Crash Bandicoot: The Wrath of Cortex

I have played most the the Crash games for PS. The new Crash is just the same format as Crash 3 except for one very unfortunate difference. It takes forever to load each level. The levels in which Crash is rolling around in a ball is too aggravating! When I play games, I like to finish every level including bonuses and with this new Crash, I don't think I'll ever get through it because I find the rolling ball ridiculous.

HURRY UP AND WAIT!

WOW - all I can say is "LOADING...LOADING...LOADING". This game was such a dissapointment. I loved all of the previous Crash games, but this one is ruined by unbelievable "loading" times. Stick with a previous version by Naughty Dog - and leave this one alone.

I Miss The Excellence of Naughty Dog

I love the first 3 Crash games...play them all the time. I bought this one as my first for the PS2. Yes, yes, the graphics are cool, but as the other reviews correctly state, the game takes too darn long to load, Crash doesn't seem like his old self, and I don't know about anyone else, but some levels are way too challenging. I like getting thru more than 2 levels....anyone else have problems figuring out the hornet level? I must be dense, but Crash is riding a hornet, and well, it doesn't fire or do anything but fly around and get slammed by the bad guys. Frustrating game. I gave it 3 stars becos I love Crash, and wish Naughty Dog would come back and give us another excellent game.

A triumph for style over substance.

I had been looking forward to this all through the summer of 2001, ever since a magazine showed a work-in-progress feature detaling all the new ideas the next generation Crash game for the PS2 would have. When I played the game, I was wondering if it was the same game the previews had been talking about.
Good points: The graphics look great and the music is inspired. There are some new ideas, like the Marble Madness-style atlasphere sections, most of the more traditional levels will keep Crash fans entertained, and Coco is at last playable in platform levels (albiet a few short ones).
Bad points: This is just Crash by numbers. It has very little of the magic of the PS1 Crashes, most of the levels just feel like crude re-hashes of things we've all seen before. There are some very cheap ways of getting you to lose lives, such as dodgy camera angles which make judging distances a matter of pot luck, rendering simple jumps often nigh on impossible. Not to mention enemies who suddenly appear out of nowhere. The mech-suit levels are slow and clunky compared to the ones in Sonic Adventure 2, the vehicle levels are leaden and the long loading times kill repeated gameplay stone dead. Crash is suitably wacky, but Coco has shrunk about a foot and has turned into a total sap (playing the game with her is like playing it as the kid who always came last in school sports day races), Cortex is okay, but the new characters (Crunch and the evil masks) are irritating Saturday-morning-cartoon figures with none of the character or humorous diaogue of enemies in previous Crash games.

I daresay avid Crash fans or easily-pleased younger players will get something out of this, but the whole thing just smacks of pure commercalism.

Not as good as the last....

Although this game had a pretty high fun rating, in my opinion it is not worth the time it takes for the game and each level to load. First it takes a long time for the opening screen to come up, then you want to load your game and that takes another long wait, and then when you decide the level you are to go to it takes another 5 minutes... all of that and then you beat the level in 2 minutes. Aside from the loading issue, the game is all in all entertaining, although it lacks much challenge.

Good, not bad, but still good

O.k. I'm new to the whole Crash Bandicoot series so I'm not fully up to speed with it so I won't say too much about the game as a whole. Just the gameplay and everything else in between.

I have to admit I liked this game. It's no Mario World but it's very challenging, very clean and crisp (the graphics are very good) and all out, I had fun with this game (except when my world was getting rocked by the battle ships with cannons and all I had was a little Dragonfly with a pea shooter).

The thing that just bothered me about this game was the loading. It just took so long for you to start a level that is was ridiculous. It was slower than Legends of Wrestling. But atleast in return for the long loading, great graphics (very textured and full) and good gameplay gives this game a good thumbs up.

I still think it's a 3 star game rather than a 4 or 5 because of the loading but other than that, EXCELLENT. Enjoy this one and when you're done, give it to your kids because I'm sure they'll have a good time with this title.

The Game Itself Is Not Right

What Happened To Naughty Dog? They made good Crash Bandicoot games. Why did they let another company do it? I hope they put Naughty Dog in charge of Crash games again.

This game is 99.9% Loading. It takes like a Half hour to load the title screen.but once you get started it is sort of fun.I prefer crazy taxi, crash team racing, or an older version of crash over this.

The highs and loads of Crash Bandicoot

First off, yes, loading is an extreme problem in this game. Those that say the atrocious load time should not be part of the review are wrong. Just as graphics (which are fabulous), clipping (minimal) and challenge (ok) should be touched on, so should load time. If you have played the Crash series this game will not be difficult for you, which means that you will load often. If you are of legal drinking age, what an opportunity for a beer break, if not, good luck to you.

Very cool new additions to the game in the form of drivables/flyables. Amazing job with the backgrounds and graphics as we have come to expect. Good ol' Crash. We can't hold the loading woes against him.

Personally, I find all Crash games worth buying. They are one of the few that when boredom strikes can and are picked up for a Crash sequel.

Here's hoping the next time we see our boy that we see him a bit more than the pink load screen.

Buy Crash 3 for PS1 instead?

Although it had all of the classic Crash elements, something was missing in this game. It was nowhere near as fun as Crash 3 for PS1--the best of all the Crash games, IMHO. Since you can get it pretty cheap used, you might want to go for it, but I'd recommend Crash 3 for PS1 instead. You can play it on your PS2!
