An OK Tycoon Game

3 Rating: 3, Useful: 11 / 12

My brother got this game a year or so ago and I like to play it. In the game you have the option to play a freeform game, which is a game you don't have any objectives or anything, and just build a zoo from scratch, and having the option of spending up to $500,000 (of course you can cheat and use the unlimited money cheat...=P press 'shift' and '4'). This is one of the advantages of this game. You can also do the tutorial and scenario games, which as in many of the other tycoon games, you need to complete certain objectives in a certain amount of time. (For example one of these objectives might be "In 18 months, achieve an average exhibit suitability rating of 85, an average guest happiness of 80, and process at least 1 baby White Bengal Tigers, Okapis, and Snow Leopards.")

Playing the freeform games are fun, because you can set your own options. Like in the other tycoon games, you can do research, edit terrain, build paths, buy restaurants and stands/stalls, build attractions, adopt animals, and more. The paths tool is also more efficient; you can drag your mouse and construct a 30-foot path instead of the standard 5-feet-at-a-time that you have to do on Roller Coaster Tycoon. You also have a very wide of animals to choose from; such as savannah, rainforest, coniferous, deciduous, grassland, ocean, fresh-watered, and highland animals. There are even unicorns.

One of the biggest disadvantages of this game is that you have really stupid guests (as another viewer mentioned), and that the game itself is hardly challenging (at least until you work on the 'advanced' and 'very advanced' scenarios). The guests in this game are really mindless and hard to work with, especially at the advanced and very advanced scenarios. It's a pain in the royal behind really, because they will walk of paths and wander so deep in your huge park that you can't find them, and they will starve and be unhappy and bring your guest happiness rating down, and you need ratings of at least 93/100 to win.

The graphics in this game are really pretty. There's the nice Thompson's Gazettes, that spring around happily in the exhibits, and the bears that roar and run around, and when you're constructing the exhibits the terrain blends together quite nicely.

But I would recommend this for an animal lover. You learn quite a bit about animals' habitats. But me? Pick up any of the Roller Coaster Tycoon packs instead. You might find them to be a bit more fun.

I have two daughters who immenseley enjoy playing this game ... it's fun as well as educational ... they've learned a good deal about fauna as well as flora ... they are first and third graders and had no difficulty whatsoever very quickly learning to navigate their way through it ... i highly recommend it ... it's non-violent ... except when my first grader feeds spectators to the sharks when they don't like her dolphin show ... you always gotta watch out for the quiet ones (smile)

outstanding game! I also own Jurassic Park: Operation Genesis, but when you're looking for an all-around fun game this does the job nicely.

(I like to see the thompsons gazelles frolic...they're cute!)

Great game, lots of fun, and highly addictive! Plus (if you look closely) the Orca Whales fart. Amusing!

The Original Is Still the Best

I own both the original Zoo Tycoon Complete Collection (including the Dinosaur Digs and Marine Mania expansions and and endangered species themepack) and Zoo Tycoon 2. I much prefer the original. It has a few unfortunate drawbacks, the most annoying one being the lack of curving fencing. It would be nice to be able to build some bridges over graded terrains and have a few more concession options, too, but other than that, the Zoo Tycoon Complete Collection allows one to build a greater variety of zoos and keep them going for extended periods of time (both virtual and real). And the original Zoo Tycoon series doesn't have the limited animal choices, cartoonish style, and annoying "womping" sound when you place objects that Zoo Tycoon 2 does. All in all, the original Zoo Tycoon is still the best, especially the Complete Collection.

Rollercoaster Tycoon Goes to the Zoo

Every company loves to make a tycoon game, especially after the financial success of Rollercoaster Tycoon, and to Zoo Tycoon's credit, it is probably the best tycoon series since the rollercoaster titles and can be a fun game to spend time with. Unfortunately, most mainstream games such as this one have limited content in the original game and require you to purchase subsequent expansions to fully enjoy the game. Thus, the first Zoo Tycoon probably didn't have enough animals, scenery and other goodies to make it a worthwhile purchase. However, now that the original game and both expansions can be had for the same price as the first game, it's a good buy. Casual gamers will probably have a lot of fun with this title, especially consumers that want a family game. Hardcore gamers that have seen it all will probably be entertained for a day or two and then look elsewhere. Anyone that enjoys games that allow them to create and build will get a kick out of Zoo Tycoon. I especially enjoyed the free form option that allows a gamer to build a zoo from scratch instead of sticking with scenarios that have preset goals. It's a decent game, nothing spectacular, but creative enough to keep you playing for a few days.

Fun, fun, fun!!!

This is one of the best sim games I've come across in a while. It's kept me busy for hours and hours.. and hours.. and hours.. lol. The animals are cool and pretty realistic.. I particarly enjoy watching the polar bears and chimps.. they are a riot! Lots of accessories to download for free from fansites as well, which is a defininite plus. This one gets a huge thumbs up!! Definately the best Tycoon game of them all...(as i own most of them already) I think the best feature is the large selection of animals to use, and how to habitat them... i admit i do dream of the game when it is off, the only minor draw is only 2 levels of zoom...The animal sounds must be realistic, my cocker spaniels barks back at the wall thinking they are really in my house!!!
it is HILARIOUS!

This game rocks. It's endless hours of entertainment. The only problem right now is, I lost my CD and now I can't play it! Although there are a limited number of scenarios on the game, people have become so obsessed with it that they have created their own scenarios - just as good as the ones the games come with. You can easily download them from http://zoo.ogresnet.com/ which also features great message boards if you need help with anything. (I hope I'm allowed to plug that here - I have nothing to do with the creation of that website, I'm just a big fan of it!). I would recommend this game to anyone. It's absolutely fantastic!

Cannot recommend enough!

This game is awesome! My son, who started playing this game at 6, has been in love with this game for over a year. Every child, ages 6 - 11, who comes over to our home ends up addicted to this game. I think we are personally responsible for a spike in sales of this product in our area!

The game teaches children so much on so many levels without boring them with the presentation. They learn about the animals themselves by setting up their environments. If they don't do it right the animals will complain, get sick or die. They learn to manage employees. Every once in a while you'll get an employee who doesn't do his work and you have to fire him! They learn about management of a park. For example, if you forget to add enough trash cans, the guest will throw trash on the ground. And they learn about budgets because if they don't manage their cash flow they will run out of money.

Totally a thumbs up!

BEST GAME EVA!

At first when I got this game I found it kind of complicated to get started, like I didn't know you could check the zoo keeper for tips. But now, I've had the game for almost a year, which I'm now entering the 6th grade. I have a zoo on the kids map, one of the options of where to build your zoo, and It's great! All of the animals are unlocked on the kids map. My zoo is three years old in game time, and I have every animal the game has to offer in an exhibit in my zoo. On the kids map, you also can't run out of money! This game is a must for all you kids out there I'd say maybe ten or older.
