Ok, ok.I don't LOVE the game. But still it didn't stop me from getting a 5 disc score.I suggest if you're new to the series, keep in mind you'll be shooting a majority of animals, not humans, to any hardcore Metal Gear Solid people. Well to start things off Lara goes to Peru, Incan Ruins, Egypt, and even Atlantis in search of an item called the scion.Whilst blasting the occasional wolf or lion into oblivion, I must admit that the levels can be annoying once you practically searched every crevice, hallway, etc. for the switch to your exit and that I had to use the level skip code more than once. But, what the hell. It's a great game.No mistake.

It's great to play if you have nothing to do well anyaway. The level's are so cool it's get's better each time you go to a new level. Each level have something you must do before you go on. There are alot of little places that you can fine little small heath pack's get those you will need it because there is always someone trying to stop you and kill you O, if you fine anything useful get that too.

Sometimes the informate is right there in your face you just got to look that's all.

This was my only game that I own for my playstation. That the time I did't know if I sould play it or leave it alone will I play it and you know what, I like it for once a woman is doing the thing and I said it's about time, do you know what I mean??

Well go have fun I did. Take your time and do it right I did and I got good at.

Tomb raider is a cool game with lots of puzzles, but not too many so that you can't solve it. I like the ledge hanging manuver, it comes in pretty useful times. The graphics are not so great and you can see the pixels if you back into a wall, and the camera swivels so sometimes you can't see the place you're jumping to etc. moving the figure has been kind of hard, so I went out to buy a new controller. If you're fortunate enough to have a special controller like mine(the movement butttons are not separate) then the character should move pretty fluidly.
If you don't have one, the game is fine but, like I said it gets awkward and lara get beat up much more if you get taken by a suprise attack.

It WAS good

Tomb Raider was definitely one of the best games to be made for the original Playstation. Obviously when you compare it to today's games it looks totally awful but the truth is it's still excellent.

The graphics still don't look too bad (considering it was made in 1995) but there are quite a few glitches (you can see through walls and animals etc..).

The gameplay is superb! The levels range from being very simple to extremely difficult. I have to admit I couldn't complete the game properely without a guide book but the first 5 levels are easy enough. You'll find yourself doing a number of different things such as running from boulders, swimming underwater and shooting strange men!

The storyline is very good but it isn't really explained too well. It's very clear who the baddies are but why they're baddies is still a mystery to me!

The weapons aren't that good- there's only a few you can obtain and none of them are outstanding.

Tomb Raider isn't at all realistic in the way that it can sometimes take 7 or 8 pistol shots to kill one animal. I don't think realism actually came into it, though.

The cut scenes are done quite well although the characters' mouth don't always move!

There are also quite a lot of bonus things packed into the Tomb Raider package, the best being Lara's home. It isn't incredible but the fact that you get to know the main character a bit better is great.

All in all I'd say this probably the best Tomb Raider to date (TR3 following a close second)and if you can find it cheap, buy it! (Oh, and don't let the bad movie put you off, either!)

More frustrating than fun

This game is more frustrating than fun, yet is strangely addictive. Since the first "Tomb Raider" game I played was "The Last Revelation" (#4 in the series), I will always compare that game with others in the series. I bought this game because I wanted to see how it all started. Though many people think this is still the best "Tomb Raider" ever, I just don't see the appeal. There are many frustrating aspects of the game that fortunately were cleared up by the time "Last Revelation" was put out. A few examples:

--You can't save the game whenever you want to, only if you happen to come across a giant floating blue crystal (which isn't often enough). I often found myself having to repeat entire sections of the game over and over because I kept dying before I could get to the next crystal.

--The animals in this game are really agressive and hard to kill. They gang right up on you, often cornering you while they quickly take damage, while you have to shoot at them for at least 10 seconds (or more) until they die. Also, the animals don't disappear after you kill them, so after a while the level becomes strewn with animal carcasses. (EW!)

--The human bad guys show up every once in a while to shoot at you--but you can't kill them because they're part of the storyline. So you have to shoot at them until they go away, while they take some damage from you.

--The game doesn't give you enough ammo for the big weapons. Considering how many rounds you have to use to kill a single animal, they need a lot more.

There are some good points, though--I love the variety of locations, the storyline is good, and the music is awesome (here's a tip: put the CD into your CD-player--the soundtrack is on track #2!). The puzzles are also a little easier to solve than in "TLR". Overall, I WOULD recommend this game to "Tomb Raider" fans since it's interesting to see how the game started, and how far it's come since then.

Still great

I had to go back and play this game after playing (and loving) Tomb Raider Anniversary. Playing Anniversary and then going back to the original really makes you appreciate just how awesome this game was. The level design was just amazing with all the different areas you get to explore. I haven't played the original since it first came out so I didn't realize just how much Crystal Dynamics took from this game. They took a lot. Some of the level designs are almost identical. The biggest difference between the old and the new is the difficulty. Anniversary is way easier. But not because the puzzles or enemies are easier. It's because of the controls. Back in Tomb Raider 1, the controls were pretty terrible. But what do you expect from a game breaking new ground in the world of 3D? So I'll over look it and give it a 5 out of 5.

It's a Classic.

Every year, there comes a time for Tomb Raiding season. I feel compelled to get out the game once more and re-live TR: complete with all its action and puzzle solving. Yes, I cannot count how many times I have beaten Tomb Raider; but the game never gets old. It's an exciting, fun, and thrilling adventure that I never tire of. I must say, there are not many games that fall into this category for me. So, this is just one of the many reasons why I consider Tomb Raider a classic.

Tomb Raider was released in 1996. Luckily, I discovered the game by accident that same year. I've been playing the series ever since. So, what makes this game so great, you ask?

Let me begin with atmosphere. Tomb Raider manages to create this brilliantly. You might have a key moment where the character (Lara) steps into an unknown room and there is just - silence. The silence, it turns out, is a key element. It creates a sense of tension on its own. You do not know what is behind a corner, a ledge, where a trap is, etc. You are constantly feeling a sense of anticipation. The silence also adds to the isolated feel of the game. You are alone. It makes one feel vulnerable; but also draws one into Lara's world because of that. You will feel attached to what is going on and begin to enjoy solving the puzzles and the mystery of the story by yourself. Atmostphere is a key element in the game.

Atmosphere would not work well without a stunning soundtrack either. Silence preceeds some pieces of music that can make one gaze in awe as he/she steps into a new room. Or, it can give a sense of danger, when enemies or traps are triggered. In some cases, the music gives off a false sense of danger, keeping one on his/her toes the entire time. The music is emotional, most particularly the Tomb Raider theme by Nathan McCree. It's probably one of the most powerful pieces of music in all of TR. The music can stand alone (even apart from the game) as beautiful compositions. They carry the impact of a scene, place, or emotion and work wonderfully together.

The story itself is actually quite good, especially since it is from an older era in gaming. You start off as Lara Croft, the daughter of wealthy aristocrats, who has been disowned due to her love for adventure. After surviving a nearly fatal plane crash in the Himalayas, coupled with the equally painful experience of having to survive alone in the snow capped mountains for two weeks, Lara returned to England changed. She decided to set out across the world to uncover the secrets of civilizations and made a name for herself. The game starts off with Lara receiving a job offer from Jaqueline Natla, the head of Natla Technologies, to receive an ancient artifact called the Scion. The trek takes you across the globe attempting to unravel its secrets.

The story is interesting in itself. It has its own twists and turns; but it also focuses on the characters, the mystery of the Scion, and the history behind it. Now today, one might find the story a little too short, with not much information. But, this was very well done, especially for the time it was made in. You actually care about the characters and what would happen in the story.

Now, aside from having a great story, I must mention my favourite aspect of the game. That is the puzzles. If you love puzzles and a good challenge, this game is definately for you. Each level is centered around some sort of giant puzzle, with other smaller puzzles surrounding it, sometimes even built into the major puzzle. Yet, the puzzles never get old. There's always something new thrown into the mix which makes them all the more fun. This could be in the form of water mazes, secret rooms, hidden levers, rabid animals, and let's not forget the downright diabolical death traps that are imbedded throughout the game. (Boulder traps anyone?) Ironically, even the death traps are extremely fun to traverse. Not only do they keep you on your toes; but there's a high replayability factor. You'll want to relive the thrill of danger and adventure at the same time over again. This feeling especially, gives the game high replay value.

The controls themselves are pretty solid. They're mostly easy to learn, with the exception of the jump/grab control which can be tricky. This may frustrate some newcomers to the older games; but with a little practice even this becomes easy. The only qualm I have regarding the controls is that sometimes it can throw the camera angles out of whack. This is especially true in a battle situation. If Lara is pinned in a corner or closed doorway, the camera might shift to the side shakily so that you don't know what's happening or you might be able to see through a locked door, for instance. Generally, this is a glitch because the camera is mostly stationed in third-person view behind Lara. But it is a small glitch and does not take away from the game as a whole.

The graphics may be dated; however, remember it has been over 10 years and the graphics were revolutionary for their time. Again, despite the graphics, the game itself is still just as fun as when I first played it.

To me, this game hasn't died out over the years. So, this is what I call a definate classic. I'd recommend the original Tomb Raider to anyone.
