Get it out the doorI

Out of 20 years of playing video games, I have never played a game that sucked worse than this one. Not that it locks up. Heaven forbid that the agony be interrupted. This game is crammed with inconsistencies. Over and over, the shooters, although obscured behind objects, have the ability to shoot you when you are unable to shoot them. At distances, and many other instances, the sights appear to be locked on but when you repeatedly shoot, the computer opponent cannot be brought down. The left hand keyboard controls are hard to find and easy to get lost in. I believe this software to be reflective of a "get it out the door" philosophy that pervades Engineering today. Get it out the door so we can start making money and the hell with the customer. I am so outraged; I will support nothing that UBI has anything to do with ever again. If I were Tom Clancy, I would hang my head!

Sniper pistols

I was a big fan of UBI Soft Ghost Recon which is why I am so disappointed. What happened?! This is easily one of the worst games I've seen come out of any company, but to come from UBI Soft, is a real shock. The only saving grace for the whole game is that unlike most others, when you play a level a second time, the enemies are not in the same places and react differently. It keeps the game from getting old. What does make the game very old, very fast, is the AI. I eventually had to give up with using AI teams because they never fail to blow themselves up with thier own breeching charges, ignore terrorists 10 feet away from them or walk around corners and give away my postion. But by far the most frustrating part is what I have come to call, the sniper pistol. Here is the scene: You've spent 20 minutes clearing the level of all terrorists. You sneak up on the last one. He's 100 meters away, you have an unobstructed shot and he's looking the other way. You draw a bead on him, centermass on his back. You fire a shot but instead of dropping, he spins, kneels and fires a single shot from his pistol, killing you instantly. Eventually I resorted to god-mode just to get some entertainment out of the game. We deserve better from UBI Soft.

Not happy with Ubi

First off, do not buy this game if you do not have an "Uber Computer" (ex: 2.4+ Ghz Processor) with at least a 4x AGP videocard with 64 Meg memory. I am using a 1.4 Ghz and the gameplay is choppy unless I drop all graphics options to at least medium and wipe out the "enhanced audio". That's in addition to closing all background processes except Explorer and Systray. This game is supposed to be "graphically optimized for Nvidia graphics". Gee... I thought I had one.... Multiplayer? Don't even try unless you want to deal with the following: 1) Game hesitates for 40 - 80 sec at regular intervals even on LAN games (the main reason I bought it). 2) Online play requires you to enter a 16 digit code every time you want to play. I suspect the hesitation is due to the game trying to contact the online server to update game servers and/or trying to determine you you have a legit copy of the game. My suggestion? Don't buy this one unless you have a 3 - 4 Ghz processor, 8x AGP 128M Nvidia graphics card and 1G physical memory. And no... I am NOT happy with this game. BTW, if you do buy this game... Don't install the 1.4 patch they offer. It just makes the game even more graphics hungry. Single player is "kinda'" ok.

NO save game function!

Bought this after playing (and loving) Ghost Recon Gold - the first Clancy game I've ever played. Learning curve was steep coming from games like Return to Wolfenstein, Quake, Half-Life etc. but well worth the effort. Raven Shield looked to have so much promise but although the graphics and gameplay are excellent, the AI is real flaky. The previous articles written here cover well the good and bad points so I'll tell you what drops this from a four to a two star game for me - NO SAVE GAME ability.

Nothing like playing the same mission over, and over, and over because you make a single mistake and a hostage gets shot - hence the automatic mission failure. If there's a way to save I haven't found it and that's a game killer for me no matter how well it shines in other areas. If this doesn't bother you then by all means buy it, otherwise I'd recommend Ghost Recon and/or Sum of All Fears.

Who is smoking the cheap stuff?

Is it the developers or people who paid $60.00 for this repetitious and unimaginative piece of garbage?

Although I agree that there has been an improvement in Graphics, the game is plagued with problems much like its predecessor. It seems the developers haven't improved the game at all. The storyline is very similar to the two games before it and layout of the missions seems almost identical, as well.

In single player missions your team members seem blind and AIs can take you out with a 9mm from 200 yards with a single shot. Ridiculous.

I got this game at Boxing day sale in Canada for 20 Canadian dollars. If you did spend more than 20 US than you are smoking the cheap stuff:)

does not come close to previous R6 titles

I have purchased and played every Tom Clancy title to date, both R6 and Ghost Recon. Noticed huge decline in release quality when UBI took over and released GR. It took a mod by the name of "Cold War" to make GR good.

Raven Shield was released with a CD Key verification issue from hell. I bought the game day one and had to switch from DSL to Cable to play MP. After playing for over a month now I have noticed the AI is not as good as previous R6 titles. It offers nothing new and in my opinion less that previous titles. The maps are weak. Yes, the graphics and sound are good, but I would expect them to be.

Bottom line, if you love first person shooters and especially Rogue Spear, prepare to be wowed at first, and bored a month from now. I am now waiting for Swat 4: Urban Justice.

Something is rotten in the state of Raven Shield

ok lets go.

Gameplay-.

First of all you cant save during a mission(wich are very hard by the way) so you are forced to replay the same boring scenario over and over.
If you lose a specialist during a mission, you dont get any replacements, so you could find yourself short on snipers and such later in the game, or replay a mission and try not to lose any men wich is almost an MISSION IMPOSSIBLE.

Missionplanner-.

There is also an overly comlicated "mission planner" but mostly i just use the default mission plans that never work and usually end up in a mission failure.

Recoil-.
Ok i play alot of games with high recoil, and i am all for realism but this is to much.
The recoil on the handguns, smg and rifles is ridiculus.
And to combat that, they have an inbuild aimbot(sjibbí i can let the computer aim for me).

TEAMMATE AI-.

There is no command for your team to cover a direction from wich enemys are suspected to come from.
The game is designed to make AI teammates cover all directions. Thus half the team is looking 12'o clock while taking fire from 6'o clock.
The Teamate AI is very frustrating, as they teamblock you and get you shot in the back, while they cover the wrong directions.

Good bits-.

The graphics are very good and that is always a bonus.
But the game itself is not so good.

Rex Pax.-

Not bad, but not what I want as a big fan of R6 & GR

This game is a few steps backwards compared to Rogue Spear, depending on your point of view. There are a few nice new things- standing/sitting/prone positions (a la Ghost Recon), better graphics, and well, I can't think of much else.

* You can attach ONE accessory to your weapon. This means that you do not have the standard options that the M4 SOPMOD offers spec-ops folks in real life. Want a scope and a silencer? Sorry!
* Many commonly used accessories are missing.
* Tango AI acts stupid when a smoke grenade goes off. It allows you to walk right up to them and shoot them point blank.
* There is still no "wobble" when shooting first person. You try holding a 9 pound assault rifle stable when standing- you will wobble some! 1 point lost for realism. "Reticle bloom" is a poor substitute in my opinion.
* No richocets. Another point lost for realism, and this is supposed to be realistic 1st-person close quarter combat.
* You've still got snipers with no real places to use them effectively. You can snipe as well with a scoped MP5 as any other rifle.
* If I shoot someone in the wrist with a .50 cal JHP round from an M89 rifle, it doesn't blow their hand off and they return fire
* If I shoot someone in the foot a few times, they die
* There are several major steps back from Rogue Spear:
- Planning mode has less features and is much less effective
- Elite level is too hard and unrealistic. I find it impossible. Forget camo, they will always see you. And they will shoot you with 1-shot deadly accuracy from a 9mm handgun at 200 yards when you're wearing body armor.
- The AI of the NPC team members SUCKS. Your men will always get killed (especially on elite level), so you're better off just going it with 1 guy. I mean, they stare at walls sometimes, they cover areas that are already clear, and they simply can't deal with the tangos. They don't seem to see anything that isn't directly in front of them.
- You can now only have 3 teams instead of 4 (and less operators I think)
- No replays anymore!!!
- Very minor- I can no longer listen to MP3s in the background while playing

So my major problems with this game can be summarized:
* Gameplay is not as enjoyable as Rogue Spear (or Ghost Recon for that matter, or probably even the first R6!), although it certainly uses more CPU...
* The developers focused too much on redoing the graphics and other cosmetic things, while the "meat" of the game suffered. There are few noticeable improvements over Rogue Spear, and many retracted features.

What I want to see as a long time R6/GR fan:
* More Realism! Not in how the faces of the tangos look, but in the way combat is carried out.
* More effective AI, and more effective planning phase
* More freedom with weapon configuration, as this is very important
* More effective sniping capabilites

Don't buy this if you haven't played Rogue Spear.. Go buy it instead. Unless you're just into Multiplayer games and don't care about tactics or realism.

not as good as Rogue Spear/GR

Ok, I've been a VERY addicted player of all the RS games + Ghost Recon. These are almost the only games I have played for years, and I have played them constantly. Since this is the sequel to Rogue Spear, here's a quick comparison. They basically rewrote everything, and left out features that were in Rogue Spear. The result is better graphics, but more of an arcade-style action game. Using strategy (creating plans) is not useful, because even on the easiest level your computer-controlled teammates...get shot constantly. They sometimes turn and stare at a wall or cleared area instead of where the threat is. After playing the first several maps, I've noticed a boring consistency-there are no interesting scripted actions carried out by enemies. Their AI stinks (although they will 'nade you pretty effectively). I'm still amazed that they'll run out bravely into the line of fire, walking over a huge pile of corpses only to join the pile shortly. The AI stinks equally for both "good guys" & "bad guys." I've read that some of the maps are used for more than one mission...You still can't really customize your weapons. You can only use one weapon accessory, as opposed to the REAL SOPMOD M4 which Spec Ops can configure however they wish. Ie. You can't put both a scope and C-MAG on an M4. No flashlights either. No option to use Aimpoints, Reflex scopes, or ACOG 4x scopes. You can't use both high-cap mags and a silencer on pistols (or rifles for that matter). There is still MUCH lacking in the way of realism.. IMHO its gotten worse since Rogue Spear. You can't shoot through chairs and other paper-thin objects. ALL doors make noise when you open them (easily heard by nearby people). Shooting a person in the foot 2 or 3 times will kill them. Computer-controlled snipers (teammates)-evidently don't believe in the "one shot one kill" creed. Characters can run around for hours with a machine gun held at ready position without ever getting tired. In summary, the game seems more geared towards arcade-style "spray and pray" gameplay and MP games (because the AI doesn't matter when all the players are human). It really annoys me that the game industry does this...they always dive for the better graphics/animation and rewrite stuff instead of IMPROVING existing code. There are very very few new features in RS3 that I've noticed, and I'm disappointed. I would have been much happier if they had reused the pre-gameplay (briefing, planning, etc) stuff from Rogue Spear, and ONLY focused on adding new features and improving gameplay. I should not have paid...for this. There are plenty of bugs. I would wait for a patch or two to come out, then pay less for the game. Or just play the MP demo, since the game...in SP mode anyway. All that said, the graphics/animation are pretty nice...

Needs lots of Work before retail

After reading a few of these very optimistic reviews, I thought it was necessary to give a more balanced view of the upcoming game from a less biased source.

Rainbow Six (RvS) has been hailed by many, like Global Operations (GO) several months before, as the next Counter Strike (CS) killer, the game that will draw so many bleary eyed kids away from their aging online experience in CS. Well, RvS has got the good, the bad, and the buggy.

Bugs - The MP demo was release months ago, when the original game was suppoed to ship. The game has been delayed mulitple times, and it's launch pushed back 4-5 months total now. When the demo was released it was an alpha release at best. The bugs in the game are everywhere, gun bugs, ladder bugs, sight/scope bugs, most found it difficult to log on or even play for more than 5 mins without one of the games thousand bugs deriding their fun. A patch or two later, we now have a slightly tolerable beta on our hands. Basically, the MP demo for RvS is one of the worst, buggiest, sloppiest demos i ever played.

Graphics - Built on the new Unreal engine, at first the graphics look very nice. Take a look around more though and you will see bland interiors/exteriors, repetitive patterns and skins, etc. Take a look at the detail and graphics of Americas Army (AA), RvS doesnt even compare to the beauty of AA, and they are both on the same engine.

SP vs. MP - If you are going to buy this game, get it for SP (Single Player), not MP (Multiplayer). SP will probably be where this game shines if it does, the MP experience is pretty lame. Only 6 total MP maps, just plain lame for a MP game. No MP game should go gold without 12 maps min. 3 maps are already out for the demo, so that means you're 50 bucks will buy 3 new maps. Yuk. Not my idea of a long lasting game or a good deal.

Weapons - The good thing about RvS is the wonderful selection of weapons. When you see dozens of ARs, SMGs, Snipers rifles, you will be psyched. Well, they take the fun out of this too. First is the horrible perspective on the weapons. They look odd, ugly, poorly detailed. Look at a game like GO, the weapons models done over a year ago blow RvS models away. Also, some of the guns in the game so outbalance any other, you wont choose any other weapon but the G36. Basically, almost every player online now uses nothing but the G36, it so dominates all other guns it makes them all useless.

Gameplay - This is the last area where RvS just falls apart. RvS cant decide whether its a CS clone, or an arcade shooter. There is a one-shot-one-kill mentality, but everyone runs around at full speed with weapons in full burst. So you die in the first 30 secs, you sit there for 10 mins waiting for the next round. RvS wants to be a stealthy tactical game, it is not. Its a run and gun shooter pretty much, so expect it when you play online.

Overall, at this point RvS gets a 5 out of 10, and that is being kind. Maybe with tons of work, somehow the retail release will push it up to a 7 out of 10. The MP is lousy, stay away, just play the demo, dont waste money on a game that wont offer anything more in retail. If you just want SP, then this may be fun for you.
