Great game with great replay value

A friend of mine had this game on PSP and it is what got me to buy the system in the first place. I have never played any other incarnations of this game so this PSP version was fresh for me. The graphics are great and very detailed. The challenge of the game progresses as you get to be a better player. That's what keeps players like myself coming back to the game. You advance through novice courses into expert courses and on to one on one challenges with rival drivers/cars. There may only be 24 tracks to race but the mix of the six different classes of cars gives you the chance to try new things on each of the courses.
The only drawback I have noticed on this game is that the reward system is cheesy and not very well designed. After completing ALL of the basic and expert races you are rewarded with "The End Credits!" Woohoo! The other awards are just as lame with design drawings and earlier generation game credits as awards.
I've started the whole game over several times and always get a kick out of advancing in the courses. I've enjoyed this game and would encourage others to give it a shot.

One of the best racers to date for the PSP. A lot of fun and a lot of tracks. Use 1st person view, it's much better.

GET IT.

This is poetry and love stories in motion. When ever I am drifting around corners in this game while listening to the music, I feel like I am dancing with a car moving at 200 mph.

If you are looking for a reason to own a PSP, Ridge Racer is enough reason. It definitely shows the world that the PSP is going to challenge the Nintendo DS for the #1 spot.....I personally believe it will dominate.

Very good racing arcade

I start by saying that even though I love racing games, I pretty much s*ck at them. That doesn't stop me from trying many racing games from the hard core Grand Turismo titles, to more accessible Need for Speed. I dont know why I have not tried any Ridge Racer title before. I guess I was put off by most people saying that it is not very accurate driving.

Well, I tried this title now that is price is low and found it a hoot. I loved the sense of speed I get from the game. it is very easy to get started, but it does get harder as you go.

It is not a racing sim, even though, you are driving a car, the physics is very loose. You will enter drift very easy. I guess the mechanics is there for you to hone in you timing and control manuevers to achieve maximum speed. One minor flaw of this is that when you dont pull the drift right, you car never flips around 180 degrees. Another thing is that you can hit the wall and bounce off it with little penalty. This breaks the realism until you accept, again, that this is not a racing sim but an arcade racing game.

The graphics are very good looking for a first generation psp game. You will see some jaggies, which I've read is the usual problems of RR series games. But they are not distracting since you are moving very fast. The music is ok, not my cup of tea.

The only thing that could improve the game would be the ability to customize your ride like others games do. But in this case, you win races to unlock cars that are faster than the one you got right now. Oh yeah, you wont see any brand name of cars that you would recognize, no mazdas, nissans, etc. Instead you will get some made up over top brand names. So you car will resemble some mutation of a ferrari, viper, etc. Nothing you will recognize. and yet, the cars are good looking.

At the bargain price this game is, it is sure recommendation.

played many times.

With games these days going downhill like they are, its nice to see such a gem in the rough. This game will not let me put my psp down!!! The music is fantastic, the arcade physics are great (drift mania!). The graphics are stunning! Their just isnt enough good things I can say about this title! Something this one has that most psp race games seem to lack is a replay mode, and the ability to save and share my replay's... THIS IS A NEEDED FEATURE IN RACING GAMES!!!! Why would you have a slick race title and not have a replay mode (need for speed)? Oh well, enough said... Got 20 bones? GET THIS GAME!!!

wow faster faster i say

Ridge Racer is just one of those special series that racing fans can keep playing long after it's release. It's addictive racing, shiny cars, over the top secret cars, and a memorable race babe, Ridge Racer is the definite arcade racer. Since it's debut, it has promtply given gearheads the chance to slide their way through golden sunsets and crystal waterfalls, turboing to techno tunes. Good times indeed.

The latest incarnation of the game, is a greatest hits collections of race tracks and cars from Ridge Racer's past. It's a perfect game to play on the go, as it is bright, fun, and has good load times. The game has incredible graphics. Track detail, gloss, and awesome skies dominate this racer. The drifting feels natural, and the controls really feel like Namco put effort into their games. Drifting is really wasy, and when you do uit enough, you get rewarded with boost. it's really fun to slide around at full speed, as your car dosen't lose speed when drifting, and it's a total blast when you going really fast. The sound is futuristic, with a shiny menu and a huge array of tunes, with remixed songs as well. And feel the wind with incredible wind sounds and assorted goods to bring out great water effects. this game is a greast racer with alot of value. And even after winning it, you'll still want to racer more thanks to it's addicting gameplay and the lag free 8 player wireless matchups. With all this, you can't go wrong, especially when it is a the magic price point, clocking in at only twenty bucks.

The game will entertain you, and if you are a fan of Ridge, than this will live up to your expectations. And if you have a PSP and a DS, this one blows the DS version out of the water, which suffered from control problems.

A must for gearheads, and heck, even people who aren't into racing games will easily slide behind the wheel to see all the sunsets this game packs in.

Awesome!!!! Just Awesome!!!

Great Launch Title!!!

I have virtually every Ridge Racer release starting on the Playstation console (don't have the N64 release) up through the PSP (no X box 360 release yet) and enjoy all these titles immensely. Ridge Racer IV was my first title that I played, and certainly my favorite. (Especially the soundtrack, see below!)

This title is certainly impressive, especially for a handheld version. I am quite impressed with this offer up. I did have a few gripes, but overall, it was certainly very impressive.

Radio Dial
Wow! I LOVED the soundtrack of Ridge Racer IV, and would you believe it, they brought it back for this game!!! I can't believe it! I love, racing along, on these new tracks, portably, listening to the wonderful tracks that I've been listening to on my playstation console for over 5 years!!! Do you realize how long I've been looking for this soundtrack on EBay, and other on-line shopping websites? A long time! Sold out, always!!! Not available!

Major Gripe:
Too dark. As you know, this is a portable game. This is the only game that is too dark to play, in many cases. As most hand held games are required to play, in many different "dark" and "light" conditions, if the game is too dark, it is impossible to play. One major reason for this, is the type of game it its. A "fast" racer. If the brightness drops on a platformer or golf game, for a second or two, no big deal. But when you're in the middle of a tunnel, and the light is not quite right, than, bam, you hit the siderails and you're dead in the water. This game is not quite a sim, but even an arcade game needs a 'breather' and you don't get it, knowing your darkness problems.

Playing this game, brings back memories of the original GBA, with no backlight. Remember that? Yeah, it sucked. Fortunately, this game system has a backlight, but its not quite enough. I will say this: I really love this game! But I hope the producers make it more bright next time! That would be fantastic!

Awesome game! Love it! Buy this, and keep in mind my comments about it being dark, and you should be okay.

This is probably one of the best racing car games I've ever played. The graphics are excellent but the game can get pretty challenging which at some point seems impossible to pass. I won't give up though. :) The one thing that I don't like is when I crash against a wall or hit another car, you don't see the "car damage" at all. I mean what's the point of car racing when you can't see the damage? ;)

Other than that, it's a great game. So go out and get it!! Go on! Shoo shoo! What are you doing reading this when you could be spending your time getting ready to buy this game?? Stop reading this and go! :) lol
