"You Scandinavian freak!"

Back when Perfect Dark was released, it had a generally good reception. (Aside from some Goldeneye fanboys who thought their "IMPERFECT DARK LOL" reviews were clever.) Does it still hold up, two gens later? Sure. At its time, it was easily the best offline multiplayer FPS available. And as a person who's seen every tired Halo/generic military shooter clone, I'd argue that it still retains that position. PD's game mechanics are taken straight from Goldeneye and tweaked somewhat, which led to criticism from people who asserted it was derivative. But with video games, it's better to flesh out and explore the aspects of a previously established niche than to drudge ahead into adventurous territory for the sole virtue of doing something new. PD expands Goldeneye's forumla on every conceivable level. The basics are here; Left and right C buttons strafe, hold R to aim, and press the awesomely-placed Z button to fire. The otherwise awkward N64 controller was practically made for FPSs. The physics though, are far improved. When strafe to get away from a more heavily-armed opponent, you feel as though you're running for your life. If you use a heavy weapon like the reaper, kneel down for improved accuracy and you can wipe corridors clean of foes. Disarm an armed enemy and stand behind him as he surrenders for an improvised human shield. Everything boils down to logic, thus skill usually prevails as opposed to mastery of overly complicated controls, which is PD's strength.

One-player mode is pretty standard. You'll play through it once and be done. Multiplayer mode however, is way ahead of its time. Consider Goldeneye again. Its multiplayer was hailed as revolutionary, but what was it? A. Get the best weapon, or B. get the mines and camp. Plodding controls prevented any real comebacks, (LET'S CIRLCE AROUND WITH C AND FIRE! FUN) so the matches were usually determined first blood. PD has a ton of weapons, all with secondary functions, properly facilitating any style of playing. Use an RCP-120's cloaking mode and put a bullet in their head without them even seeing you if you're stealthy, if you're a gambler chuck bouncy grenades until someone dies, and if you prefer just standing your ground and mauling down anything in front you go with the cyclone. Etc... If there's one problem, it's that the weapons are at times TOO cheap. There are numerous instant kill weapons, as well as one that sees and shoots through walls to hit enemies. Let's not forget the laptop gun, which is a devastating proxy weapon on such small courses. Dealing with a gun turret requires explosives and lots of time, time you're not given if you're not dealing with a camper. Multiplayer maps are generally pretty cool. There's this one course with two catwalks and about a hundred [estimate] feet of space between them. Incredible sniping battles ensue.

What's left? The graphics are pretty fugly, even for their time. Every color is bold and hideous, like melted crayon wax. Someting tells me more time was invested on getting the weapons to shine all cool-like than the character models. The animation's pretty decent in singleplayer, though. It's satisfying to see enemies occasionally spazz out in a seizure before dying, and all the reload animations are cool. To the ears, Pefect Dark doesn't offend. The music is mostly fast and noisy industrial-sounding stuff, nothing special. PD's various voice clips are cartoonish and outlandish, but often ill-used. One time I shot this guy whose back was turned. As he fell to the ground dead, I heard him ask, "Was that a bullet?"

Uhm... Yea?

But it's fun overall.

PERFECT DARK IS "PERFECT"

If you liked goldeneye by rare, then you will most likely enjoy this game. I bought it and it had smarter enemies, the enemies yell and scream when they see you, and there are various levels with agent, secret agent, and perfect. I enjoy it when me and my friend fight the enemies together on the same team beating the levels on 1 player. When you fight each other in combat simulator you and your friend can go against computer players in multiplayer levels. Also you can acquire cheats after beating every level. You can practice your shooting skills at a firing range and dig up information on enemies at the Carrington institute (that is your base). Sometimes I just walk around and kill all the enemies instead of doing the missions by activating alarms or just see and kill. The levels are located in various places such as area 51 or Air Force One. There is a long range of weapons and gadgets from automatic guns to a flying camera. My advice to you is buy this game and don't forget the expansion pack or it will be no fun at all.

Okay, I'm stingy...

I'd probably give PD 3.5 stars, where I'd give GoldenEye 4.5 or so.

I'll admit, the multiplayer option beats GoldenEye's, and the combat simulator, and "training facility" (which, in and of itself can open some cheats and special features) features are a great addition, and they're incredibly well-made. I also like the added touches of hearing Jo's footsteps, and the guards that curse when they get shot (the guards are also more alert and responsive, which is neat, even if the game's noticeably harder for it).

My main problem is that the game itself sort of takes a back seat to the special features. The missions, for example, get interrupted so much by the "level" ending that it's annoying. The mood is enhanced by things like more bystanders, rain, etc., and the backgrounds are better, but none of the missions are noticeably more complex than the Mayan level of GoldenEye.

For all the extras, PD is awesome; for the actual game, I must say I prefer GoldenEye.

Yowza!

Makers of Goldeneye, over 40 weapons, awesome multiplayer action, incredible story, great graphics, fantastic gameplay, expansion pack enhanced, its been in the making for many years and these guys arn't playing around. I'm telling you right now if you don't allready have a N64, get one, if you don't have an expansion pak, get one, and if you don't have this game on reserve, do it now!

multiplayer is fun but nowt else

...the actual game is okay but certainkly isnt on par with goldeneye. with the exception of the man dan carrington the characters are wooden and the story is very poor, you never feel into the game's story at all. the level design in general is bad, like the supposed 'stealth' mission in chicago where every enemy knows where you are anyway so there is no stealth involved whatsoever. some of the levels though are fun with inspired design like the sniping levcel in the snow but it doesnt make the game good.

what does make the game worth playing is the multi player modes, although the graphics take another turn for the worse they are acceptable in 2 player but with 4 you cant see anything at all without a massive tv. the multi modes make pd, beating the hell out of simulants in slow motion can be fun and sure beats the game. this is what you should be buying the game for, not for the story mode. the trouble with this is that the pd arenas are poor and its only the graphically altered goldeneye levels that are worth playing. a bit lazy on the developers part.

overall: except for the inclusion of mr. carrington the story mode is a bust so unless you have enough mates to make the multi worthwhile dont buy it.

ABSOLUTE PERFECTION

How do you follow up GoldenEye, one of the best games ever? With a game that has everything GoldenEye had and more! Joanna Dark may not have the Barbie-like figure of Lara Croft, but she's still hot enough to make hundreds of thousands of gamers buy Perfect Dark for the N64. PD has amazing graphics and game play that will thrill gamers for years to come. You play Joanna in 16 missions, plus 4 bonus levels, in this great spy/action/shooter from Rare, makers of GoldenEye. You get really cool guns, like the Farsight XR-20 (which can target enemies with x-ray and shoot them through walls), the SuperDragon (a machine gun/grenade launcher), the Psychosis Gun (turns enemies into allies), and the Falcon 2 (Joanna's main gun with silencer and scope capabilities). You also can play Co-Op (two player cooperative), Counter-Op (one person is Joanna, the other is an enemy), and the best feature...Combat Simulator with tons of simulants you can fight with or against with up to 4 human players. It is the highest rated Nintendo 64 game ever, and has sold over a million copies, and everyone should buy it. Note that you need the Expansion Pak for some options (like solo missions) because the graphics are so great. The name is Dark. Joanna Dark.

When I heard that there was going to be a sequel to 007, without hesitation, I preordered it. It doesn't take that much to impress me the only reason I preordered Perfect Dark was because it was the sequel to Goldeneye. I love Goldeneye. Later, as I found more things out, I began to get excited, realizing that I had invested in a sound game that was, unbelievably, better than Goldeneye. By far this will be the best 64 game ever! These are the reasons why it is the best -Improved multiplayer levels(30 from what I heard), where you can fall off ledges. The multiplayer levels were specifically made for the maximum fun-factor. Up to 12 can play at a time! -Better graphics including new environments with realtime lighting and cool reloading sequences - And finally more weapons. Goldeneye had 22 guns. Ha! that is child's play. Perfect Dark will have 44 weapons all with a secondary function. Some will be very useful in multiplayer. These are just a short summary of all the features. I have not given all the details, I don't even have the game yet! All I can say is WOW! If you have a 64 you shouldn't miss out on this trust me it will all be worth it.

AWESOME

This is the best game that has come out for the N64, and any gaming machine. The graphics are superb, the lighting effects are great, you can actually shoot out a light and it gets dark. There are endless possibilities of multi-player mode, even when you are alone. The play control is so smooth, it's no problem selecting a new weapon or opening a door, or walk where you want. This game has it ALL.

You could play 24/7 for a week and not even be close to what this game can do. Also, you can use the transfer pack to put your face on a character in multi-player, even though nobody tells you about it.
