This has got to be the most fun I've had in a while.

This game will definately appeal to the casual player. I've been playing since about a month before beta and can say without a doubt that this is one of the best MMORPG's out there.
The developers are very in tune with their player base and really go out of their way to ensure an enjoyable experience. Last night started their halloween event which was loads of fun. You went trick-or-treating. You'd try to open a door and sometimes you'd get a "treat" (inspirations or temporary powers) other times you'd get a "trick" Loads of monsters coming out of the door which you had to defeat. They put in 6 halloween badges to earn.

All in all again, awesome game. The developers regularly release free content in about 3 month increments. Try Sony Online Entertainment and see if they do that for you.

I highly recommend this game.

Fun for everyone...

This is a surprising addictive game that accomodates players of all different styles if you are interested in the world of superheroes.

You begin by defining your character. One main component defines your origin (e.g. do you have your powers because of a mutation, or do you wield magic?), but that doesn't really affect the game. The 2nd main component is your archetype. There are 5 archetypes which defines the general attributes of your powers. A blaster does lots of damage, but can't take much. A scrapper does a lot of damage (and can take a decent amount of damage), but is limited to hand-to-hand combat (mostly). A tanker does moderate damage, but takes enormous damage. A defender helps others in combat (fight better or protect). A controller both controls the enemies as well as helps others in combat.

Once you have your archetype, you pick from a good selection of powersets (from martial arts to swords to ice or fire and a whole lot of others). Then you pick which particular powers of those powersets your character will use. Then you get to actually design your character from a massive array of design options to individualize your character. Having played for over 6 months now, I can report that I have never really seen 2 characters that look the same that wasn't done on purpose.

Now the good part. The game has done a great job at allowing you to do missions as part of a group or do solo work (although some characters may not be able to do solo work very well). They have kept the enemies restricted to zones, so when you start out, you can explore and perform many missions in that zone...and they are interesting missions right from the beginning. You'll encounter street gangs, automated robots (clockwork), nazi-like groups, evil magicians, and undead...and this is just to start with. As you progress, you'll encounter more variations and new groups.

Also, as you progress, you'll gain additional powers and be able to access additional powersets. I've created over a dozen characters to try out the different archetypes and powers, and I've had fun with all of them.

You don't have to be playing constantly (i.e. sacrifice your life) to keep your character moving up. And the vast majority of people I've encountered have been very well behaved and very helpful. Although I haven't had a great deal of luck getting support to respond the way I would like, they do a good job keeping updates moving through the system (trick-or-treating was a blast...knock on doors and get a treat (inspiration that helps you fight) or a trick (enemy pops out of the door - something ghoulish)).

Unless you are a die-hard RPG player, I would strongly recommend City of Heroes. You won't regret it.

Unbelievable Design & Innovation!

I've played them all: EQ2, WOW, AC2, SWG, FFXI, etc.
City of Heroes is the best MMO I've ever played and one of my top 5 games of all time. Why? Because of the attention to detail and the game's design. The interface for the game is amazing and should be studied by future MMOs for many years to come. Jumping into the game is easy for the most casual gamer. The game is fun right away. Finding or joining a group is remarkably easy. The customization of the overlay windows is astounding. The programmers put as much thought into how to play the game as they did into the game itself. And, they are constantly innovating. The first and second patches to the game were huge improvements on an already wonderful game. With this MMO, you get what you pay for in monthly fees. I know I will be playing this game for years. Trust me. Give it a chance!

Fun is the name of the game

I have played online games before and games that involve a character you create that you grow and evolve.. but for the most part, they were stuck in a format that has been done before, and was too limiting. (how many DnD games can they make... and I am sick of the dungeons and the hobbits and the space creatures and the BIG SHIPS ... tired old stuff)

This game is a radicle departure from all of that. You still create a character but the similarities stop there... you can pick different things as you go up in levels but you also get to modify and redo them... like at lvl 24 you go on a respec mission, and once you finish it (and you will have to team up to do it) you can redo what you have done up to that point.. if you didn't like something you can delete it and choose something else.... so you are not locked into something.

Teamwork is of the essence. Lots of the times in other role playing games I felt like I really didn't need a team of people, or I felt too imprisoned in the way the game wanted me to team up or the way the game locked me into something once I teamed up... this game you can team up just to roam the streets to beat bad guys up... or you can team up and accept a mission to beat bad guys up -and when you accept a mission and complete it, you get far more xp points than just beating up bad guys on the street.....

the types of teams.. I play a lvl 25 tanker, and there are four or five OFF THE BAT types that I play with to make my tanker better.. I like to find a defender, a blaster... all these different types of team members do vastly different things in the group... some heal, and some fight... some can mind control enemies.... so, if you spend time finding different people to play with, and refining your skills as a player and logistics of battle, you can make some very good teams.

The game allows you to keep a list of friends... so when you sign off, you can see when your friend comes on line as well. So, you can team up again.

the game is very open ended.. has stores where you can get enhancements to your skills.. you have to buy things, and you get 'money' or influence by getting xp doing missions or etc... or you can go on ebay and buy the influence and have it traded to you. (the trade option is very nice... anything you own -not skills- you can trade.. which is where ebay enters in).

Good fun, been playing for three months and love to play with my friends.

This game is rated PG. Nothing I wouldn't mind my teen son or daughter playing. Lets face, they would be fighting crime...

Have fun.

Graphical MUD

What I LOVE about this game:
-I was addicted to MUDding in college, and this is the next generation, graphical instead of textual. Teaming up to advance in levels while being social at the same time. It's amazing.
-Character uniqueness. You really can stand out as your own individual both in name, type, look, and power set.
-City of Villains expansion coming out soon to allow you to be the bad guy. Enemy AI has gotten good the last few years, but you still can't beat playing against real people.

What I don't like about the game:
-The monthly $12-15 subscription fee. If you play a lot, it's probably worth it. If you're strapped for time and only fit in a few hours a week tops, then maybe it's not the most cost-effective fun you could have.
-They're building it as they go. The basic system is well thought out and very nicely designed. However, they are constantly tweaking aspects of the game either to make certain aspects more easy/hard, or to fix bugs. You log on one day and expectations you had about the game's behavior are shattered. They recently dropped a "version 2" release that's really upset many players.
-Most of the time you have to group with others. There really aren't good opportunities to play alone (and advance) if you don't feel like being in a group one night. You have to be able to quickly figure out which other players are morons too, because if you get in an ineffective group, you've just wasted an hour of playing.
-I lose network connection a lot, which is dangerous in the middle of a fight. This is even when there's low load on a server. It's been suggested it's due to my graphics card driver, but I don't buy it. Usually I can get logged back in in under a minute.

Warning from a longtime player!

There are some things you should know about me before reading this so you know where I come from. I'm both a video game enthusiast and a super hero buff. I've played this game from July of 2004 to October of 2005, and I have even been beta testing its sister game, City of Villains, over the past two weeks. I've led several other people to play this game based on my early experiences with it, and yes, I loved it early on.

First, the good stuff. City of heroes is an enormous and detailed game which blends many of the finer points of super heroics and video games. Players can personalize their heroes through choosing various power combinations, origins, and can customize their costumes to look like almost anything they want. Graphics and sound effects are dead on. There are hundreds of missions, hundreds of diverse enemies, and you can even form super teams and battle everything from street thugs to giant robots to vicious archvillains.

Now, the bad part...the part that turned me against the game. The developers are constantly changing their minds about which direction they want to take the game, and fundamental game mechanics are consistantly being modified to go along with their ever-changing "Vision" (as they call it). Every few months, the game undergoes free massive updates called "Issues." While these updates add a lot of content to the game (especially the earliest ones), they have increasingly undercut player abilities and have now begun to dictate how players can build their characters. So while the game may seem fun when you start it (especially if you don't know what it was like before), be warned that it will become consistantly worse. You will be forced to completely redesign your character every few months, relearn how to play him or her, and any complaints you have will fall on deaf ears. Despite the overwhelming outcry from longtime players such as myself (and truly a majority of players), the game is consistantly modified for the worse, and players feel less "super" every time. Many players like myself have held on through the changes, hoping we had ridden out the worst and things would get better, while others, like my friends, have had enough and jumped ship. With the latest change (cutting back the ability to customize powers), I've finally had enough.

City of Heroes is an excellent example of a fantastic game squandered by poor planning and an uncaring and egotistical development team. I give it 5 stars for everything it once was, but take three away for what it has become and what it will eventually be.

The new hottness

I just bought this game on 2 Apr 04 and this is the best MMO that I've played. I don't play MMOs all of the time and I haven't played all of them but this one is definately worth your money. This game is very user friendly. Unlike FFXI or Everquest, this game tells you where to go and shows you how to get there. There are very unique costumes and a huge selection of items to choose from. You can create your own supergroup and select unique powers to make your superhero stand out. Bottom line if you wanna get into a MMO this is a great start.

Amazing combat, little depth.

First off, I would like to say that I love superheroes. Ever since I was a kid I loved them, and the prospect of this character creation system was just an amazing chance at being a character that I cherished. I bought this game BECAUSE of the character creation system, and it did not let down. I have been playing for 2 and a half months and only now has the novelty worn off.

This game, simply put, is a combat game that just happens to feature multiplayer. It really isn't a role-playing game. You don't manage stats, there is no inventory, and your appearance only changes if you pay for it, and it has no effect on your skills. This, of course, is why the game shines. Most people don't want to devote hours and hours and hours trying to make their elf level up, and they surely don't want to be stuck fighting rats and snakes, and the occasional crocodile (that's right, I was a troll in EQ :D). This game is quick paced, addictive, and overall fun. That is until the killing gets old. It's basically either kill badguys on the streets, or go through a total of 5 types of mission maps, over and over again. I swear, it's fun for a long time, but it gets old. And with no PvP for such a long time, I don't really care anymore. I just want a more detailed game. I, myself, am switching over to Galaxies, but I do recommend this game, if only for the 30 day trial.

Technically nice and somewhat fun

First, I should begin by conceding that this is my first MMORPG though I have done the online battles (Half-Life, Unreal, etc). Despite some really great technical details, I was unfortunately a little disappointed overall with the game.

The Good
- Great Graphics.
- Character creation (as everyone who has tried it attests) is simply the best out there. It is a lot of fun to try different combinations to create a unique persona.
- Communication between characters, teams, and friends was pretty easy and did not require a MIT computer science degree. Teaming was very easy.
- Fun to try to build up powers in different combinations.

The Bad
- Missions were pretty much the same. Many buildings and areas were exactly the same as others. Eventually, the repetition made the experience a little boring and ruins the suspension of disbelief.
- Battle was similar no matter where you went. If you are a brawler, you get in the middle of the group of thugs, and push 1/2/1/2 as fast as it will let you; if you are a commander you stand back and push 1/2/1/2 as fast as it will let you; if you are a healer, you stand back and.... The team strategy made it a little more fun, but it too was largely pretty repetitive.
- Enemies were pretty similar. Once you pass a certain point, all enemies are divided into color-codes. Most go down in one hit, but give you little experience; others kill you pretty much automatically. So you have to go search out the ones in your band of skill. I couldn't find any unique qualities about bad guys that would make me want to try one strategy over another. As mentioned about, it was pretty much 1/2/1/2 no matter who you fight.
- No real story arcs, even in the continuous stories (which they called arcs). Nothing like a real RPG (a la Final Fantasy or Balder's Gate). I understand the MMORPG need to have a slightly different paradigm, but they really could have worked harder to come up with a compelling reason for playing beyond (i) kill 10 of these guys, (ii) now kill 10 of these guys, (iii) now go recover the non-descript loot, etc. The identity-less contacts didn't help all that much.
- No competition with others (though I hear it is coming in CoV).

Here is my rundown:

Graphics: 9/10
The graphics are solid and I run into little slowdown when I jacked it up to the highest resolution (Pentium 4 2.5G/ GForce 4). I won't say much here, because you can check out the screenshots for yourself.

Sound: 4/10
Not horrible, but nothing to write home about. I just finished Chronicles of Riddick where you could hear the muffled tortured screams of cell mates and unique voice acting for each character, so I have to admit the twing sound when you activate telekinesis seems a little weak.

Fun: 7/10
Starts out a lot of fun, but after playing 10 hours or so, everything just seems about the same. The mission are not really all that different and I could not find a compelling reason to keep coming on.

Overall: 7/10
I hate to be harsh on games, but overall I would probably not buy this one again. My advice to someone considering buying CoH is to wait to see how things improve once City of Villains comes out. Supposedly, most of the things that I found annoying are being fixed in the expansion. If you are a hard core MMORPGer, there is a lot here that is worth the time. But if you are a casual gamer (such as myself), I would say you can probably skip this one without losing too much sleep.

I really love this game!

City of Heroes is an Online game where you create your own superhero. You compeletley customize your costume, from tights to colors. It's amazing. I usally get into a game for 2 weeks and such, then get bored of it. With CoH, I've been playing for at least 8 months. It's very simple to pick up the controls and the way things work, especially if you take the in-game tutorial (which is optional, but it's pretty much a free level). This game is very, very addicting.

There is one problem though. You may find yourself making and deleting characters quite often.
First reason: It's so much fun to make costumes and names and background stories for your heroes.
Second reason (and why I did): It's kind of hard to find a hero that suits you. There are so many differnt powers to choose from, you may spend months finding the right character.
But! It is fun to make characters, so it's not so bad.
Because of that second reason, I have a lvl 22 hero and a lvl 19 hero.
There is no PvP (Player vs. Player), but it will be added with the new expansion pack, City of Villains (where you can make your own villain! Fun!). I can't wait for City of Villains, and I highly recomend City of Heroes.
