My Opinion

This game is great. If you like Grand Theft Auto, you will LOVE this game. I can hardly pull myself away. It doesn't cost as much as other PS2 games and it's really fun.

Really a 4 and a 1/2 star game...

This game is pretty cool, the controls are odd at first but once you get used to it (took me about 5 minutes) the game runs really smooth. In the game you basically run through level after level blasting the bad guys to bits. Between the blasting a somewhat weak but interesting story is unfolded. I would give this game a 4 and a half star rating only because there are a few levels that are very annoying and hard to beat, if you've beaten it you know what I mean, if you haven't you will. But other than just two pain in the rear levels the game is a five star all the way. And now that it's on the greatest hits list you have no reason NOT to own it.

this game is alright. one of those games that only appeals to people who are into a certain type of game. and this type of game would be action. duh. there are alot of negetive aspects to this game. the worst would probably be the writing. very horrible. this game has been in the works for MANY years...the least they could do is make it sound a little less low budget-ish. its just cheesy and the voice acting is very bad. alot of people say the actors are OK and its just the writing thats bad...but no, these guys suck. the story is very generic but is still pretty decent. the controls could have used a little tweaking, too. just wait until you get to the parts of the game where you have to walk over these little 6 inch wide bridges. have fun falling off and then having to wait for it to load again. also the graphic novel idea is lame. its nice though because you can hit X and skip these but you cant skip any cinematics, which sucks..because they are not anything special.
now on to the positive parts of the game...the bullet time thing is pretty cool. with out the bullet time thing the game would be alot lot harder and less fun. i know they stole it from the matrix but thats OK. even the Enter the Matrix game couldnt do the bullet time better than max payne...which is stupid because they thought it up in the first place. the game is short but you'll probably find your self playing it again, if you liked it.
bottom line: a very solid action game and now its a 'greatest hits' title so you should pick it up

Too Repetitive

I just recently got a PS2, and hoping to find some good greatest hits games, I came across Max Payne. I bought it instantly and popped it in. I noticed right away that the loading times were just TOO long. Not to mention that annoying graphic novel that explained the story line. This game has some strengths, like a variety of guns and lots of action, but the fun of killing baddies just wears off. The voice acting is horrible, and the graphics are sub-par. Only buy if you're a major fan of shooters.

Must Play

Max Payne is a very enjoyable game. Although the story is aimed toward a more mature adience, hence the mature rating from ESRB. It is an excellent game for people who enjoy action shooters. The graphics aren't the best I have seen the PS2 produce although that doesn't affect the over all enjoyabilityof Max Payne.
The plot of the game is a cop (Max Payne) who's family was murdered. So he goes to find out who killed them and to prove he didn't kill his friend Alex.
The game is a great I would recomend it to any hardcore gamer or just an average person who enjoys a fun easy to get into game.

The Game from Heaven

This is one of the best games I have ever played. I would say the best but I am a big Silent Hill fan and that will always be # 1. This game is so good I am taking time to write this review. The graphics are excellent. The gameplay is Excellent. The story is Excellent. Sound is Excellent. This is one game you will not get bored with. WARNING: People Who Play This Game May Not Want To Stop this game is that good. This game was worth the money that I payed.

Best shooter ever, but for Ps2?

I have the Ps2 and love it, graphics are great and games are fun. Max Payne, however, is the greates shooter ever and is amazing in every way. The graphics require more than the Ps2 so they will have to downsize the graphics. I wouldn't buy it for the Xbox either. The graphics are a little bit better but not much. Ps2 and Xbox wouldn't be worth the money. Buy it for PC, then you can fully enjoy it!

Great Visuals, Distracting and Irritating Play Control

This game is gorgeous, and the perspective is unique and fantastic. Unfortunately, some controls do not translate as well from computer mouse (or gamepad) to PS2 as they could.

I had such high hopes for this game, but I am just not able to use both analog joysticks, the L1/2 and R1/2 buttons, and the button pad at the same time. Call me uncoordinated (despite the fact that I have been playing video games since before there were home video game systems!), but I don't want to give myself carpal tunnel syndrome from playing a game!

I would also like to state that "bullet-time" was a neat style of visual effect in the Matrix. It is not something I want to see in shooting games in the future, as it just adds a level of implausibility to an otherwise realistic game.

A decent rental...

I rented this game but was not able to beat it in the short time span I had! I was able to hit in some codes and try out all the weapons, so here goes....Over all the game is good, with great action movie type visuals, great gun/explosive effects and decnt cinematic scenes. The controls are hard to get used to though, and will take about an hour or more of practice to even shoot straight. And where the game turns ugly....The storyline and voice acting in this game is truly horrible! These 2 aspects really hurt the game! If you get this game, I would skip past the stupid story sequences and just play. Now that the game [costs less], I guess it's worth buying, but I would still recommend renting it and beating the game in that amount of time, so you don't have to buy it!

Pretty good game

Good action, good story line. If you like first person shooters this is pretty good. Not quite Red Faction but getting there.
