Grand Theft Auto: Liberty City Stories (2005.)

INTRODUCTION:
When it comes to video gaming franchises, no series is as famous, or as infamous, as the classic Rockstar Games series Grand Theft Auto. With an objective that focuses on succeeding at crime, and some of the most questionable content ever seen or heard in video games, this series has become the target of many anti-video game violence groups. When you hear those game-hating prick senators whining about violence in games, this series is a big target for them (damn them all to hell!) But none of those bastards know the truth - the game series is an excellent one! The series has come a long way from its Playstation One infancy, and it shows through in every installment of the series, on every console. This series has always been fun to play, so you better believe gamers were excited to hear the game was arriving on Sony's Playstation Portable. How does Grand Theft Auto: Liberty City Stories measure up? Keep reading, and you shall see.

OVERVIEW:
Rockstar Games released Grand Theft Auto: Liberty City Stories in the Fall of 2005. It's a traditional Grand Theft Auto game. The game is rated Mature for adult situations, language, violence - pretty much anything that can get a game an M rating, this game has. At this time, the game retails for about fifty dollars American.

REVIEW:
I've always loved Grand Theft Auto games. They're just so damn fun, because you get to do everything you'd be too afraid to do in the real world. And above all, they make the experience an extremely entertaining one. Liberty City Stories has proven to be no exception to this gaming tradition. Read on and see how the game fares in the different areas it offers.

-THE GOOD:

-THIS IS A TRADITIONAL GRAND THEFT AUTO GAME, IN THE TRADITION OF THE CONSULAR ONES RELEASED IN RECENT YEARS. If you've played Grand Theft Auto 3, Vice City, or San Andreas, you'll have a good idea of what to expect from this game. Essentially, it takes those stylings, and puts them in a portable game. Earlier portable incarnations of the series stuck close to the stylings of the original Playstation One game. NOT A PROBLEM HERE. This is the kind of game fans of the series will want!

-THE SERIES LOSES NOTHING IN ITS TRANSITION TO A HANDHELD. I honestly thought that this game would end up being considerably weaker than its consular predecessors. Boy, was I ever wrong! This game doesn't make the same mistakes early portable versions of the franchise did. Anything you could want from this series, it's here.

-TONS OF MISSIONS, VEHICLES, STORYLINES, WEAPONS, AND PLACES TO GO. This series is excellent, because there is always something to do. The game offers missions you can take up, which follow the game's central plot. Alternatively, you can enter side plots as well. There are a ton of vehicles, and all of then can be stolen and used by you. Each one has its own strengths and weaknesses, but if you steal a police car, ambulance, or taxi cab, you'll be able to access side missions that go along with that type of vehicle. Hell, you can even just go around stealing cars and killing innocent bystanders, if that's your idea of fun (just don't get caught doing it!) In this universe, there is always something to do, as any fan of the series will tell you.

-NO CONTENT EDITING OF ANY TYPE - THIS IS THE WAY A MATURE RATED GAME SHOULD BE! Let's face the facts, even some games that have gained a Mature rating have been edited. Metal Gear Solid for the Playstation One had nudity of characters blurred out. Even the South Park game in the Nintendo 64 had the most vulgar of curse words bleeped. The thing I love about this series is that it just pitches all the rules like that out the window. What other gaming universe features folks pitching the F and S words around left and right, with no bleeping? As far as I am concerned, due to the Mature rating being suggested for ages seventeen and up, the games with the rating should be about the equivalent of a Restricted (R) rated movie. And this game fits that bill nicely.

-ONE OF THE FINEST PLAYSTATION PORTABLE GAMES SO FAR. There have been a hit-and-miss assortment of games for the new handheld so far, but this is definitely one of the finest titles that the handheld has to offer its gamers. It's well worth checking out - but for God's sake, be at least a teenager if you're gonna play this game. If you're younger than that, it might be a bit much for you. And the last thing we need is more of those damn senators complaining!

-THE BAD:

-THIS IS ONE OF THE MOST MISUNDERSTOOD GAMING FRANCHISES IN THE HISTORY OF VIDEO GAMES. Often, gamers just judge this series based on its controversial nature. They never bother to actually play the games, and just assume it's a bad series because of all the issues people have about it. This is a shame, because the game itself is actually very fun and entertaining. I'll bet those game-haters who whine about gaming violence have never actually sat down and played the games they speak so harshly against.

-THERE ARE SOME MINOR CAMERA ISSUES. These flaws are minor, but when you find yourself in some locales, you'll definitely notice these issues.

-NO CUSTOM CONTROL CONFIGURATION. You can choose from several configuration types, but sadly, you can't configure them to your own customized liking. Because of this, the controls definitely take some getting used to. I definitely know I was pushing the wrong buttons when I meant to do some things in the game.

-YOUR CHARACTER CAN'T SWIM, AND DIES WHEN HE FALLS IN WATER. No, I'm not making this up. Granted, many games in this series suffer from the same problem, but I wish they would have fixed it up for this one.

-MUSIC SELECTION NOT AS GOOD AS THE CONSULAR GAMES. Not a big flaw by any means, but it's definitely noticable.

-OVERALL:
Overall, despite some very minor flaws, this game actually proves itself to be a worthy game in this series. I had some serious doubts, but playing the game shattered them. If you're a Playstation Portable owner, and you're mature enough to handle it, definitely consider picking this game up. It's one of the handheld's finest releases to date.

EDITION NOTES:
The Grand Theft Auto series is one of the most popular gaming series out there, so this game is readily available in just about every video game store around. As a result, you shouldn't have to look too hard to find yourself a copy.

This game is awesome!!! It's got gta 3, gta vice city, and gta san andreas all in one. This game would be nothing without the blood, sex, drugs, and swearing, remember one thing, this game is BAD, my mom had to get it for me, and she was thinking second thoughts about getting it even though I have all the gta games. The blood and gore is the worst thing in the game, second is the swearing, third is the sex, and last is the drugs. I was shocked at the unbelievable graphics. But the controls were a little hard. I hope the review will help u.

I think this is a wonderful game for the Mature gamer. It is full of surprises, and the great gameplay that those who have played earlier console and PC verions. The controls are a bit "janky" but other than that, I would recommend this game to anybody who enjoys the Godfather and/or Casino type movie formats.

Highly recommended!

The "killer app" for the PSP.

INTRO: The GTA games are easily some of the most popular and controversial games of all time. The latest entry, Liberty City Stories, is set in Liberty City in 1998, three years before GTA:III. You play as Toni Cipriani, who was also in III.

GAMEPLAY: It's GTA on the go, and it's as great as the PS2 titles. Liberty City is pretty much the same as it was in III, with a few differences. Also, it has features that weren't in III, like motorcycles, knives, ability to damage cars by punching them, etc.

The gameplay is pretty much like others: kick-@$$ fun. Do missions for the Mafia, find hidden packages, go on rampages, steal cars, shoot people, fight in gang wars, do hidden missions, and much more.

There's online multiplayer games, too. Although I don't know how to get online on my PSP (LOL.)

GRAPHICS: Awesome for a portable game. They look as good as III's graphics.

SOUND: Great voice acting, and awesome sound effects.

MUSIC/RADIO STATIONS: Meh. The music on the radio station's OK, but I like III's better. However, you can listen to music that's downloaded onto your PSP instead. (Kind of like the X-Box versions.) Very neat.

OVERALL: An AWESOME portable game that will keep you addicted for hours. If you have a PSP, this is essential.

If you like the normal playstation version, you'll like this version too. it's one of those games that can keep you entertained forever. you can follow the storyline for as long as you like and if you get bored with that you can find some other mission to do. then if you get bored with that, find another one. an return to the storyline whenever you like.

just like the original

Well, I'd hoped for something a little different from the original. But, there's not much new. The missions are different. But it's the same world. So, for me, boring.

GTA again and again and again

These games never seem to get old although the storyline never really changes. This game is no exception. Graphics are some of the best on PSP.

Feature broken/poorly implemented?

I bought this game more or less to have a free-roam driving game. I am not too into the story and just like to cruise and dodge traffic. Maybe a few police chases here and there.

The graphics are so-so. I am sort of desensitized after playing Twisted Metal Head On first.

The USER TRACKS feature appears to be broken or poorly implemented. Would it be too much to ask to have that feature feed from /PSP/MUSIC instead of some special folder specifically intended for this particular game? I have yet to read the manual to find out where I should put my music.

It's GTA. Do You Really Need To Read Reviews?

It's a GTA game. If you played any of them, why read the reviews? It's a portable GTA game. Enough said. Buy it. Now. Go.
