Caution: Very Disturbing Images

3 Rating: 3, Useful: 2 / 9
Date: November 27, 1999

While I was excited and intrigued about the 3-D world of Silent Hill and the promise of alternate endings based on strategy, I put the game down after about 30 minutes of play and have not played it since. Be aware that the images are disturbing...so disturbing that I'm not so sure any of us should feel good about tuning them out. Mutilated body parts, blood, gore, mutant baby-things that bite and kill....why is anyone comfortable with this? Pass this one by.

Please.... give me a hug....

Note: This will give away the prologue of the game to show you how scary it is. As you are about to read this, turn all the lights in your house off. Now listen carefully to every word I say. Imagine you are a middle aged man (if you already aren't) whose wife died a few years ago. You are feeling sorry for your daughter Cheryl because she is sad and you decide to bond with her by taking her to your favorite tourist spot called silent Hill, a quaint little town knustled in the mountains, and spend quality time with her. You have been driving there for hours, but, due to car trouble, you reach the outskirts late at night. You are driving when you soon see a police officer merge by your car and signal for you to keep driving. She speeds off into the darkness. A few minutes later you see her motorcycle smashed on the side of the road. A few seconds later you see a person in the middle of the road. You swerve in panic and lose consciousness.

You wake up with a splitting headache. Your car is destroyed. It is snowing outside. But it's summer! You regain knowledge and soon realise your daughter is missing. She has run off. You look off into the distant foggy street and see a vague outline that appears to be your daughter, Cheryl. You scream for her, but she does not react. She walks away. You begin to chase after her, but you can't seem to catch up. It is as if she is dissapearing as you follow. You chase her into a backstreet filled with garages. You hear a metal gate slam closed. At the end of the street, there is a gate that enters into a back alley. Beware of dog is nailed to the gate. You enter. Suddenly you are shocked to find that the dog has been ripped to shreds, and it's bloody carcus is flung everywhere. You begin to worry. you notice your daughter's outline suddenly rush down into a street between two large builings. You chase after. A wheelchair is thrown on the side, destroyed. Was she running from something? You continue, when suddenly, everything gets very dark. You light a match and progress. You have been walking for a while whe you notice a stretcher sitting in the corner, with what appears to be a body under a blanket on it, covered in blood. You stare for a few moments and start again. Soon you see large puddles of blood sprawled on the ground. You are shaking so much, but you know that you have to find your daughter. Pretty soon there are carcuses in the blood. Skinless, carcuses. You begin to panic, but you stay calm. More and more caruses start appearing. You are crying now. You reach a mesh wall; a dead end. There is a giant skinless human body hanging on the wall. Suddenly, things begin to attack you with knives. You scream and run back, but where you had come from is now closed off with a wall. The sreatures are approaching. Paniced, you throw the match. Everything goes dark.

This is just the prologue of the game. There are many more much worse scenes in this game. It is up to you to decide if you are willing to face them.

Buy this game now.

SCARY! But all in all, just an OK game

Everyone is right - it is NOT Resident Evil, but then again what is? This game is pretty easy, straight forward and repetitive. But is has some VERY SCARY scenes, to the point I jump up and scream (yes guys, I am a chick!).

My suggestion: Rent it. You can probably complete it in a 5 day rental and never need to play it again.

Wat Better Than Resident Evil 2

If you like scary fun, shooting things and kicking thing on the floor, then you'll love this game! Silent Hill is a great addition for any survival horror fan's collection. Or just anybodies collection. While its almost as good as Resident Evil 4, people who still have a Ps2 or a working PSX, you should pick this up.The graphics might not be as good as Resident Evil,
it's still a must buy. It's the scariest game you will ever play
along with better camera angles, running and shooting, bloodier and scarier enemy design than any other survival horror game. If you play this with every light off in your house and your alone, keep a gun. Trust me, you will get scared. And you can use a chainsaw! How cool is that? You dont be a fan of survival horror games to enjoy Silent Hill. Infact, you dont even need to like video games to love or get scared by SilenT Hill.

The games graphics are ify i think and like said before in other reviews the word parafrasing but so are japanese movies but its not always the graphics or gameplay that matter if the story is right and not fragmented by the imagination of some star treck freak.Im 16 years old and seen alot of scary thing but this game is not for children they will not sleep and you will not sleep as they are coming into your room with there blanket sucking there thumb because of the mental images they would see from this game. Then again of course even if your 16 or older you would still see mental images.I could go into all the details but this is only 1000 words you could probably write a book about the horrors on this game. This game is scary as Hell but for some reason you just keep going on playing it though your telling yourself to stop playing this game you just keep on playing.Warning:this game will cause loss of sleep. But it is a very suspenseful game creppy is a good word for it but resident evil was creepy to,not this game there i an entirely new definition for this game SCARY.So if your looking for a great time spooky lines and gameplay or just some fun with friends GET THIS GAME.

The Truth about Silent Hill...

First of all let me point out the fact that Silent Hill is alot of fun no matter how you shake it. Now to my points, lets first discuss how funny it is that people claim how "Scary" this game is. In honest opinion this game is not as scary as the reviews would have you think. I'd say it's more disturbing than scary and this points to my only true gripe about the game. This "Disturbing" effect wares away after awhile, it does and when it does, out goes the "Horror" that you are supposed to feel.

Now don't get mad at me Silent Hill Fanboys! I did say the game was fun no matter how you shake it up... and that's the truth. Silent Hill for it's time was a game that stood under the HUGE shadow of Resident Evil. With respects it cast it's own light for it's fans BUT you cannot compare Silent Hill and Resident Evil as the same thing. Neither is really better than the other... it all depends on what you want to get your heart pounding (And NO Silent Hill is not for a more mature level of player Ha Ha both games are on the same level!) so go for the game if you wish to play a classic or looking for a quick thrill.

Now to sum up the ending of my rant/review I'd have to say the reason this game received a 3 is because in truth the sound and graphics are sub-par. The storyline is at best mediocre and it will have you shaking your head in the end (I had to find a website dedicated to explaining the storyline for this game... yeah that bad!). I know I know... it's dated... blah blah blah... but seriously what scared you more? Harry's funny running graphics or the silly looking demon-dogs? As I've said to friends, it's the initial shock of seeing something you had not seen before.

So thats it... I hope you buy this title as it does deserve a play through. However if your looking for a "Scary" and or "Horror" game I'd suggest you either pick up Silent Hill 2 or Resident Evil 4. They are scary at times and without the hassle of the almost unplayable, ANNOYING and POINTLESS puzzles alocated throughout Silent Hill.

Oh and one more thing... I saw today Monday April 24th 2006 that this game was selling USED for $78.00!! Ha Ha I would NEVER buy a PSX 1 game for that price! Don't be suckered into that rip off!

It's not Resident Evil that's for sure!

I read all the reviews and it is a cheap take off of Resident Evil. I did like the settings however in the fog and snow and using the flashlight, I think that added to the suspense but resident evil 2 and the nememsis does scare the hell out of you at times where silent hill never did. Once you play resident evil its hard to surpass that quality in graphics and gameplay.

Not Quite Resident Evil, but Good

I searched out this game after I read up on it a bit. "Genuinely scary... suspenseful atmosherics... disturbing..." screamed the fan-sites. For starters, if you've ever played a Resident Evil game, this is too familiar territory. There are differences yes, but once you set foot in the school or hospital areas, it's RE all over again (running about in frustration opening doors, checking the map every 5 seconds, puzzles accompanyed by daft poetry riddles etc.) The other thing that sounded good to me were the nasties. The sites again babbled on about "sinister zombie children that brandish kitchen knives and scream with glee as the slash you with them"... errr.. hello? They appear to be teddy bears with spikey claws that just seem to fall in front of you gnawing at your shoes! The rest are all RE moonlighters - zombie dogs, giant spiders, giant moths... nothing origional or vaguely creepy. The game's most interesting point to me is the 'alternate reality' sections with are rang in with a strange air raid siren. Basically what happens is that all your familiar surroundings are given a very Hellraiser-esque makeover, all bloody chains, crucified corpses and rusted metal. But it's really just the backdrops that feel creepy, the monsters patrol around with the same stupidity as ever. The monsters also cause a radio transmitter to crackle so that you know when you're not alone, but that kind of ruins any jumpy moments as you just stand there waiting for any would-be attackers to reveal themselves. Also, the crackle gets annoying after a while. Anyway, buy this if you're not familiar with Resident Evil, as it's far to familiar. Actually no, buy RE 2 or 3 instead.

What is this?

I wish that I could ask Konami, "Why did you waste so much time to make a game that is not scary at all?" The graphics in this game don't even look scary and make the game look terrible. I think that Konami was just trying to beat Capcom's magnificent Resident Evil series, but did a terrible job of it.
