Good for Awhile

City of Heroes made for an enjoyable summer of 2004 for me. By the Fall of 2004, though, it was too much to stomach. Before I address the bad, I will evaluate the good. There are two huge plusses that CoH has:

1) An incredible variety of costume creation possibilities. Multitudes of colors, design schemes for different body areas such as shoulders, boots, hands, pants, chest, emblems, and helmets. The downside is that not all designs are available until later levels. When capes were introduced, the game designers utilized the reason that capes were a "prestige" item. I am sorry, but Robin the Boy Wonder (Batman's sidekick) in his little yellow cape is hardly prestigious. To deny capes and other costume designs at character creation phase is simply a thinly-veiled marketing tool to keep players as subscribers for longer periods of time. Nothing prestigious about that.

2) A huge positive for City of Heroes is the innovation to allow players of greatly varying power levels to "adventure" together is "sidekicking". As long as your sidekick remains within a reasonable range, his/her power levels are raised dramatically to be just a bit lower than your own. This permits a new player whose friends have already been playing the game for a considerable amount to time, to jump right in and be a part of the team.

The downside to City of Heroes, and it is considerable enough to warrant only 3 stars in the rating, is the requirement to of searching for a team at around midlevel. This is a trap many massively multiplayer online games fall into. No longer can a player solo and hope to have any success at all. The missions a hero receives as simply too difficult as the criminals advance in their own powers and technological gadgets. When on a limited playing schedule as nearly all working family adults and studious teens should be, the endless wait to enjoy the product already purchased and continuously subscribed to each month makes the game experience be almost criminal.

Don't Buy.

When released, this game was a breath of fresh air - it was fast-paced, it was fluid, it had little down-time, it was very easy to solo with, and it was balanced in such a way that it really did create the feel of being a super-hero - you could take on very large groups of villains with success.

None of these things are true anymore. Once barely visible, the XP grind is now atrocious and inescapable. The difficulty level has been ratched up to an obscene degree, and I honestly can't think of another game that seemingly takes such perverse delight in making low-level characters run a gauntlet of superior numbers and levels to reach mission areas. Any time a power proves popular, it is 'balanced' to uselessness. The developers ignore the fanbase entirely except when the fans are flattering them - feedback of a negative or constructive sort is ignored /entirely/. Unless you are lucky or obsessive with numbers and builds, there is very little of this game past the 10th level that can be soloed without many, many tries.

There is absolutely no reason to recommend this game, or its companion City of Villains. There are far, far, far better things to spend your money on.

The Service is the worst in the history of MMORPG

The Gm's treated me with more disrespect then ever... The gameplay was slow and missions were boring and repetitive.. After the way i was treated in this game i never want to play another game from this company again...
There is never anything new going on and the servers are mostly laggy and slow... If your bugged your screwed because GM's will take a good 3 hours to get a hold of you...After that if they see any problems with your account theyll freeze you and make sure you cant move... Even if your in the middle of a timed mission...Service terrible if i could give this game negative stars i would...

Save yourself the frustration...

I started playing CoH in October of 2004. It was easily the most addicting gaming experience I'd ever had. I bought it on a Friday evening and played it so much that I didn't actually sleep until Sunday night (true story). Due to developer-induced changes, the experience is nothing close to what it once was...

Had the game never been altered since then, I'd recommend it with a 5 star rating without thinking twice. Now I advise you to spend your money elsewhere!

I won't bother trying to explain all the ins and outs of what the gameplay once was and compare it to what you'll get now, but what I will tell you is this:

If you buy this game, prepare for frustration. The developers have consistently and effectively weakened players' abilities with each update to the game (every couple of months). Due to the changes implemented by the developers over the course of about 11 months, my character transitioned from having god-like abilities to the point where I could barely take on 3 enemies my own level.

Furthermore, NCSoft and Cryptic Studios DO NOT LISTEN to their clientelle's suggestions for creating a better gaming experience. Your input will be thoroughly ignored.

It was after discovering that fact that I cancelled my membership. A company that disrespects my opinion doesn't deserve my money.

Spend yours elsewhere.

Yes, this is quite a good game...but, there are some things that contributed to me quiting. One: Every once in a while there are some rubbing banding issues that occur on certain servers. This may be client related, but who knows. Two: Up untill this first update, there is no way to change what your hero looks like...at all. Three: Despite this game being fun, there really isn't much else to do except talk to other people, and level grind.Four: Since there is no "phat loot" you may want to consider another game. Five: Also, this game is having some balancing issues, because people on the offical boards are complaning about how this type is usless in groups, and this class is pointless peroid etc. etc; but that really is not a big problem. All in all this is a fun game, with great story lines...Yes, I said a story line in an MMORPG. Costumer service is great, and the community itself is one of the best I have ever been involved with. If you are into comic books, and super powers give this one a try, and or you are looking for a fresh new kind of MMORPG give this game a try.

By the way, whoever said this game was cheaper than Final Fantasy XI (great game) is lying. CoH = $15 a month, FFXI = $13 (rounded up) a month..

A great game

A much needed change from traditional medieval MMORPG's. No loot to squabble over, no camping and for the most part the subscriber base is 'mature' or at least acts so.

The game is your rudimentary, kill / level / skillup but there is a LOT of room for improvement.

Nonetheless a great game and a nice waypoint for those wanting to dtich the monotony of Everquest while waiting for WoW

AWESOME!

I have been playing COH for a year. This game is so much fun. Lots of fast action missions and hunting without all the debth required... in some games. I wanted a game filled with fast action without all the hassle of making armour and weapons. This game is well thought out... and support totally rocks. COH is always improving their game and adding new features which makes it continually interesting and fun. There are tons of ways to make your character look. Lots of options to create a total separate identity. Have fun!

I think I know this Game

Where to begin? I have played this game for about a year now and let me tell you it is like no other game I have ever played.
Coming from someone who has 3 characters at the top level (50) there is alway something new to "catch" your eye. My wife, who has never played this type of game, is addicted like no other. She also has 4 level 50's.
Yes the recent "nerfs" of hero's wasn't good. But for those who never played before you will never realize what you missed.
The "grind" to 50 is done so many differant ways it is never the same path unless you choose to do it the same.
Task Forces are a long series of missions that level you very quick. The character creation is so unique no 2 characters in the game are the same. The Super Groups (guilds for the WoW and Eq people) are a social group that hunts and mishes together. Every Super Group I belong to helps new people any way we can. You now have Super group bases, the down fall is that you need to have CoV in order to access the base. The new pvp zones are fun. The pvp zones are 2 fold. 1. you can fight villians, 2. you can fight other heros in the arena's. The computer controlled villians are widespread. Like I said I have 3 50's and still haven't fought all of the villians and I still have some areas I haven't been to yet. Take from me the game rules and the entertainment factor is what you put into it. Happy Gaming.

The Developers continually make your characters obsolete.

I bought this game over a year ago and had a blast for the first six months spending hundreds of hours playing. Then, the developers decided to 'improve' the game by making my two main characters virtually useless. Despite repeated complaints from a large portion of the subscribers, the Developers refused to remedy the situation or even provide alternatives. This is not the only instance of this happening either. Each new 'edition' of the game makes some poor player's character obsolete. In frustration a large number of CoH players have inactivated their accounts. I expect the same will continue with CoV and other games developed by this company. They turned what could have been a fabulous MMORF into a frustrating experience.

dont buy this game

ive played this game since beta in 2004. at its release the game was great but as of the last 3 updates they have nerfed the game worse then any other ive ever played its a totally different game and forget being super hero, at best your a moderate hero. i cancelled my account and sold it on e-bay.

the devs have over 6000 post all condeming there latest changes and they dont seem to catch on that they've ruined the game.
