After Playing My Newly Purchased Metal Gear Solid 2

People, this game is AMAZING, BREATHTAKING and UNBELIEVABLE !!!
After playing it 12 hours straight (not kidding), I can safely tell you, that MGS2 is THE game for your playstation 2,without MGS2 you only have half the value of your PS2.
The graphics, sound, gameplay and atmosphere are all shockingly realistic (thankfully, not TOO realistic, that would spoil the fun), and plunge you deep into a Hide-and-Shoot, Stealthy and amazingly clever story (which I won't reveal any details about) that surpasses anything you have ever experienced.
To sum this up: You NEED this game. NOW. And I mean N O W.

Awesome mechanics. Pretentious plot.

Metal Gear Solid was the best action game released on the PS1, and to this day remains one of my favorite and most often played games. MGS2's gameplay improves on MGS; there are more options available for avoiding the enemy, more depth assigned to guard intelligence (it is often helpful to hide bodies...), and the graphical improvements expected of a game made for a superior platform.
However, there are weaknesses to the game. It suffers somewhat from lack of originality; the plot is nearly symmetrical with that of the original MGS for most of the game. When it finally deviates from MGS, however.. it becomes too incredible. Whereas MGS explored ethics and power over one's destiny (clumsily, but benign enough), MGS2 tries to tackle the corrupting influence of power, the power of ideas AND jumps on the Matrix bandwagon.
One too many plot twists was included in the exposition near the end of the game... it should have ended with Ocelot.
To Konami's credit, the presentation of the storyline is top notch. Plenty o' dramatic cinemas and eye-popping graphics.
My verdict: MGS2 is worth buying, playing, and playing again. Just remember that you can skip the cinemas.

Metal Gear WEAK!

Man, this game was a wash. I was totally dissapointed. The storyline is hypocritical, self depricating, and insulting to the player. It's not only obnoxious to listen to, but it's the most paraniod/conspiracy theory [stuff] I've ever seen. The visuals and AI are top notch, but who cares? You never get to play! The you play as Snake for MAYBE 30 min of actual game time, the rest is 2...hours of cutscenes and codec, and then you have to play as [weak] Raiden, who's as asexual as Japanese characters come. Oh, and then you only get to play as him for another 2 hours. The other 15 are cut scenes and codec. Yeah, the voice acting ruled, but again, if I wanted to watch a movie, I'd buy a [movie] ticket..., not a video game...! Also, c'mon! let's kill things! Tranqilizer darts are ok for a while, but it's so annoying! They give you a big ... gun to kill things, and when you do shoot something, they all come running. Cry realisim all you want, but I like fantasy in my games. Grand Theft Auto 3 is a much better game than this. True, the visuals aren't as good, but you get to PLAY the game! Imagine that! And the storyline is intricate enough, plus you get to use the weapons given to you. Play this game as a rental. You'll save yourself a lot of money. My rating? D

Something I don't understand...

I've read several reviews for FFX where people complain about the cut scenes being too long. Then they turn around and recommend MGS2!? Don't get me wrong. I thought MGS2 was a great game, but some of the cut scenes were literally 10 minutes long. The longest one in FFX was maybe 3-4 minutes. But enough bitching...Metal Gear Solid II was one of the best games I've played for PS2. If only it were longer.

Its really hard to take a defensive position on a game when you see that some of the people(some, not all)you're supporting using text like: THIS GAME RULZ!, or THIS GAMES THE BOMB!(note the capitalization for strong emotional emphasis). Fortunatly, MGS2 is a worthy predicessor to MGS(which was an great game for its time). It's just as emersive as the original(I stayed up untill the wee hours of the morning finishing off the rest of the game), but the gameplay is much improved and polished.

First thing I have to brush off is this whole "cut-scene" issue(which, like the rest of the game, are quite pretty). If you cannot get into the story line of this game, YOU WILL HATE THIS GAME, PERIOD! While there will be little sprinkles of gameplay here and there, the majority you will be playing a sponge to the long, gratuitous cinematics of this game. Here, you will try and soak up as much of the dialog and information as possible to make sense of the plot. Part of the reason I got into the this game is that dialog and story give the character's perpose. They're not just "professionals doing a job" but people willing to question what's going on around them(albiet not at first). Some unblieveable plot twists are thrown in the game, detracting from the realistic environment(for the record, guns like the SOCOM, PSG1, M4, AK-47 are ALL modeled after the real things. They may not be replicas of their real life counterparts, but those guns exist in some shape or form in real life). Overall though, the storyline is encompassing and certainly raises some good philosphical points(especially on the subjects of war and military).

Gameplay is a step up from the last one. More actions Snake/Raiden can do, smarter AI(though still not perfect), and better action(which is due in no small part to the adition of the first-person view point) round off a pretty good package. If I had a complaint in the gameplay department though is that the difficulty is lacking. I died more often just experimenting with different variables then I did fighting bad guys or bosses. Its a blance that many have trouble with and like its precursor, MGS2 is still too easy(note: this is based on normal difficulty, not hard or that other one).

Graphics and sound are used like they should be. More than just eyecandy, they are used to minipulate the emotions of the player. The detail(character and environment) of the graphics is jaw-dropping. The best I've seen since Shenmue. The soundtrack is superb, quite possibly the best that I've heard for this type of game. The voice acting ranges from above-average to good(Snake's voice is excellent as it was in the first one). The Raiden/Rose interplay is fun to listen to with its campy, almost soap opera romance feel to it. The best part of the games auditory experience comes when things start going haywire with the codec and Col.Campbell starts muttering in short, incohernt bursts. The result was chilling and almost mindaltering(ravers with helucingenic problems might want to skip those scenes). Both aspects visual and audio are played to their full extent in ths game.

All this praise and I still only give it four stars?!?! What gives? I hate to agree with the naysayers on this one, but with the much-improved gameplay of this one over MGS, its a shame to see it burried beneith SO MUCH DIALOG! More time spent playing and this game could have easily have been 5 stars. But it's hardly a fatal fault when the story is as engrossing(even if at times unplausible and preachy). Though if their were any more actual gameplay here, the game would roughly be about 30 hours long. And I don't know about you people, but a 30 hour adventure game might get a little nerve racking after awhile. Worth playing once for the experience but like I said at the top, if you don't like the story, YOU WILL WITHOUT A SHADOW OF A DOUBT HATE THIS GAME(I can use caps too!Weeee). Heed the warning.

Overhyped [...]

A not bad game that is totally and complete ruined by the insane amount of movie clips attempting to 'emerge' you in the games incredably lame plot. If I wanted to see a bad movie with a ridiculously stupid plot and bad acting I'll rent a Steven Seagal movie. This disk does not even give you the satisfaction of breaking after you slam it into the edge of your coffee table.

Metal Gear Solid appeared on the PlayStation back in 1998. Next-gen gameplay, a deep storyline and top-notch visuals and sound made it a breakthrough for the industry. Not only was it a revolutionary title for its time that pushed the console to its limits, but it was supposedly a good sign of things to come. That outcome would ultimately be its sequel, Sons of Liberty, one of the most anticipated of all games. The return of hero Solid Snake gave gamers another chance to experience espionage action once again, but given its reputation for its movie qualities over gameplay, when does a game stop being a game? Sons of Liberty answers this and much more.

Everyone was relieved to know Solid Snake made a comeback. With his newly formed team with Otacon, their mission objective was to discover the circumstances surrounding the new Metal Gear and make it known to the public. It started out great, drawing you in with the plot slowly unfolding and the continuation of Snake's story. Suddenly as a unexpected shock to everyone, gamers are soon placed in the perspective of a new character, Jack, a.k.a. Raiden. We are now playing as a whiny, snobbish and clueless rookie who gets in annoying conversations with his girlfriend, Rose. Why the developers chose to use the names 'Jack' and 'Rose' from the movie Titanic is beyond anyone's comprehension. Also, with film music composer Harry Gregson-Williams handling composition duties, it hints that Konami was more intent on creating a movie than making a game.

Raiden is without a doubt the star here yet Kojima did an excellent job of hiding it, not to mention tricking and deceiving the whole world into thinking Snake was the only playable character. Nowhere in the previews or even on the packaging was Raiden spoken of. The game has also somewhat lost the gritty military nature of its predecessors, becoming more of a sci-fi fantasy drama. The convoluted storyline that no one wants to figure out and the uninteresting cast of characters (which includes a bisexual vampire and a roller-blading fat guy) don't do the gameplay much justice, which has you mostly defusing explosives as well as babysitting little sisters in between boss battles. Since the entire incident was a Shadow Moses simulation, a majority of the gameplay structure and plot elements are simple rehashes from the first Metal Gear Solid.

The cutscenes and dialogue, which were more tolerable in the first MGS, are lengthy and often downright unbearable. Many games, such as Nintendo's Ocarina of Time and Squaresoft's Vagrant Story, do a great job of balancing gameplay and cinemas. Sons of Liberty, however, does not seem to understand the difference between the two. The movies can be skipped over with ease, but doing so means missing out on vital information on the plot. If gamers want to know more of the story, they will have to sit through the movies, amounting to overly long periods of time. Watching the cinemas will make the game long and boring, while skipping them will make the game incredibly short. It's unrewarding either way you go.

Visually, Sons of Liberty is one of the better-looking PS2 titles, even today. The in-game and demo music, sound effects and voice-acting will be some of the best you will ever hear in a console game. The inclusion of the first-person viewpoint is also a welcome addition to the franchise. The story is definitely difficult to fully comprehend, but most players will give up trying to even care anyway. These stand-out aspects still cannot save Sons of Liberty from falling into the category of games that emphasize cinematics over gaming substance. The game tries hard to give its life message, in which we are treated to a well-deserved ending. But what someone has to endure to see that ending is just not worth it. Not even Solid Snake's Tanker Chapter helps heighten the replay value and fun factor. For those who do value gameplay as the dominant characteristic of games, Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty will simply pass as a title that is disappointing. With The Twin Snakes and Snake Eater joining the series, Sons of Liberty should be easily forgotten (or at least remembered for its unforgiving experience).

How can ANYONE rate this game yet?

It hasn't even been released, and almost 100 people have already written reviews. You video game geeks need to settle down, stop salivating and wait for the ... game to come out.

Yes that's right, after four "Metal Gear" games the fifth is about to launch in less than "TWO" months. "Sons of Liberty" is the second of the "Metal Gear Solid" series and the fifth in the entire "Metal Gear" series.

Any ways, MGS 2's graphics are pretty decent and the models were well design but if you didn't notice the background textures weren't all that hi-res. Now if you only noticed, that the game's graphics were cool... Well you must be missing out on alot.
MGS 2 is not about the graphics it's about the level of "DETAIL". You shoot a bucket of ice, the ice will fall out, the smaller ice cubes will melt faster than the one's stuck together. You shoot a magazine, the pages will fall out, you shoot it again it will shred into pieces. It's that make MGS 2 one of..no..no, the greatest game to hit the "PS2" (so far, but there not much). Heck if you stare (in first person view) at the pin-up model on the locker too long...well, why don't you try it yourself in the demo. That's Level of Detail, something most game developers in North America must learn from the Japanese. Graphics aren't everything, just look at NBA Live 2001 good graphics, robot game play. In fact most of MGS2's cut scenes are just pre-rendered videos. Yes I thought they were real-time (in-game) too but their not, a VGA Box will prove that to you.

Now I finished the demo in 15-20 minutes and I discovered that this game is worth it. Unlike most PS2 game it proves it. Even when it was that short, if it could prove to you the game was well done, then that's a must buy. And especially since it's coming out before the Japanese Version. It only makes it even more worth it. To be honest with you, this is the only game that is worth buying the a PS2 for (besides GT3). There isn't much out there (exclusively that is) that is great for the PS2. I heard there were a Million reasons to buy a PS2... there's actually only... 5. But rest assure MGS 2 is one of them.

As for you Xbox Folks Konami is developing Metal Gear Solid X. No word on what it is right now but remember Silent Hill X ended up being Silent Hill 2 and then some. So don't worry, but if you want to be safe. Get it first on PS2.

What bunch of hype

Cons:
Too much and too often talking between charactors.

Video segments too long

Third person view ( especialy from the top is annoying)I prefer fist person veiw

The Snake was great but Raiden was some kind of transsexual.
In the portion of the game where he is stripped down and you have to actualy play the game with him running around nude with his hand covering his crotch. (...)

Pros:

Finaly quit playing before the game ended and went to rent a fun game.
