There is a good story line on this game. However, you could play the whole game and skip the cinematic scenes. They don't really tell you anything relevant that trial and error won't do for you while playing. I would buy it again. You probably wont play it again after beating New York Minute accept for the special finale. If you liked the rescue of Morpheus, then you will like this game, 100.

The best shooter I have have played in a long time. When I first popped Max Payne into My X box, I was amazed. It has very good controls and awesome Gameplay. Anyone who doesn't like this game must have no systems. My only wish is that it was for the greatest system Nintendo Gamecube. I sometimes feel annoyed because my hands start feeling sore with the X BOX controller. This game is a must for people who have X Box. If you don't, go out and buy one and a Max Payne video game for it. Peece out. Jason

Great Story, Mediocre Game Play

This game is a good buy for those who enjoyed Syphon Filter, Silent Hill or Alone In The Dark. The good feature of this game is the narrative. Unlike a lot of other story games, the plot and writing in this game aren't clunky and awkward. It unfolds like a graphic novel with cleverly worded chapter titles and film noir-style narraration. The auto-save feature kicks in after every chapter. It saves you from all that annoying "typewriter ribbon" ... in the Resident Evil series, keeping the pace crisp and cinematic.
Max is a likable fellow with good motivation for doing what he's doing. He's genuinely funny sometimes, too. When's the last time a character in a video game made you laugh with a good quip? My problem with this game is the actual mechanics. Max doesn't move as precisely as Lara Croft, but there are times in the game when he needs to. Note to game designers: if you're going to make him jump through moving laser beam mines, Max's controls need to be a lot tighter. The targeting system is weak, also. All you get is a dot which is centered on Max's POV, controlled by the right toggle. This is frustrating if you're spoiled by Gabe Logan's targeting system in Syphon Filter. ... I guess Max is only a cop, not a special forces guy, but still. There is a slow-motion bullet-dodging mode (a la The Matrix) to aim with, but I found that a little hard to use. There aren't a lot of puzzles in this game. Most of the problem solving is tactical or fairly simple lock and maze problems. There's some trippy dream and drug sequences that are unusual and cool, in the vein of Silent Hill. What I liked the most though, was the game's fast pace, which is very refreshing if you're used to Resident Evil or Tomb Raider where you can wander around for hours without knowing how to proceed. So, in short, if you like games with good story and character, this is for you. It's an okay game if you're into collecting different guns and blasting baddies, but not as good as Syphon Filter.

Great Story, Great Graphics, Great Gamplay

Hi. Im just writing in to say that this game is one of the best FPS ive ever played. The bullet time feature just kicks. When you're in it, everyting slows down except your turn speed and max's reflexes. Also, I would also like to point out that this game should not be played by ne1 under the age of 12 because of the adult story-line. Also, I have a problem with the game: often the lighting with the xbox makes it difficult to see stuff. But that's okay. This game has great graphics, better than halo's. This story has all the G's. But for those of you who are wondering if they should buy this instead of halo, I would say depends. Halo is very different because of the view and the way it is played. Toss a coin and decide or decide whether you want sci-fi or urban. That's my humble opinion. **bows**

Payne's great with infrequent XBox freezes

Max Payne is a great game. Graphics are good and the novelty of bullet-time (matrix style) is cool. The sound is "ok" in the fact that it was recorded at many different levels and doesn't eq all that well. The game does freeze infrequently on the XBox... for instance.. I hit a stage where an auto-save occured and I incidentally was changing guns at the same time.. needless to say the XBox hung, I had to reboot and I lost my save game. When compared to HALO this game is not as good in the fact that it's replay value is limited... though I really did enjoy this game and would recommend it to any die-hard gamer. Thx.

Great Game!

I played this game at a friends house on Xbox....It is awesome. I hihgly recommend it. It has the same controls as HALO and it is sooo freakin' long! But that makes it fun!

Don't believe the hype

Max Payne was a success for one reason - the outlandish amounts of media coverage it received prior to it's release. It received such feverish attention for one reason - Bullet time. But as it turns out, Max Payne [is bad]- for many reasons.

Bullet time is a gimmick that is cool for the first 10 minutes, but almost seems designed as a coverup for the otherwise awful gameplay. Add this to the absurd level design (bad trips and tightropes, anyone?), shoddy graphics, those ridiculous comic-book cutscenes, the contrived plot... Max Payne is garbage. And to think, the ripoff that they call an ending leaves the door open for a sequel. Lord help us.

CLERIFICATION FOR CURIOUS GAMERS AND PARENTS

To be honest, I'd never heard of this game before. It turns out that this is a great action game that could easily be paired up with classics like Goldeneye, Metal Gear Solid, and Perfect Dark. The graphics are nothing short of stunning, while there is a rich story line to go with all the blood and gore. The levels are complex with real-life looking cinema scenes and keep you on the edge of your seats because it makes you feel like you're Max Payne himself.
WARNING:Parents if you are looking for a birthday present for your children let me warn you now that this game who definately dircted towards mature audiences. If your child wants an action game I would recommend games like Halo for now.

BOTTOM LINE: This game was definately designed to impress audiences. It is rich and up-bringing and presents the ultimate gaming atomosphere. Suitable for all if not most action fans!
