FF IX is a blast from the past... almost

Just so you know where I'm coming from, I always felt that Final Fantasy III for the SNES was the best in the series. I didn't much care for the futuristic, cyberpunk approach of Final Fantasy VII and VIII, so I'm glad that Part IX takes the series back to its medieval sword-and-sorcery roots.

And for the first disc or so, Part IX delivers. Everything I loved about the early games, from Chocobos to Moogles to black and white mages, was back... with new and improved graphics and sound, of course.

Unfortunately, the story eventually gets too complicated (i.e., confusing) for its own good. Whereas the first half of the game focuses more on the main characters and how they interact (something Final Fantasy does best), the last half of the story - disc four in particular - gets too tangled up in the bungled "plot". (I don't want to give story details away, but just let me say this: when the bad guys finally explained their reasons for why they were trying to take over/destroy the world, I didn't have the slightest idea what they were talking about. I still don't.)

So how does Final Fantasy IX rate overall? Great gameplay, great characters, lots of mini games and side-quests to keep your interest. Time-wise, you can expect to take anywhere from 50 to 100 hours to finish this puppy off (depending on whether you waste time playing all the side-quests). I only wish the storyline had been clearer and more thought out.

This game owned FFVII so badly. The graphics on this game owned FFVII's. The characters I will have to say is the best part of this game. Vivi is a black mage who I fell in love with. He was so pimp. Running around and blowing fireballs at everyone (You have to get the game for one part with Vivi and another black mage fight in MSV) This game goes back to the 4 players in your party which owns! The characters also aren't so real. They are small looking pimp characters with big heads. Through-out the game the bad guy change, which is awesome because you never know who to suspect next. Another awesome part about this game is that it's hard but not so hard that you have to have a stratagy guide. You will enjoy not having to build your characters so high either. I think I beat it at like level 70 (but thats only because I like to build my characters up) and owned the end guys. Well I don't want to give away more then what I already have to so get the game and own it!

I'm more of an FFVII fan

It seems we have fallen into two groups. Those that liked Final Fantasy VII and VIII and those who prefer IX! First off, I'm only on Disc 2, so we will see if certain things change for me. The characters are not very cool or well-developed. Zidane is annoying, he's no Cloud! Steiner should just shut up, definitely not as cool as Barrett! Plus the overall storyline is kinda ... and not very defined. This one is much easier than Final Fantasy VII and they did make some neat changes to it. There is online support for beginning gamers, which comes via our little save friends, kupo! So if you are playing Final Fantasy for first time, it is easy to understand. Final Fantasy VII was too hard, and IX is too easy. You can tell this just by looking to the Chocobos. Final Fantasy VII was much darker, and IX is too light. Final Fantasy 7 had way too many animation sequences, while it seems that IX has barely any! I think a combination between the two would do much good! Final Fantasy IX works better for younger kids, and I suggest VII and VIII for older kids.

Something is seriously wrong with Sakaguchi

A lot of FF9 fans are immediately going to say my review is poor simply because I'm disagreeing with them. Please know that this is not the case... I've spent many years of my life playing, analyzing and reviewing the installments of the Final Fantasy series, and with FF9 I am most dissatisfied.

It's very difficult to find where to begin in expressing exactly why this is the worst installment of the Final Fantasy series ever. For starters, I'm going to warn the consumer that if you've played other FF games in general (the good ones... 8 doesn't count!), and compare them to FF9, then you are most assuredly not going to like this game.

The first thing wrong with this game is the mere theme of it. FF9 has a character and plot theme that is so frustratingly childish and kiddy-friendly that one could mistake this for a Gamecube game. In all honesty, that's an understatement. The music only contributed to this flaw... the music track could go into a Disney movie, most assuredly, without notice. Last time that I checked, Disney does not belong in FF, despite what Uematsu (composer for FF9) thinks. I should also point out at the beginning of my review that I guaruntee that this is the shortest game in the series. The first CD to this game will still be spinning in the CD case from the leftover momentum of its rotation in the PS when you complete Final Fantasy 9. It IS too short.

I'm not ignorant enough to be driven away just by theme. The battle system and process of character growth is easily the most uncreative and fun-lacking system in the series. You learn your abilities from weaponry and items, which means that before you can upgrade to the next level of weaponry you must finish the painfully slow process of acquiring all the abilities on that particular item. Challenging, I do admit, but not the least bit fun.

FF9 promised its oldschool fans that it would once again display the old-themed characters like Black and white mages, thieves, etc. Don't be fooled... this is hardly true. What you get in this package is two PC mages of both classes, a brief encounter with a Red Mage, and some old names. Oh yeah, and the main character is a thief, but his abilities have nothing to do with being an oldschool FF thief. That's about it for this game.

Mark my words: The Chocobo sidequest is NOT fun. It consists of your running around in a single location for several hours, gathering treasure and collecting points. You can buy special stuff with the points, but you're going to have to spend an AWFUL long time in there to get anything useful. Another illusion set by squaresoft to make you believe its fun? I think so.

Most importantly, the plot was the killing stroke for a game that had no potential in the first place. The plot twist to this game is a left-fielded, ridiculous and random event with no foreshadowing whatsoever. Worst of all, it didn't even bother me story-wise, mostly because there was no reason for me to like any of these characters. I mean, I was more emotional about my Black Mages in FF Tactics, and they didn't even SAY anything.

If you're looking for oldschool, on that note, I strongly suggest FFT. Not as good a plot as FF7, but definitely much more solid gameplay. If you're looking for an FF game that is not bad, do not buy FF9, by all means. It is NOT worth your time. In fact, I think FF10 is an apology for this horrendous waste of CD's. The playable demo on jampack is superb!

Final Fantasy Nine is probably almost as good as Final Fantasy Seven, and I am NOT KIDDING. The characers are extremely lovable and have a lot of depth to them, especially Vivi, and within the first 10 minutes of Vivi's gameplay you will know what I mean. The main character might be slightly annoying in the beginning (he is somewhat of a whiner) but he changes IMMENSELY after the first disk. So dont let the review that says Zidane is annoying stop you! The story seems very simple in the beginning, but it grows to be more complex as you journey your way through each of the game's four disks. Saving the world turns into saving memories, the world, people, and possibly another world....There are many plot twists about every single one of the games characters, that you will be amazed over and over again, and finally just left to die in shock. But you will die happy. The graphics in the game are stellar, with some places having full motion video in the backgrounds. The newer fantasy-esque environments conquer the drab and boring enviornemnts of FF8. The cinema cut-scenes are the same excellent and stunning as FF8, not much has changed here. The music is good, and keeps the beat with the story and characters. The ending theme is the best, in my opinion. Fans of the music of FF8 may think otherwise. My only complaint of the game is that its too short. Lasting 40 hours, it doesnt have enough events too get the characters prepared for the Final Dungeon (which led to me leveling up for 3 hours). If you are a fan of Final Fantasy 7, get this game. If you arent, get it anyway.

Doesn't stack up

I would just like to say that I was extremely disappointed in this game. As a lead character, Zidane is inexscusably weak. Where is the internal struggle? Bottom line:There is none. The lead character is a pathetic optimist who never has to stop and wonder why he's doing this. The love story between Zidane and Dagger is obvious and runs smoothly. Right from the start, there are no problems in their relationship. Squall made a much stronger lead character. In short, I feel that the entire cast is weak. There is never any sort of connection between these characters and the real world. The art is just bad, to put it simply. In FF8, Square made a big step with realism, not only in the actual characters, but also in the artwork. In FF9, we get stuck with people whose hands make up 40% of their body weight. The weapons are outsized and, unlike Cloud's weapon, don't even look cool. The artists didn't even bother to give half the cast faces. Vivi, Freya, and Amarant don't have faces; instead, two have odd hats and one has dreadlocks. Even the FMVs were better in FF8. Now, onto gameplay. It's WAAAAY easier to play FF9. You don't have to Junction magic, etc. Also, your characters can be pretty low levels and still kick butt. Honestly, I think it's ridiculous. There aren't nearly as many subgames or sidequests, and the battle system is awkward. Frankly, it's an OK game, but doesn't stack up to the rest of the Final Fantasy series.

My First FF Game

First of all, don't even pay attention to those bad reviews. They don't know what they're talking about. Bad plot? Confusing battle system? Ha! The only problem with those reviewers is that they don't have enough brain cells to spend on paying attention to the plot or trying to learn a new battle system. But it's not really their fault. They probably didn't know that hitting your head too many times can eventually cause brain damage.

Anyway, this was my very FIRST Playstation game, and my first Final Fantasy game. It was worth every single penny. If you don't already have this game, buy it. I can't even think of enough good adjectives to describe this game. It's wonderful!

This is TRULY the BEST game that I have EVER played. Characters worth caring about, a plot to beat all plots, and overall gaming PERFECTION.

Oh, and listen for the song "Melodies of Life." It's called "A Song From Her Memory" earlier in the game -- the one with no words, just "La La La La" and they write words to it at the VERY end of the game. Just keep your ears open for it. It's a really pretty song. I bought the soundtrack just for that song.

My advice to you? JUST BUY THIS GAME. You will not regret it. In fact, I personally GUARANTEE that you will love this game.

This game should be put back

Out of my own opinon I think that this is not as good as final fantasy 8. If you were to choose, you should pick final fantasy 8. Final Fantasy 9 has no main character and the storyline is a little confusing. You have a monkey boy like character. Compared to Final Fantasy 8 the characters seem more lifelike and act like real people. So if you were to buy this game seriously re think this over and try final fantasy 8, if you already haven't. I first thought that this was a interesting game but afterwards it didn't seem that way anymore.I no longer have it. I gave it to a friend. so if you are really into dull games this is for you. I mean this is an alright game but not as good as 8 so anyway the good quality is that the grapics are cool. That's about it.
