Not the best replay value, but cool game.

My twelve year old son bought this game. After renting it, he just HAD to have it. Now for him to use his allowance to buy this game told me how much he enjoyed it.

Many missions seem to be near impossible to complete without the cheat codes. And the ending is set to either end there, yet has the option of being continued. I guess the makers want to see how the public reacts.

Not one to be replayed and replayed, but it will keep you busy for about a month.

More trouble than it's worth...

I thought this would be one of the coolest games out for the PS2 right now. And in some respects, that's true. However, as a seasoned veteran of game systems, this is probably the hardest game to control I have EVER played. It's a rare thing for me to get so angry at video game. DOn't let the fluidity of Konoko's motion to confuse the issue... You can't control her. It's difficult to get used to using both analog sticks top control movement, aim weapons, and look around. That coupled with too many enemies that attack in groups will frustrate you. It's really awful to be having your tail kicked and not be able to even find who's got their foot in you rear. I found Oni to be a complete frustrating waste of time and money.

The Tomb Raider of the Future!

If your the type of gamer who liked the Tomb Raider series, then you might like this game. Although the controls aren't all that good, the gameplay kind of makes up for it. The storyline kinda makes te main character look more like the bad guy instead of the good guy. This game does have some good action, but corny lines. So, if you like action/shooting games, this game might delight you for a while!

Oni For Sony

This one of the sweetest games I've ever seen for Playstation One or Two. The game utilizes one of the most high-tech combanation of arrow, analog, symboles, rights, and lefts for any game on any system. Not only that, but the combanation of wepons and hand to hand fighting make it somewhat of a stratigy game. The graphics are intense, the wepons fanaminal, and the plot (from what i have so far seen) is well thougt out. It could easily rate "PS2 Game of the Year."

Only fun if you cheat

OK. This game is very difficult if you try to use the PS2 controller. I bought this game new, and after hating it for the first 6 hours, tried to sell back to a gamestop. They offered me 50 cents! So, I kept it. On a shelf collecting dust. This was back in 2005.

Fast Forward to Oct 2006. While searching online for a joystick for my PS2, I found the MaxShooter keyboard adapter for the PS2. You plug a keyboard and mouse into this little box, and it [the box] emulates the PS2 controller. So, I bought this little device ($20). You have to program it, but that takes all of about 2 minutes. Anyways, I'm getting a little off subject. The point is I bought a MaxShooter mouse and keyboard adapter for the PS2, and programmed it to play ONI.

OH WOW! It this game ever fun now! HOLY COW, The graphics are awsome, Konoko's moves are mind blowing. The fluidity of her moves are so amazing. This has to the best game ever! The story is unparalled to anything I've ever watched. There are entire cities that you can walk around in!!!

I MEAN, THIS GAME ROCKS...so long as you don't use the PS2 controller.

So, if you have this game and hate it, invest the $20 in the maxShooter mouse and keyboard adapter for your PS2, and I guarantee that this game will knock your socks off.

PROS: Huge levels, lots of puzzels (you have to lure your enemies otherwise they overwhelm you), great use of weapons. Konoko's fighting style is totally awsome. You have an advantage in that you can see around corners which makes sneaking up on enemies so much easier. Riveting story. With friggin' awsome cutscenes. AND, some people have been giving this game smack about being so realistic...well, now the realism is the best thing about it. I especially like how you can side step enemies, swirl around behind them, and beat the living snot out of them. OH, AND SPOILER. YOU LEARN A TORNADO KICK THAT IS SO COOL

CONS: There is one level where you are at an airport, the poor PS2 can barely handle that level. Everything moves more or less in slow-mo because the PS2 is having to render the airplanes. its just too much for the PS2 to handle. Sometimes the screen gets really dark. I mean, I have to turn off all my lights just to see what's on the screen. But that only happened twice

BIGGEST CON: the game is udderly impossible with a regular PS2 controller. You have to buy this MaxShooter adapter

So, with that being said. I hope more people try this game (with this Max Shooter). If you have trouble programming the device, I can email you the instructions on what I did. You can try it out and if you like it fine, else, also fine. So, here's my email. kearney_taaffe@hotmail.com

okay...I played this game and decided to take it back after the second day and get another game. Thank goodness I had bought it used. I don't think it was hard to learn how to control her in the training missions...it just made it wierd to try to aim and move and shoot with the analog sticks. I just didn't like the controls...plus the fact of this beeing my first PS2 game it didn't meet with graphical expections or desires. I went and bought sky odyssey and found it to be a much better game. You want a fighting game try Onimusha Warlords or Dynasty Warriors both are great.

Something to get used to.

I bought this and SSX at the same time and at first iI wound up playing SSX more. The enviroments are very dark, and so far rather uninteresting. Sometimes it is really hard to see where you're going. But as I've played it more and gotten used to the controls, I've begun to really enjoy it. The moves are different and really effective, and basically the whole game play is pretty fun. I recomend it to anyone who can commit to a game for a while and gets more fun out of playing it then looking around at the scenery.

A Good Game, But Not Perfect

I found this game to be pleasing to the eye. It is a beautiful game and the levels are gorgeous. But the gameplay is rather frustrating. I found one of the most annoying things was that it was almost impossible to hit a moving targert. It is quite lopsided when fighting a soldier who has a weapon because they can shoot you from a distance with an extremely high amount of accuracy while Konoko is moving. Also, getting into fights with more than one soldier is also to difficult. Alot of Konoko's moves are to hard to perform when she is confronted with an attack by more than one individual. Weapon control could have been vastly improved in the game. If you don't mind getting very frustrated and enjoy a good game, then I would recommend this one. But be warned, you will get extremely frustated fast.

Not bad but not an instant classic

controls are alittle hard to deal with and it does get kinda hard to remeber how to do whata when you need to in a fight. If you don't have a gun or get into a fight with more than one fighter you better have soem more life ready to use. Using the gun is kinda hard as well nemys can take aim with perfect or close to perfect aiming while it's hard for you to aim at a person standing still. When shooting a gun your arm also jerks up causeing you to have to reaim it right after you fire a shot.

On the good side or the gamr there is something that will make you come back to it and play the same stage thay you put down the control in discust earlier. The graphics could use some work but is still not that bad. The idea is a good idea of the game and I do like the fighting tactics but one of the thigns that this game needs is a quick silent kill like they have in metalgear solid. But asa last note it does have one of those just can't stop playing feels to it.

Fun game, but you can wait for Oni 2!

I'm editing my review (...).

The review as originally written is still below. However, I want to state for the record that I am a huge Bungie fan, and Halo is awesome. I am just dissapointed in Oni, plain and simple. Oni could have been a masterpiece, and it may be one yet. However, it isn't one now. It is fun, but there are better, richer, more intuitive games out there like Halo. Oni has an extremely promising future, and I probably will buy Oni 2, because Bungie is fantastic, and Oni is unique. We'll see...

Original Review:

This game could have been great. The character design, unique use of hand-to-hand and first person shooter combat, and the old Marathon style gameplay has so much potential. Yet, it falls a bit short. The missions are too simple. The levels seem a bit devoid of character (there's not enough detail). Sometimes it takes a bit too long to get through a level, because of the order you kill people in, etc. This would not be a problem if it was fun going back through a level, but the levels just aren't that pretty or exciting. We can only hope Halo is better, but it will probably only be on the Xbox and PC. Hmmmm. Oh well.

Fun for awhile. ....
