a real treat so far

I just picked up my copy today--I know it's a port from the PS2, but so far I've played through 2 1/2 hours without even knowing it. And that's a GOOD thing in my book. The VR missions in sneaking and weapons handling are very important, especially since I haven't played MSG2 before. And since I've played the Splinter Cell version, I can say that these are two different games--SC relies much more on real, practical sleath using shadows and darkness for your cover, the extra moves of Sam Fisher, etc. still there's room for both.

Great gameplay but LONG cut scenes

The Metal Gear Solid series is famous for its intense gameplay. Metal Gear Solid 2 adds to the series with combat, stealth, strategy and intrigue. You are Raiden / Snake, part of a covert military group.

The graphics in this game are just amazing. The movements, surroundings, lighting are very well done. You can peer around corners, crouch down, crawl along to sneak up up enemies. The realism isn't quite as nice as some other games out there - it's not "gritty" - but it's close.

The sounds fit in well with the game. The background music is moody and suspense-filled, and the ambient noises of footfalls and doors opening and closing all reallyd raw you into the game.

The gameplay is great, in that it's not a blast-em-up button masher. You have to think about your surroundings and work to take out your enemies in the most efficient way you can. You can replay levels to find new and better ways to get through the level.

Where the game drags is in the PLOT. First off, the plot is more like a soap opera, with all sorts of really bizarre twists and interpersonal conflicts. Second, this is supposed to be a stealth-trained guy, a la splinter cell. Instead, he gets these INCREDIBLY long discussions while he's in the middle of a mission! They should have had briefing sessions BEFORE each mission that you could skip, and then when you were actually in the mission you should just do it. There could maybe be an "on line encyclopedia" you could go to if you got stuck - but to keep deliberately interrupting the game for these dialogues was poor.

Still, you can always have a book nearby to read while those dialogues go on - I hate to skip them just in case something important IS said in them. Usually nothing is, but you never know.

If you can last through those cut-scenes, the rest of the game is really enjoyable and well worth playing. It's a lesson in patience!

It Captures Perfection

This game is so good. If you liked the first Metal Gear I recommend this. Everybody says it has to many movies and not enough gameplay, but they are wrong. Instead of complaining about the movies they should actually sit down and watch them. The movies are verrrrrrry impressive and improve this game a lot plus they dont take up a lot of the game. The only thing that bugs me about this game is the codec that beeps you a lot. But other than that excellent game. Whats better than hiding in a box and hanging from railngs to escape from enemies. Oh yeah this game is better than Splinter Cell.

Utterly ridiculous story + great gameplay = MGS2

I'd heard that MGS2's story was a bit overblown, and having played through Substance, I have to agree. There's more plot twists than are reasonable, and frankly, some of them are so ludicrous it's hard to believe the designers aren't insulting my intelligence. It'd be like if the Sixth Sense had three more plot twists, and none of them were plausible, or intesting.

However, despite that, MGS2's a really fun game, full of little details that make running around in this world worthwhile. The gameplay is at least identical to the original MGS, plus a good deal of interesting additions, allowing you to hold up your enemies, or knock them out, rather than killing them outright. On top of the original game, there's several hundred VR missions, which while not nearly as interesting sans story elements, provide a reasonable amount of time-wasting fun. There's also a number of extra missions featuring Solid Snake, in case you didn't get your fill of Snake in the story mode.

Overall, a neat game, but it could have been worlds better had someone just told Kojima after the first couple plot twists that he was really getting out of control.

MGS 2: SUBSTANCE

Finally the MGS franchise comes to the XBox proof to all that that PS2 is becoming outdated. This version of MGS2 will be like 5 games in one. First of you'll get to play the entire game as Snake or as Raiden. Second their will be the snake tales 5 different adventure each with its own different ending.Third theirs the VR mission over 300 different mission that take place in real time I.E. if its 8:00 PM on your Xbox its night time in the game and if its 6:00 in the morning its daytime in the game. Also their is going to be a ton of camio apperances from previous MGS characters. And let us not forget the 100+ alternate missions. On top of that youll their is going to be at least 5 different cosmtumes snake can wear and its seems their might even be a first person shooter mode in the vr missions. Ive already pre-ordered my copy of this game and i suggest you do the same if you enjoyed playing MGS:2 sons of liberty youll love MGS2:substance.

Coming out for PS2 as well.

I would like to point out several things wrong In other reviews that are incorrect. The graphics DO take advantage of the Xbox. Now, It is Bump-Mapped and more Anti-Alised than before. Meaning it's clearer and sharper. Also, this game let's you turn blood of. Splinter Cell is a bad game. It has Bad Controls andbad storyline MGS2:Sub.is MUCH better. It has an excellent story and perfect controls. This game is notjust a straight port. It includes better graphics, character selection(Radien, who you played as 95% of the time in Sons of Liberty is a little wuss while Snake is totally cool.) VR missions, 5 new snake tales with new storylines, alternative missions, and the skateboarding mini-game. This game has it all and will be an excellent addition to your game library as well as mine. It is going to be released for the PS2 and PC in a little bit also. This is a sweet game. I hope you buy this game as soon as you can! Have fun!!!!!

It's all Good!!!

Hey everyone,
we have to respect the PS2'ers for their system and games and they should do the same for us Xboxers. I haven't played SOL but I have seen video's and screenshots and this game looks amazing. I can't imagine what it's going to be like having the Snake Tales, alternate missions, 300???+ VR missions, able to play different people with different uniforms. I am an xboxer and I have to say that this game, I think, will kick... and be #1!!!!! If it weren't for the PS2 and Hideo-San, we would not have this marvelous construction of code and visuals. Long Live PS2 and Xbox

Do not get splinter cell much better Ive done the research
