I'm Addicted

I was so mad at my husband for playing this game until 5 am in the morning. I was wondering what all the excitement was about. So, I checked it out. Creating the character was so much fun and certainly no one will have the same! The game itself was really exciting and fun. It is great to meet other heros to go out and fight the "baddies". You can play on your own or with a team -- or even just help other heros on the way to your mission. To my astonishment, I also was up very late (don't tell the hubbie) playing the game. I'm addicted! I love it.

A MMOG that isn't a part-time job

Most MMOGs are a little boring to start out with. Brand-new characters don't have the power or the equipment to take on anything more interesting than a rat or a snake. Quests are frequently too difficult at this stage--hope you like hitting giant bees!

Not so in City of Heroes. Your new hero arrives in Paragon City fully equipped to take on the bad guys in the tutorial level. You even get your choice of a cool costume without having to spend any game currency. When you're done with the tutorial, head to Atlas Park or Galaxy City to meet your first "contact" and start doing missions for experience and "influence" (the game currency). You don't have to worry about equipment, because there isn't any (other than "enhancement" disks that boost powers you already possess).

Without equipment to worry about, there's no rush to level your character. You can level fast if you feel like it, but many players are content to enjoy the journey. If your friends are above or below you in level, don't worry--you can "sidekick" the lower ones to within one level of yourself, or "exemplar" down to a lower hero's level.

These features make the game perfect for someone who has a job and a life, someone who wants to log on and play for a while because it's fun. And it IS fun. Combat animations are realistic and physically plausible. Effects are logical AND cool-looking. And you'll never have to commit to a seven-hour "raid" stretch in your computer chair. Even at higher levels, most tasks can be accomplished within an hour, maybe two at the outside.

The instanced missions appear just for you and your team: there's none of the "camping" that exists in other MMOGs. It's really great to have somewhere to go and not worry that some more powerful players will barge ahead of you and wreck your fun.

Customer support from NCSoft is the best I've ever seen--in any kind of organization! GMs are online, and when you petition, they answer in minutes. What's more, they actually help you. The development team is frank and open about their plans for the game. They listen to the player base, and when they make a mistake, they admit it in public, unlike other games where they'll tell you it's "working as intended" until the whole thing blows up in their faces.

There is a monthly fee to keep playing, but I've found that the $15 or so is completely offset by the lack of money I'm spending on other games. Not to mention, the monthly fee is all you have to pay--City of Heroes won't charge you extra for expanded content or "premium" servers.

At this point in the evolution of the game, there isn't a lot to do besides combat. The combat is really fun, but sometimes you just want to do something else. The dev team, however, has stated their plans for alternate systems of character advancement in future expansions.

Still: great graphics, exciting combat, interesting story arcs, a dev team with ears, no worrying about your virtual possessions, no camping, and you can log on for even a little while and still have fun? I don't know why every other game in the universe doesn't follow the CoH model. Big, big thumbs up.

I received this game as a birthday gift and can not stop playing. It's extremely well done. For those complaining of repetition, get over it! It's a video game for heaven's sake. You want real repetition, play "Pong". For those saying the patches take days to download, get a new computer or a faster internet connection. While I will admit that the initial patches are tedious and you may need to stop and reboot, it took only a matter of hours. Set up the download before you leave for work and it's done when you get home. For those complaining that they no longer have "god-like powers", give me a break. Superheroes were never meant to be gods. Even Superman has his weaknesses. What's the fun of playing a character when you know that you will always win? As for replay value, this game has plenty. When you reach level 50, you unlock other character types you can play. If you get bored with your character, create a new one with different powers and abilities. Varying his origin will generate different contacts and different missions. If you love comics and superheroes, you will love this game!

City of Heroes is a Must Have Game

Although I can not say that I have played a lot of multiplayer games, I can say that out of the 3-4 (so-far) games I have played this is the best of them all. It keeps your attention, and it's ever changing. When I was in search of a new multiplayer game, I called around and asked what was the most popular at that time... they all said "City of Heroes". By looking at the cover of the box, and reading the back of the box, I was not impressed. I thought it seemed too childish (I am 32 years old). But what the heck? It was a father's day gift. I am so glad I purchased it. Now me and my whole family gather around the PC and take turns playing. You start off by picking a costume, there are literally hundred of costumes that you can customize... no two costumes are ever the same on COH (city of heroes). Then, you get to pick what type of hero you would be if you could be a hero. Do you prefer human, mutant, science, technology, etc? Then you pick two power sets of the powers that suite your you and your character. After you go through the whole hero set-up, you go through a quick training sessions where they teach you how to use the controls and your powers. Then, you are off to save Paragon City from evil villains either on your own, or with a group of other on-line heroes... zapping enemies on the streets, or doing one of the many missions... and if your good enough, you can create or join a Task Force that can last up to 3 or more hours of non-stop game-play for experience points to increase your levels and gain new powers. The main focal point is the other on-line heroes. This game is a great way to meet new friends... the game as all about team work. You may start off by yourself, but eventually you HAVE to group together with other heroes. The game forces you to be a team player, or a team leader. I felt a little weird at first and a little shy, but they make it so easy to search for other teams, you just click the button "Seek Team". The game is always changing too... The makers of the game are able to add new sections to cities, add new features, new villains, and more at any time. Also, the Game Masters are watching! I once had a problem getting into a mission because the mission door was a wall... before I knew it a character showed up and fixed the problem right in front of my eyes. This is a great game if you have ever wanted to be a super hero, meet new friends, and be totally entertained. And there next project is "City of Villians" (COV), which will connect both COH and COV together to fight hand to hand with your friends. The one bad side of this game is the price, $15.00 a month is a little high, but its the going rate for online games. Hope this helped you.

I simply don't play a lot of online games. I have tried many and they all fall short of fun. None have captivated me the way CoH has. I am not a kid anymore and dont spend ungodly amounts of time playing games. I have work and children at home, but I love this game and play it every chance I get. I have played other games online like Diablo and EQ, they don't hold a candle to City of Heroes!

A fresh Relief to Online gaming

City of Heroes is a fresh relief to the world of online gaming. While the game does not offer as much depth as some of its competitors in the online game market, it does offer fun.

COH is fairly easy to play and within a few minutes of hero creation you can jump into the tutuorial which offers a few basics of the game. The character creation offers a good range of choices for you new super hero.

There is plenty to do with contacts offering you quests that are geared to your level. Most questss can be finished quickly and with the mapping system you can find your way around easily and quickly. With a push of a location your compass will guide you to Places and People. So no getting lost in huge zones playing find the next person.

People are friendly and you won't have to spend hours looking for a group or even a super group to join. COH, puts Fun first and that is what a game should be FUN.

So much fun you start feeling like a hero in everyday life!!

Alright...I have always been a HUGE HUGE HUGE fan of warcraft, UT, BF1942, and Wolfenstein. However, this game beats all.

The best thing about it is it has more than one element of fun. You can chat with people and dance, go hardcore and spend a day on a few Task forces, go on single missions, or simply go fight villains at random. It's almost like a "choose your own ending" sorta game. It never gets old, each level comes with a new ability or slots to enhance the ones you have. There can be a lot of strategy involved, every team has it's stronger heroes which, in the end, determines the style of fighting...which is never the same.

I could write a novel about this game, but I am sure I wont be given enough room. Let's just say I am finding a new apartment with three of my friends so we can all play in one room at one time. :)

Fun for part time players, but still needs improvement.

Keep in mind that this game is still in its infancy. EQ, UO, and many others have had years to put out expansions and such. Even so, there are certain aspects of the game that are worlds beyond other MMORPGS out there. Here's some detail, coming from a MMORPG newbie:

The Bad:
- As many have said, no capes! Bah!
- Repetition: I'm at level 7, and I'm beginning to see this repetition. There needs to be a much more diverse group of enemies. I'd also like to see more instances of "bosses" and such earlier in the game. At this point, you don't see much of the backstory behind the crime organizations.
- * Lack of "Community": Permanent areas to gather and create community are sorely lacking. Don't expect any "taverns" a la D&D here. There needs to be locations where the superheroes can go to "unwind" together and role play. Teams provide PvE community, but they are fluid, and don't last as a team. Just when you've got a great team together, you, or others on the team have to head out. Breaks up the rhythm.
- Lack of lairs/hideouts: Every superhero needs a hideout! Where would Batman be without the cave? Superman without the Fortress of Solitude? I assume this will come soon, but it's needed now. Lairs allow people to create their permanent location within the game.
- Too focused on leveling: I'd love to see more role playing, but everything is geared towards leveling and fighting. There's SO much more opportunity to RP with superheroes than you see in the game.
- Mostly young crowd: Although I have no facts on who's what age, most of the people seem younger based on their behavior and communication. I suppose the genre caters to that, though.

The Good Stuff:
- AMAZING character creation: This is usually so lacking in other MMORPGS, but you have almost endless options here. I rarely see two similar chars. You can have 8 characters per shard!
- Fun abilities: Flying, energy blasts, etc. Good stuff.
- Graphics are worlds beyond many other games. EQ doesn't even compare.
- Movement is dynamic: Jumping, flying, etc.
- Very little lag: Perhaps a function of it being a new game, but I rarely encounter any.
- Functional and modern controls: Very easy to figure out what everything does on your screen. Very clean and modern.
- Good teaming: Create "amateur" teams, join Superhero Teams, or buddy with a mentor once you've reached L10.

All in all, the setup is enjoyable for new people breaking into the MMORPG world. I'd like to see NCSoft do some expansions (free?!) fairly quickly, though. While City of Villains looks great, I'm not going to get caught up in it: that's almost 9+ months away (2005 release). They need to work on some upgrades which will make things more enjoyable for everyone ASAP.

My wife and I play this together and we have an absolute blast!

The game runs flawlessly for both of us.. I would expect that it would run fine on my machine (2.4Ghz./512MB/GeForce128) but it even runs well on her machine (800Mhz/256MB/GeForce64).. although it is not as pretty and maps take a little longer to load, it still runs fine. She is, however, now bucking for a system upgrade ;) Granted both of these run GeForce cards (I've heard/read the stories about problems with ATI cards), but those that tell you that you need a high end system to run it obviously have something else wrong with their systems!

Mission layouts can be a little repetitive but they get better as you increase in levels (those of you that are sub-20.. it gets better... believe me).

I've read a couple of reviews that state that leveling is too long... uh... I personally think that it is too fast! You can get to level 10 in an evening if you so desired!

Character creation has seemingly limitless possibilities.. yes there are no capes, but Cryptic's excuse for not having them just yet is a valid one! Nothing like telling your users that the reason there isn't capes is because they want to make sure they do them right!

Archetypes, Power sets, Origins... it's all here for you comic book fans (of which I am one)!

I was completely against a game that made you pay for play after you purchased the game.. but from one day of free beta playing, I knew I was going to have to purchase the retail version. I was hooked! Those that complained about paying to play after they bought it!?!? Give me a break.. take some remedial reading courses.. looks like you need them!

Not perfect, but a lot of fun

Having participated in the beta, I can safely say that this game, to date, has been quite a bit of fun.

Unlike EQ, you can often pick up some missions and do part of them, then come back and do the rest even days later. And, there are some that you need to complete in a certain amount of time.

The grouping dynamics are pretty good, though it will take more, non-beta grouping for me to know for sure.

The graphics are excellent, with the only lag I suffered (with a P4 1.8GHz, 1GB RAM, and GeForce 3 64MB card) was in large group situations when I was in the heart of it all (playing a scrapper type.)

You can play alone quite a bit, or play with others, and still have quite a bit of fun.

No PvP (thankfully), but they may introduce it in an expansion.

I will certainly be playing from the get-go, and it makes a nice alternative to EQ when I am burnt out on camping mobs.
