A disappointment

Okay where to begin. First, lets talk about the game bad camara view which gets in the way of gameplay from the very beginning. The game becomes very frustrating when one can not see where their jumping, or who there fighting. Second, the game lacks innovation. The game really doesn't have anything new here. At times the game really seem rush. Its alot like Mario 64 but just doesn't meet the gameplay standards of Mario 64. Finally, the graphics of Mario Sunshine is ok, but could have been alot better for a GameCube format. The game is very bright, and is a terrible pain on the eyes. I personally was getting headaches playing the game. In conclusion, Super Mario Sunshine just doesn't compare to classic games like Mario 3,
Super Mario World, and Mario 64. Unlike the classic Mario games, Super Mario Sunshine is not a game I would be running back to play again. Do better next time Nintendo, and give us a Mario game that brings back the old magic of Mario games of past!

The Next Installment in the Mario Legacy

Clear and simple, any kid who tries to play Mario for a while will become engrossed in it and like it. Mario once again delivers a very good platforming experience with a few new advances.

First of all, the water pack. With the FLUDD added to the game, all new moves such as the rocket or hover nozzle allow for dynamically different gameplay than Mario 64. For those still looking for the vintage Mario moves such as the patented triple jump and other such moves, many of them have been included. You can still do the smash thing from mid-air, as well as a few others, although a good deal of your time will be dealing with the FLUDD.

For those from an older generation, many of the original Mario's moves have been added once again. You can ride Yoshi once again, as well as the way that Mario could climb on fences. As for the game's difficulty, yes, a child could beat Mario at a young age, but it would be very unlikely that they would finish everything. The addition of blue coins to collect to buy shines(like the stars from M64) add much more depth to the game. This as well as a few levels without the pack and other challenging levels make sure the entire game is not as much of a breeze as Luigi's Mansion was. Although these events are not required to beat the game, they are fun.

As for gripes I have about the game? They are few and far between. I would have liked to see more control while swimming, although the current control sufficed fairly well. This and a few of the tried-and-true enemies such as goombas and koopas, but the new enemies are interesting as well. Although the graphics aren't perfect, many of the water effects as well as some of the nicer textures do well.

Overall I'd recommend this game to all ages, as it is very fun and not something that you'd be likely to put down unless you were dying of starvation. It's that good.

Very fun

This is my first GameCube game and it's pleased me a great deal. There hasn't been a good Mario title since the Super Nintendo days. Sunshine has revived the series and has brought a whole new level of enjoyment to fans. The style of animation and great level design is the true star of this game. Everything, even the dirt, it beautiful. You'll feel like you're playing a hand drawn animated movie. Two big down sides to this game are the controls and poor camera movements. The control can be very frustrating. Mario doesn't always shoot when you want him to shoot and he doesn't always jump where you want him to jump. They are bearable but they could have been better. The camera is just terrible. You have to fight with it all the time. Not only do you have to control Mario but you have to move the camera yourself also. This can be very difficult during battles or tough situations. While this is an extremely delightful game, it's still not perfect. So out of a perfect 5 I give it:

Graphics: 5.0
Sound: 5.0
Control: 4.0
Fun Factor: 5.0

A work of art, but not without faults

First of all, the graphics. It is simply astounding. I always thought Nintendo did "water" better than anyone (i.e. WaveRace 64). And this is a good thing considering that the setting is a tropical isle. There is a stage, where you swim in the coral reef, fishing for coins. Being an avid snorkeler, I was awestruck by the fact that I felt like I was swimming in the ocean while sitting on my couch. Of course, there will be distractors, who simply cannot get over the cartoon-like graphical nature of the game. But this is more of a matter of taste. You need to take it for what is instead of wanting 3-D rendered polygon environment and characters.

Having said all this, I still think that Super Mario 64 is a better game. I have read that the worlds in Sunshine is much bigger than those in 64 but I somehow never got that feeling. They are about the same and there is less worlds in Sunshine not to mention the lack of variety. For instance, Mario 64 had 12 different worlds (ice, water, desert, lava, sky, etc.) In Sunshine, all the worlds, more or less, are somewhat similar. With the introduction of the water pack, you can do so much more with Mario in Sunshine, but I would have preferred the variety in the worlds over controls.

All the complaints about the camera-work is valid. You do have to micromanage to get the best view constantly. I often found Mario hidden behind buildings and it got frustrating at times. But it is a small price to pay for such an enjoyable game. Finally, I also didn't like the fact that for every world, you had to play a specific episode to get a specific sunshine (the main thing you collect through out this game). I found this a little bit restrictive and less challenging since you pretty much know what you need to do for each episode. In 64, you were basically thrown in a world and you had to go find the 6 stars hidden throughout the world. But again, this is only a minor pet-peeve.

Over-all, this is the best game for the Gamecube so far (until Zelda comes out).

clearly addictive

I am really glad that gamecube games work on the Wii. You can buy a bunch of cheap used discs at your local gamestop as well as a used controller memory and you're good to go since it all works with the Wii with no downloads necessary. I absolutely love this game, and it is definitely a huge improvement on Mario 64 which was already a great game. The graphics are wonderful and it's just a lot of fun. Enjoy.

Addictive!

I just reordered Super Mario Sunshine from Amazon. I originally bought this in 2004 after shoulder surgery. I played it through once and loved it but I found all but one blue coin. I could never figure out where I left that last coin, so I used a guide the next time for a little help to find all the blue coins and played it through a second time and think I like it even more. I gave the game to a friend after that thinking I would never play it again. Now, I've found myself missing being on Isle Delfino and all the gorgeous colorful worlds and catchy music!

The graphics and gameplay are amazing! I think it is one of the most creative games I've ever seen. I mean the red coin hunts in the pinball machine and bottle--who thinks this stuff up? Yes, some of the puzzles are very difficult and I must admit I probably played some levels 30 or 40 times before I completed them (how many times did I fall off into the vast unknown on some of the puzzles?) Each time I had to start over I would scream "NOOOOOOOOO!", but they were so much fun I just kept trying until I got my shine sprite!

This may be a little challenging for young children, but for older kids and adults, it can't be beat. Not to mention that there really is little if any real violence in this game--blasting plants and flowers is about it. If you're not easily dissuaded or frustrated, you will LOVE this game.

I Love the Mario games

I'm new to rating but not new to Nintendo's Mario games. I feel this is such a colorful beautiful relaxing game. It's really cool that Yoshi is back in the game, seeing he was not in Mario 64. Also for the first time Mario isn't stuck in the castle so you get dfferent concepts of what Mario has to overcome. And also Mario has more interaction with different character within the game. I read other raters who said this game is so easy. I'm not a game expert, but I find this game very challenging for both children and adults. If you're thinking about buying this game I reccomend that you do. I read some reviews before I got the game discouraging people from buying it. I bought it anyway and am so glad that I did. Hopefully this review will help make your decision.

Excellent game to chill with, but easily overlooked

This game was an excellent Mario game. Although it was nothing revolutionary, you can think of it as a vacation from the Mario games, which it really is. This game has 120 stars and although some are kinda dumb, most are very fun. The boss fights are quite fun too. One problem i had with this game was how the final boss behaved in this game. Well ill let u play and see the ending of the game to find out. Some people complain that this game is too hard or the camera angels are messed up but i say - BLAH!! - what are you thinking? You can change ur camera angle a full 360 degrees with the C stick and if ur still having problems you just stink, no offense. If they made this game too easy, people would say "Gamecube is kiddy its games are too easy like mario sunshine", well guess what, this game is not easy, but its definitely not a hard game either. Also people think that this game is supposed to be the direct sequel to mario 64 but that is completely WRONG. This game is just the vice city of mario. It is a mario game, but like the theme (as i said earlier), it is a vacation from the series. The true sequel to Mario 64 will be the game tentatively known right now as "Mario 128", which Miyamoto (the genius developer of Nintendo), said will feature the real revolutionary features. So enjoy and relax this game, admire its charming design, its mildy challenging but fun puzzles, and its hint of mario magic. And dont listen to those reviews where parents say this game is too hard, unless you wanna buy this for your 5 year old. In that case, i still gotta admit that this game is still not that hard, u just gotta help ur kids out with a few stars. And for anyone who thinks that this game is too kiddy BLAH to you too. Its a mario game - thats where the charm of it comes from. The only thing i found too kiddy was, again, the final boss and i mean how be behaved.

Possibly the Best Mario Game Ever!

SMS is amazing. There's nothing else to say. Its gameplay is flawless, its music and setting infectious. The variety of objectives, and the amount of these, is amazing. The game is a joy to play again and again, and it has stunning stylized graphics and water effects. I couldn't recommend this game more. The only way this game could have been better is if the camera wasn't as problematic as it is. Otherwise, there are no problems here. One of the must-have games on the GameCube.

Mario is back with Peach and an entourage of toads including Toadsworth have come to Isle Delfino to relax and unwind. At least, that's their plan...but when they arrive, they find things have gone horribly wrong.
According to the island inhabitants, the person responsible for the mess has a round nose,a thick mustache, and a cap...what?But...that sounds like Mario!?The islanders are saying that Mario's mess has polluted the island and caused their energy source the Shine Sprites, to vanish.
Now the falsely accused Mario has promised to clean up the island,but...how?Never fear!Fludd, the latest invention from Gadd Science, Inc.,can help Mario tidy up the island, and to take on bad guys. That's what the game is mostly about. So if you buy this game I know you'll like it.
