A fun FPS? You bet!

Let me say that I did not play the original Unreal Tournament.
Nor did I play Halo, Half-Life, Doom 2, Serious Sam, Medal of Honor, Castle Wolfenstein 3D, etc. etc.

Why?

I hate First Person Shooters and always did.

Then one day I was over at my cousin's house and he showed me Unreal Tournament 2003. I was hooked and bought my own copy the next day. I've played it quite a bit, especially since it's possible to play a match in 5-10 minutes as opposed to the multi-day to month-long commitment needed to play Galactic Civilizations, Civ 3 or Morrowind.

I like that it has a good following on the internet, and that two free expansion packs have been released by the developers. I also heard that the developer is giving a $10 discount to owners of 2003 who purchase 2004.

What happened UT designers?

I have been into gaming since the original Pac-Man when I was a kid. I went through a series of games. Kings Quest (the original computer game), Mario (nintendo and computer, all of them), it went on 'til I found Tombraider. I found that I loved the originality, graphics, maps as well as the moves and abilities of a realistic, wholly believable and life-like adventure game. I purchased Unreal Gold on the premise of that--3rd person shooter adventure. The graphics were utterly believable and beautiful. The environments were stunning and awe inspiring. The characters felt very real to me and the game even had plot and character development. It felt like a whole movie with the plot and characters in this way. It was completely unavoidable to not get caught up in the cause of this person (you) and the unbelievable carnage and destruction of her own human race that is happening right in front of her. The logs and messages from the killed humans who have been freshly and sadly dismembered made this very real to me. Vaguely, kind of, like Aliens 1. I loved it beyond belief. (Little did I know how very linear it was and what amazement I was now infor). But I wanted more. I had to have more. So I purchased Unreal Tournament. I loved the feel of being a 1st person shooter. The movements. The possibilites were endless with the way the game was; not linear. Anything could happen. Each game match within the game was different. I found I liked the competition of playing against actually skilled computer bots. The speed at which I had to move to beat them was like nothing I had ever experienced. It was like real time. The set and the human(bots) had shadow and light and folds in their shirts, etc. that created a feeling of depth that I have never before exerienced on the video environment. It was like a realistic set, with human like bots that had wonderful characterstic and totally human responses to my actions in the game. Totally believable; so real. Totally like being there, to me. The music was inspiring and very appropriate to each of the matches or maps and in creating the feeling of true competition (and wonderful, gritty bloodlust that surprised me as well, initially. LOL.) It was just totally unbelieble. I played it for hours days, months. Then I played it again. And so on. Unreal Tournament had a hard core fan in me, for life. I breathlessly waited for the release of Unreal 2003. I couldn't imagine what kind of realistic, awe-inspiring and enriching fantasy they had come up for me this time. I loaded it and since I have a GeForce 3 it was fine. I have played Quake III. I did not enjoy it (unfortunately) since I really don't get off on cartoony characters that don't feel real to me: wish that I did. To my complete surprise these same cartoony characterswere on my Unreal Tournament. The maps were not in a 'real' environment anymore, either. They now also seemed similar to Quake and not designed in a way that kept some small (like closed corridors and wonderful perches on walls, strange tunnels, bridges, etc) places as well as some beautiful open spaces to make a truly wonderful and rich sporting arena in which to snipe, flak, rocket, etc. in any believable, 'earthly' (as in physics and motion mechanics as well as ergonomical) way. It was and is a fine game, on line, for some people. And that is fine. But it is not UT, Unreal Tournament. I believe that the designer(s), for whatever reason, left this company. And the new designer did not or could not stick to the original theme of Unreal T. Unreal Tournament had in the beginning like all wonderful pieces of art, some kind of idea in the designers head that sparked the creation of UT into that mother CPU. The design theme of Unreal should have been stuck to. Not just for the sake of keeping to the premise of the design and the beauty of the original designers thoughts and fantasy processes. But of course as I said UT has, and still has :), a loyal fan base (and that at the very least should make sense in order to keep the loyal market already in place for these big wigs making the bucks).

I am hopefully awaiting the release of the next Unreal Tournament. And if that doesnt pan out, then I very very very dearly hope that 'THE' designer comes out with another "UT" similar game from another manufacturer.

Intense action...when you can get it to work.

If you like first person shooters, this game is fantastic. I bought because of how much I liked the previous version.

Unfortunately, I have never played this game without it crashing on me. I have upgraded to the latest patch (2166) and upgraded my video card to the latest driver. I have also installed the XP Service Pack 1 which has the DirectX 8.1b upgrade. I have every graphics setting set to the lowest setting possible. I am running a Pentium 4 2.53mhz with 512 megs RAM.

It crashes all the time, telling me I may need to upgrade my DirectX driver. Sometimes it doesn't even start. I haven't started with support yet, but it's aggravating nonetheless that i should be having so many problems.

I would stay away from this game. I know several people who own this game, they all have similar problems, but not as many. That's probably because they have newer graphics cards.

In short, this game is really buggy.

Not bad

Good: A lot of technical advancement in the game graphics and general play over the first version of Unreal Tournament.

Bad: The graphic art, sound and music that define the look and sound of the game has definitely not been improved upon. This is of course a pretty subjective judgement. I'm sure a lot of people will like it just fine. And it's a blast to play of course. But this game won't totally replace the first version for me anyway.

I have gotten my hands on the beta!!!

I have gotten my hands on the beta by a fellow member of my hotline server. He gave me the first official beta of the game, and now, after writing one review, I am here to tell you about the beta.

First to start out with, the graphics are outstanding. Don't expect them to be even close to Doom 3, but they are great! Very nice details, and outdoor terains look great for just the beta! The controls are great and the response is superb. The music is a bit annoying after a while (it plays techno music repeatively over and over again over the sound effects). They will probably do something about this in the real release of the game.

The physics are the best part of this game, to my opinion. You never die the same way twice. It is that good! The guns have different effects in different ways. For example, the shock rifle goes for a pushing motion, thus having the victim being thrown to the floor, and then blown into bits. The lightning gun, though, goes for limb removal. If you hit the victim in the arm, he will have no more arm! You shoot him more after he's dead you will find the body parts flying everywhere, one by one. The assault rifle, riddles tiny wholes in the body, making guts and blood go everywhere.

Now, remember folks, that this is 5 stars for the beta. If the beta was this enjoyable, you can expect the game to be even better on release. I can not take away credit for any of the down sides, for that is what a beta is for.

The AI was acceptional, but remember that this is a beta.

There is no multiplayer, so I can not give you the info on that.

The other complaints I have had about this game is that the same voices are in this game. You will hear the male one, male two, (and that is it in the beta), just as they were in UT. UT's voices were great, but they need to change.

UT2003 has been what I have expected. It was a great joyride to senseless violence land. It will suck precious hours away from my life like the previous version did.

This game has taken 1st person shooter backwards

What happened to all the great, somewhat realness we found in unreal tournament? This game has taken us backwards and in my opinion might as well be called Quake IV. To the creators: WHAT WERE YOU THINKING??? Bring back good old fashioned unreal tournament in the next version you make, and second: quit designing them for high end video cards. That is the biggest turnoff for buying this game.

Virtual Gotcha and some more

I'm an old-fashioned casual gamer since the 80's. I've always preferred passive, strategic games and simulators over the newest multiplayer shootemups. But...

I got irresistibly curious after all the hype and publicity surrounding this game. So I downloaded the 97+MB free demo and I tell you right now, this game has made me radically change my mind about online gaming. "It's so kool!"

The first thing that got me hooked to this game was the simplicity in getting started right away. I loaded it and immediately was surrounded (and humiliated) by online assassins.

It wasn't exactly the graphics that surprised me, but the playability. The movements are smooth, easy to control, the environment is crisp and clear. Be careful though, performance depends on factors such as system specs and connection speeds. The current MINIMUM requirements are Pentium III 500mhz. I assume that you need to have a faster system a good video accelerator and probably (read again, probably) a high-speed Internet connection (cable, DSL) to take full advantage of this game. That's the good thing about the demo. Although it's a huge download, it's free and you can determine how it works on your system.

Initially the interface was a little complicated for me since I'm not used to the newest 1st person games, but the designers really made a good effort to make the interface intuitive enough to make it simple and avoid frustrations.

You can play deathmatches, team play, flag capture and other variations. I prefer death matches, it makes a very entertaining and quick virtual gotcha; you actually feel the adrenaline rush as you crouch, strafe, jump and shoot for your "life".

The program has a customizable weapon priority feature where you can determine wether to arm any weapon you pick up during the game based on its priority. If you are carrying a high-priority weapon, you will keep it armed if you pick a low priority one. This is a nice strategic option that everyone should take a look to improve their survival rate. You can also manually select your weapon, of course.

What can I tell you about playing online, there are thousands of people playing around the clock, so it doesn't matter if you want to play at 12pm or 3am, there's always someone available to be challenged. Or you can setup your own LAN at home and have a blast.

I think my review hasn't even covered 10% of the game (I'm playing a demo) but if this just 10% or even 50%, it is definitely worth a future purchase.

A definite winner.

An Unreal game!

I never played UT, so this is very new to me, but this game is a blast. I keep hearing how awesome the graphics were, and though they are very good, I think Wolfenstein & MOHAA are better. What seperates this game from them is the fast paced action. And I do mean fast. This may be the fastest paced game I have ever played. There are several cool maps, unique weapons, and tons of action. The single player mission isn't very hard. It seems to me that this was made just to teach how to play, but it was still very fun. The last match is incredibly tough. You also have instant action which places you on one of the maps against 4 or 5 computer players. It is fun, but not very hard. The hardest thing for me is figuring out the secret moves you can do after you have collected some adrenalin. I'm still having trouble with that. The multiplay is really good. I was surprised how little lag there has been. I have not had trouble getting into a game yet and it hasn't gotten so laggy that I had to find another game. There's alot of gore & bad language and the music and sound effects are very solid. You can play deathmatch, team deathmatch, capture the flag, and bombing run (I don't understand that name since you are trying push some kind of ball through a portal of some sort. Kind of lame if you ask me) so there are plenty of playing options and there are already new maps coming out. If you want plenty of action to get your adrenalin pumping, this is your game.

The new Unreal falls far short of the old one

Boring game play and lack of fighting detail. Weapons stink compared to the old Unreal Tornament. DON'T WASTE YOUR MONEY LIKE ME. IF YOU LIKE THE OLDER VERSION STICK WITH IT.

What in the world were the game designers thinking when they put this junk out to the gaming community???

Wake up call... Super-rig,or Pentium II,THIS GAME RUNS GREAT

Simply put, THIS GAME IS AMAZING. Let's face it, anything from here on out in the Unreal legacy is going to make Game of the Year. I played this game on a 1.7ghz system, with a 64bit Geforce card, and guess what... IT LOOKED AMAZING. Then I played the game on my older system... Only 500mz and an old 32 bit ATI card, and guess what... IT LOOKED AMAZING! Even still, i played it on my buddie's pentium 2. NO VIDEO CARD, and only 64 megs of ram. Guess what... LOOKED AMAZING!!
There are too many reviewers/doom-sayers out on the net, dampering the hopes of gamers by proclaiming that you'll need a super-rig and one hell of a graphics card to enjoy this game. I am here to tell you THAT IS NOT THE CASE AT ALL. This game boasts the extremely low requirements of 32 megs of ram, and a 450mhz system. Now I'll admit, with a better system, you would be able to crank the resolution and frame rate, etc... more little details. But i'm telling you, even with a low-end system this game looks great, and is ... addictive as hell. Get's the adrenaline and blood-lust pumping even more than its predecessor.
