Oni - much better than people say

4 Rating: 4, Useful: 1 / 2

I must say that the controls are not as difficult as people seem to think. I personally use the D-pad for movement and the right stick to change angle, and I find I can run around levels kicking serious butt with no problem. In fact, I get an adrenaline rush seeing some of the great (dare I say creative?) combo moves I can perform with so _few_ controls. It takes a little getting used to, but most pleasures in life are better with some challenge.

Yes, the game could be improved, but that's what sequels are for...

Oni is a Good Fun Game for the Action Gamer

It takes a 3rd person perspective similar to Tomb Raider with the camera always following behind you and over your head. The controls start off as complicated for the average PS2 player, but a person used to computer games shouldn't find it too strange with the left analog mapping to the arrow keys and right analog mapping to the mouse for the average computer 1st person shooter.

The combat system is simple with your standard punching and kicking techniques. You'll gain new moves as the game progresses but beyond the basic combos they tend to be difficult to pull off in real combat situations and not worth the effort. The game does an excellent job representing the realism of guns. Fighting two or more armed opponents when you are not armed will inevitably result in death. The computer AI is even smart enough to know that if there's a gun on the ground it's to its advantage to go and pick it up rather than continue fighting hand to hand. Unfortunately, the computer AI has no problem doing suicide attacks with rocket launchers inside of rooms taking away from games realism and making certain fights frustrating.

The levels, while being well designed and sometimes vast, have no eye candy in them. Backgrounds are plain and unexciting. The people move fluidly enough when fighting but no special attention was given to rendering when they are talking with each other during story scenes.

The game also shows some pretty amateur problems. You'll see enemy's arms sticking through walls and you sometimes are even able to hurt the enemies through the wall. Turning properly when close to a wall will often let you see on the other side of it.

The story line is entertaining in the anime cyberpunk motif with some very well done voice acting. I was drawn into it at certain points being angry at characters and wanting to seek revenge. There's even a split point in the story line that will affect the final ending of the game.

Unfortunately, Rockstar took out the multiplayer combat mode of the game in order to get it out on time. This reduces the replay value immensely and there's little incentive to play again after you've beaten both endings to the game.

Overall, it's a fun game to play through and enjoy. It's worth the money if you enjoy the 3rd person beat-up style game. It won't win any awards for pushing the hardware that it's on.

This game is great in its game play. The use of the controls is very interesting. It takes a bit to get used to, but once understood, the movement of the character is fluid and natural. The environments are somewhat drab and lack personality from one another, but having the 360 degree perspective capability is awesome!

Good thing I rented it!

You like tomb raider-ish/mgs knock offs? You'll love this game. That's about all there is to say. You run around shooting, punching, or kicking guys around. I have to say the graphics are really nice but the story line is rather boring and game play very repetitive! That's why I'm glad I only rented oni cause it's not one I'd want to own. Pre order Winback or wait for metal gear! One last thing the rating is not mature like amazon.com says it's teen you can even see the rating in the picture they have.

Addictive Fun

All aspects of this gamee are purely mediocre, but for some reason, it is impossible to stop playing once you get going. The game controls (as well as some of the levels) can be downright frustrating at times, but it still doesn't hinder your desire to play this part of the game "just one more time". Overall a pretty descent game to own.

This game isn't great. But it is good.

The graphics could be better. But they are not that bad. It has a certain feel to the game that draws you into the story and the events. The controls are a little odd, but with a little practice you can get the hang of them. Although in high stress situations I have the odd moment of poor control. Some of the missions are a little hard and you do have to use all your characters moves and skills to survive. I have been waiting for this game for a while and I have not been disappointed. It's fast, fun and for the most part logical with it's level flow.

I think it deserves a solid 4 stars. It is alot of fun and one that I am happy to have.

Enjoyable!

I'm right in the middle of ONI, and I'm really enjoying it. Yes, the controls do take some getting used to, but once you get the hang of it, it's great. My only beef with the game is that sometimes the walls aren't solid and the combatants can actually fight through a wall or a closed door. The main character is fun to control and great fun to watch. The storyline is enough to keep me interested. Maybe it's not "A Tale of Two Cities" but it has enough in it so that I want to see what happens next. There are some challenging parts in the game, but for 50 bucks, it's a challenge I'm looking for! If the games were too easy, I'd have a new game every few days and end up broke. All things considered, I'd recommend Oni to anyone. (Except the people who wrote negative reviews. I don't think they'd appreciate it.)

Anime Action in 3D

Let's start by saying that I didn't fall into the crowd that thought the previous PS2 games by rockstar were incredible. I thought they graphic tricks were 'neat' but it just seemed like it could have been better. And while Oni definetly could have been better, it is by far the best Tomb Raider clone I've seen. Did I say clone? I should't have. This game goes so much farther than any stale Tomb Raider sequel. It's graphics, while excellent are a bit plain in places. But the 3D models of the characters involved are well above the average set in previous PS2 offerings. The does a great job of putting you in the story with in-engine cutscenes as well as anime-style scenes. Being a fan of Japanese anime, I noticed that Konoko, your main character is not of the heaving cleavage type found in most anime games. So you don't have to suspend your beliefe that she might be able to jump around and do the aerial acrobatics she pulls off without having to hurt herself in the process. I guess at the very least, everyone should rent this game. If you're a fan of anime-style 3D and aren't frustrated by the dual stick control, buy it now.

This is a fun game!!

I have spent a whole lot of quality time with ONI over the weekend, and I have come to the conclusion.....I love this game!!

ONI's gameplay reminds me of a cross between Fighting Force and Metal Gear Solid (Two games which I love). The graphics are great, and the levels are huge. Oni has quite a few moves which are fun to use while fighting. The weapon selection is very cool too, (especially with the force feedback on.) The challenges at the end the first two levels were nicely done. (I can't wait to see what else is in store for me on the later levels.)

The only drawbacks to ONI is the sound, which seems to get disjointed at times when the characters are talking. This can be somewhat annoying at times, but fortunately, it doesn't happen enough for it create too much of a problem.

Overall, Oni is challenging enough to keep you playing, and will keep you wanting to get to the next level. With 17 huge levels, Oni will keep you busy for quite a while. This game wins, with great graphics and fun gameplay.

Finally, another game worth owning on the PS2 has been released!!!

my first play station 2 game.

This is my first play station 2 game, I have been waiting to get this game ever since I herd about it, that has been a while now. Since I have been waiting for this game I held great expectations for this; I was disipointed. The first thing I noticed about this game was how complicated the controlls were, and the people who made the game took the time for u to get used to the controll, that was good but the falts start coming out when you start playing threw the levels, what I mean is when the enemies fall they sometimes seep threw the walls, doors, or anything they fall onto, it is really quite appaling since the power of the playstation 2 can do so much to fix that. the other thing I did not like is the characters in the cut scenes look like they have no life to them. But the game has so much to offer, like the really challinging enemy AI, the enemies are actually not stupid.
