Technically Correct

This game is great from a technical point of view. If you are not familiar with boxing strategy, chances are you will have problems palying at the higher difficulty levels. Just as real boxers have their individual styles and strategies that set them apart from others, you too must develop your own style and stick with it. But, you must also learn to adapt to the fighting style of your opponent.
The music absolutely sucks for this game. I like rap, but this is severe overkill. A very bad judgement call on EA's part. Selling out is unattractive when it is so painfully obvious.
One point I would like to make is this: you CAN NOT have a realistic boxing game and call it KNOCKOUT KINGS or FIGHT NIGHT without including Mike Tyson. It is insulting to real boxing fans to exclude the meanest , toughest, most instinctive and devastatingly effective BOXER to ever don a pair of gloves. My advice to EA would be to pay Iron Mike a decent price to include him. BOXING sucks without Mike Tyson, whether it be in real life or in a video game. That would be like creating a NASCAR game and leaving Earnhardt or Petty out.Why is it that EA chooses to include Earnhardt Sr. in their games so they can cash in on a dead man, but not include TYSON who is still alive? But, that is my own biased opinion. There has not been a credible heavyweight champion since Mike.

This is quite possibly the best boxing game ever! (once you get over the nostalgia of Mike Tyson's Punch-out...) The graphics are sweet even though video games are still plagued by the ongoing difficulty of generating the human face; but what the game lacks in graphics it more than makes up for in control of your boxer, it is amazing! Each punch becomes completely intuitive and impact varies based on multiple factors (positioning, transitioning, fatigue, etc.) I love a game that lets you advance in the ranks against a myriad of opponents while increasing your skills via training routines on the side. In the spirit of tradition, you get to choose where you want to advance specific skill levels. Each match is totally unique with regards to AI strategy and opponent attributes, so you have to change your own strategy to compensate; you can't just keep doing the same moves and that rocks huge becuase games with glitches suck. Anyway, the coolest part might be how much can configure your own boxer to look like you; so many attributes at your disposal. Or even better, you can configure the boxer to look like one of your friends and then let him get pummeled on easy levels against non-opponents... It's hilarious to watch a computerized version of your best friend just sit there and take it in the face over and over by the equivalent of a Glass Joe until he drops and gets counted out, hahahaha it never gets old. If you like boxing, or you hate your friends, you have to get this game...

Almost perfect

I've always had a soft spot for boxing games, because they are the only fighting games that don't have annoying fireballs or gigantic swords or out-of-this-world moves. The problem, until now, has been that boxing games are button-mashing events, with little strategy. Thanks to the analog-stick control, Fight Night heralds a new and amazingly solid control systemt that rewards patience, strategy and skill over speed and luck. The control is very good (though could use some tweaking; where is the option to clinch?). The game's career mode is quite solid, and very addictive.

PROS: Amazing control, solid gameplay, depth. Great AI: opponents have distinct fighting styles; while one will stick and move, another will go toe-to-toe and pummel you with hooks. Good graphics and decent sound.

CONS: Difficulty level can vary; while some fighters might have the same ratings as you, they are usually able to absorb much more damage and dish out more than you, even with an even number of punches thrown. It's necessary for a challenge, I suppose, but it gets frustrating when you get to the top 10 boxers (Marciano, Norton, etc). I HATE the soundtrack to this game. While it is true that EA has decided to "urbanize" their sports title and score them with urban hip-hop beats, the music in FN is really pretty poor. At least they could have gotten some real rappers/artists. This leads me to my next point: there is a disturbing feeling of homogeneity in this game: it's ALL about hip-hop, and it can get a bit much. More disturbing is the lack of variety in fighter models: most look like bad caricatures of Hispanic gangbangers. How about some racial variety EA? Where are the white/Asian/Non-stereotyped black or latino fighters? My last criticism lies with the mini-games you use to boost your attributes between fights. Some of these are both stupid and frustrating (heavy bag, for one), yet there is NO way of practicing them, and since they are the only way of getting better, it can become annoying.

That said, this is a very good game, and probably the best boxing game ever made! If you have patience and are a fan of pure fighters, pick it up!

excellent game but needs a few minor improvements

This "total punch control" thing works great. It takes some time to get use to it, though. After a few fights and training on target dummy, I was able to punch in the right places that I wanted to. The graphics are great, too. I do have a few complaints. A few of the opponents move around the ring so much, it not only gets frustrating, I get really dizzy chasing them around. Another part of the game that needs to be reworked is that when a fighter gets close to the rope, the rope disappears. I can't use the rope. The physics of the rope aren't worked out like it could have been. Too bad. The upgrades you get with your fight money are all about glitz--like new shoes, new gloves, mouthpiece, trunks, etc. Overall, I've been enjoying playing this game. But, I could see myself getting tired of it soon especially since there isn't an xbox LIVE feature in it.

Great game, go buy it

The graphics are amazing and the cuts and bruses really show up. They have great names in box like Ali, Sugar ray leonard, and since I am from Philly BERNARD HOPKINS AND JOE FRAZIER. Great game play. Career is fun but once you knock down someone they get up in a 8 count. If you do it again they get back up.

Cool boxing game to play one of the best

This is game is very exciting and fun to play, it takes a little getting used to because of the controls, and the way things have changed since Knockout Kings. But it very fun and a challenge to play the computer also, while building your character. Just one other thing, this game is not Xbox live so i dont know why you have it under the online games.

Great change from Knockout Kings

First off let me say those people that complain about the Total Punch Control being way too hard...CHANGE THE CONTROLLER SETTINGS THEN!!! Total Punch Control is hard, but you can get the hang of it. It took me a while to get it, but ultimately it's kinda cool. And even so, you can change it so the regular buttons are the punches.

Either way this is a good game. The career mode is cool and has enough to keep you going for quite some time and the difficulty levels are good enough for a challenge. I started on easy to get the hang of it and it was easy at first, but as I started to climb the ranks I actually had some tough fights. I've now moved on to medium and it's definitely tougher.

All in all it's the best boxing game out there and just give it a chance. If you don't like Total Punch Control, just change the settings.

play as yourself and fight through the clubs

Fight night 2004 gives you a total punch control system. Witch is an awsome experience because you actually feel like your really beating up your fighter. For example if you push the right thumb stick right and up, you give your opponent a right hook. If u push the right thumb stick down and slide it up to the left you do a left uppercut. You will have to try it for your self.
Fight night 2004 gives you a 20 year career mode to fight your way through the ranks to the top for the belt(you fight 2 or 3 fights a year). You can create your own boxer for career mode or use a pro boxer that already exsits like Ali or Jones Jr. You start out fighting throught the clubs and then as you go u earn money from your fights (Tip:CHOOSE YOUR FIGHTS WISELY). Also when you progress you earn knew ring entrence themes, ring entrence effects, signiture punches, ect...
It is truly the boxing game of the year. Addictive and fun. So go out there and give them the old 1-2.

Better Game Than I had Previously Thought

I had previously written a review proclaiming Knockout Kings 2002 to be a better game than Fight Night 2004. I was wrong. At the time, I was unaware that you could turn off the total punch control system and punch with the buttons... making the game much easier to control. You can also run the total punch control and buttons simultaneously which offers the ultimate aresenal of controllable punches. A lot of people have complained about the "annoying" rap soundtrack. That can be turned off in the settings menu and saved so you'll never have to hear it again. Those are the 2 biggest complaints I've heard about this game, and that's the fix.

One Great Boxing Game!

I got this game for Christmas of 2004, and I've had a total blast with it. The graphics and sound are top notched from EA! You can either fight with the large Fight Nite lineup or create your own boxer. So I created a 6'10 heavy with a mohawk and tatoes and named him the Irish Bull. You can unlock rings, equipment, and buy upgrades at the store. This came is so much fun, but there are two things I don't like about it. First for Xbox there is no online play, so you might want to get the one with Benard Hopkins because there is. Second the computer autimatically retires your boxer from career mode, when it sees fit. My Bull was 48-2 and had defended the title 11 times in a row. The computer retired him at age 42 for no reason. I can still use him in exhibition mode, but not in career mode. You'll luv this game and its a ton of fun!
