her parents job, not mine :)

Game masters will find this way too easy but if you just want entertainment without getting stuck for long periods of time on puzzles then Parper Mario 2 will work for you.

Well worth the $20 price

I really like this game because there is lots of action. But it there is lots of reading and this game goes at a slow pace. But there are lots of cool grahics in this game. I liked the papaer mario for Nintendo 64 better though.

I'm addicted.

I'm not much of a gamer... hence, why I'm buying a game for Gamecube when there's the Wii out now - I'm too cheap to get a new system, haha. But when I find a game that I like, I play like a woman obsessed... and this game totally has me hooked! It's fun, and there's lots of elements to it - battles, helping people at the trouble center, collecting badges, etc... the backtracking through lands is a little tiring after a while, but that doesn't seem to stop me from playing it! :) I haven't liked a GC game like this since Zelda the Wind Waker and Four Swords games.

Good game crappy music

This is a fun game, I just bought it now after all these years of wanting to play it. It was on sale here at Amazon and I figured what the hell. It took about 4 days to finish this game, and while the gameplay was pretty fun, the fighting parts did tend to get kind of repetitive and boring. The music in the game is also horrible, it sounds good the first 5 or 10 minutes you hear it, but after listening to the same tune throughout the entire game you want to destroy the game. The variation in the game is what keeps you playing, as I'm sure if all you did was fight baddies the entire time this game would be incredibly boring. You can play as Princess Peach, and you get to play as Bowser. It keeps things interesting. Anyway, this is a good entry level RPG, it probably doesn't have the depth that seasoned RPG players are looking for, however it is a good one for the kids.

A must for Mario fans!

i think that the game itself has a good plotline. I've played the original, and it was good. The new characters idea is awesome. Plus, the audience watching you thing is a new twist to the entire Paper Mario file. Thank You, Nintendo!!!!!!!!!!

Too Much Reading

I may be 26, but at heart I am 6. I love video games. I was sooo excited to play Paper Mario (I rented it on a month long pass from BlockBuster). Well after 30 minutes of reading, I was too bored to continue on. Not to say I hate to read... but come on, it's 2004.... the characters should talk!

It reminds me of the disappointment I have for "Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga" for GBA. Too much reading... a side kick... a RPG.

Sorry to say, I gave up on this game! I only gave the game 2 stars because it has great graphics & has Mario. Keep in mind (which I didn't)... if you hate RPGs, steer clear from this game! If you like to read stories and play RPGs, buy this game!

This game is a great one, it is pretty easy with fun levels. It has so-so graphics and great sounds. Mostly you play as Mario, but sometimes you play as Peach or Bowser. If you want a RPG, go play Lord of the Rings.

Paper Mario is the best RPG for Gamecube besides maybe Final Fantasy Christal Chronicals. It has great gameplay and a wonderful plot. I loved this game and suggest it for others.
