a diamond in the rough

the thing, a game based off of the film of the same name circa 1982 is one of the only games to use the namesake of a film while not only doing the film justice, but being a fun game on their own.

the numerous direct connections to the film bring the environment full-circle. memorable locations, items and audio from the film bring the game over-the-edge in terms of staying true to the film, something many video games based off of films have completely failed on.

besides how well the film is tied into the game, the game on it's own is a great game. the fear and trust system that you share with your comrades works wonderfully, adding a true feel of 'team-work' while the random infections and transformations add a new level of shock when one of your most trusted comrades bursts out into 'the thing' and hungers for your blood.

that brings me to the monster design: wonderful. every monster is as bit aesthetic as those featured in the film and every monster has it's own dash of originality as you question what being(s) 'the thing' had come from.

my only complaint is this: you cannot jump. others have complained about 'aiming at the ground' with the flamethrower, which i have no problem with. simply press 'a' to trigger first-person view.

a+ game, exceeded my expectations.

Good game but room for improvement

This game should have taken advantage of the Xbox platform and beefed up the graphics more. This would have added so much to a game with this type of setting. Regardless, this is still a decent game but it is difficult and requires patience and determination. It would have been nice to have more save points throughout, since it is a real pain to go through the defeat of some nasty just to die a few seconds later by one teeny mistake. Another problem is the controls/camera angles but what else is new with games of this nature. An interesting story line and increasingly challenging game makes this one worth a try.

Very disappointing

I was excited about the release of this game for the Xbox but I have ended up very disappointed. Here are a few reasons why:

1. Overall the game is choppy, and I got stuck with an unmovable character within the first 5 minutes of playing.

2. I tested another character to see if he was "a thing" and I got a negative result (he's still human). Ten seconds later he turns into a thing. The test is supposed to be a 100% reliable way to test your teamates. The game just turned him into a thing to get rid of him so I would have to enter the next area alone. He was never infected.

3. I come upon an area where you can hear a nasty monster on the other side of the door. I go to look through the window... And the screen turns black, and then I am suddenly inside the room, with the monster, and the door out is locked. Basically forcing a situation on you... again.

It is not fun to have these illogical things forced upon you, when the point of the game is to figure out how to stay alive and keep your teammates alive. If the game is going to force them to die no matter what you do, then why even try?

There are more reason to not like this game, including the interface and manuals, but I can get by those if the game kicks butt. It does not.

Worth RENTING...

If it were me trying to decide what to do with this game, I would rent it. Because like (some) Tomb Raider games once you beat there is not much to do and its not all that fun to play (beat) more than 2 times. The reason I say this is because there are puzzles to solve and stuff like that, which is fun the first 2 or 3 times and then it gets old. And the controls are a little messed up, and sometimes it can get confusing. So if you think you would like this game you should rent it. If you think 99.9% you'll EXTREMELY LOVE IT sooo much then its worth buying.

Pretty good

I was surprised with this game. I actually enjoyed it better then Dead to Rights. Some parts freaked me out when the crab things jumped out at you and some of the levels you just have to run to get to a door to get some ammo or health. Overall I enjoyed this game very much.

Blood, gore, and more!

Blood, gore, guns, horror, and aliens. You have to admit games like this rule! All it needs is multiplayer and cheats then someone call a doctor this game knocked me dead. Just as good as the movie!

A decent enough game. But I don't really think the ads really reflect the true nature of the gameplay. I thought there would be so much more to dealing with the possibility of an "infected" team member. I also don't really buy into the story angle that the game takes. I am a huge fan of the film, and I was hoping it would be modeled a little closer to that storyline. Instead, huge liberties were taken by Vivendi Universal. The Graphics are stellar, and the gameplay is really well done. I suppose I just wish I enjoyed the games storyline a little more.

Outstanding!! A must for XBOX!!

I have this game and it is more than worth the wait. It has action, suspense, strategy, and spinetingling fear all wrapped into one. This is one of the best thought-out video games I have ever seen. Buy it, you won't be sorry.

Xbox only hope

This game truly showes the potential of the xbox. It's interactive gameplay and story will do for the xbox what Metal Gear did for Play station
