Not "Perfect," but very, very close.

The is the pseudo-sequel to Rare's original first-person shooter masterpiece, "Goldeneye 007." Since Rare no longer has a license for James Bond, they decided to create their own character and story. The result is "Perfect Dark." It uses an updated version of Goldeneye's game engine, and as a result, plays in much the same way as Goldeneye. Believe me, this is not a bad thing! Some new things were added since Goldeneye: each weapon has a secondary function (like a machine gun that seconds as a grenade launcher), you can fall off ledges where there is no railing, and the whole multiplayer setup is completely new. It is much more customizable this time around. Ever want to play one-hit kills (License to Kill in Goldeneye) with teams? Now you can, plus much, much more. This game, in my opinion, did NOT live up to its hype. It is a great game, but it is not the best game ever created by any means. It is only marginally better in certain areas than Goldeneye. Example: multiplayer customization. It is also marginally worse in some areas. Example: level design. Trust me, I'm not saying its a bad game. Goldeneye was one of the best selling games of all time, and even though its three years old, people still talk about it, and will be for a long time. To conclude, if you are more interested in a futuristically styled game, including weapon design and function, with excellent multiplayer customization (you can do virtually whatever you want), Perfect Dark is the game for you. If you prefer a more realistic experience and want to see the world through the eyes of James Bond, albeit at the cost of multiplayer customization and awesome power of some of the Perfect Dark weapons, but with the added bonus of the quintiscential collection of multiplayer levels, Goldeneye is sure to please. They are both excellent games in their own right. I own both and love them both. I will never part with either.

Goldeneye, kiss PD's feet.

Perfect Dark is one of those games that don't come around too often. Since the release of Goldeneye back in '97, no FPS has beat it in Solo based missions or in Multiplayer experience. But then, you get this game, and your world suddenly changes. PD take Goldeneye, gives it a new storyline, characters, guns(40), voice acting, woman hero, over 20 death animations, some cuss words in the heat of battle, and so on. WOW! Multiplayer is by far.. the best yet. King of the hill with 4 sims with the far-sight.. whoa! This game has so much going on for it, it's really hard to say it's not better than goldeneye. Nothing like sniping a guy and having him fall 40ft. to his death.. but not before screaming "You .....! ". Far be it to me to make your decision for you, but you really arn't a gamer without this epic title. BUY IT NOW!

THIS GAME IS NOT GOLDENEYE

Well ladies and gentlemen. A new and supposedly incredible game is out there. Perfect Dark. I bought this for my little brother and thought he would play it constantly. I played with him and noticed the graphics are much worse than those of goldeneye and the story line is corny. The missions are somewhat fun but farfetched and the gameplay just doesnt match goldeneye. This game had all the elements to be incredible, it is just missing something. It didnt pull together as well as goldeneye did. The simulant option is incredible and there are trillions of game modes, but until the new bond game, i remain with 007.

This Game is Definetly Perfect

I've been waiting for this game since b4 Dec '99. Let me tell you, it's well worth the wait. From the start up, I was totally enraptured. The storyline is wonderfully scripted that is backed by wonderful acting and beautiful cutscenes. The solo player missions are nothing short of excellent. There are tons of great weapons that are fun to discover. Perhaps the best feature of the game is the Multiplayer (called Combat Simulator in the game). There is a feature for almost every aspect of the game. You pick up to 6 guns, the number of computer controlled simulants (up to 8), their personalities, the arena, your character and more. If the game was released only with the combat simulator, I'd still give a 5 outa 5. Goldeneye was incredible. Perfect Dark is beyond incredible. A must be for any action fan.

The Most "Perfect" Game Ever!

When I first read about Perfect Dark, I have to admit it didn't seem that great, but the more I read the more I wanted it, and I ended up buying it the first day it came out. I was not disappointed. The game is awesome, a truly better game than Goldeneye ever was or will be. The graphics were so good it was mind-boggling, every detail, from moving around to shooting out lights (and the room really does get darker) to reloading your guns(and there are over 40 of them), every detail is superb. The levels are much more challenging than Goldeneye's(mostly because enemy AI is so much smarter), and the multiplayer is so much better. It includes tons of arenas, the ability to choose every weapon in the level, and the addition of computer "bots"(up to 8)to help heat things up. And if you're worried about the mature rating, don't be, because the language filter can edit all the vulgar language and if you think blood is too much(hah!),you can even make it so the blood comes rainbow colored in paintball mode. The only drawback is you DEFINITELY want the Expansion Pak, because without it you can't play 1 player solo missions, only 2 player multiplayer(not 3 or 4), and the graphics are worse, and the game shrinks down to less than half of what it's worth. However, with the Expansion Pak the game is the best, a high action shooter that gives Goldeneye, and any other game, a run for its money. All in all, the game can only be descibed as Perfect.

Rare has done it again!

Ok,I really liked Goldeneye, but Perfect Dark totally blew it away! The graphics in this are very well crafted, for instance, reloading. Instead your gun dipping to the bottom of the screen and clicking like in Goldeneye, you see the magazines being put into the guns. The storyline of Perfect Dark is bizzare and interesting with many twists and turns. Also, the cutscenes that you see in the begging and end(sometimes the middle) of the levels are much more interesting than goldeneye's five second ones. You can even see all the cutscenes put together as a little movie if you want. The AI in this game is much more advanced than the neanderthals that guard Goldeneyes corridors. They set off alarms, sniper you, alert other guards, and they yell obscenities at you too. That's another great thing about the game. The characters in it have voices instead of just captions like in Goldeneye, although captions are sometimes used along with voices. The single player will leave you satisfied each and every time you complete a level. Peculiar gadgets, like camspies, bombspies and drugspies(remote controlled cameras), add to the game even more. Then there's multiplayer. My, god multiplayer. With 20 different arenas, a set of 30 challenges with many different scenarios, and you can even play up to 8 computer controlled sims, alone or with friends. It has many classic scenarios, like capture the case(flag)and king of the hill, or more unconventional ones, like hacker central, a downloading game where you score points downloading from a small computer in the level. Then there's co-op and counter-op, where you can play single player with a partner or against a partner. And outside of all that, outside of multiplayer, co-op, counter-op, and the magnificent single player, there's the carrington institute, a huge building with holographic combat training, a firing range, labratories where you can practice using all different kinds of gadgets, learn about characters in the game, and vehicles and weapons you'll encounter. This game has it all, including an extensive cheats table, with a handful of easy to get cheats for video game novices like myself. Perfect Dark, and I'm not lying, is one of the best games ever made for N64.

Custom battles and awesome, imaginative weapons.

Okay, here's the deal...Goldeneye 007 was awesome, and Perect Dark could also be considered kind of a sequel to it...but since Rare didn't own the rights to Bond, they had to come up with something Bond-like...so it's set in the near future to account for all the space-age weapons and gadgets. In a word, this game is incredible!

The plot is actually quite intricate in PD, following an undercover agent's investigation into spacecrafts and aliens, but there's so much more to the game than just the objective/mission stuff. You can play with your friends (on the same team or against) and you can also add computer-controlled sims to play as well, with your choice of weapons, arena, and players. One or more players can also take on the game's challenges, where you accept a simple mission to capture the flag or take the base in a 10 minute span vs. the computer. Plan on buying the expansion pack or else you'll miss out on most of these extras. (you'll miss about 2/3 of what the whole game offers without it)

The graphics/sound/music in the game are top-notch for the N64. The game features many particle effects, such as sparks flying and other cool details. (although if you have a PC and you have gadgets like a GeForce or Voodoo whatever, I'm not sure if PD will impress!) Oh yeah, this game is bloody...if you kill someone, and continue to shoot them as they fall to the ground, you'll see a nice array of blood fly though the air, leaving a maroon cloud on nearby walls. The sound and music are incredible, too. Every weapon (over 40 in PD) has a unique sound effect. The music seems to be slightly similar to 007, but has a few much better (and darker) tracks.

The game control and weapons in PD are unreal. Basically the control is exactly like 007, but every weapon has a primary and secondary function. For example, the assualt rifle's main function is as a machine-gun, but by holding the "B" button for a few seconds, the gun's secondary function as a grenade launcher is activated. Basically, almost all of the best weapons from Bond are there, with extras. The RCP-90 (now the RCP-120) has secondary function that lets you cloak yourself, like the Predator movies. The game features a weapon that blew me away the first time I saw a friend playing it, the Farsight XR-20. This weapon is much like the one in the movie Eraser...a particle gun that lets you see and shoot through walls, the advantage of it being players can't hide in one spot the whole game and stay there, you have to keep moving. Also, there are alien-type lasers and cannons (battles resembling Star Wars shouldn't be uncommon, if you can find the weapons), so even the RCP-120 has a hard time looking cool with all the firepower in this game. The detail and creativeness put into the weapon selection and features took me by suprise, I still am trying to find all of them.

In summary, this game is much better than Bond, especially the cool customized 4 player battles. If you can, try playing the game in slow motion. It's annoying, but it lets you analyze and savor every detail this game is pushing out to you. If you own an N64, get this game! (and the expansion pack)

This game rocks! Everything is beyond all resonable expectations of all first person shooters to date. The depth of originality and game-play Rare put in to this title will shine for years to come! However, the only draw back is the dissapointing and often irritating drop in frame rate in multiplayer and co-operative modes due to the lack of hardware capability to keep up! Otherwise the is a "Perfect" title that no true gamer should be without. Highly recommended!

THIS GAME IS THE BEST EVER. It is made by the same people who made Golden eye and is 100 times better. Anybody who says this game sucks really sucks.

When I first think of Perfect Dark my first reaction is the I feel a chill surging down my spine and I get goose bumps...Well did the game match the hype or is it like other titles who have come and failed all expectations...This time it's a dream come true..Everything GoldenEye failed in, Perfect Dark fized it up...Everything GoldenEye had. Perfect Dark imporved upon it...The game is enourmous with tons of menu's so that you can tweak the game to the maximum and feel right at home before indulging in some gun shooting activity...The single player experience is harder than goldeneye's and each difficulty is like a whole new game whichi gives it tons of playability...The game has more secrets than Ali-Baba's cave...This makes it more enjoyable and fun to play..This time you feel like you are actually working for the agency with training modes and target ranges what more do you need...The multiplayer is what this game is about...there is one down fall in the multi player is that the levels are like a maze I mean the levels are huge...For gamers who like to camp it's just what they need but for gamers who like to kill every second of the match it will be a nightmare...The weapons are simply amazing with secondry functions and special gadgets...The simulants are simply wonderfull they behave like real humans and the multi player modes are simply breath taking like hacker central and team games there is nothing like 4 humans and 8 bots in one deathmatch hte only downfall is the frame rate everything else is sooooooooooooooo amazing This message is to all the gamers who own a nintendo64 go and buy this game if u don't have money...... burrow just get this game oh and if you don't have an expansion pack go buy one now...Perfect Dark compered to GoldenEye is like Unreal Tournement to Quake 2...
