The Fight Continues!

5 Rating: 5, Useful: 42 / 47

If you remember the previous problems of MEDAL OF HONOR, like horribly choppish graphics and just some pesky peeves. Then forget em' all. MOH2 is all newly refined featuring more powerfully geared engines. Like riding a motorcycle and firing from it, and having your Frech Resistance allies next to you in the fight.

The enemy AI is stunning with new abilities like jumping over walls, to guarantee a new approach every time you play.

The new weapons consist of crossbows, Molotov Cocktails, and a Panzerfaust. Plus a camera when you go undercover as a NAZI propaganda photographer. Where the enemies stike hilarious poses to keep you laughing for hours.

THE STORY

Once again you are a WWII OSS undercover agent working against those stinky NAZIS. In MOH remember the girl that briefed you before missios? Well you play her in the game, but it is a prequel because this was before she escaped from Occupied France to america. So Jimmy Patterson has not even been found by the OSS yet. You have to fight your way through france as a member of the frech resistance fo the freedom of every man and woman alive.

Are you ready to rise above the call of duty?

thankfully, they didn't screw up a good thing

The 1st Medal of Honor was such a great game. Especially for anyone interested in the history of the time, or more partial to a deeper game than your average Unreal frag-fest and such. And the perfection was that not only did the movie-style presentation strike a chord with novices and experts alike, the game wasn't really that hard to complete. All it took was time, and perhaps some luck. Thankfully, they have revived the series with MOH:Underground, and blissfully, they infused it with the exact same spirit and atmosphere that made the first one such a winner.

Gripes? Not any that would influence a purchase. But there are some nit-picky things. Graphics could be clearer, hit detection could be improved so you don't get hung up on a simple doorway. The enemies are a bit too accurate sometimes, and I hope you don't ever have the misfortune of walking past one, only to have him pop up behind you and tear you to pieces at point-blank range. Why do the Nazis love to jump out of open windows? If you've ever played a city portion of this game, you'll see what I mean (watch the oversized lit windows!)

But the good far outweighs the bad. And adjustable difficulty means you can set the challenge to suit your taste. And beware the difficulty! The game starts off fairly innocently, but once the background info tells you to "Be Careful, Manon!" you had better heed their warning!

This time around, the levels tend to be more maze-like, resulting in ample backtracking. It is fun to have an allied operative along with you in a few missions. Coming face to face with Panzer tanks is an experience! As is getting the chance to ride in a sidecar down a mountain road, blasting Nazis out of your way the entire journey (those guns NEVER run out of ammo!)

Long story short, it's a top-notch game. Especially if you liked the first one. Here's to sequels that AREN'T disappointments!

WOW!! The guys at EA did it again! Forget the notion that sequels never live up to the original. MOHU doesn't skip a beat as compared to the first MOH. The idea of playing a female French Resistance agent is a fresh notion, and it provides an excellent game premise. As Manon, you begin as a lowly French Resistance fighter in Paris. Shortly after that, you get recruited by the American OSS (WWII version of the CIA), who provides you with the chance to visit exotic locales and cripple Hitler's war machine by covert (and sometimes not so covert) means. The game designers really did their homework when researching weapons and theaters of operations. However, there are a few slight mistakes. First, German troops did not use the British Sten 9mm sub-machinegun. Panzerfausts (that are used in the early game levels) did not come until later in the war, German hand grenades would not kill a Panzer IV tank, (unless you were really lucky), and what the heck is a "Big Joe Crossbow?" But, they did make the heavy German machine guns look like MG42s, unlike the American .30 caliber M1919 in MOH. Also, you get to use old WWI-vintage Hotchkiss M1914 machine guns, which were prized by the French freedom-fighters during the war. Choices in weapons are really good, and it adds more flavor to the game. My personal favorite is the STG44 "Sturmgewehr" assault rifle. Also, the new "disguise" feature is very slick. With this new feature, you assume the role of a German propaganda photographer. When soldiers let down their guard for a goofy pose, you have a second or two to pop them in the skull with your suppressed pistol. Graphics can be grainy at times, and up close, enemy troops look simply awful. The cure for that is don't let 'em get that close!! Seriously, the Playstation is showing it's age, and this game really squeezes everything out it can. Controls are the same as MOH, so old vets will have no trouble tackling the Third Reich. Sound and music is just as good (if not a little better) than MOH, and the missions are just as challenging and pulse-quickening. However, the Germans are better shots this time, so be ready to duck and return fire quicker. All in all, this is great game, and MOH vets are again in for a wonderful treat.

Excellent game, superior to the first in every way.

The first Medal of Honor became the only Doom-type game I ever liked playing. And now with this sequel, even the minor reservations I had about the first one have been dispelled as DreamWorks boosted and augmented the strong points of the original while adding some much-laudable touches.

First of all, the impeccable sound design. The footsteps of an approaching enemy, the hair-raising score which adds to and improves on the original (already brilliant), the realistic gunshots...Medal of Honor gives you a cinematic experience, a grandiosity that eludes most shooters. Secondly, Jimmy Patterson from the original MoH was something of a colourless character, but in this one he gives way to Manon Batiste, who (thanks to her presence in the first MoH) is a much more fun character to play. And hoorah for action-game heroines that don't follow the male sex-fantasy Lara Croft/Danger Girl/Dead or Alive model! The story has improved greatly because of the added character depth, historical details (which also informed MoH), and a better script with emphasis on plot progression and increasing tension. Thirdly, level designs are more exciting, with much more variety in the surroundings -- France, Greece, Africa, in the catacombs, out on the street, in a hotel. Finally, the action is amazing -- much more furious and exciting than in the original. That big battle with the tanks while escaping from the desert base was really something, one of the best action-game stages I've ever played.

Some small negatives: It's still not easy to spot certain enemies because of a somewhat futile radar ("compass" in this game) system; some locales are drawn in a way so that it's sometimes a bit too hard to spot openings, doorways and the like. But the tightened action, smarter enemies, truckloads of secrets and bonus material (check out the wonderful "credits" featuring interviews with female spies of Allied past, the "making of" movies, and of course the secret codes section). And though I might be dismayed at perishing in an ambush or retreading several levels because I missed things, that only made me come back for more. That, I think, says enough about my attraction to this game. Considering how much I tend to dislike Doom-type first-person shooters, that's a real coup.

Pretty Much the Same as Before...

... so in other words, it's "Superb!" I can't give it 5 stars because there isn't much improvement in graphics or gameplay. They could've just issued this game out with the original Medal of Honor as disc 2 and you wouldn't know the difference.

However, the story line is great and the suspense in gameplay is as intense as before. There are some new weapons and AI buddies that fight with you briefly during some missions. Enemies are pretty much the same but with different vehicles and modes of destruction. Other than that, you've got the same game. The music once again enhances the action on the screen. Sound effects are untouchable as well.

If you liked the original Medal of Honor, pick this game up.

Main gripe: Kind of easy like the first one. You'll probably finish it in a week or so. If you want to save money but enjoy the game, rent it a few times.

Even more hair raising than the original!

I remember in the first MOH running by the Tiger Tank in one of the missions and thinking..."Thank God noone's in that thing! Sheesh!". Jimmy Paterson had it easy! Manon has to go toe to toe with Panzers, Half-tracks, and the occasional motorbike w/ sidecar machine gunner! This game gets the blood pumping and scares the hell out of you even more effectively than the first! And it still has its humorous side as well...I also speak German and a little French so I understand most of the background dialogue. (regarding the first game in the series, I laughed hysterically at the "Conversational German for the American Soldier" blurb at the start of the original MoH and the preview was just COOL with the vector graphics solidifying into the finished scene, the sweeping camera pan to the big, scary Nazi eagle column, etc.) I have a few bones to pick w/ some of the historical details...the OSS General in the original wore a blue USAF uniform that wasn't adopted until the creation of the US Airforce from what was the Army Air Corps AFTER WW2. And I'm dissapointed there was no British element in any of the 2 games; The British were more actively involved in helping the French, at least in the beginning of the war. Something involving the near-disaster at Dunkirk would have been an interesting twist.

Likewise, I hope that a PACIFIC THEATRE version of the game does get made...USMC (or Australian) commando against the forces of Imperial Japan.(scouting out a beachhead and blowing up obstacles prior to an amphib landing, etc) Also good would be a Soviet version set on the Eastern Front, playing an Red Army officer or something...the Soviets had some cool weapons also. They could have a mission that deals somehow with the meeting of U.S. and Soviet forces at the Elbe river...and a final thrilling scenario...Berlin 1945...so many good possibilities for future MOH-type installments.

I sometimes get a little frustrated when Manon & Jimmy keep getting picked off by snipers I cannot see...but then again, that's why they're called snipers...I never especially enjoy attacking entrenched positions, either, but the game gives you a real (if virtual) feel for just how difficult it is to effectively take out a machine gun nest w/ a well-lobbed grenade (or molotov cocktail). Like Syphon Filter 2, there are some missions I don't think you can complete until you die a few times trying and learn from those experiences knowing in advance where the enemies are going to come from, etc.

I also agree with the other reviewer who talked about knowing how to play the original MoH is a big help for this one. That's certainly true. It took me a little while to get enough skills to finish the original MoH, but this one, I dove right in and got really really far before I hit a level when I had to quit and save for later because it was too hard. I loved the vehicles in this game. The AI buddies were OK, but I found they usually got in the way...sometimes they were helpful, but I haven't really played a mission where it's a challenge or a mission requirement to keep an AI buddy alive (except maybe Manon's brother in mission 1, but he can take care of himself just fine!--he's got a British sten while you have a wimpy Walther P38.) like in the Syphon Filter games (rescuing Lian Xing, etc)

I also wish there were more WW2 era Flight simulators (dogfighting/bombing) for PSX...Pacific and European Theatres... I also loved the MoH-U. North Africa Scenario especially...Jimmy's close air support was a welcome relief for Manon!

I highly recommend this game though I do recommend playing them out of sequence...play the original first then the "pre-quel" second...to enjoy the technical improvements over the 1st version.

The Second Time is always better!!

Man, after getting through the first Medal of Honor, I erased my old game and started over. 4 months later, I'm doing it again in the second installment of the hopefully long lasting Medal of Honor series. This game has improved in every way, the graphics, the sound, the AI, have all been jacked up so high, at times I simply blow away by the attention to detail! In the first one, the AI was good, but left something to be desired. For example, you shoot a guy in the leg and run, he will give up the chase after a while, and when you come back to the same spot, he's there on patrol again, no more aware of his surroundings than before. Not in this game, you walk into an area with a sentry, and the light sound of you cocking your gun, or even switching to another gun will quickly cause a flurry of bullets to come flying at you. That brings me to the game's only downside, the difficulty. The Nazis never miss! You take off at a dead run and a guy is on top of a ledge eating (literally), he's gonna put 10 bullets in you as soon as you see him! Aside from that, the game is awesome, the music sets the mood, the vehicles like motorcycles and tanks add a lot of variety, the graphics are amazing and the AI is fantastic! One mission in the game is in Paris, I was walking around in this business and redidential area, and you know what came to mind, Saving Private Ryan. The AI french resistance guys (the good guys) were cool and the area looked just like that part in the movie! GET THIS GAME!!!!

The Greatest Shoot 'em game on the Playstation!

This game is like the first Medal of Honour with new levels, weapons and bad guys. If you liked the first game, you will love this one.

One little problem, if you were good in the last game and played it as addictively as I did then the game will be a piece of cake and before you know it you'll finish it! But the kinds of levels you go through and the kind of bad guys you battle will make it all worth it.

AI has not really been introduced in the game, it's just that bad guys can pop up from anywhere, out of trucks, jump over walls, hide behind trees, and jump off balconies. The motorbiks levels are really awesome and you can fight alongside your fellow brothers.

The best part of the first game, the undercover missions, are preserved in this game as well. You pose as a photographer early on int hte game. You still have the silenced pistol and when they ask for your ID and turn around.... they're outta here.

The two player mode has a wider selection of weapons and larger levels. It's definately impoved from the last game.

Overall a really good game, much like the old Medal of Honour with some new features.

Buy It

Gone are the dodgy graphics of the first game and along comes a masterpiece. The graphics are nice and crisp, some of the best that i have seen on the psx. There are 22 new levels set throughout 7 missions each packed full of suprises and great battles. There are over ten different weapons to use in the game so there are plenty to keep the gun totting frenzied people happy. This is a must have game.
