Great Game not the Best!!

5 Rating: 5, Useful: 2 / 2

While this game seems kid oriented and the story a bit dumn...(clean up an island..?) the game play is great. Anyone whether young or old will appreciate the graphics the twisting story and the game play. Some may be sceptical about the FLUDD device that Mario carries with him but it simply becomes something natural on Mario and you'll feel lost without it in the special courses where you don't use it since it was snatched. The game designers made this game in such a way that the FLUDD device that seems like it would make the game easier is simply a necessity not making the game easier but enhancing the gameplay.

For those who like to play a game with a good story, this one's got one. At parts the story will make you say, "I knew that was gonna happen...AGAIN!" When not three minutes later you'll say, "WHAT!!!"

The graphics in this game are simply beautiful with this you'll see what the gamecube is really capable of.

super mario sunshine is the kind of gem that only myamoto could create its a blast to play and its difficult. IT Always keeps you coming back for more until you reach 120 shines which I havent yet but I will. I am only at 35 right now THE WATER IS THE BEST WATER I HAVE EVER SEEN IN A GAME (YES BETTER THAN WAVE RACE. This game is a masterpeice and along side zelda ocarina of time it is my favorite game ever. If your a true gamer hardcore or not play this game for it alone is worth buying a gamecube.

Nintendo has now hit an all time low for new ideas. I don't know how they could look the sludge look more like poo. If you have ever played Conker's Bad Fur Day, you might recognize the relation. The idea might have been better if they had not used Mario characters, but the main concept of the game just boggles the mind. Why would they make you clean up an island that was graffitied before you even came? Does it make any sense?

The graphics could have been better, and they look like fairly upgraded N64 graphics. Every boss that you come across in the first 30 min. (Which was all of the game that I felt I could play without throwing myself out a window) is a pirahna plant. YOU SHOOT THEM IN THE MOUTH WITH WATER?! What is going on? This game could have been better with a better story, better graphics, and a better concept, but Nintendo obviously didn't spend enough time on making this game as good as Super Mario 64 was.

A bit too rough around the edges

I have been a diehard fan of Mario games since the beginning, but I must say, this one was the biggest downer so far. After sparing [te cost] from my already tight in-college budget to buy the game, I played it for as long as I could handle it, and then sold it on ebay. Right from the get-go it becomes very apparent that the game is lacking in decent voice acting. Princess Peach especially sounds annoying and ditzy, while all Mario does is whine and grunt. The graphics are colorful, but look less polished than many gamecube titles. The only visual splendor the game had to offer was the water animation, which I must say is some of the best I've ever seen. Mario controls much like he did in M64, but when it comes to the water canon, it becomes a whole new ball game. The canon controls are clunky, and to make matters worse, you have to fight with the camera in order to get the thing to spray where you want it to, this leads to quick frustration. Like I've already said, the game just is not worth it, I can see how some people may like it, but I would definitely recommend renting it first. With the money I made from selling this game, I was able to purchase Super Monkey Ball 2, so it all came out okay in the end.

Great game 5 years ago.

Mario games have always been known for their breakthrough gameplay and innovation, too bad that these are things that seem to be lacking in Mario's newest platformer "Mario Sunshine". Just like many other modern platformers, the old treasure hunting formula has gotten stale and repetitive.

The levels go something like: pick up a few coins, accomplish a goal, get a star, once you have enough stars, you unlock a new level, etc. Granted, there's a lot to do, but searching for things gets boring after a while. Another thing that bugs me is the camera which you constantly have to move around to get a good view of Mario and his surroundings. The game tries to fix this by showing you Mario's silhoutte when he's behind a wall, but it doesn't make up for the bad camera.

One of the more refreshing qualities however are the straight-up old-skool platformer levels where all it takes are quick reflexes and perfect timing to make it through, it's too bad there aren't enough of these. Also the bright and colorful graphics and tropical landscape provide an original atmosphere as opposed to many platformer cliches like "the Ice Level" or "the Fire Level".

Some of the goals in the game are simple, while others can be pretty challenging (and sometimes even frustrating). And while a lot of them are original, a lot are just the same goals found in every other level.

This would be a great purchase for any nintendo fanboy, but I'd reccomend everyone else to rent it first.

Too repetative

OK, the game looks nice, and Mario can do some nifty moves. But then what? What's up with playing the same world/level over and over again?? Sheesh. I got bored after a couple of hours, although each world is well-made. I think the special fantasy block-style courses are the most challenging, which saves the game from becoming a total disaster. The gameplay is more platform-like and also faster and more difficult than during the normal levels. Beware if you have a short fuse though! Its good that they make the gamepads so durable. ;)

So if you like games where you solve little puzzles and collect items for small rewards, this game might be for you. If you are looking for a more classic super-mario platform-like game, I wouldn't shell out the money needed to buy this game. Instead I'd take a closer look at Zelda - the wind waker. If you disregard the cartoonish look, you'll soon find out that they've made almost everiything else about it right. Astonishing gameplay!

The ultimate Mario game

I can't believe some of these reviews say this game is terrible. Ignor them! Anyway, Super Mario Sunshine is very fun and enjoyable. Mario is taking a relaxing vacation to Isle Delfino. But when he arrives, the place covered with sludge and graffiti. To top that, you are the blame for the mess! Thats when the adventure starts.

The game graphics are spectacular, exspecially the water. The water shows reflections of nearby objects and slow, rolling waves.

Mario has a partner in this game. Its a robotic, water blasting backpack named FLUDD. You can drench monsters and boost up in the air with him. But there are times when you get FLUDD stolen and you have to go through obstacle courses without him.

Oh yeah, Yoshis are back too. You can ride on the little dinosaurs and they spew juice at enemies. The Yoshis have to eat fruit constantly or soon they will dissapear and go back into thier eggs.

That's my short and sweet review. Buy this game!

Good game, but with flaws (rounded from a 3.5 star)

Super Mario Sunshine was one of the launch titles originally included with the Nintendo Gamecube, and represents the hallmark name in the Nintendo lineup. Mario is back armed with "FLUDD," a backpack device that spews water to knock out enemies, help Mario hover, rocket you around the screen, or even propel you sky high. It's a versatile tool that's lots of fun to play around with.

The graphics (particularly the water effects) in this game are outstanding. Water ripples as it should, splashes just right, and never ceases to amaze. The colors are vibrant and exciting, and there is no lack of eye candy in the game.

By the same token, sound is good. Voice acting is hardly standard in Mario games, but you get several scenes of it here. The rest of the talking is gobbledy-gook accompanied by on screen text, but it is still well presented. Music is atmospheric and hardly epic, but it serves the purpose.

Game play is also diversified from other offerings with a full arsenal of moves at Mario's disposal. He can bound off walls, balance on a tightrope, and climb cages (in addition to the aforementioned FLUDD moves). It's fun just to run and jump around levels with Mario trying out moves.

So why knock the game down? Well, to start with, the camera. As you run up against walls and obsticles, the camera all too often gets trapped behind a wall, or cannot rotate where you want because of something in the way. So it becomes a chore at times to get your view pointed where you want. Also, there is a high frustration factor here. I appreciate difficulty, but when a 20 minute trek inching your way to the top of a structure is nullified by a slight misstep that finds you back at the bottom of the level, it goes from hard to just annoying.

Finally, I found there to be a slight lack of variety in levels. Although the levels are beautiful as I said, there are not many, and you simply play them 8-10 times over with only slight variations for different challenges.

All in all, this is still a good game, and I recommend it for a GameCube collection. If nothing else, it's Mario for crying out loud! But it is not a game without flaws, and you should take note of them so you know what you're getting into! At the current price ($20), it's worth it, though.

The greatest of the Mario series yet!

I absolutely love this game! The fact that you have the option of rocketing around with a water pack completely stuns me. The graphics aren't top notch, but WHO CARES?! The story line is great, but for some of the puzzles, you require a strategy guide. Mario's main goal in the game is to clean up the terribly large graffiti mess left by Shadow Mario. Play through the game as Mario meets new friends, solves puzzles, and returns the Shine Sprites to their rightful place at the Shine Gate!

Nintendo has done it again!
