Use the D-pad!

If you're planning on buying this game, be warned: You will HATE it for the first hour or so. The controls are unlike any other game I've ever played. Once you get used to them, though, the advantages are clear. mainly, you can do several things simultaneously. For instance: you can slide across the ground into an enemy, knocking him down, while using a hypo spray (i.e. med pack) and picking a gun up off the ground all in one motion! If you ask me, that's worth the time it takes to get used to the weird controls.

One word of advice: D-Pad. You use the D-Pad or the left analog stick to control Konoko's movement forward and back and strafe left and right. Use the D-Pad it's a lot easier.

The basic gameplay is really strong. The story, up through the first 1/3 of the game is pretty typical anime kind of stuff. The voice acting is decent.

Where this game really loses points is in the details. The levels are huge and really cool structurally, but the textures are bland and and don't change much. The ground is often too dark, which sometimes makes it difficult to judge distances. There are places where there should be lots of civilians, but only a few show up. The cut scenes are also really disappointing.

On the whole, I would rate Oni as more of a 4- rather than a 4. It's a great foundation and fun to play, but as a total package, it could be a lot better.

BUY IT NOW!!!!!!!!!!!

Why 3 stars: No multiplayer !!

Good controls, gameplay and graphics. Actually, the concept and execution for the story-driven game are great, but what about after you beat it. A mulitplayer portion was supposed to be included, but the game was rushed to market to coincide w/ PS2 release. Also annoying is the amount of time it takes to load a saved mission and/or return to the game menus. Own it and love it, but I play RF2 and UR Tournament more than Oni. So sad.

luvved it on PC and Playstation even better

What a great game this is. The only reason I don't give it a five is the lack of multiplayer mode, so that you could use all the aforementioned 'complex' moves you learned on somebody else. But it has a great story line, great artwork, great combat feel, and good looking heroine.... what more could you want, especially for the price these daze.... BUT I WOULD PAY 40 BUCKS FOR A MULTIPLAYER VERSION..... ( hint to Rockstar )

oni-good game but too many glitches

this game was the first ps2 game i ever owned. overall it is a good game with a complex story and fun levels. My only critisim is that there are too many glitches. for example- you are playing the game and all of the sudden glitch it stops. This is a nusence because there is nothing you can do about it. If i were you i would deffinetly rent this game before i bought it .

A good game, but impossible to beat

Oni for the PC is a great game. But for the PS2, some of the thrill is gone. The gameplay is the same, but the controls are lousy. Generally, when you turn left or right you will accidentally nudge the joystick so that you look up or down at an angle that makes it hard for you to shoot. Level 3 is almost impossible to beat because of the [weak] controls. Another problem is the lack of ammo. You get very little to start, and the villians you kill have a very small chance of giving you anything. If you buy this, I'd spend the extra money and get it for PC. The game is exactly the same, but the controls are ever so much better...

This is a fun game and kicks... Oni has a lot of fighting moves and the game has great 3D graphics. Though, I personally find one major drawback in this game are the camera angles - the camera always stays at the same distance behind Oni causing the walls of a room to get in the way and block the view of what is happening. As a result many times when I'm fighting an opponent and I can't see what I'm doing. This is a flaw that needn't be.

Nice Graphics, Interesting Storyline, Frustrating Gameplay

Graphics. I first played this game in a PC demo, and it looked like a great title to me. Actually this game was the first I bought when I managed to get the PS2. I was excited wondering what the graphics would be in this new number-crunching-console and I wasn't disapointed at first.

Story. You are soposed to be a futuristic female cop. You don't know anything about yourself, but other character's dialogue let you know that you are not human (at least not completely). Your mission is to kick some butts and stop some kind of evil company who is develping some forbiden technologies. Your secondary mission (I guess) is to find out who you really are. I have gone through only 3 chapters (i'll explain next) so I just have seen the beginning of the story, which is, quite interesting.

Gameplay. The problem began when I tried to advance in the game. The first two chapters i did it pretty good, but then I was siply stuck in the third chapter. The reason: the controls are just too darn dificult. You have to use ALL buttons and sometime an odd combination just to avoid your enemies's bullets or trying to kick some bad guy. I guess I'll start cheating.

Conclusion. To those who used to like Contra-like games, this is just for you (with awesome graphics), but if not i defenitely recommend to rent it first.
