Yes, it's worth it

The main gripes from other reviewers are: (1) they don't like the monthly service fee and (2) They keep getting kicked from the mapserver.

I too experienced very common mapserver disconnection problems. However that was during the first week after the game had shipped, and now the mapserver reliability has improved dramatically. From my experience, it is no longer an issue.

If you think the game will be boring, because the first few levels of advancement seem like mindless, repetitive missions against simple-minded rooms full of 3-4 thugs, then try to find a mentor.

A mentor is a much higher level player who temporarily invites you to team up. While mentored, your exiting powers are increased to the mentor's level so you can get a glimpse of much higher level combat and hopefully team play (experience gained is scaled down proportionately to your true level).

I haven't played much, but through mentoring, I have already seen that the evolution of the combat dynamics is truly amazing. During the first 7 levels, all you see are players using the same sets of one or two early "powers". But when you see the full glory of a team of diverse heroes with their full power complements matched against powerful badguys, each with their own special strengths and weaknesses, there's no doubt that you will realize the game really has legs, and it's not likely that you will want to let your subscription expire before you can really play at that level.

Disco Inferno anyone?

Rating this game is somewhat difficult. It's divided for me in two areas; Character Creation & Game play.

Rating this game on Character Creation is impossible! There are limitless possibilities and you're free to let the creative juices flow. 10 stars out of 5! In the 6 months of playing this game, I rarely saw anyone that looked similar and usually those were always trying to recreate comic book heroes from Marvel or DC.

Game play is where this game gets tricky for me. Initially, it is very easy to get in an play and obtaining level 12 is fairly straight forward however this is where the game changes into 'crawl' mode. It takes hours and hours of doing missions that are really not that different, in hopes of achieving another level. By the time I achieved 35, this game had really wore thin on me. I honestly think it is a telling story when I was able to obtain level 55 in World of Warcraft after 3 months of play and it took a friend over a year to get that in City of Heroes.

I realize that I wouldn't consider myself a power gamer anymore but as a casual gamer, World of Warcraft offers up a feature that lets you keep pace easier with your companions.

City of Heroes outside of the enormous time it takes to level is a really solid game and I would highly recommend it if your interested in he Genre. In the day and age where PC games have lost most of the creativity in favor of the 'sure thing' City of Heroes is a refreshing new genre with the absolute best character creation in MMORPGS. Even Wow suffers from having repetitive looking characters!

If your a superhero fanatic, go nuts! This game is for you.

I am new to Massive Multiplayer Online Role Playing Game (MMORPG) but I can say that this game doesn't disappoint. I have been playing for little over 2 years now and my wife is an even bigger fan of the game.

The game allows you to create heroes (or villians with the added upgrade) that are personlaized to your likings. There is a wide range of powers to choose from. Make your hero male or femal, short or tall, and customize your costume to your liking. Combinations are endless.

*Run through the game with your hero beating on the criminal computer characters (NPCs) or fight in player versus player (PVP)areas and take on other heroes and villians toe to toe.

*Get involved with the many story archs available in the game.

*Join Super Groups (like SG-AEGIS) and become a memeber of a community of players that share similar interests in the game.

*This game has violence in it but it is not gore. Not recommended for children under 12.

Let your creativity flow with this game. Get away from the standard canned hero types and do something new by creating your very own by customizing your hero and giving them a back story of their origin.

Have fun!

OK for now.

I played Ultima Online for 4 years, DAOC for 6 months, and this game for about a month now. As far as stability this game is quite good, interface is easy, combat is good.

You can fight in the streets for experience in various towns. You can fight in indoor missions given to you by contacts. You can fight in task force missions which take about 4-6 hours to complete.

Roleplaying is sort of limited, storyline is defined by the game rather than the players, there is no PVP, there is no property, and it IS a level grind.

But that being said it's fun for now. I don't play as often as i did in UO, i tend to login, play for an hour or so, then logout.

If the game doent get more content i will likely jump ship when the next game comes and perhaps check back for city of villains-- the evil expansion where you play villains.

Very Satisfied Customer

Let me begin by saying, this is my first real stab at the MMORPG, so I really can't judge this against the likes of DAoC, Everquest, Etc...

I will just give you my "Newb" Opinion (Note, I am only 7th level so I am obviously not very deep into the game)

Likes:
------
Character Creation is awesome, and almost unlimited in choices.
Missions are fun and add variety or atleast a reason for all the monster defeating.
City is huge in three dimension, not only can you run for 10min across the city but you can climb (and fly) up to the rooftops.
User base seems to be pretty helpful and friendly.

Dislikes:
---------
Controls are a bit odd but, you can remap most everything to your liking.

Basically I am really satisfied with the game. I look forward to getting to play it in my free time.

Well worth the money

This is one of the best games I have played in a long time, a long time. You get to play over the internet with thousands of other people and join different teams, start a Supergroup, level up, and much more. Well worth the $50. I suggest getting the game card too while your at it, it allows you to play the game for free for 2 months, and when you first get the game, your first month of play is free. Appropriate for all ages, hours of enjoyment, a must buy.

This IS a Good Game

For those who are still undecided on whether to play, try to get the free Demo from October's PC Gamer. You get to play free for 21 days. If you're like me, you'll be tempted to buy the full version.

To reiterate what many have said, this has the BEST Character Creation system ever in a computer game period. I've spent hours making different characters just to see what they look like.

The Sidekick idea works, I grouped with a higher level party than myself last night and was able to go up a level easily (I'm level 9 right now).

The animations are fun, and the powers are great (can't wait until I get FLY at level 20).

As with most MMORPGS, the most fun in these games are meeting people and playing with them. For the most part, the people I've found online are fun and helpful.

As for the Monthly Fees, yes, most MMORPGS require monthly fees, but it's important to note that Guild Wars does not (see my other review).

All in all, this a fine game that fits a niche market in the Superhero genre. Even if I don't decide to buy it, I'll be hard pressed not to get City of Villians when it comes out, with promise of more features that many of the other reveiwers have complained are lacking in City of Heroes (custom bases, PvP, etc.)

Whether it's worth $15 a month to play? Well, I spend over that renting DVDs, and I spend more time playing CoH than watching TV, so, yeah, $15 a month isn't outrageous. How much do you spend on Cable?

CITY OF HEROES ROCKS

WARNING: THIS GAME IS VERY ADDICTIVE. WHEN YOU ARE LEVFEL 6 YOU CAN GET A POOL POWER, THEN WHEN YOU ARE LEVEL 14 YOU CAN GET THE SECOND POOL POWER. YOU CAN CREATE UP TO 150 HEROES. YOU MUST LOOK AROUND FOR DIFFERENT BADGES.IF YOU TRAIN HARD,DO SOMETHING SPECIAL, OR SAVE SOMEONE SPECIAL SO YOU CAN GET A BADGE. YOU CAN CHAT WITH OTHER PLAYERS AROUND THE GLOBE AND CREATE TEAMS OR FRIENDS LISTS. THERE ARE MANY DIFFERENT ORIGINS TO CHOOSE FROM. I PLAY IT EVERY DAY AFTER SCHOOL INSTEAD OF DOING HOMEWORK AND I ALSO NOW IGNORE ALL MY FRIENDS WHO DONT PLAY C.O.H.! WELL, I WARNED YOU THAT IT WAS ADDICTING.

I currently play Final Fantasy XI online which, at later stages of the game (levels 60+) just gets too tedious, and too tiring. COH is a completely different MMO in that it's fun right from the get-go, and it stays fun even past the later levels. Why? It's simple: because the game concentrates on combat and it does it exceedingly well. While other games have crafting, selling, housing, etc... COH has awesome combat. Its so good that you'll forget you're playing an MMO at times - it has combat that is on-par or even better than most single-player games out today. Plus, you can join your friends and make a kick-butt supergroup - weeding out the crime that infests the city. What's more the graphics are great, and yet hold up well at 30fps+ on my old GeForce 3Ti. COH proves that you dont need crafting which is totally boring in most MMO's anyways. -I mean what would you rather do? - Spend 2 hours sitting in town making crap for money, or going out and kicking some bad-guy butt? I choose the latter any day! Anyways, check it out. The reviews are all positive for a reason. It's fun fun fun!

One of the Best MMRPG on the Market at the moment

4 Rating: 4, Useful: 5 / 11

As a veteran of a number of MMRPGs (including Everquest, Dark Ages of Camelot, Star Wars Galaxies, PLanetside)I have mostly good things to say about City of Heroes. I'm a little shocked by some of the 1 star ratings on here and I am wondering exactly what some of those folks expected. For those of you who don't know, City of Heroes is a Massively Multiplayer Roleplaying Game- its a pay to play subscription based service which puts you into the shows of a superhero in a world full of other players who are also playing superheroes. Basically, you create a hero based on origin and archtetype (a fancy word for "class") in a very similar vein to many other MMRPG. Since others have gone over what the game is, I'll give you a lists of good/bad.

The Good

Incredibly deep character creation system
No Loot (and no fighting over loot)
Great looking powers
Option to create up to 8 heroes on each server
No PVP
Very well done cityscapes with plenty of stuff to jump on/off of

Generally friendly playerbase
Mission based system provides relief from "camp X spawn" games
Practically bug free release
Almost no lag. The game is actually playable on dialup.
Excellent developer interaction and feedback (ie game gets fixed quick)
Option for solo play (depends on your archtetype)

The Bad

Leveling curve gets much steeper past lvl 15. To reach lvl 40 (maxing out your levels), you'll need 8.5 million exp. pts
Some problems with disconnects
No capes
No option for PVP
Questionable high end game (once you're done with leveling, whats left).

I played CoH for about a month and half in beta and steadily since release. Its a game where you can log on and do a mission in an hour or spend an afternoon playing with a group of heroes. When it comes right down to it, its still a MMRPG with superhero trappings but playing COH is probably the most fun I've had doing an MMRPG since the early days of EQ.
