BIG dissapointment

Yes, I liked FF9. I love Final Fantasy. I've been an FF follower ever since FF IV (Final Fantasy II in the US).

In my opinion, the series was getting better and BETTER AND BETTER. It was MATURING with each new installment; getting more realistic, more dramatic, more epic, more action-packed, and the storylines were getting DEEPER. More mysteries, more depth, more layers.

I fell in love with FF 7; the blend of techno and fantasy (FF 6 tried to do it to a degree) was AMAZING. Truly ingenious..........and then I played FF 8; my GOD. What a FANTASTIC GAME; FF 8 (despite the GF flaw) was the best in the series: THAT was the type of FF game I want play!

Then I buy FF 9.........Compared to FF 8, it was crap; plain and simple. The storyline was DULL: A 13 year-old could have come up with it. The graphics were nice, but repetitive. It was flat; there was no complexity. It felt too plain and typical.

The Square team probably just slapped this thing together in order to meet the fan response to FF 8. FF 9 is the worst in the series, but as far as a normal game; yes, it's quite good. But as far as the FF standard is concerned, it's THE WORST. During the CRAPPY ending sequence, I felt as though I had been violated by Square. This is the only FF game I've ever played that seemed as though it were a purely financial venture on Square's part.

I'm looking forward to FF 10, which looks AWESOME in the video clips I've seen: I think Square realized what a terrible mistake FF 9 was.

A sabatoged idea

Do you remember how in Final Fantasy 7 every time Cat Saith opened his fat mouth you flinched? Now imagine a game where every character spews forth stupidity at that very same level. You have just seen Square's tragic addition to a once great game. I will give you this... the CGs are amazing... the music is fair and the overall graphics are fabulous. Hoverever I am afraid to tell you that everything else is not on par.

The plot does not start out with a bang! Destroying a Mako Reactor was a bang! Final Fantasy 7 immediatly immersed one in a completely frabulous world... Final Fantasy 9 starts one out in a world of boredom. There is an incredibly boring intro... at no point in any game should one start out by having to explore a town!

Some people may like the characters. However the characters did match with me. Cloud was cool. Squal interesting. Zidane made me want to laugh. Zidane is a warrior but is a monkey! Those two things don't really mix. A warrior should act like a warrior. In short the main characters looked like kids; I couldn't take any of them seriously! Final Fantasy lacked a villian of the calibar of Sephiroth. Sephiroth and Kefka and Globez were all great villians. There was true intigue and evil in these characters... ( I know Golbez turns good in the end)

The battle system is incredibly simple. The skills and abilities are incredibly simple. The cinimatic intro into each battle is exausting. Battles are a hassle in this game like no other game in this series. Perhaps Square could look to Final Fantasy tactics' job system for help.

Many of the ideas that worked in the 2d Final Fantasy 2 did not work in a richer world. Sorry... but I can't verbalize this argument because it is such a gut feeling... ummm... rent this game you'll understand how I feel.

In my opinion, Final Fantasy 9 must have been an effort by Square to attract the next generation to the Final Fantasy series because only a kid would like the "kid characters" and the mundane battle system. Final Fantasy didn't work for me... PLEASE rent this game before you buy it.

Something is seriously wrong with Sakaguchi

A lot of FF9 fans are immediately going to say my review is poor simply because I'm disagreeing with them. Please know that this is not the case... I've spent many years of my life playing, analyzing and reviewing the installments of the Final Fantasy series, and with FF9 I am most dissatisfied.

It's very difficult to find where to begin in expressing exactly why this is the worst installment of the Final Fantasy series ever. For starters, I'm going to warn the consumer that if you've played other FF games in general (the good ones... 8 doesn't count!), and compare them to FF9, then you are most assuredly not going to like this game.

The first thing wrong with this game is the mere theme of it. FF9 has a character and plot theme that is so frustratingly childish and kiddy-friendly that one could mistake this for a Gamecube game. In all honesty, that's an understatement. The music only contributed to this flaw... the music track could go into a Disney movie, most assuredly, without notice. Last time that I checked, Disney does not belong in FF, despite what Uematsu (composer for FF9) thinks. I should also point out at the beginning of my review that I guaruntee that this is the shortest game in the series. The first CD to this game will still be spinning in the CD case from the leftover momentum of its rotation in the PS when you complete Final Fantasy 9. It IS too short.

I'm not ignorant enough to be driven away just by theme. The battle system and process of character growth is easily the most uncreative and fun-lacking system in the series. You learn your abilities from weaponry and items, which means that before you can upgrade to the next level of weaponry you must finish the painfully slow process of acquiring all the abilities on that particular item. Challenging, I do admit, but not the least bit fun.

FF9 promised its oldschool fans that it would once again display the old-themed characters like Black and white mages, thieves, etc. Don't be fooled... this is hardly true. What you get in this package is two PC mages of both classes, a brief encounter with a Red Mage, and some old names. Oh yeah, and the main character is a thief, but his abilities have nothing to do with being an oldschool FF thief. That's about it for this game.

Mark my words: The Chocobo sidequest is NOT fun. It consists of your running around in a single location for several hours, gathering treasure and collecting points. You can buy special stuff with the points, but you're going to have to spend an AWFUL long time in there to get anything useful. Another illusion set by squaresoft to make you believe its fun? I think so.

Most importantly, the plot was the killing stroke for a game that had no potential in the first place. The plot twist to this game is a left-fielded, ridiculous and random event with no foreshadowing whatsoever. Worst of all, it didn't even bother me story-wise, mostly because there was no reason for me to like any of these characters. I mean, I was more emotional about my Black Mages in FF Tactics, and they didn't even SAY anything.

If you're looking for oldschool, on that note, I strongly suggest FFT. Not as good a plot as FF7, but definitely much more solid gameplay. If you're looking for an FF game that is not bad, do not buy FF9, by all means. It is NOT worth your time. In fact, I think FF10 is an apology for this horrendous waste of CD's. The playable demo on jampack is superb!

if you like ff 8,10,11,or 12 then DON'T buy this game!!! this game is so different from the other series and you can't stay as one character for most of the game!! also the biggest disappointment is the way they make the game so it would not be fun for teens, but only for really small kids. it's so dumb, god i can't say enough how i got suckered into buying this.
the other reviewers must be on drugs. i wish i could make this note be seen everytime someone browse this game.

I put 1 star so someone would look at mine. I'd give this game at least 4 stars though. Lets face it though, FF7 was pretty good, FF8 didn't exactly match up to the expectation of FF7 and FF9 was better than FF8, but still worse than FF7. The chararcters and story line are probably the only two things that'll frustrate you. The music was okay, but the difficulty of this game was just wrong. It isn't exactlty an RPG if SquareSoft makes a game so easy to beat. But, hey it's Final Fantasy, how can you hate it.

Play VIII again

This game must be compared to its predecessors, VII and VIII, and it doesn't. As a 30 yr old avid gamer, I realized that FF9 was obviously made for the 12 year old crowd. Never have I anticipated a video game more than FF9. I GAVE this game to some younger folks. Beware older gamers, this is a silly, tiring, annoying complicated Romper Room. FF8 is THE game in the series. To sum it up, I was never in fear of any enemy because I didn't care. Remember "Shining Force" for Genesis? That game blows this Saturday morning cartoon away.

Oh really? I think not

(...) I am quite sorry for all of the people that liked it but still, i hated it. Square is losing it. I was expecting this game to be the best.It was the worst. I was expecting the movie to be one of the best movies ever. Nope. All of the Final Fantasy before are still better. I still play 3,4, and 7. They are truly great games. Also, even though this has nothing to do with final fantasy, Chrono Cross,........ i have no words for it. They killed the old ways. you cant mix old style stuff with new graphics. its just not right. Enough said.

This is the worst Final Fantasy game I have played. Square did not seem to care and only wanted to get one more game out for PS1. Granted, the graphics have improved since FF8, but the story has not. The plot is dull and starts to jump in the end. The battle system is [poor], consiting of equiping weapons to learn abilities which you activite with x number of spheres. Towards the end of the game, it gets almost impossible to earn enough money to buy the weapons. The bosses are also not very challenging. The only thing that saves this game is the Chocobo hot and cold game. Not as much fun as FF7 racing, but it did keep me busy. This is one Final Fantasy I will not replay.

Final Fantasy IX is pitiful

The first Final Fantasy game I ever played was FF5. I loved it. Then I played 6, and I loved it more. The storylines of 7 and (especially) 8, were nearly as good as 6, and their graphics were far better (especially 8). When I heard that 9 was coming out, I almost went crazy. I was so excited at the prospect of a new Final Fantasy. And then... I saw an add for it. A ... little ... with a tail for a hero, a 3-year old looking princess who's the heroine (Garnet, not Eiko - i won't even mention HER), and giant knight with a lot of makeup and a tiny head. One word- childish. There is no story line, at least no storyline that's more advanced than our favorite nursery rhyme. Everything is stupid and childish, and even though the graphics are great, they're completely wasted on this crummy game. Squaresoft, you rule, but this game ... Go back to the 6, 7, and 8 style, not the kindergarden style. FF9 ... Don't buy it, unless you're looking for a good laugh, and you're money back.
