UNREAListicly Disappointing!

2 Rating: 2, Useful: 3 / 4

The original UNREAL was a PHENOMENAL GAME - one of THE BEST ever created. I can understand that following in those footsteps could only be hard. By, at least, ATARI could had tried.

This is NOT a game that has anything to do with the original title. I could not get involved, couldn't care less about the characters or the story. It took me all of two afternoons to finish it off and was a great disappointment since I was a great fun of the first and couldn't wait to get my hands on the "sequel" - which it is not.

The graphics are good but nothing close to groundbreaking. The surfaces are nice, the shadows non-existent and the muzzle-flashes totally annoying.

If you have an older system that cannot handle the latest FPS releases, I would advise FAR CRY or RED FACTION I instead. Even graphically older, the original UNREAL would be a much wiser choice.

I've only played it for a few days so far. Glossy, polished, finished quality. So far, haven't encountered any bugs (except the ones you kill in the game). Typical storyline, with a few twists, but nothing yet that stands out as being "ground-breaking".

It's probably one of the most visually stunning games out. I say probably because my computer (fastest thing going a year ago) doesn't have what it takes to run the game with all the eye candy enabled. Regardless of what it says on the box, you won't realize the game's full potential without a killer computer.

P4 1.2 GHz or greater recommended? More like 2.4 GHz
384 MB RAM recommended? More like 512 MB
GeForce 3 or Radeon 8500 recommended? Maybe, but should have at least 128 on-board RAM
Check this one out... 3 Gig of hard drive space. My install currently uses 2.4 Gig when the game isn't running.

Still... even with a bland game setup, the game runs and looks great.

For god sakes...

Ok here's a comparision for ya:

Serious Sam :- Decent graphics (it's the Q3 engine ain't it?). Big guns. Big enemies. No plot. Run forward, kill, continue. every1 loves it.

Unreal 2 :- Superb graphics. Big guns. Big enemies. No plot. Run forward, kill, continue. every1 pans it.

Am I missing something important here...

California Blonde

Unreal II is much like the stereotype of a California Blonde. It is absolutely beautiful, but not much going on upstairs. The game undoubtably contains some of the finest graphics available, and it appears this is where the developers invested most of their time and money. The game is plagued by poor AI, and out-of-place voice acting. All this is tied together with a poorly written script. Still despite these major annoyances, the game is still fun in its own mindless rights. If your looking for a new First Person Shooter that requires minimal thought, and your only interest is running and gunning, then this game is for you.

Buy it for XMP

The free downloadable multiplayer portion of this game called XMP is worth twice as much as what they are asking. It's highly addictive and great fun. I haven't even bothered witht he single player yet. If you like mulitplayer this is a must have.

You get what you pay for, usually...

I really enjoyed the fast intense action of the original Unreal, but even more so Unreal Tournament. Now we have Unreal II: The Awakening, finally! The graphics are satisfactory and even pretty cool, but that's a given. I enjoy adventure games as well as 3d shooters, and I liked the original DOOM series because it at least followed some story that made sense. So does this game, which involves a few different types of quests and situations.

There is minimal challenge except for a few parts, which are incredibly hard unless you turn the difficulty to the easiest rating.

However, it is a sore dissapointment for fans of fast action and high-paced 3d shooter games. Also, if you are looking for anything particularly new or interesting here you won't find much with the exception of turrets and force fields that you can use to defend an emplacement from attacks. You are also given the ability to command a half dozen troops in a couple scenarios, which is more fun than the rest of the game IMO.

Story seems pretty well thought-out for a 3d shooter storyline, but just doesn't hold my interest. I think the entire story is really a lame and depressing tale of a gullible space marine.

There is no fast paced action. You can't even run very fast and the CPU's AI is strange. At some points you will get jumped upon (face-first, even) before you can respond.

Sluggy Slugfest Non-Action-o-Rama

I really loved Unreal. I'm also really impressed by Unreal Tournament 2003. But I cannot believe what a poor product Unreal II: the Awakening is. While I can see that they needed to give you more storyline than previous FPS games, I simply find the characters boring, the dialogue pretty trite--yes, even for a macho First-Person Shooter--and the gameplay terrible. The animated cutscenes, while pretty, tend to go on too long and usually involve a long shot of a ship landing or docking, or someone walking up a staircase.

It's really like UT2003 and Unreal II were built on 2 different engines: they play like night & day on my system, a pretty decent PIV 2.0GHz, 400MHz FSB, with 1GB of RAM. Movement is sluggish, weapons work so-so, and although Unreal II gives you the ability to "vault up" onto those crates and boxes that are so hard to negotiate in other FPS games, you still feel like you're wearing weights on your ankles. I can play at any resolution or level of settings and the gameplay is the same.

There's also bad cropping of the map - I've run across "invisible walls" that are in the middle of walkways, enemy combatants that get wedged into the landscape and jog in place, and objects that look as realistic as any 4-year-old FPS from the days when PIII was cutting-edge.

I'd suggest you consider Unreal Tournament 2003 (and playing as one player with a lot of bots if you want a single-player game) instead of trying to slog through the poor performance of this game. The only reason I'm giving it 2 stars instead of 4 is that teams of AI bots tend to behave better than the bots in the original Unreal. This doesn't redeem the game, but it makes me see that they tried to bring something to the sequel.

Meh... Coulda been done a lot better. A LOT better...

Game had interesting weapons and amazing graphics... but I just don't understand why the game creators didn't stick with the original Unreal storyline. Unreal2 had nothing to do with the first Unreal (which is an awesome game, btw).

XMP can be a fun multiplayer... but there are hardly any working servers!

Now that this game is cheap, though, I'd buy it just for fun.

Unreal graphics...so-so game play.

I literally just finished Unreal 2. First and foremost I have to say this game has *amazing* graphics, top to bottom. The shadows, reflections, distances and so on are top-notch. On this level, this is a fantastic game. If you have a computer which is on the high-end side of the spectrum, you are in for a visual feast.

However...the game itself is rather so-so. First of all, you never really feel that each mission is critical to the game. It feels more like a bunch of non-related tasks. Don't get me wrong, some of the tasks are quite fun, however it is really clear that the thrust of this game is all about the graphics...not the game play.

Between missions you dock for a breifing, however the dialog between the other two main NPCs is just *bad*. Too many one-liners, and macho-insults. I like campy where needed, but this game is based on campy, and you never feel totally engrossed.

Unreal 2 is an alright FPS, but unless you have a solid graphics machine, you won't find too much to love.

Replay? Well, let's just say now that I am all done with the game, I uninstalled it right away.

I may play this game again for the visual eye-candy, but not for the game-play. In fact, if I do re-install it, I am sure I will play a level or two, and remember why I unistalled it in the first place.

Unreal II presents some of the best graphics in the business but at a price. The textures are very detailed and clear. There's a LOT of lighting in this game, and much of the lighting is dynamic. The metal surfaces look like--well, metal! Also, much of the art is very nice as well, and this game includes a level in a forest at night that is I believe the best looking level I've seen in any game. The price of all this splendor is that even a high end system often struggles under the load. I use a Dell Dimension 8300 equipped with a 3.0 GHz Pentium 4, 512 MB RAM, and a Radeon 9800 graphics card, and the game still locked up fairly often! Sheesh, what must you do to run these games smoothly?

The sound in the game is good too, although not exceptional. The music is OK, but not as good as the music in the original Unreal.

A common complaint I've seen about the game is that it is too short. I must have put more than ten hours into this game until completion. So I cannot complain too much about the length. Believe me, there's plenty of cool stuff in this game, so don't worry too much about the length.

Luckily I experienced no problems at all with bugs! How often does that happen with a computer game?

To sum it all up, Unreal II is definately a good game. It's not the "Second Coming" that a lot of previews hyped it up to be, but I cannot say I'm disappointed at all. If you like shooters, run a high end PC, and don't mind single player only, then Unreal II is worth a shot (no pun intended).
