One of the best games for the N64

I bought this game having played 007 quite a bit, which was made by the same people and is one of the greatest N64 games ever made. The advantage that Perfect Dark has is in the multiplayer combat. In addition to friends, you can have up to 8 computers playing in the game, with any combination of teams that you want. This is fun with several real friends, or just for playing by yourself against others. The AI is smart enough to be extremely challenging at the hardest difficulty levels, or slow/dumb enough for a new player to learn against at lower difficulty levels. Newer systems have better multiplayer capabilities (online, or hooking up multiple X-boxes for Halo parties, etc), but for the N64 this is as good as it gets (and if you like to play against computers instead of real people, then this is as good as any newer system games that I've seen).

Ehh...an interesting shooter, with fun 4 player options...

...but nothing quite like Goldeneye, or any of the 007 games. If the price is under $10, buy it, it'll be worth it.

Great Action Shooter Game

Perfect Dark is GoldenEye's gameplay sequel. Not the story sequel. It involves more and more weapons than GoldenEye and a co-op campaign missions to help you if you get stuck. This game also has dialogues which means not only do they have the subtitles, the characters actually speak. GoldenEye doesn't. Plus the sound effects of footsteps make things more realistic. Very challenging and very fun. Beat GoldenEye first, then get this game and beat it.

Amazing game

If you have never heard of perfect dark or have never played it then you are missing out. This is the only game in its genre for the N64 to match the gameplay and graphics of Goldeneye 007. I swear by this game and name it one of the best games of all time. Great replay value, multiplayer and single player missions makes this game worth purchasing for any amount of money.

This game is fantastic

Made by the people that brought us Goldeneye..this game takes place in the future with a super spy by the name of Joanna Dark. With the same control sceme, graphics engine this game brings the same amount of fun as its predecessor. This game has an awesome multi player mode, plenty of unlockable cheats. This game is a shining example of how great the Nintendo 64 really is.

My grandson lost his Perfect Dark game in a flood a few years ago. When he found it here he wanted me to buy it for him.
I did , he is very happy with it.
I give the seller a two thumbs up for getting it to us so fast.
Thank you and I will buy from you again !

4.5; a classic period or a classic for its time?

Ever one day out of the blue feel like playing a game or watching a movie you haven't had in years? Fond memories of experiencing it and how it made you felt at that time seem familiar enough to maybe warrant a revisit? It's used time and time again with ports and remakes but what about playing the original? Does it still hold up or does it seem...odd now? Recently I had a strange inkling to revisit Perfect Dark so taking out my old N64 with thankfully my Expansion Pak from Donkey Kong's packaging, I thought I'd check it out and while I can nitpick it to death about "dated this and that", it still wouldn't mask that it was a great game through and through.

Story: Special Agent Joanna Dark is an operative for the Carrington Institute who gets involved in a conspiracy involving the Institute, another corporation known as DataDyne and 2 warring alien races. At the time, the plot was rather ambitious, moreso than Goldeneye which followed the film nearly to a T. Now of course it's quite silly and the single player isn't as developed or as memorable but it still works to a certain extent now.

Graphics: Back then these graphics were through the roof. More realistic lighting and textures, a bit more emphasis on art design and decor as opposed to the bland levels of Goldeneye and character animations are smoother. The framerate did take a hit occasionally but not enough to make you curse that its so jittery. Now it certainly has aged though you can appreciate it for what it is now and what the game did at the time but if you're going to play an old game, be prepared for old looking stuff.

Sound/Music: The soundtrack to Perfect Dark largely consists of a more futuristic Bond-style music where it's a bit more ambient and mysterious with moments where it gets really exciting and cinematic. The voice acting however can be a bit sketchy since it's not really overracted but rather it sounds rather flat at times while other times it works or its comical.

Gameplay: It's strange to revisit an old gameplay system since it's familiar enough to know what to do but it's been so long and you've played several different types that it feels...alien, no pun intended. Essentially, controlling Joanna dark's movement and vision is the Analog stick and the C-Up and C-Down, while the other 2 are for strafing or more correct turning. It took some getting used to since I've had to use dual analog for a long time and eventually I got around to it but it still felt odd. Missions are broken up like Goldeneye with several objectives before you can finish the level and in a neat feature, the objective can be different on different difficulty settings. One mission might require you just to do one or 2 things while on Hard, you'll have to do some extra stuff to pass.

One of Goldeneye's memorable features was the different guns from handguns, automatics, shotguns and even miniguns and rocket launchers. PD's weapons go a bit beyond that and you'll have stuff like CamSpy which is like a tiny motorized camera/spy vehicle to alien weaponry and things like night vision. It's easy to get into and it's fun to experiment though the more accurate precision of games like Halo or Bioshock kind of make it initially problematic to get used to.

The N64 became a bit of a party machine around the house here with the Mario Party games, the WWF/WCW wrestling games, racers and of course, Goldeneye. PD adds even more customizable features and just generally a lot more stuff but to access it all you need the expansion pak and of course the more people, the bigger the knock against the framerate. Most of my family and friends would just pop in Goldeneye for multiplayer so it's hard to say how it would stack up.

With games like the 2 Zeldas and Perfect Dark, the N64 was a very capable machine at delivering solid play though techwise it wasn't the most advanced but if you can track it down or even still have it, it's worth giving the game another go.

An amazing shooter for its time, it was reason enough to buy a N64.

Perfect Dark was one of the greats that the N64 churned out during its life span. I mean, you had this, Goldeneye, Super Mario 64, Donkey Kong 64, Banjo Kazooie, Banjo Tooie, Mario Kart 64, Ocarina of Time, Majora's Mask, and more! All of which are considered by most to be some of the best games in history. Its a wonder the N64 didn't completely dominate. Anyway, onto the game itself. The graphics, were flat out amazing for their time. The soundtrack is legendary. The A.I. was possibly the best at that point in time. The shooting mechanics were probably the best on a console during that time as well. Not to mention all the cool guns with even cooler secondary firing modes. I don't know what else I could possibly say to convince someone of how amazing this game is. If you haven't played this game yet, I feel sorry for you. You can probably find it on Gametap or a used copy of the original somewhere, but if you haven't already played it you probably don't have an N64.

Greatest Game I've Ever Owned

This is the best game for the N64. Quite possibly the greatest. Huge multiplayer,challenging,co-op mission,counter-op missions, decent graphics for it's time and overall FUN! Alot of people say that it was an unofficial sequel to Goldeneye because of it's similar engine, controls and gameplay...I suppose it's safe to think that--they were made by the same companies (Rare & Nintendo). Since I already own it,the only thing I can hope for now is if it becomes available for XLIVE Arcade. I'm willing to pay 60 bucks for this gem. Buy it...as a matter of fact, buy Goldeneye too. They both kick a*s.
