A very engrossing GAME

I had heard good things about this game both for the PC and the PS2. The controls are very intuitive, except for controlling the monorail. The gameplay is very smooth and clean.
Now the good stuff:
This game is very thorough and quite complex in game design. You get a pretty thorough training "board" when you first put the game in.
Even on the easiest setting you still need to use your mind just as much as your weapons. Just about everything around you can be used in one way or another.
The enemies which range from your garden variety Alien to some pretty weird monsters, to, and I might be giving the game away, but you also have to defend yourself against the military, which by the way are trying to shut you up.
This is a very time consuming game, so be prepared to spend some time with this game.

Ummm I have not played this yet but...

The guy at the top, Clifford, copied the review out of EGM and I thought you need to know this!

Simple, but good nonetheless.

Any review by a PC player who has never played Half Life on the PS2 should be ignored and disregarded. I have this game for the PS2 and have never played it on the PC, so I can take it at its own terms on the PS2.
First of all, the graphics are not the most up to date on the PS2, but they are still crisp, fast moving, detailed, and in no way distract from the overall experience. The story is certainly well integrated into the game, and the plot and blasting progresses at a constant rate. The only minor flaw, I suppose, is the voice sound. The music is fine, and the voices are easy enough to understand, but they are not nearly as clear as the voices in Agent Under Fire or Red Faction.
Still, overall, this game is well worth the time it takes to finish, and for the gamer who, like myself, has never bothered to play the PC version, this is worth the price of a ticket to Black Mesa.

good fps but ive played better

this game has a pretty cool story line. i have to say the single player mode kept me busy for hours. it is a very long game!!!!!! cool weapons, cool scenery, and cool aliens!!!!! i must say that the multi player and co-op modes ar extremly horrible!! the co-op
mode is only fun to play by yourself. if you are looking for a good multi player game i woul suggest Agent Under Fire.

This is the best game ever and the definite FPS

This is by far the best game ever made, to clear up a bit of confusion, however, it is the same game as the original PC version which came out in 1998. The only difference between the two is that the PS2 version has HD or High definition graphics, an upgrade from the original. This upgrade must be bought seperately for the PC with the add-on Half-Life Blue Shift. Half-life proves that a game can not only have good gameplay and graphics, but can have a great storyline and most of all be fun to play. Half-Life recieved more than 50 "Game of the Year" awards and PC Gamer magazine gave it "...The best PC game of all time..." If that hasnt convinved you, download the demo, you wont be dissapointed.
The single player game is by far the most interesting aspect, however some people find that multiplayer is the only way to play, I think that the real fun however lies, in escaping and reaching the exciting end to this game. All in all it is my favorite game of all time, i think it is the best. Maybe in the future they will release Half-Life Opposing Force, and Blue shift for the PS2 but for now this will do. Enjoy.

half-life.

everybody that plays fps, knows that half-life has influenced the genre in many respects. like other great fps shooters before it, ie doom, duke nukem, wolfenstein 3d, it has impacted the tactical fps sub-genre, even more so with half-life: counter-strike. you are gordon freeman, you show up to work as normal, to do a relatively normal daily research opeartion in the test chamber...when all goes to hell, to speak. the story line quickly becomes trust-no-one, x-files kinda'ish, when the government has orders to destroy everybody, and everything in the black mesa research facility. this game is one of the older fps shooters out there, but still holds it's own, and is a classic. with respect to the ms xbox halo, half-life does seem to have a more 'realistic' flavor to it. due highly to the weapons at your disposal, and the setting. a classic that belongs in every ps2 owners collection.

That REALLY hurt!!! Who Disses Half-Life? Honestly...

Let ME SET SOMETHING STRAIGHT: Half-Life does NOT suck. That is like saying you hate oxygen. People need to learn that just because this is on the Playstation 2, don't hate it. That reminds me of geeky Nintendo fans that hate everything but Nintendo products. It's agrivating. I have both the PC and PS2 Versions, and I'd have to say that the PS2 version is the dominent one. First off, the graphics. I won't go into that because everyone has already mentioned it 500 times, but I will say this; they are FRIGGIN AWESOME! second off, even though there are less cheat codes on the Ps2 than PC, I think Half-Life on PS2 has much, much cooler ones; for example, does anyone like MAX PAYNE's slow-mo feature? Try that on HALF-LIFE!!! you can find the code at various cheat sites. Also, have you ever wanted what it would be like to be one of those aliens? Now you can be! I know someone with every minute of their lives devoted to computers could probably duplicate all the codes onto a PC Half-Life MOD,but why waste the time when it's so easy to just buy it with this little package? Only 20 bucks more than the PC version (and I know anyone reading this has that much money to spare)which is 30 bucks, this is a fairly cheap and wonderful package to buy. Did I mention the Co-op mode? Hey... all you who hate it... LIGHTEN UP! I find that the ability to work together with a friend through a full-version game (ONLY INCLUDED ON THE PS2 VERSION) is pretty dang sweet. And how good does a deathmatch using the half-life engine (also on Ps2 version and not PC) have to be? "Oh,whaaah, it's only two players..." Go stick a passifier in your mouth and SHUT UP! Two players is fine. All new levels, plenty of graphical touch-ups, fully customizable controls, USB compatibility (for that dawg who can't leave the keyboard vibe)and everything but the kitchen sink make this a wonderful little buy to get your mojo workin! (And don't worry about that fat nerd who plays with his 'magic' card collection who tells you it sucks; go buy it. Now.

The great game of Half Life

The game half life is about a person who has a job in a lab and somehow makes a tunnel that lets aliens come to earth. When your playing, you jump. You laugh. And in certain parts your even stunned. The game is in my top ten list for best shooting games. It's really fun. I mean who doesn't like killing an alein with a crowbar? Or blowing one up? If I was you this would be one game to buy. Along with the second one too. It's got killing, sneaking, strategy, and you can even ambush people. If you like sci-fi games and like to kill this is certainly for you.

Not worth the money

I have been playing Half-Life on my computer since version 1.0 came out and let me tell you this, this is just another case of an absoluetly excelent PC game gone bad on a console. With out a doubt, it's not worth the money to buy a PS2 game. I suguest that if you are interested in getting Half-Life and its subsequent mods you buy the PC version and go to planethalflife dot com and check out the mods. It's much much better on PC.

Let me say something about the bad reviews

everyone has an own opinion, but i feel like i should counter some things, so use this as a guidline of buying this game.

+The most creative and best storyline i have ever seen. The leve designs are amazing, and the story is ingenius, you will never find a game as great as this one in year. The level designs for examples, have many obstacles like "hmmm, what do i do now, how would i pass this without getting killed.." and many booby-traps i must add. (the booby traps are very surprising and frightening, ex. your walking in a room and suddenly the lights turn off, and you passout, and finding yourself after dumped in a garbage dump which is about to crush you) note: read the other reviews to see a brief summary of the plot.

+A exceptionally hard game! I played on the PC version (i find using the mouse easier) and I put on Easy Mode, and i thought, w/e it will be a piece of cake. well, as you go farthur, there will be more enemies, alien, or human. If your looking for a challenge, here it is! (although maybe they made it easier on the PS2 version)

Things that you must consider:

+THIS GAME IS about 6 years old! (1998) So don't expect shiny new graphics like Halo or Max Payne. In my opinion, a game is not great/fun by the looks of the cover, graphics, and how many weapons you have, a game is fun because of a great story and gameplay! (like the old mario games, its fun, but old.) Don't expect fancy animations, or anything, although i must add that the sound (not soundtrack) in this game is good. Ive heard that this game influenced many of the *new shiny games with intense graphics* out there today.

If you want to try it out, you can rent it first, but you definetely won't beat it before the due date :)
