It hasn't even been released, and almost 100 people have already written reviews. You video game geeks need to settle down, stop salivating and wait for the ... game to come out.

I have all the Metal Gear games starting from the original for Nintendo. Hope this review helps.

Here is a top 11 reasons why this is a major disappointment::

1) Only five big bosses to kill
Olga, Fatman, Vamp, 5 Metal Gears and Solidous Snake
2) The DVD movie clips are longer than the playing time
3) You do not need to use all your weapons
4) The story gets complex if u never followed the Metal Gear series
5) The story doesnt really have an ending.
6) Running around nude is not what I had in mind when I bought this game (you will see what I mean by this)
7) No tanks to destroy...I miss destroying tanks
8) Over half the building u are in is bombed. You never get to go into the entire complex. Your limited on where to go.
9) You never get to kill Lady Luck
10) Too easy..only took me 15 hours to solve. The game saves your time.
11) No multi-player head to head combat

DO NOT BUY THIS GAME!

I've actually played this game! What an amazing concept! Unlike every single other person who has posted - they've only played the demo - that makes all the difference in the world...

I agree that the Metal Gear series in one of my favorites - but this time I was severly disappointed.

Problems with the game:
Cut scenes - I would say that this game is probably 50% cut scenes. Whereas the last game might have been a 20%. You really tend to notice after about 10 mintues that you're still watching just one cut scene - and not playing. It gets extremely annoying after awhile. While the graphics are very cool, the length is somewhat annoying.

Game Length - As I said, the cutscenes were about 50% of the entire game - the rest of the game, hardly any game what-so-ever. I would say after about 3 hours of playing, I was about 80% done with the game. I would say I was done in less then 5 hours. If you've played the demo - the demo probably took like 30min-1hr to beat - that was 1/4th of the game - seriously.

Stories - After you beat the first half of the game (which took me like an hour), you completely stop the storyline, and pick up with a brand new one, playing some lame character that Konami apparently envisioned taking Metal Gear's torch onto further games. Not only are you not playing Solid Snake (annoying to those of us who have played the series), the story completely stops, and makes no explanation as to what happened with the first half of the series. The entire Metal Gear plotline is thrown out the window, and it turns into just some game with bad guys and hostages...

Characters - Metal Gear Solid 2 - no character background, development, etc. With all these cutscenes, we have nothing to go on - not for the heroes, those people on the communicator, or the evil bosses. The Metal Gear series had great character development - this one (num. 2), nothing. There are problems with the second guy and this girl on the communicator - the explanation for it - lame.

My advice - rent this game. You should be able to beat it quite easily within whatever 5 day limit you have. As much as I want to see Konami make more MGS games, Just rent, not buy. Cutscenes took up far too much time, leaving little gameplay.

A lot of hype but only a little game...

I have waited for this game for an extraordinarily long time. I anticipated it would be the best game I had ever played. But I was wrong. The part of the game where you are actually playing is mediocre at best. It never really takes a jump above what the last game was. The graphics are fantastic, but beyond that there are hardly any improvements. The diversity of the missions is mildly entertaining (though boring at times). Also, the storyline leaves a horrible taste in my mouth. In the first MGS there were alot of plot twists and towards the end you made some crazy revelations, as you realized what was actually going on. The difference between MGS and MGS2 is that the storyline in MGS makes sense... In MGS2 they try so hard to duplicate the story of MGS that they go way overboard with all the plot twists and craziness. After it is all over you will most likely be wondering why you bothered playing at all. By the time I reached the end of the game the story had become so convoluted and ridiculous, that I just wanted to get it over with so I could quit playing. Also being forced to sit through cut scenes of conversation lasting upwards of 30 - 40 minutes between sections where you can play for 2 - 3 minutes... The last couple hours of this game are mind numbing, and sitting and watching hours of this horrible story drained my will to live. It might have been bareable, had the story not been so ignorant. I am no stranger to watching long story sequences, as I'm a huge fan of RPG's like Final Fantasy, but this was ridiculous. Before I ever reached the end of the game I knew that if I ever did decide to play through it again, I would have to skip all of the story scenes, lest I be forced to throw my PS2 against the nearest wall.

My recommendation? Don't let anybody who is a suicide risk play this game, it will push them over the edge.

This game is Horrible.

This MOVIE was bad... oops, I mean this video game was bad

Before I bought this game I checked here and saw the game had 5 stars, so I bought it. I played it and it was boring, more of a movie than a game. So I checked back here to see what reviewers actually had to say (which I should have done the first time) and saw that just about every review was from someone who gave 5 stars after only playing the demo, and even a few from people saying that they "heard it is going to be amazing"; how can you review a game with out playing it? So the 4.5 star rating this game has now would more likely be around a 3 - 3.5 if you only count the reviews that were posted by people who actually played the game.

There are two points of interest i'd like to write about:

1. The movie-sequences, if timed, would last longer than the time it takes to actually PLAY the game. I did beat the game, and several times I would find myself bored and frustrated that I had to sit and watch video clips that had NO value to the story line.
The worst part of this is that two of these clips last nearly an entire hour each. I am not kidding. Think about when you sit down and are ready to have some fun playing a game and instead you play for five minutes, watch a 10 min video sequence, play for 15 min, watch a 45 minute video sequence, etc. It gets very frustrating, especially when it has no game value, like when Raiden saves his game over the codec, he chats with Rose about their relationship and pointless things like that, this while your supposed to be in combat?

2. I would have given this game no stars if it weren't for the excellent graphics and exciting game play (what little of it there is). The game should be longer, though.

My advice is to rent this game over a weekend, because the actual game play is enjoyable, but beware that it's more movie than game.

A big disappointment :( What happened to MGS?

I gave it a one star because I was a MGS fan, and I am very disappointed about this game. Let me first say I loved Metal gear one. I loved it so much I played it three times. The music, characters, and story were great. I was hooked. I preordered MGS2 like six months ahead of time and I could not wait to get it. After I played the MGS2 for few hours, I was bored with it. What? What did I just say? A MGS fan? I missed Snake, the music, Mei ling, and the original crew. The MGS2 story's lousy. In plain words, it was simply boring. Like I said, I gave it a one star because I was disappointed. I assume if you are a MGS fan you would bought this game already. That is all I have to say about it.

Not for everyone

Anyone looking for quick action will be disappointed. While the graphics of MGS2 is good, the story is too twisted to be enjoyable, and there is little gratifying action. Instead you spend most of your time searching and watching. Maybe my expectations were too high, but I found MGS2 a huge letdown. Verdict: save your money.

What bunch of hype

Cons:
Too much and too often talking between charactors.

Video segments too long

Third person view ( especialy from the top is annoying)I prefer fist person veiw

The Snake was great but Raiden was some kind of transsexual.
In the portion of the game where he is stripped down and you have to actualy play the game with him running around nude with his hand covering his crotch. (...)

Pros:

Finaly quit playing before the game ended and went to rent a fun game.

MGS2 is a totally overhyped game!

Why? This game is just a sequel, it is nothing really new. All what you could do in the prequel you will be able to do in MGS2. It`s all about sneaking around, killing stupid enemies, fighting some bosses and finally destroying a radiculous tank. That`s so boring. The game is very violent and that is why kids, the only people who will enjoy MGS2, shouldn't be allowed playing this game. I give one star for this no-brainer, because of its title that make me laugh every time I read or hear it.

Overhyped [...]

A not bad game that is totally and complete ruined by the insane amount of movie clips attempting to 'emerge' you in the games incredably lame plot. If I wanted to see a bad movie with a ridiculously stupid plot and bad acting I'll rent a Steven Seagal movie. This disk does not even give you the satisfaction of breaking after you slam it into the edge of your coffee table.
