If I wanted to watch a movie...

...I wouldn't pay $.... Yet, that's exactly what I feel like I bought after playing through Squaresoft's first foray into the land of the PS2. Yes, this game has incredible graphics and wonderful sound, as any movie should. What it lacks, however, is any sort of creativity. I mean, I felt like I was playing Final Fight or Double Dragon again. Square has raised the bar so much with their sparkling RPG's, and it is a shame that this product managed to creep out of the warehouse. Let's hope that Square does better the next time (as I know they will)...

Shows Off the PS2's Graphics, but There's No Game Here

Boot-up of SquareSoft's The Bouncer shows that even a few short months after the Playstation 2 has become available, developers are making games that look great, meaning that even more great looking games are yet to come. Unfortunately, The Bouncer looks amazing, but that's mainly what you do in this "game" - look.

The graphics, both foreground and background are completely amazing. The character designs are first-rate, with details adding to the realism, like the wisps of hair that bounce around on Sion's head, to the spiked horns sprouting from Volt's head. The emotions revealed through facial expression are great, but I really felt that I was watching a movie, rather than a PS2 game.

Intros ranged from a few seconds to several minutes. They were great to watch, but as the game progressed, they became longer while the parts where having a controller in-hand became shorter.

When the controller was in-hand, fighting enemies, the fighting isn't much ahead of Final Fight, or even as far back as the Double Dragon series. While you did have the incentive of beating them to see some more breath-taking scenes, the more you play, the less you want to watch, or even play.

Additionally, the camera angles often were pretty bad, with you running toward the camera, making it impossible to see where the enemies were up ahead. There were also times in the subway scene, where you're running aimlessly to keep ahead of the closing doors and out of the times I did, it never got caught once. There was little challenge here. I think they were included so they could add more time to what was actually interactive on this title.

Had I bought this one, I'd be sorely disappointed, because a DVD action movie has a cheaper price tag. SquareSoft incorporated Dolby Digital 5.1 sound during the cinematic scenes and it sounds wonderful, but again, the Matrix is cheaper and more entertaining.

The game isn't even that challenging. I've beat the game with one character within a couple hours of booting it up and am working through with another, but the storyline really doesn't change enough (there are parts, but it's just not enough) for this one to be worth much more than a couple hours of play. The local used game store had several copies of it, and now I see why. There's little replay value in this one.

The Bouncer really makes a good showoff piece for the PS2, but SquareSoft forgot about putting some game in there. If the cut scenes had ended up having more actual game play in between, it'd be a must-have for the PS2 collection, but as it is, it's a maybe-rent.

another get square soft game.

I hurd about this game from one of my friends. So when i went in to turn in my ps1 i got THE BOUNCER!!

And let me tell you this game is so much funn the replay value is very high. The only problem is as you go it goes from incredably hard to childish easy.

The video modes can and do get very boring. But you can skip though them!? And the vs mode is fun as well

Good thing I rented this one first!

The only good think I have to say about this game is that is does look really good! The graphics are great but that's the only great think about this game! I am totally disappointed with what they did to this game vs. what they could have done!

If you are expecting to see a "double dragon" kind of 2 players with out a split screen type of fighting then think again. Next to that, you get the cheesy characters with the same ole cheesy names and cheesy story line! If you like story based fighting/action games that are very poorly thought out then you will like this one! Other wise, rent it, play it 2 or 3 times and then promptly return it and count yourself lucky you didn't waste your money on this stink bomb of a game!

itýs not as bad as everyone says

This is a really fun game if not a little short. You get attached to your characters and it has OK replay value.
Graphics: 10/10 I've never seen better on a PS2 game. Movie and game graphics alike.
sound:7/10 Everyones voice acted really well except for the main character, but he gets better as you go along.
story:8/10. They turn a simple story into a complex one with this game.
replay:7/10. You can play arcade, 2 player or a weird 4 on 4 thing. (or the story) The replay is better than everyone says.
cut cinemas:10/10 That's what this game is. Movies. And at the end of the beginning movie when he hits the stairs and then the bouncer logo comes on the screen. Damn that's sweet!
overall fun: 8/10 It's a big movie and you can play in the battles. I think it's great but if you don't have the patience to wait through lots of movies, then theres almost no point in buying this game.

Success is how high you bounce when you hit bottom. . .

. . . and the Bouncer definitely hits bottom and not only does it not bounce, it then proceeds to tunnel through the earth and emerge in a strange and boring land. Instead of playing Bouncer, you might want to just hold your controller and watch cartoons -- you'll experience about the same amount of interaction but the stories and animation will be a lot better.

Interactive movie from Squaresoft.

Although a lot of people already said that the Bouncer is easy or short it has many other aspects to it. In the versus mode after you unlock the characters and the other coustumes it is really fun. Although there are 4 versions of Dauragon, and 2 of Mugetsu there is still a lot of options. It is nice to use the villians in the game because they seem to be stronger with more moves than the three bouncers. Although if the bouncers have a large life bar then there is a real challenge. All in all you either love or hate this game, if your inbetween then it's good enough. Great replay, I give it tops on graphics and sound.

WOW COW what a good game

This is the best game in the world...great graphics

Lush graphics but there is something missing, gameplay!

Lets get on with the good things about this movie, great graphics and nice cinemas (hence the two stars and not one star). Now that thats out of the way lets get on with everything wrong about this game. I completed the game in less then a hour, majority of that time was watching very excellent cinemas; but really if I wanted to watch cinemas I would have rented a movie that could go twice as long as this so-called "movie." The big problem I have with this game (or movie), is how much time I actually had of playing time. It was very little! Twenty minutes of gameplay is not worth fifty bucks. I suggest you just rent this one.

Fun but a bit short

When I first played this game I thought it was very fun. The graphics are great the best I've ever seen. The fighting was also pretty good the only downside would be it reacts a bit slow but still very decent. The game takes about an hour to complete with one character, but there are 6 different endings, two for each character. This is kind of short but you have to keep in mind that it is an action game not an RPG. So for what it is it's decent but nothing new.
