Concept is good, but tedious game play really spoils the fun

2 Rating: 2, Useful: 3 / 10

I'm going to fly in the face of convention wisdom and assert that Tomb Raider is not a good game. I like the concept, the puzzle solving and exploration. I like that it's a great diversion from the standard shoot-em up. The problem is with the tedious game play. The game is tough, just from the mental standpoint and it takes some effort to figure out what you're supposed to be doing in each level. But that's part of the fun, figuring things out. Unfortunately, it's moving through the levels and getting from point A to point B that is problematic. There are way too many places where you have to make a pinpoint precision jump or other move with absolutely NO margin for error. In some cases this means you fall somewhere and have to climb back to your starting point, or in some cases you die, meaning you have to start the whole level over again. And after trying one of these jumps over and over and over, you finally get frustrated and give up. There were instances where I tried a jump over and over, and then suddenly made the jump and had no idea what I had done differently from the previous numerous attempts. For any game to be that touchy is just a disgrace. It's too bad, I think I could have liked this game but the tedious pinpoint controller movements ulitmately ruined the game for me. I know it's one of PSX "greatest hits" and very popular, but if don't like tedious games, you'll want to avoid this one.

This game is ok, I guess.... I don't really understand why you got to kill animals and things... This game is too dungeons and dragons for me... I like more action, games you don't have to think so much.... graphics are good, and I am sure alot of people might enjoy it.... It is just too slow for me.....

A GREAT REVIEW!

More frustrating than fun

This game is more frustrating than fun, yet is strangely addictive. Since the first "Tomb Raider" game I played was "The Last Revelation" (#4 in the series), I will always compare that game with others in the series. I bought this game because I wanted to see how it all started. Though many people think this is still the best "Tomb Raider" ever, I just don't see the appeal. There are many frustrating aspects of the game that fortunately were cleared up by the time "Last Revelation" was put out. A few examples:

--You can't save the game whenever you want to, only if you happen to come across a giant floating blue crystal (which isn't often enough). I often found myself having to repeat entire sections of the game over and over because I kept dying before I could get to the next crystal.

--The animals in this game are really agressive and hard to kill. They gang right up on you, often cornering you while they quickly take damage, while you have to shoot at them for at least 10 seconds (or more) until they die. Also, the animals don't disappear after you kill them, so after a while the level becomes strewn with animal carcasses. (EW!)

--The human bad guys show up every once in a while to shoot at you--but you can't kill them because they're part of the storyline. So you have to shoot at them until they go away, while they take some damage from you.

--The game doesn't give you enough ammo for the big weapons. Considering how many rounds you have to use to kill a single animal, they need a lot more.

There are some good points, though--I love the variety of locations, the storyline is good, and the music is awesome (here's a tip: put the CD into your CD-player--the soundtrack is on track #2!). The puzzles are also a little easier to solve than in "TLR". Overall, I WOULD recommend this game to "Tomb Raider" fans since it's interesting to see how the game started, and how far it's come since then.

An Outstanding Game Certainly to Become a Classic

From the ruins of Rome to the futuristic setting of Atlantis, Tomb Raider takes the gamer through a variety of wonderful worlds. Unlike its sequels, it stays in the tombs and out of other settings. I believe that it is one of the best games ever made, and it certainly is a classic. However, I believe that its sequels in many aspects overshadow it.
The scenery in Tomb Raider is better than most games, although it is mostly cubed and flat. The game play and plot are wonderful, and the graphics and sounds are acceptable. However, the artificial intelligence enemies are less than intelligent, and the gamer is often left feeling underestimated with the ease of some of the puzzles. Laura's moves are limited, and the weapons supply is less than perfect.
I would recommend this game to any fan of the Tomb Raider series and to the average gamer. However, I do feel that other versions have better qualities. Tomb Raider II offers wonderful AI and is perhaps the best for a gamer seeking combat. Tomb Raider III combines the better aspects of the previous two, and Tomb Raider: The Last Revelation offers the best plot and character mobility. If you are looking to stay in the tombs, or if you are not into puzzles, stick with this game. However, don't miss out on the other great qualities the Tomb Raider series offers.

FUN!

Tomb Raider opens with a bang and closes with you wanting more. Everything looks great, although I think the controls are hard to master and the graphics are sometimes bad in certain areas, this game earns a 4 overall but a 5 for the fun. Lara and her missions are sometimes tedious but the whole atmosphere of this outstanding superwoman/save the world mixes in with the story very well.

Pretty Good Game

This is a very good game, but there are a few problems every now and then. Sometimes, when you're going through a hallway in a tomb, it's hard to control her, and sometimes the graphics are a bit weird, but over all it's a good game. The music can be a bit creepy at times, but you get used to it. I am used to using an analog, but with this game you can't use it, so I was a bit dissapointed about that. Sometimes her moves are a bit complicated, especially when you're jumping over a large gap or something. Sometimes I don't really like killing the animals, but it is just a game. Honestly though, I thought I would never play this game, but when my dad bought it, I tried it out, and really liked it. It's fun once you get the hang of it, but I will admit, sometimes it is pretty tedious. I would recomend renting this game before you buy it though, because even though I think it's a good game, you may not.

I have purchased this game from Toy's R Us and i thought that it was really fun. It's about Lara Croft, who is searching for the lost city of Atlantis. You fight wolves, monkeys, bats and more with ten weapons including uzis. This game is now on the greatest hits list for Playstation. I think that $19.99 for this game is a very good price.

Cool for sure, but some slight flaws...

I like it, but this game is especially hard to figure it out, and it's just about impossible to find secrets. But other than that, the controls are great and easy, the guns rock, and the originality of the producers is AWESOME!

The one and only tomb raider

Tomb is unlike any other video game ever created. I'm sure many people would agree.I'd never thought I'd ever get into a video game, but I did with this one. I partially regret it. I spent too many hours playing tomb raider.Tomb raider had great action and storyline. Some adivice though, don't play tomb raider out like I did. The hypest part was when the dinosaurs were chasing you.Egypt was fun and so was rome. This game is scary and tense at times so beware. But it was fun.I must warn you that the end gets kind of crazy. Tomb raider is a good game overall.
