A Solid Game

4 Rating: 4, Useful: 2 / 2

Max Payne is a very good game, but basically the only reason is that the creators came up with a innovative "ace up Max's sleeve" called BulletTime. This slows down everything as if it were slow motion and Max can aim real-time while the bad guys cannot. Very cool once you actually try it. However, it does feature repetive gameplay and the easier difficulty is too easy. Here is a look (1 awful to 10 great):

Gameplay (7.5):
The movement, camera functions, weapons, aiming, shooting, and BulletTime are all well laid-out and easy to master. The levels/boards to get through are somewhat repetitive and the cheesy storyboards with even worse dialogue can get annoying. No multiplayer (big drawback).

Graphics (8.0):
Just very good all the way around; nothing spectacular and nothing to complain about. Solid.

Replay (7.5):
Good replay value until you complete the mission, which is not that difficult. You will want to sell it after that unless you cannot part with the BulletTime.

Overall (7.0):
A cool game while the novelty lasts. A few tweaks, such as adding multiplayer and re-doing the dialogue, could have made it so much better.

Pretty Swell

I really can't say anything more about this game that hasn't been said before. However, I will reinforce the fact that the game is a lot of fun to play. There are only two problems that I have with the game. The first is the controls. Its a pain to try to turn around or run and shoot at someone who is higher up than you. The second thing is the dream squence part of the game. To say they are supremely annoying is to put it mildly. I suggest putting your television on mute when playing these parts.

By the way, for those of you who write reviews about it being too violent, what on Earth did you expect when you picked up a game with a MATURE RATING. Sure its bloody, but thats why the people in the video game industry carefully rate these games. If you are worried about, lets say, your "son's developing brain", perhaps you should buy him a book instead of a video game (sorry kids). If you are worried about it turning your kids into serial killers, maybe the root of the problem really is your bad parenting and not a silly fictional game. Better yet, why don't you stay on your hippie compound and quit annoying normal people.

Max Payne ,the best game ever!... besides HALO

When I first bought this game, i had a bad feeling that this was going to be a really hard ...game, maybe I was just hungry. But to my suprise, this is my 2nd favorite game ever next to the legendary HALO. Even better than that old, fat plummer, Mario and little gang. (No offense) But this game RULES!!!!!

The controls can also relate to HALO. They are pretty hard to use at first, but sooner or later they become a piece of pizza that Mario would love to get his grubby fat hands on. (No Offense Again) What is also tight is the bullet time gameplay which allows you to play in slow motion for about 10 seconds.

One day I started playing the game at 5:00 p.m. and didnt stop playing untill 4:30 a.m. Just to put it plain and simple, If your about to buy this game and you feel funny, your just hungry, so buy the game or else someone like Mario will snatch it and take his fat butt home to play it instead of you. You will also still be hungry because he will take your food also. So watch out for that fat grubby tub-of-goo and buy Max Payne.

"Let the gun do the talking..."

I just recently bought and beat this game, and I've been asking myself, "What the hell took me so long to get this game?" My boyfriend (I'm a girl gamer) rented Max Payne when it first came out for Playstation. I watched him play it for a while, didn't understand the addiction, and didn't think anymore about it. Recently, I purchased an Xbox, and Max Payne was one of the first games I bought. From the opening scene, I was caught. Max Payne is a must for gamers who enjoy noirish style action/rpg games as opposed to fantasy-style games. It has that gritty feel to it that can actually put you in a somewhat somber mood. The storyline isn't the deepest of storylines, but it has a nice solid feel to it. He's a man on a mission; you won't forget that. You'll get an array of weapons ranging from a lead pipe to --my personal favorite-- a sniper rifle. You interact with a colorful cast of villians, but the gunplay does get repetitive.

Here are a few reasons you might not enjoy Max Payne:

- I'm a blood and gore type gamer, and while there is blood in this game, it isn't as realistic as it could be in my opinion.

- Some of the voice acting is downright awful.

- The game isn't all that challenging even on hard. (New York Minute is a different story.)

Overall, I enjoyed playing Max Payne. It filled the need to shoor stuff. If you're having a bad day, nothing's better than playing Max Payne and taking out your frustrations. :)

A Definite Platnium Hit

Gameplay(10/10): I thought the gameplay was excellent and very
addictive. This was the first Xbox game that I
have played so it took me about 20-30 minutes
to get use to the controllers and the buttons.
Once i got the controls down I felt sorry for
all the bad guys I came across.
Story(7/10):I totally understood the story in the beginning....
but then it started to get out of control. I didn't
figure outwhat was going on until the end of the
game. Max is an ex NYC police officer and he goes
and discovers that his wife and newborn daughter
were murdered. He goes around the city to find out
who was responsibile for his loved ones murder.
Graphics(9/10):I have a PS2 also and I bought this game for the
Xbox because the graphics looked a little more
crisp compared to the PS2.Of course the graphics
cannot top Splinter Cell or any other new games
out right now. But the graphics do satisfy.

I recommend this game for anyone who likes Grand Theft Auto...I guess it is some what similar. As long as you enjoy excellent graphics and gameplay you should enjoy this game. Maybe you can understand the story better than me!!! Hopefully Max Payne 2: The Fall of Max Payne will live up to this game or surpass it.

Killer - Matrix style

I've never writen a review for a game before, but this game is some serious business. If you liked the Matrix, this game is definitely for you. It's got a great story board to it (...) It's a definite buy!!!

In my opinion, better than PC version

I tried the pc version and have the xbox version. Quite frankly i thought the xbox version was by far superior. The pc version on a cutting-edge pc looked as good as the xbox version. However, it did have the irritating jagged edges on objects that the xbox version did not have. Also the xbox can showcase some particle effects that the pc just cannot handle due to many of its limitations. I only wish i had hdtv to get max resolution & widescreen. Suprisingly, I found the controls on xbox much easier than pc (most shooters control best on pc, not this one!) This game just plays better on a console. For those who havent played it at all, it is a great game and a must buy for every serious gamer. I strongly recommend this game on any system, but if you had a choice between xbox & pc & ps2, i would definitely recommend xbox version. I havent tried the ps2 version but from the reviews i've read at gamespot, it has long load times, inferior graphics, and slows down sometimes during gameplay. Many people complain about the replay value but i thought this game was worth keeping. Note: Heed the mature rating! Besides the shooting, it does have a little bit of mature content. Play it if you know you are mature enough to handle it. Its definitely not as bad as Grand Theft Auto III though.

plenty of violent action

4 Rating: 4, Useful: 2 / 2

This game has taken up plenty of my time due to the engaging storyline, good graphics, and intense action violence. I would give it 5 stars except for 2 things 1: there is a problem with the save, when I use it and then beat a level instead of playing the next level I get started from the begining of the level I just beat. 2: jumping is a straight up pain in the a__. When you have to jump from one ledge to the other if you don't time your jump exactly perfect you fall and die and have to do the whole area over again, and you wouldn't beleive the frustration this causes. Over all though I'd say this is one of th most fun and addictive games i've ever played.

Bullet time and bad script

Remember the Martix? Remember wishing that they would make a game that lets you slow down time after you saw the Matrix. Well at least I did but this game does just that. I'm sure i'm about the 50th person to tell you that bullet time is awsome. It's awsome to get in a big huddle of enemies, slowing down time, and watching those bullets fling by Max's head. Bulett time isn't the only thing that this game has going for it though. It has good graphics, even though Xbox is capable a a tad better, but it doesn't look any worse than the PC version. It has an adult world for Max to shoot through. It is kind of short but you will probably want to play it again 1 or 2 times. It does make you feel kind of evil for playing at times, but i guess I can't really put that down as a bad thing (some people just never feel guilty). The levels are very detailed.

MAX DEALS OUT THE PAIN!!

5 Rating: 5, Useful: 2 / 2

All we can hope is that XBOX picks up ALL the Rockstar Games (e.g., GRAND THEFT AUTO 3, STATE OF EMERGENCY, etc.). MAX PAYNE is an entertaining thrill ride. Definitely worth picking up, and here's a few reasons why:

>> Funny, intense and articulate story boards. Formatted in classic, adult comic book fashion.

>> Superb AI. Great visual and sound effects. Killer gun selection.

>> Ground breaking, slow-motion gun-play mode. Embodies a classic John Woo film.

>> Great plot twists, colorful characters. Gets a little complicated at times, so pay close attention as the game progresses.

With the exception of Halo, this is the best action, role-playing game yet released on the XBOX; guaranteed hours of rollicking good fun. Hope to see more of this genre in the near future.
